Yessir! Manning is making it easy to get off to these quick starts when he's breaking off 7 yards a pop on the opening drive. And with Satele really struggling with fumbles this year, I don't really have a second option at RB so he's getting a ton of touches. Glad to head into this homestand with three shots at reaching bowl eligibility, and possibly more!

Hahah his name really does come out of that era! The offense has been superb as of late, but the defense was just as good in this game and at Western Michigan - everything seems to be clicking. Thanks for checking in!

Excellent to see that Keyes has finally taken that next step to become a very competent game manager and Manning just continues to dominate in MACtion. This year looks like it's going to be an excellent building block for an unreal senior season for the pair of them.
I love it! I'm glad you went with Mike & Mike too, since I really dislike those "embrace debate" shows like First Take, haha. I actually looked it up and it looks like First Take started in 2007, so it would definitely be a thing in this timeline - although I'm not sure you could get Skip to take his mind off of LeBron or the Cowboys long enough to discuss a potential All-American runningback at a small college.

Keyes really has taken that next step I feel. He still doesn't have many clean games without an interception, but the new offense allows him to excel as a game manager and do damage with the read option. If both him and Manning are taking this much of a leap in year three, I can only imagine what's in store for 2010!

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Johnson named MAC Defensive Player of the Week
For the second consecutive week, Carnegie Mellon brought home the MAC Defensive Player of the Week award as it was junior outside linebacker Matt Johnson collecting the honors.

Johnson was all over the field in the Tartans’ 38-17 win at Miami (Ohio) this past Saturday, collecting six tackles, a sack, and two interceptions. He has accumulated 56 tackles, one sack, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles this season and looks like a lock to earn All-MAC accolades. In his two-and-a-half seasons with CMU, the Buckeye State-bred linebacker has 206 tackles, 11 sacks, seven interceptions, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a touchdown.

Three-game homestand to finish regular season
Tied with Akron for the MAC East Division lead at 4-2, Carnegie Mellon ends the regular season with three consecutive home games, beginning with a non-conference tilt against Maryland this Saturday.

The Tartans, who need to win one of the next three games to become bowl eligible, follow their non-conference finale up with Kent State and Buffalo. CMU does not play the Zips this season, and it is unclear what the tiebreaker is should the two teams tie for the MAC East lead at the end of 12 games.

          Manning among nation’s leaders
Junior runningback Jim Manning (225 carries, 1,299 yards, 17 TD; 29 catches, 318 yards, 3 TD) has emerged as one of the nation’s best this season, sitting in the top five in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns through nine games.

Manning’s 1,299 rushing yards are the fifth most in the FBS behind Wake Forest redshirt senior Kevin Harris (1,455), Navy sophomore Chris Polk (1,424), Georgia junior Caleb King (1,367), and Colorado fifth-year senior Jake Behrens (1,349). His 17 rushing touchdowns are behind Polk’s 20 for the nation lead, and he occupies the top five with Penn State sophomore Jamie Harper (17), King (16), and West Virginia redshirt senior Jarrett Brown (15).

The Reisterstown, Md. product ran for 1,396 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore and could eclipse some significant milestones over the next couple weeks, as he is 14 ticks shy of 4,000 career rushing yards and three scores below 40 rushing touchdowns.

Jones spurns Carnegie Mellon, commits to Florida State
One week after giving a soft commitment to Carnegie Mellon, three-star tight end David Jones (Louisville, Miss.) solidified his recruitment with a verbal to Florida State during his official visit over the weekend.

Jones, a six-foot-four, 252-pound tight end from Louisville High School, originally had CMU as the favorite for his services, but sided with the Seminoles following his official visit. He was also considering Texas A&M and cancelled his official visit there.

Mikulec, Bracey set for official visits on Nov. 21
Three-star targets Richard Bracey (North Madison, Ohio) and Jim Mikulec (Plum, Pa.) will take their official visits to Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 21 against Kent State.

Bracey, a five-foot-eleven, 175-pound cornerback from Madison High School, has Michigan slightly over the Tartans, with Iowa trailing. CMU is pretty deep at the cornerback position with the top four players on the depth chart slated to return next season, so he could be redshirted in 2010 should he attend.

Mikulec, a six-foot-two, 290-pound offensive tackle from nearby Plum High School, also favors the Wolverines slightly, with Alabama trailing both. He would likely slot in as the backup at both offensive tackle positions in 2010, and be a favorite to start following the graduations of sophomores Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker.

Maryland Terrapins (4-5) at Carnegie Mellon Tartans (5-4)
            Saturday, November 14, 2009 | 8:00 PM (ET)
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Gesling Stadium | FSN Pittsburgh

Team Overview (B overall, B offense, B- defense)
Maryland enters this game needing two wins in its final three contests to secure a bowl berth. The Terrapins have had a strange season, knocking off a now-ranked Virginia squad at home, 28-19, in their fifth game, and completed a 35-28 road upset of Florida State on Halloween two weeks ago. Maryland also has suffered a few blowout losses at home against West Virginia (7-36), Virginia Tech (7-41), and against Arizona (23-36) where the score was 36-10 with three minutes to go.

Tailback is the biggest strength for the Terrapins, led by senior Da’Rel Scott (148 carries, 914 yards, 8 TD; 14 catches, 314 yards, 2 TD). Scott, a two-time All-ACC selection, has rushed for 3,626 yards and 38 touchdowns in his three seasons as the starter. Behind him are a pair of talented sophomores in Isaiah Pead (76 carries, 423 yards, 4 TD) and Andre Ellington (15 carries, 79 yards). Quarterbacking the team is redshirt senior Chris Turner (97.8 QB rtg., 81-175, 1,063 yards, 8 TD, 13 INT), who has struggled since replacing the injured Jamarr Robinson (180.8 QB rtg., 25-34, 364 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT). Turner has a talented trio to throw to in seniors Tony Logan (37 catches, 375 yards, 3 TD) and Torrey Smith (29 catches, 408 yards, 4 TD), and freshman Orson Charles (16 catches, 193 yards, 2 TD), and a potential NFL Draft first round pick blocking his blindside in redshirt senior Andrew Gonnella.

Maryland has a pair of Preseason All-ACC picks on its defense in sophomore defensive tackle Jurrell Casey (15 tackles, 2 sacks) and senior cornerback Brandon Jackson-Mills (13 tackles, 2 INT). The pass rush comes from seniors Travis Ivey (39 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 FR) and Jared Harrell (33 tackles, 3 sacks), while the linebacker corps are made up of three sophomores (Derek Drummond, Tyrone Jackson, Courtney Upshaw) and senior Hakeem Sule (42 tackles, 1 sack). Upshaw (42 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 INT) has had a breakout season after arriving in College Park as a touted recruit last year. Jackson-Mills leads the secondary alongside classmate Anthony Wiseman (22 tackles, 4 INT, 3 TD), but the safety spots are occupied by two first-year starters in sophomore Leon McConnell (21 tackles, 3 INT, 2 FF) and junior college transfer Carlos Arnold (16 tackles, 2 INT).

True freshman Patrick Clay (9-13 FG, 27-27 XP) has had a very solid debut kicking for the Terrapins, and redshirt junior Ted Townsley (31 punts, 1,261 yards, 40.7 avg., 12 inside 20) is in his second season handling the punting duties. Scott (27 kick returns, 591 yards; 12 punt returns, 163 yards) and Wiseman (14 kick returns, 302 yards; 5 punt returns, 74 yards) are the primary returners.

Season 4, Game 10: Maryland at Carnegie Mellon

Terrapins Top Tartans with Second-Half Rout
Carnegie Mellon couldn’t stop Maryland tailback Da’Rel Scott, who rushed for 255 yards and four touchdowns

by Jayson Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Despite a valiant first-half effort, Carnegie Mellon was outclassed in the second half in its non-conference finale, as Maryland scored 30 unanswered points to come away with a 43-14 win this evening at Gesling Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (5-5) held a 14-13 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, but Maryland (5-5) answered with a touchdown on the ensuing drive to take all the momentum into the locker room. The Tartans committed four turnovers to the Terrapins’ zero, and were outgained offensively 484 to 262 yards, including a 281-150 difference on the ground.

“That touchdown at the end of the first half was a backbreaker,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “We didn’t outplay (Maryland) at the start, but we were holding our ground and would have really benefited by leading at halftime. There’s still clearly a gap between us and the Maryland-level schools, which is expected. But we would have liked to perform better over the 60-minute period, especially when we had a couple of leads in the first half.”

The hosts had no answer for Maryland tailback Da’Rel Scott, who rushed for 255 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. However, it was quarterback Chris Turner who would open the scoring with 9:26 to go in the first quarter, as he hooked up with Haroon Brown on a flat route for a 12-yard touchdown. Matt Johnson managed to force an aborted extra point and dragged down the holder, keeping the score at 6-0.

After a couple of empty drives on both sides, CMU broke through with 12:58 remaining in the half as Jim Manning scored on a 10-yard scamper. The extra point was tried and true to put the hosts ahead 7-6, but the Terrapins answered on the legs of Scott, as he ran in untouched from 22 yards out to make it 13-7.

The Tartans answered Scott’s call on the next drive, as Justin Keyes evaded the pass rush to hit Kevin Cousins in the corner of the end zone from 18 yards out. That made the score 14-13 in favor of CMU, a score that nearly held at the break before Scott ripped off a 46-yard run to move Maryland into the red zone. Two plays later, Turner found Torrey Smith from six yards out to make it 19-14 at the break.

A long drive to begin the second half ended in a Kurt Thompson fumble, ending the Tartans’ chance at retaking the lead. The Terrapins then rattled off an extended drive of their own and cashed in with a Scott two-yard plunge to extend the gap to 26-14. Keyes overthrew Cousins on a deep post and Carlos Arnold snagged his first of two interceptions, and another long drive ended in a payoff as Scott dove in from a yard out to make it 33-14 in the fourth quarter, ultimately sealing the game.

Keyes threw for 112 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-20 passing, but was hampered with three interceptions. Manning continued his streak of 100-yard games, netting 119 on 18 carries and the second-quarter trip to paydirt.

Carnegie Mellon returns to Mid-American Conference (MAC) play next week at home when it hosts Kent State on Saturday, November 21.

Holy smokes, Isaiah Pead in the mix for Maryland, too? Man, at least that means that I won't have to worry about him helping contribute to the most devastating loss in the last 15 years for Pitt football haha. I do have a real soft spot for the Terps, so while I hope you can win and reach bowl eligibility, I hope that they give you a good fight. Should be a tough battle, I'm surprised that they are only 4-5 with what looks like a pretty talented group of names, anyways.

EDIT: Oh, well, I was a little slow on my post so I'll add in the post game thoughts as well, haha. Tough loss, like you mentioned after last week's game, Keyes has been a good game manager but it's been tough keeping his statline completely clean and this week was definitely a highlight of that. Always going to be tough when losing the turnover battle and having your opponent run down your throat like that!

Wow, what a game from Scott, but Manning ran well for the Tartans. Rough loss with the 3 picks from Keyes, but bowl eligibility is still on the table, hopefully you guys bounce back next week!

Final score doesn't really do you all justice. Down 19-14 at the half and 26-14 going into the fourth! Solid ground game by you guys but not of great use trying to close the lead. Also, seemed like MD's RB grinded your defense into oblivion. Tough loss but plenty of positives

Wow I figured it would be a tough win, but didn't expect them to blow you out. Scott was like a man-child running over your defense...

Hopefully the team can put this one behind them and concentrate on winning their last 2 and the MAC or at least get the "W" to go bowling.

It's definitely tough keeping Keyes' statline clean when he's really inaccurate on deep passes (always seems to overthrow them), and when I fall into a deficit I try to push things and strike quick and it usually comes back to bite me. Even without the interceptions, it probably would have been tough to beat Maryland since Scott was unstoppable on the ground game. The Terps are in good hands with Ellington and Pead waiting in the wings!

Definitely a rough one, but I think he'll be much better in the final two MAC games coming up. Maryland's secondary was pretty talented and I took chances when facing that second-half deficit.

Manning definitely held his own in the RB battle, but Scott was just ridiculous and won the game single-handily for Maryland. I chalked this up as a loss heading into it though, and look forward to getting into these final two MAC games for a chance to become bowl eligible and potentially clinch a spot in the MAC title game!

For sure, I don't think the 43-13 final score was evidence of how close the game was - even with the big difference in yards. Keeping pace with a talented Maryland team for at least three quarters is definitely a positive with how bad the previous three seasons were!

Maryland is probably a little better than their record shows, and Scott is just unbelievable. I didn't expect him to go off like that, but I expected to have trouble handling him. Our season all comes down to these next two games, so we'll have to forget about this one quickly and bounce back against Kent State!

                          Thanks for checking in everyone!

Three-star trio ready for official visits this weekend
Carnegie Mellon will have three in-season recruiting targets on campus for an official visit this weekend in cornerback Richard Bracey (North Madison, Ohio), wide receiver Jake McMillan (Seven Oaks, S.C.), and offensive tackle Jim Mikulec (Plum, Pa.).

Bracey, a five-foot-eleven, 175-pound defensive back from Madison High School, lists Iowa has a big favorite for his services, with Michigan and CMU coming in at second and third, respectively. The Tartans are getting the cornerback’s first official visit, and hope to convince him to fight for playing time with their talented group of returning defensive backs.

McMillan, a six-foot-two, 195-pound wide receiver from Irmo High School, just added CMU to his top three after it was considered on the second tier for most of the recruiting process. Georgia is an overwhelming favorite with Miami (Fla.) a clear runner-up at this point, but receiving an official visit for the wide receiver is promising for the Tartans.

Mikulec, a six-foot-two, 290-pound offensive tackle from Plum High School, has Michigan as a slight favorite over CMU and Alabama. Out of the three official visits, the Tartans are most confident in landing the commitment of Mikulec, who would initially serve as a swing tackle behind current sophomores Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker.

London gives soft commitment to Carnegie Mellon
The Tartans received a soft commitment from three-star free safety Jabari London (South Laurel, Md.) after his official visit last weekend, but he is set to take other official visits.

London, a six-foot, 191-pound defensive back from Laurel High School, still plans on visiting Vanderbilt and Bowling Green before making his decision. The safety enjoyed his weekend in Oakland and would be excited to compete for playing time in CMU’s talented returning defensive backfield.

Shaw to take official visit to Iowa this weekend
Three-star defensive tackle Chris Shaw (Celina, Ohio) still is on a soft verbal commitment to Carnegie Mellon, but is set to visit Iowa this weekend for his official visit.

Shaw, a six-foot-five, 316-pound defensive lineman from Celina High School, made his official visit to Oakland on Halloween when the Tartans faced Eastern Michigan. He came to campus alongside tight end David Jones (Louisville, Miss.), who recently spurned CMU to commit to Florida State. The defensive tackle has Wisconsin in second and Iowa in third on his recruiting rankings.
