Season 4, Game 8: Eastern Michigan at Carnegie Mellon
Tartans Spook Eagles on Halloween, 51-31, to Move to .500

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon’s first three seasons of Division I competition have provided more tricks than treats, but 2009 has seemingly satisfied the Tartans’ sweet tooth thus far. That proved to be the case again in a Halloween matchup against Eastern Michigan this afternoon, as CMU moved to the .500 mark with a 51-31 triumph over the Eagles in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.
Today’s tilt features a bevy of big plays, with five touchdowns between the two sides eclipsing 50 yards or longer. Carnegie Mellon (4-4, 3-2 MAC) tallied three of those scores – starting with an 80-yard hookup from Justin Keyes to Kevin Cousins – while accumulating over 300 yards on the ground between its junior duo of Jim Manning and Keyes.
“Feels really good to string a couple of wins together and get back to .500,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “We knew that the schedule presented some opportunities for us in the back half, and we’ve taken advantage these last two games. Jules (Nottingham) has done a terrific job with our offense and made it more explosive, and while our defense gave up too many yards today for my liking, they also made a lot of big plays to keep the game at a comfortable margin. We need to harness this momentum and continue working towards our goals.”
Despite the 51-point outburst, the Tartans’ start was anything but smooth as a long opening drive ended in a Nate Satele fumble. Luckily for the hosts, Eastern Michigan (2-6, 1-3 MAC) quarterback Andy Schmitt answered Satele’s mishap with an interception, connecting with Jon Crowell to end a promising drive. CMU took advantage right away, as Keyes hit Cousins on a slant route and the redshirt senior transfer from Penn State rumbled 80 yards for a touchdown.
The Eagles answered with a long strike of their own with Schmitt finding Russ Monroe for a 66-yard score, then took the lead early in the second quarter with another touchdown pass – this one of two yards to Jacory Stone. Manning made his initial mark on the game with a 64-yard scamper to tie it at 14-14, and after another Satele fumble – one that would get him benched for the remainder of the day – Schmitt let loose a misguided pass across the field into the waiting arms of Calvin Burton, who ran it back for a 77-yard pick six.
After a Jon Foster field goal set the halftime tally at 24-14, the hosts finished off their opening drive of the second half with a Manning five-yard plunge to make it a 17-point game. The deficit quickly went back to 10 with another long Schmitt touchdown toss, this one of 54 yards to Michael Graham, but the Tartans answered three minutes later as Keyes found Manning on a screen pass that resulted in a 34-yard score.
That would be as close as EMU would get, as the hosts added 10 more points to end the third quarter and an additional field goal with two minutes to play to set the final.
Manning finished with 271 yards (227 rushing, 44 receiving) of offense and three touchdowns (2 rush, 1 rec). Keyes compiled 247 yards (161 passing, 81 rushing) and three scores (2 pass, 1 rush) to go along with two interceptions.
CMU’s defense forced five interceptions from Schmitt, with two coming from Burton. Crowell, Matt Johnson, and Hayden Temple also snagged an errant pass from the Eagles signal-caller, while David Brown, Matt Burnsides, Erik Sellers, and Mark Toth all recorded sacks.

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com
Burton named MAC Defensive Player of the WeekJunior cornerback Calvin Burton was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after tallying seven tackles, two interceptions, and a touchdown in the Tartans’ 51-31 win over Eastern Michigan this past Saturday.
‘Big Play’ Burton, as he has been dubbed by his teammates, has had a terrific junior campaign (28 tackles, 1 sack, 5 INT, 1 FR, 2 TD) and is gaining some NFL Draft buzz should he decide to leave early. The junior has 16 career interceptions and four touchdowns, with two coming in his freshman season in 2007.
Crowell to miss remainder of regular seasonCarnegie Mellon suffered a blow to its defense and special teams units as redshirt freshman Jon Crowell suffered a torn shoulder muscle in the Tartans’ win over Eastern Michigan this past Saturday and will miss the remainder of the regular season.
Crowell has excelled in his role as the slot corner (21 tackles, 3 INT, 1 FR) and primary kick returner (26 kick returns, 575 yards; 12 punt returns, 143 yards, 1 TD), but his season is likely over unless CMU plays in a bowl game. Sophomore Erik Sellers (16 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FR) and second-year freshman Bobby Mangum (26 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FR) move up to the third and fourth respective spots in the cornerback pecking order, while it is unknown who will assume returning duties in Crowell’s absence.
Starting strong safety back from injurySophomore strong safety Elvis Washington (3 tackles, 1 INT) is healthy and will return to the starting lineup this Saturday at Miami (Ohio).
Washington, who posted 33 tackles and two interceptions as a freshman, missed the last six games with a dislocated elbow suffered in Week 2 against Yale. Redshirt freshman Bobby Magnum started in his place, and will return to his role as backup strong safety as well as see the field in dime packages as the fourth cornerback.
Walk-on linebacker suspended two gamesRedshirt junior linebacker Bryan Seward has been suspended for two games after a violation of team rules.
Seward, a walk-on who joined the program in 2008 after playing two seasons at NCAA Division III Wabash College, has not recorded a stat this season.
Shaw, Jones give soft commits after official visitsCarnegie Mellon couldn’t quite seal the deal with either of its official visits this past Saturday, but it did receive soft commitments from three-star defensive tackle Chris Shaw (Celina, Ohio) and tight end David Jones (Louisville, Miss.).
Shaw, a six-foot-five, 316-pound lineman from Celina High School, enjoyed his visit to Pittsburgh but will take his other visits. He is set to visit Wisconsin this weekend and then Iowa after.
Jones, a six-foot-four, 252-pound tight end from Louisville High School, also loved his time at CMU but not quite enough to fully pledge to the program. Texas A&M and Florida State trail the Tartans in his recruitment, and he will visit Tallahassee this weekend.
London to make official visit on Nov. 14Three-star free safety Jabari London (South Laurel, Md.) will make his official visit to Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 14 when it hosts Maryland.
London, a six-foot, 191-pound defensive back from Laurel High School, has Vanderbilt as his favorite, with the Tartans and Bowling Green trailing. CMU gets the first official visit out of his top three, and will look to secure a solid verbal commitment before he has a chance to visit the other two finalists.

The Manning train is rolling at full steam now! Huge game for Big Jim, and also nice to see Cousins put up a big yardage game on the stat sheet; hopefully he's finally starting to feel better about his decision to transfer in way back when. Carnegie Mellon Tartans (4-4, 3-2 MAC) at Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (3-5, 2-3 MAC)
Saturday, November 7, 2009 | 3:30 PM (ET)
Oxford, Ohio – Yager Stadium | No television
Team Overview (C+ overall, C+ offense, C+ defense)
Miami (Ohio) has struggled its friendly confines in 2009, owning just a 1-3 record at Yager Stadium. The Redhawks opened the season with a 59-7 thrashing of FCS bottom-feeder Northeastern, but have since lost home games to Cincinnati (38-24), Central Michigan (28-17), and Akron (40-21). The team overall has split wins and losses in its last four games, with a 28-20 loss at Kent State last weekend following its 34-24 triumph over Eastern Michigan.
Redshirt senior quarterback Daniel Radabaugh (126.9 QB rtg., 148-244, 1,668 yards, 12 TD, 9 INT) is in his second year as a starter and safely on the middle tier of the MAC’s signal-caller rankings. His receiving corps suffered a big loss over the weekend with the suspension of classmate Dustin Woods (36 catches, 394 yards, 4 TD), who accumulated 73 catches, 918 yards, and nine touchdowns last season. With Woods gone on a three-game ban – his second suspension of the season – Radabaugh will target fourth-year juniors Armand Robinson (36 catches, 379 yards, 3 TD) and Donovan Potter (34 catches, 471 yards, 1 TD) more in the passing game. Fifth-year senior Andre Bratton (118 carries, 757 yards, 11 TD; 18 catches, 263 yards, 1 TD) has been very solid as the starting runningback for Miami, and came just two yards shy of hitting 1,000-yard milestone last year.
The Redhawks’ defense is also reeling from a couple of losses, as redshirt junior defensive end Jordan Stevens (21 tackles, 1 sack) and senior outside linebacker Caleb Bostic will miss the remainder of the season with a broken jaw and broken fibula, respectively. Fifth-year senior Travis Craven (21 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) doesn’t quite have the statistics as his All-MAC Second Team campaign last year, but he is one of the better pass rushers in the conference. Another senior, defensive tackle Martin Channels (20 tackles, 2 sacks), joined Craven on last year’s All-MAC Second Team. After those two however, there’s not a lot to be excited about on this side of the ball, with undersized (5’9”, 225 lbs.) freshman middle linebacker Edward Palmer (46 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 FF) showing promise in his collegiate debut.
Senior kicker Trevor Cook (8-16 FG, 27-27 XP) has been in the middle of a downtrend trend, seeing his field goal percentage dip from 76 percent (16-21) in 2007, to 64 percent (18-28) in 2008, to this year’s 50 percent mark. Johnny Duncan (27 punts, 1,131 yards, 41.9 avg., 10 inside 20), a freshman, handles punts for Miami, while with Woods’ (18 kick returns, 403 yards; 11 punt returns, 85 yards) suspension, the returning duties will be passed along to Robinson (15 kick returns, 399 yards, 1 TD; 4 punt returns, 36 yards) and Bratton (4 kick returns, 80 yards).

Cousins must feel a lot better about transferring to CMU than where he was last year, that's for sure! He's been the #1 target that Keyes has needed his entire career, and I'm redshirting one of the more talented freshmen (Eddie Williams) because I really need someone in that role next season, because I'm not super confident in Stephen Carter and the rest of the receiving group.
Thanks for checking in guys, I'll have the game up later today!Comment

Season 4, Game 9: Carnegie Mellon at Miami (Ohio)
The Run Continues: CMU Drop Redhawks with First-Half Rout

OXFORD, Ohio -- Behind four Jim Manning touchdowns, Carnegie Mellon put its foot on the gas in the first half to open up a 31-0 lead and cruised from there, coming away with a comfortable 38-17 victory at Miami (Ohio) this afternoon.
In its fourth season of Division I competition and second at the FBS level, Carnegie Mellon (5-4, 4-2 MAC) now sits a single win shy of bowl eligibility. The aforementioned Manning has now rushed for 200-plus yards in back-to-back games, finishing with 277 total ticks (208 rushing, 69 receiving) on 37 touches (32 carries, 5 catches).
“Jim (Manning) has really raised his game to an even higher level lately,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “His talent is obvious, but he has really put forth the effort in practices and been demanding more and more touches. He knows that we’re doing something special here this season, and he’s really just taken control and been an awesome leader. The guys are feeding off his energy and it’s been so much fun to witness.”
Not to be undone, the Tartans defense also put together a spectacular performance, holding the Miami (Ohio) (2-6, 2-4 MAC) offense to a single field goal entering the fourth quarter. CMU sacked Redhawks quarterback Daniel Radabaugh six times, intercepted him on three occasions, and forced a fourth turnover via fumble.
The visitors got off to a quick start by scoring on their opening drive, as Justin Keyes found Manning on a scramble play and the junior runningback rumbled for a 32-yard score. Matt Johnson then forced the first turnover of the contest with an interception, and the CMU offense gave Manning the ball seven times on the ensuing drive, ending with a six-yard plunge to make it 14-0.
A blitzing Mark Toth stripped Radabaugh of the ball in the second quarter, and it was recovered by David Brown to end a promising Miami drive. A third Manning trip to a paydirt – this one from one yard out – made it 21-0, and CMU quickly got the ball back on offense after a Calvin Burton blitz forced a second Johnson interception. After a Jon Foster field goal extended the gap to 24-0, the Tartans forced a three-and-out and churned out another extended drive, ending in a Manning 12-yard touchdown dash to set the halftime tally at 31-0.
Miami needed help from the crossbar to get on the board, as Trevor Cook’s 55-yard boot barely snuck in, ending CMU’s shutout hopes. The Redhawks briefly put a scare into the visitors in the fourth quarter after a Radabaugh touchdown pass was followed by a three-and-out, which led to an Andre Bratton 68-yard touchdown sprint to make it 31-17. However, the Tartans responded with another long drive, ending in a Keyes 24-yard option keeper to seal the victory.
Johnson finished with six tackles, a sack, and the two interceptions. Todd Andriano added the third pick, while Matt Burnsides collected a pair of sacks from his defensive tackle position.

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
Could Jim Manning be the best Manning ever at the collegiate level? Mike and Mike set to discuss on ESPN Radio this morning. (I was going to say Skip and Stephen A. on First Take, but I don't think that show existed yet at this point in your timeline, haha.)
Excellent to see that Keyes has finally taken that next step to become a very competent game manager and Manning just continues to dominate in MACtion. This year looks like it's going to be an excellent building block for an unreal senior season for the pair of them.Check out my Pitt Panthers Dynasty (NCAA Football 14)
