      Reserve linebacker suspended two games
Redshirt freshman walk-on linebacker Luke Harvey has been suspended two games for a violation of team rules, beginning this Saturday against Bowling Green.

Harvey, who hasn’t accumulated a stat this season, will also miss the game at Toledo and will return Oct. 17 at Western Michigan.

Mikulec, McMillan keep Tartans in running
A pair of three-star prospects have kept Carnegie Mellon in their respective top fives, as the Tartans made the cut with offensive tackle Jim Mikulec (Plum, Pa.) and wide receiver Jake McMillan (Seven Oaks, S.C.).

Mikulec, a six-foot-two, 290-pound WPIAL product from Plum High School, has CMU has co-favorites with Michigan, followed by Alabama, Western Michigan, and Dartmouth in that order. The Mustangs left tackle would immediately slot in as the backup tackle at both sides, while likely sliding into a starting spot following the graduation of Jason Baker and/or Anthony Tremblay.

McMillan, a six-foot-two, 195-pound playmaker from Irmo High School, lists Georgia as a heavy favorite, followed by Miami (Fla.), CMU, UAB, and Ole Miss. With wide receiver being a big recruiting focus for the Tartans coaching staff, McMillan would play immediately as a freshman and likely start with current sophomore Stephen Carter and freshman Eddie Williams, who is being redshirted this season.

Johnson leaves CMU out of top five
While Carnegie Mellon made the top five of one offensive tackle prospect, it lost another over the weekend as three-star Orlando Johnson (Landen, Ohio) removed the Tartans from consideration.

Johnson, a six-foot-two, 273-pound offensive tackle from Landen High School, is moving forward as Iowa and Wisconsin as co-leaders, followed by Nevada, Arizona, and Baylor. CMU reportedly liked Mikulec moreso than Buckeye State product, and his decision was made shortly after the announcement of Mikulec’s top five.

Bowling Green Falcons (1-3, 0-0 MAC) Carnegie Mellon Tartans (1-3, 0-1 MAC)
        Saturday, October 3, 2009 | 12:30 PM (ET)
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Gesling Stadium | No television

Team Overview (C overall, C offense, C defense)
After opening up the season with three consecutive losses, Bowling Green easily dispatched of FCS team Northeastern this past weekend, winning by an eye-popping 69-3 score. The Falcons led at halftime, 10-7, against #25 Virginia Tech before ultimately losing, 35-18, and were up 37-28 in the fourth quarter against Memphis before giving up two touchdowns to lose.

Senior quarterback Tyler Sheehan (173.5 QB rtg., 61-97, 877 yards, 12 TD, 3 INT) is in his first year as the starter and is coming off a MAC Offensive Player of the Week performance thanks to six touchdown passes against Northeastern. He has a talented receiving corps to throw to in redshirt senior Freddie Barnes (27 catches, 412 yards, 8 TD), who had 10 receiving touchdowns in each of the past two seasons, redshirt junior Jermiah Kelley (19 catches, 279 yards, 2 TD), redshirt senior Zach Charles (12 catches, 175 yards, 2 TD), and four-star true freshman Andre Debose (11 catches, 108 yards, 1 TD). BGSU’s offensive line consists of two freshman starters in center Maurice White – who replaces the injured Shane Steffy – and redshirt right tackle Justin McPhearson, but the unit’s youth hasn't diminished the running game with third-year sophomore Curtis Van Demark (40 carries, 262 yards, 1 TD) getting the majority of the carries.

The defense returns All-MAC First Team selection Michael Ream (21 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF), who plugs up the middle as a redshirt senior defensive tackle. Classmate Vincent Corner (10 tackles) was a Preseason All-MAC pick at free safety, and senior cornerback Jahmal Brown (15 tackles, 2 FF) is also a returning starter. Two freshmen hold starting spots in the linebacker unit in Marshall Ham (20 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) and redshirt Jay Smith (11 tackle, 1 FF, 3 FR) on the outside, with senior defensive captain Brandon Jackson (29 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 FR) manning the middle. Redshirt senior defensive end Garth Hartung (14 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF) is one of the conference’s most talented pass rushers.

True freshman Fred Mathis (5-5 FG, 16-16 XP) will kick and punt for the Falcons this week, as junior college transfer Blake Benjamin (18 punts, 803 yards, 37.6 net avg.) is serving a three-game suspension. Barnes (14 kick returns, 301 yards; 10 punt returns, 112 yards) is the team’s top returner, with Kelley (7 kick returns, 140 yards) assisting on that front.

Glad to see you seem to be hanging around a bit longer on recruiting boards for most of your targets this season than in year's past; hopefully that's a sign for a quality class coming in. Gotta make sure to get the ball out of Keyes hands quickly against that BGSU pass rush, looks like a couple of quality edge guys to go up against.

I agree that it's promising I'm staying on more top-five lists this time around, but I wish I could move into the top slot for these guys. Hopefully if I can string together a couple of victories to help CMU move up on these lists, so I can feel more confident in getting some commitments before the end of the year!

As for Bowling Green, the pass rush was definitely a worry heading into the game. We'll see what happened here in a minute!

Season 4, Game 5: Bowling Green at Carnegie Mellon

Tartans Rebound, Pick Up Wild Win Over Bowling Green
Carnegie Mellon forced six turnovers, offsetting three of its own, to grab a 45-31 triumph in MAC play

by Jayson Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon jumped out to a 21-0 lead this afternoon and never relinquished it, ultimately coming away with a 45-31 triumph from Gesling Stadium to check off its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) victory of the season.

Carnegie Mellon (2-3, 1-1 MAC) picked off five passes defensively and ran one back for a game-shifting touchdown, and compiled 270 yards and four touchdowns rushing on 49 carries – good enough for 5.5 yards a pop. Bowling Green (1-4, 0-1 MAC) was able to cut a 21-0 deficit into 28-24, but then allowed the Tartans to score 17 unanswered in the second half and only added a garbage-time touchdown with their backups to set the final score.

“We challenged the guys in practice this week and they responded well,” said fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “I was incredibly disappointed with the performance against Ball State last week and thought our effort levels were down. We kept pushing all week at practice that we needed a quick start and really had to set the tone of the game early, and a 21-0 lead is definitely the way to do that. Of course, it could have easily been 14-7 and probably would have been in previous seasons, but our guys are experienced enough now to know when to dig in.”

Aided by a roughing the passer penalty on a third down misfire, CMU finished off its opening drive with a 15-yard scamper from Jim Manning to make it 7-0. The Falcons managed to get to midfield on their second possession before Jon Crowell intercepted a Tyler Sheehan effort, and the Tartans took advantage as Keyes found Manning on the option for a 16-yard score. Momentum was all in the hosts’ favor as Todd Andriano forced a fumble on BGSU’s next offensive play and it was recovered by Crowell, but CMU saw an extended drive falter with a lost fumble.

The visitors climbed back with a fourth-and-one conversion and reached the Tartans’ seven-yard line, and it seemed like they had a touchdown after Sheehan found Freddie Barnes in the back of the end zone. Replay showed however that Barnes didn’t quite drag his toe before falling out-of-bounds, and on the next play Sheehan missed his favorite receiver and instead hit the forearm of Calvin Burton. Burton adjusted himself and hauled in the deflection, then ran untouched for 93 yards for his fourth career pick six.

The mistakes kept coming for BGSU as Barnes ran back the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, only for it to be brought back because of a holding call. The visitors finally scored with 5:21 to go in the half with a Curtis Van Demark 15-yard rush, but the Tartans responded with a Kevin Cousins 17-yard jet sweep and 19-yard catch, and used a Nate Satele 11-yard option run to regain the 21-point advantage. It seemed like a blowout was on the horizon, but Sheehan found Jermiah Kelley on a 54-yard deep post to make it 28-14, then after the defense forced a Keyes interception, Zach Charles scored on a 38-yard catch to make it a one-score game at halftime.

The gap was trimmed to four following the Falcons’ opening second-half drive, as Fred Mathis booted it through the uprights from 44 yards away. Crowell then fumbled the ensuing kickoff back to the visitors, only for BGSU to return the favor in the red zone. After a CMU punt, Hayden Temple brought back the ball with an interception, and the hosts rattled off an 11-play drive that ended in a Keyes three-yard scramble to make it 35-24.

Andriano brought down interception number four after Sheehan overthrew Kelley on the next drive, and the Tartans took advantage with a five-yard connection from Keyes to Stephen Carter. A fifth interception followed on fourth-and-inches trying to keep the game alive, and Jon Foster put the contest away with a 24-yard field goal.

Manning bounced back after a poor performance last Saturday, tallying 157 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Keyes also was efficient, compiling 190 yards of offense (120 pass, 70 rush) and two touchdowns (1 pass, 1 rush) on 12-of-20 passing.

Carnegie Mellon is back on the road next Saturday night when it travels to undefeated Toledo.

Huge win! Offense managed the game and got the yardage they needed to, and seems like defense was opportunistic and made a few big stops, none bigger than Big Play Burton. Must be nice to finally get some breaks going your way for once, the kickoff being called back had to be a gigantic swing in momentum for you as well.

Nice win! Big defensive performance forcing turnovers, and offense and special teams performed as well. Pick 6 from Burton was a huge momentum shifter.

Not a great game for Keyes but when the Defense plays like that and Manning gets his #100+ you don't have to throw to much..

Thanks! Definitely thought this was a winnable game going in, and it was a pretty comfortable one - outside of that run they had at the end of the first half. We'll take it, for sure!

Big Play Burton, I love it! Absolutely felt good to get some breaks, seems like I've been on the wrong end of them throughout this report. The holding call on the kickoff was huge, because that touchdown seemed like the game-shifting play that completely deflated my team - especially with the momentum meter in this game. I'd like to limit the fumbles - Carter and Satele have been really poor in that regard this year - but I can't complain about a two-score win!

Burton has been immense over his career. He hasn't been the lockdown #1 corner I'd love to have, but he's really good at jumping routes and then finding another gear once he picks off a pass. The defense in general was pretty solid, though I'd like to get some more pass rush and turn pressure into sacks.

Keyes wasn't great throwing the ball, but he was able to move the chains on the ground and with Manning running for 5.5 a pop, we didn't need a huge game from him. I do think he's been a lot better throwing the ball in comparison to his first two seasons, but it's still not quite where I'd want it to be. Even with the new spread offense, the gameplan is to lean on Manning and the running game and make some plays defensively, and we definitely did that against Bowling Green!

Thanks for the comments, guys! Gonna drop the weekly news posts here and then a preview of next week's tilt early tomorrow morning.

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

                              Bracey keeps Tartans alive
Three-star cornerback Richard Bracey (North Madison, Ohio) has kept Carnegie Mellon in the hunt for his services, as he trimmed his list from eight to five schools over the weekend.

Bracey, a five-foot-eleven, 175-pound defensive back from Madison High School, lists Michigan as the favorite, with Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Tartans in a tie for second, and Missouri solidly in fifth. Cornerback is one of CMU’s stronger positions with current juniors Calvin Burton and Hayden Temple entrenched as starters, with sophomore Erik Sellers and redshirt freshman Jon Crowell appearing in nickel and dime packages, and Bracey would compete for immediate playing time.

Williams drops CMU from top five
Three-star guard Hunter Williams (Cumberland, Md.) will not be considering Carnegie Mellon as his college destination as the Tartans were left out of his top five.

Williams, a six-foot-two, 286-pound lineman from Fort Hill High School, has Wake Forest as his favorite, with Toledo, Akron, Yale, and Ohio trailing. CMU would like to build up its offensive line depth, and Williams would have given the program a potential starter in his sophomore season once current juniors Eric Fraser and Matt Fitch graduate.

Will be interesting to see if Texas can keep winning with Colt down for the next 3 weeks, especially against Oklahoma.

Looks like Dez Bryant is good no matter what school he is playing for as well,.

Good luck with Toledo they have played solid so far, 63 points against Delaware. Hope your defense is ready.
