Season 4, Game 7: Carnegie Mellon at Western Michigan

CMU Overcomes Slow Start, Wrecks WMU in 43-14 Blitz

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Despite a slow start, Carnegie Mellon blitzed Western Michigan for 36 points over the second and third quarters, leading to a comfortable 43-14 victory this evening in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.

Carnegie Mellon (3-4, 2-2 MAC) rattled off 43 unanswered points in all following an early Western Michigan (0-7, 0-4 MAC) score 1:50 into the game, and allowed just 181 total yards defensively thanks in part to eight sacks and two interceptions.

“Incredible defensive performance tonight,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “We knew we could take advantage of where they were weaker up front, and by hitting their quarterback early and often, we were able to rattle him and never let them get into a rhythm. I would have liked to see our offense get off to a better start, but once the ball was rolling there, it was hard for Western Michigan to stop.”

A penalty on the opening kickoff gave the hosts great field position, leading to a Brandon West four-yard score less than two minutes in. The Tartans responded early in the second frame on the back of their runningback Jim Manning, who found paydirt three times in the red zone to put the visitors ahead 22-7.

The passing game then did the damage in the second half, as an ultra-efficient Justin Keyes found David Young for a 35-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter, and then connected with Kevin Cousins on a 16-yard score near the end of the frame. A Nate Satele 27-yard dash in the opening stages of the fourth quarter completed the 43-point burst, with West providing a garbage-time tally to set the final score at 43-14.

Offensively, Manning ran for 117 yards on 20 carries and the aforementioned three touchdowns. Satele added 59 yards on 10 totes, while Keyes provided 66 yards on 10 scampers. The junior quarterback went 11-of-13 for 113 yards throwing the ball, and Cousins led all receivers with seven catches for 68 yards.

Mark Toth tallied two of the Tartans’ eight sacks defensively, adding one of two interceptions off the Broncos’ Caleb Clark. Matt Burnsides, Calvin Burton, Aaron Crosby, Chris Hill, Zac Hood, and Bobby Magnum all brought Clark down behind the line, while Matt Johnson secured an interception in the third quarter.

Carnegie Mellon will enjoy a week off before returning to the field when it hosts Eastern Michigan on Halloween.

Huge win, glad to see you not mess around and really stepped on their throats in this one. Funny how Manning dominated the second quarter, while Keyes was the guy in the third. Huge spread in those two quarters. Not the most exciting statline for Keyes, but talk about managing the game very well. For the way your team is built, I feel like that was about the most perfect offensive output style that you could ask for.

Yessir! Nice to have a comfortable, uneventful win once in a while. Defense was superb and really held it down while I grew into the game offensively. Figured I could go blitz heavy with how poor their offense was, and sure enough it paid off very well.

Absolutely! Our schedule sets up really nicely to make a run here, so I have to take advantage. WMU was definitely our easiest game of the conference slate, but looking ahead there's no other team on our schedule that we're not an overwhelming underdog against.

Felt really good to have a blowout go in my favor for once! Manning really took off after a slow first quarter and after he got his, I wanted to get Keyes more involved in the passing game and he delivered. That kind of balance is exactly what I want, though I could ask for more passing yards from Keyes if I'm being picky. Zero turnovers is great too, especially coming off a seven-turnover day!

Keyes might not have had huge passing #'s but I still fill that was his best game of his career. Congrats on the "W" now it's time to put together a little winning streak...

Definitely one of his better ones, for sure! He was efficient throwing and carried the ball well on the option, and didn't have to do too much. Helps that we played a dreadful opponent, but I hope that that's the way he can play the remainder of the season.

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Starting right tackle to miss two games
Sophomore offensive tackle Jason Baker will miss Carnegie Mellon’s games against Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio) after suffering a bruised shoulder in the Tartans’ 43-14 win at Western Michigan this past Saturday.

Baker has been a nailed-on starter since arriving in Pittsburgh from Regina, Saskatchewan. Junior offensive tackle Phil Patrick will start in his place on the right.

Shaw, Jones to make official visits on Halloween
Carnegie Mellon will have two of its in-season recruiting targets on campus for official visits on Oct. 31 against Eastern Michigan as Chris Shaw (Celina, Ohio) and David Jones (Louisville, Miss.) are set to visit.

Shaw, a six-foot-five, 316-pound defensive tackle from Celina High School, has Iowa as his favorite, followed by the Tartans and Wisconsin. He could start right away alongside current freshman Matt Burnsides, and projects to be a very strong force in the middle.

Jones, a six-foot-four, 252-pound tight end from Louisville High School, lists CMU as his favorite, followed by Texas A&M and Florida State. He would likely begin as the second tight end for the Tartans behind current sophomore David Young, and projects to be more of a blocker than a threat in the passing game.

                      Stanley removes CMU from consideration
Carnegie Mellon fell out of the running for three-star offensive tackle Kevin Stanley (Washington, D.C.), who removed the Tartans from consideration over the weekend.

Stanley, a six-foot-two, 290-pound offensive tackle from St. John’s High School, is moving forward with Connecticut and Ohio as the favorites, followed by Kentucky, Harvard, and Dartmouth. By leaving CMU out of his top five, that locks the program into seven remaining in-season targets to focus on for the remainder of the season.

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Brewer suspended for remainder of season
Sophomore fullback Brandon Brewer has been suspended for the remainder of the season due to an academic violation, Carnegie Mellon announced this week.

Brandon gained the starting fullback job in the offseason after walking onto the team as a freshman, though with the change of offensive philosophy, the fullback isn’t quite as featured. He has accumulated four carries for 11 yards rushing and one catch for two yards receiving this season.

Redshirt junior Korey Harper (4 carries, 18 yards) will return to the primary role at fullback he held the previous two seasons.

Ellis leaves Tartans off top three
Three-star defensive end Steven Ellis (Shelby, Ohio) has trimmed his list from five schools to three, and Carnegie Mellon was left out.

Ellis, a six-foot-six, 225-pound defensive end from Shelby High School, is moving forward with Michigan, Notre Dame, and Iowa as his finalists. He would have been in contention to start at CMU as a freshman, with it being a toss-up between him and current freshman Zac Hood.

Team Overview (C overall, C offense, C defense)
Eastern Michigan enters this matchup with a 2-5 overall record and 1-2 mark in the MAC, as it won the conference opener against Kent State (31-28) before dropping consecutive games to Northern Illinois (16-31) and Miami (Ohio) (24-34). The Eagles nearly had a historic upset in Week 2 at Michigan State, as they were tied 28-28 entering the fourth quarter before the Spartans held on for a 38-28 win.

Redshirt senior scrambler Tyler Jones (102.2 QB rtg., 60-124, 693 yards, 5 TD, 4 INT; 25 carries, 82 yards, 1 TD) will miss six more weeks after suffering broken ribs at Virginia, leaving the offense to classmate Andy Schmitt (123.2 QB rtg., 63-108, 804 yards, 5 TD, 7 INT), who is a bit more balanced. EMU’s top offensive player is redshirt junior runningback Antwine Perez (84 carries, 530 yards, 6 TD; 12 catches, 180 yards, 1 TD), who is in his first season eligible since transferring in from Maryland. Redshirt senior Jacory Stone (41 catches, 419 yards, 3 TD) was the Eagles’ best receiver last season with 75 catches, 881 yards, and six touchdowns, and sophomore Russ Monroe (31 catches, 296 yards, 1 TD) has taken a step forward after seeing little playing time as a freshman. Fifth-year tight end John Bonner (25 catches, 280 yards, 2 TD) was an All-MAC First Team selection last year after compiling 47 catches, 448 yards, and seven scores.

The defense is very young with seven projected starters being either freshmen or sophomores. The veterans are senior defensive tackle Stephen Johnson (12 tackles, 1 FF), fifth-year cornerbacks Chris Everson (26 tackles, 1 sack, 3 INT, 1 FF) and Lorenzo Seaberry (14 tackles), and redshirt senior free safety Chris May (26 tackles, 1 INT). Among the youth ranks, the most talented players might be freshman defensive end Sam Miller (20 tackles, 1 sack) and first-year undersized (5’11”, 199 lbs.) middle linebacker Hassan Gold (36 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 TD). With the injuries to Brandon Downs and Andre’ Hatchett at outside linebacker, sophomores Brett Irby (23 tackles) and Nate Hendrix (22 tackles) will get the start.

Fifth-year kicker Zach Johnson (5-10 FG, 18-19 XP) is in his third season as the starter and hasn’t been consistency, jumping from 47 percent (9-19) on field goals in 2007, to 64 percent (11-17) in 2008, to this year’s 50 percent rate. Redshirt junior Patrick Treppa (32 punts, 1,586 yards, 49.6 avg., 13 inside 20) is also in his third season as the primary punter. Perez (23 kick returns, 520 yards; 10 punt returns, 82 yards) is the Eagles’ top returning threat.
