Yeah I assumed a loss too, but wanted legitimate progression and despite the score, I think I got it here. My team as a whole hasn't quite reached that next level that Pitt is at, though I think we can get there by next year possibly. The change of game from NCAA 07 and NCAA 08 might have made this rivalry easier for me too in the future, because Pitt made a BCS bowl in the first season and this and followed it up with a good recruiting class, whereas they haven't had the same success since moving to 08.

I think this is a good sign that as long as you keep the football in your hands in conference play, I think you should have a solid season this year finally.
Haha it's starting to become somewhat of a real rivalry, but I still need a few more pieces before I can claim my first win in this. The turnovers were killer, and really only one of the pick sixes was on my own stick skills - the last one, which came out of frustration. I'll have two of my toughest conference games over the next three, but you're right if I can keep the ball, then I should be able to put together a solid bowl-eligible season.

Thanks for the comments, as always! I'll post the Tartan Tidbits here in a bit, then I'll won't be back on here until Thursday - looking forward to catching up on everyone's reports when I'm back!

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Keyes keying on Cousins, Manning in passing game
Despite a 2:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, junior quarterback Justin Keyes (119.2 QB rtg., 51-82, 597 yards, 2 TD, 5 INT) has made big strides in his third year as starting quarterback. In addition to the new offense implemented by offensive coordinator Jules Nottingham, Keyes’ positive strides have been partially because of a focus on getting the ball to redshirt senior wide receiver Kevin Cousins and junior runningback Jim Manning.

Cousins, a transfer from Penn State, struggled through an injury-riddled debut with Carnegie Mellon in 2008, as he only accumulated 301 yards and a touchdown on 25 catches. However in three contests this season, he has eclipsed his touchdown number and nearly topped the other two, compiling 18 receptions for 253 yards and two scores.

Manning will own numerous school rushing records provided he stay healthy, but he has also added a new element to the Tartans’ passing game in 2009. After tallying just 15 catches for 122 yards as a sophomore, the Reisterstown, Md. product has 11 receptions for 113 yards through three games.

Jones lists Tartans in top five
Three-star tight end David Jones (Louisville, Miss.) has kept Carnegie Mellon in consideration for his services, as he trimmed his list from eight schools to five over the weekend.

Jones, a six-foot-four, 252-pound product of Louisville High School, has the Tartans as co-favorites with Texas A&M, with Miami (Fla.), Florida State, and Georgia trailing. Despite the shift in offensive philosophy, the tight end position is a necessity for the program and currently lacks depth, as sophomore David Young is the only one with a catch so far this season.

Blanco, Harris remove CMU from consideration
The Tartans were left out of the top five lists of a pair of three-star prospects, wide receiver Clay Blanco (Holbrook, Ariz.) and halfback Kaleb Harris (Cheviot, Ohio).

Blanco, a six-foot-four, 190-pound wide receiver from Holbrook High School, is going forward with USC as his favorite, followed by Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas A&M. CMU is looking to add to its receiving corps with the graduation of Kevin Cousins after the season, and Blanco was one of three wide receivers the coaching staff targeted during the in-season period.

Harris, a five-foot-eleven, 200-pound speed back from Colerain High School, has Michigan has a big favorite for his services, with Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Bowling Green also making the cut. The Tartans liked Harris as someone who could compete for the starting job following Jim Manning’s graduation, with sophomore Nate Satele the only other competition at the moment.

Carnegie Mellon Tartans (1-2, 0-0 MAC) at Ball State Cardinals (2-1, 0-0 MAC)
        Saturday, September 26, 2009 | 12:30 PM (ET)
Muncie, Ind. – Scheumann Stadium | No television

Team Overview (C+ overall, B- offense, C defense)
The reigning MAC champions and this year’s preseason favorite, Ball State is off to a great start in 2009 with a 2-1 record. The Cardinals nearly upset #22 Florida in the opener, leading late in the second quarter, 17-14, before the Gators rattled off 17 unanswered points to win. BSU then came back from a 17-14 deficit with a 21-0 fourth quarter to knock off Navy, and blew out Penn on the road, 52-7, thanks to a 39-0 start.

Senior quarterback Nate Davis (135.5 QB rtg., 52-88, 588 yards, 6 TD, 1 INT) is in his third year starting and will likely hear his name announced in the upcoming NFL Draft. He has thrown for 20 or more touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, finishing the 2008 campaign with 2,448 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions on 200-of-343 passing. Redshirt senior tailback Corey McGee (59 carries, 343 yards, 6 TD; 4 catches, 65 yards, 1 TD) has been a force in his first year as a starter, whereas All-MAC Second Team selection Dante Love (3 catches, 9 yards) has struggled after compiling 46 catches, 704 yards, and nine touchdowns in 2008. Davis has a young offensive line to protect them, with the bookend tackles being redshirt freshman Alvin Williams and four-star true freshman Xavier Willis.

Defensively, the Cardinals return two All-MAC First Team picks in redshirt junior cornerback Brandon Carnegie (7 tackles, 1 INT) and senior strong safety Alex Knipp (6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF). The defensive line will miss a couple of key pieces in redshirt senior Brandon Crawford (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF) to injury and third-year sophomore Jason Jankowski (no stats) to suspension. The linebacker corps in BSU’s 3-4 defense is solid with sophomore Brad Haumiller (13 tackles, 1 sack), senior Spain Cosby (17 tackles, 1 INT, 2 FF, 1 FR), and redshirt senior Kenny Meeks (12 tackles). The secondary features the aforementioned Carnegie, who had 40 tackles and five interceptions last season, and Knipp, who finished with 25 tackles, 4 interceptions, and a fumble recovery in 2008. A true freshman, Troy Jackson (7 tackles), starts opposite of Knipp at free safety.

Two-time All-MAC selection and 2008 First Team pick Ian McGarvey (2-3 FG, 13-13 XP) finished his redshirt sophomore season last year with a perfect 55-of-55 mark on extra points and 18-of-26 effort on field goals. True freshman Mike Gibbs is the team’s new punter, having 12 boots for 491 yards and a net average of 34.3 so far. Love (3 kick returns, 67 yards; 5 punt returns, 112 yards, 1 TD) is a dangerous returner for the Cardinals, already scoring once on a punt return.

I think this game against Ball State will be a good measuring stick to how far along the program is. Hopefully the Tartans can get the W and contend for the MAC Championship this season!

Freaking Nate Davis...what a blast from the past! Good luck against Ball State. Tartans could really use a win in their quest for a bowl game!

That's what I'm thinking as well! Ball State was pretty dominant last season and looks on pace to defend its MAC title this year, so being able to compete with them - especially on the road - will show where CMU is at as a program here in Year 4. The MAC East is pretty down compared to the West too, so getting a win here would be massive.

Just another throwback name that I forgot about before starting my report! Definitely could use a win here to help make a bowl game, but it would also show how much progress the team has made since the beginning of the season. I think we're miles ahead where we were at this point last year, despite the record being 1-3.

Appreciate the comments as always, I'll have the game up at some point tomorrow!

Season 4, Game 4: Carnegie Mellon at Ball State

Two Steps Back: Ball State Backup Torches Tartans
Carnegie Mellon gave up four touchdown passes to Ball State backup Tanner Justice in a 42-14 defeat

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

MUNCIE, Ind. -- When Ball State quarterback Nate Davis departed in the first quarter with back spasms, it was easy to think that Carnegie Mellon could score an upset win in its Mid-American Conference (MAC) opener.

Instead, Davis’ understudy Tanner Justice put forth the best performance of his collegiate career, torching the Tartans for 229 passing yards and four touchdowns as the MAC favorite Cardinals picked up a 42-14 victory over CMU this afternoon.

“I think our level of play dropped when (Tanner) Justice came in,” said fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “We got complacent and thought that the effort and energy levels didn’t have to remain the same with their backup in, when (Ball State) still had the same skill position guys around him on offense. I’m disappointed that was the case, because even though I felt Ball State was one of the league’s best entering the season, the way we’ve played to start I felt we could have competed for a win in this one.”

Davis managed to give Ball State (3-1, 1-0 MAC) an early 7-0 lead before leaving, connecting with Dante Love for a 25-yard touchdown. Carnegie Mellon (1-3, 0-1 MAC) answered at the end of the first quarter courtesy of a Jim Manning three-yard dive, then took a 14-7 advantage with 9:53 remaining the half after Justin Keyes found Stephen Carter for a 23-yard touchdown. Behind Justice, however, the Cardinals bounced back to tie the game before the break, as Corey McGee scored on a nine-yard sweep with 2:30 on the clock.

Justice’s takeover in the second half coincided with major offensive struggles for the Tartans, as Keyes completed just one pass over the final 30 minutes and Manning managed just 21 yards on the ground. The BSU backup gave the hosts the lead for good on its opening drive with a 32-yard pass to Love, then found the redshirt senior – who entered the afternoon with just three catches for nine yards on the season – two other times to open up a 35-14 gap. He added his fourth touchdown pass with 4:05 to go, finding Eric Bradford from 11 yards out to set the final score.

Manning’s streak of 100-yard performances ended at two games, as he only compiled 65 ticks on 18 carries. Keyes finished with 57 yards passing, a touchdown, and an interception on 5-of-17 passing.

Justice entered the day with three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his career. Love was the beneficiary of Justice’s career performance, finishing with eight catches for 128 yards and four touchdowns. McGee also excelled on the ground, tallying 168 yards and a score on 23 carries.

Carnegie Mellon will look to rebound next weekend at home when it hosts Bowling Green.

Tough game, especially getting torched by the backup but it just shows there is more work to be done to get the program to where it wants to be.

Cut out the newspaper articles about this game and use it as motivation for the rest of this year and beyond.

Hoping you take the frustration out on Bowling Green at home next game!

Ouch - pretty disappointing result for the Tartans, especially with Davis out. The good news is that Ball State is the MAC favorite, so there should be more winnable games on the back half of the schedule.

Yikes, that looked like the CMU offense of old. Never good seeing Keyes back in double digit passing yardage aha. Just a rough day all around, but I think it was just an outlier performance and things will perk back up next week.

Their backup is rated in the 70s, so I kind of assumed that I had it in the bag once I knocked out Davis - big mistake. Love torched my corners and McGee broke probably 15 or so tackles, and their defensive line kept timing my snaps perfectly. Once I went a couple of scores down, I started getting desperate and tried to string some big plays together rather than playing my game, and I never could get back into it. Definitely will use this one as motivation for the rest of the season.

Yeah, I keep telling myself that Ball State is really talented and should beat me regardless if their backup QB is in, but I can't help but be disappointed with how we responded after knocking out Davis. Thankfully that's probably my toughest conference game of the season, so there's plenty of time to rebound and make a run at a bowl.

Their defensive line ate my offensive line up for lunch, and then I tried to do too much with the sticks and it ended in short drives. I don't think that's how the rest of the season will end up, especially considering Ball State is likely the best team in the MAC that I'll face. But it's still frustrating because of how I was playing leading into the game, and I hope it's just an outlier especially with some winnable games coming up.

Yikes. Really rough to get torched by the backup, and the offense went missing. Ah well, on to the next one.
