Pretty cool to see a major reviewer like IGN actually giving a legit score rather than tossing up an 8+ like they typically do. Also good to see them highlighting the major performance issues the game is having.

      An IGN 6 is a like a 4 from a reputable reviewer.

Do they call it “a step in the right direction” like they usually do?

That seems like a nice rating, 5-6 is what i would give it. Before any updates will happen i will say most of the game is the same as last year. I do like some of the new animations, especially the tackling animations. But overall most of it is the same to me (franchise wise)

Worth pointing out that it's still a review in progress and score isn't final.

That said, it's amusing to me that some people look down at IGN as if reviews aren't always just a single opinion from one of their writers. There isn't really any pure 100% objective reviewer out there (other than listing features and modes), because we are all going to have biases and preferences. What person A might find feature X enjoyable, doesn't mean that person B is going to necessarily feel the same. That logic can extend towards an entire written review...

Their opinions are just as valid as someone in here or from some random site.

They deserve lower though this is the lowest score I've seen given to them. Glad franchise and a low score are being called out. Seems like piling on EA and keeping pressure on them is the only hope for improving the game.

I'm not really a fan of the madden series these days. Gameplay is always about the same. There seems to be no authenticity and its more arcade than sim. I'd play it to kill some time but there should be a good change to the franchise. EA is smart though. By the licensing and kill the competition lol. NBA live would be around if they could pull that same move

                just love gaming

This was an excellent review and this guy actually sounded like he hangs out with us here on OS.

Seriously. He ripped EA up and down for it’s continued neglect of Franchise mode and presentation continually going backwards.

The gameplay is what reeled me in. Presentation stinks. He nailed that.

It's way too early to grade the game overall however this year's game does feel like it's going earn and deserve every negative review it gets. Maybe they patch a few things without causing more issues and maybe they follow through with the franchise stuff but Madden's track record on patches is iffy at best in my opinion.

I don't think this game is going to be truly playable for me until October/November when the PC modders have had a chance to work on it.

Anyone who does not purchase the game with their own money or otherwise accepts free games or other preferred access (including advanced copies) has a compromised opinion and their reviews are not reliable. Anyone who accepts advertising dollars from any company whose products they are reviewing is not reputable.

That is true in the world of car or watch reviews just as it is in the world of game reviews.

It's interesting to see them go hard at Madden. In the past its always been an 8 or higher and felt like the reviewer didn't really know much about football. I think a few things have happened:

                          1) The #fixmaddenfranchise drew attention to Madden's biggest flaw and meant it was more heavily scrutinised in the review.

                          2) IGN reported on the poor state of Madden and were potentially refused a code. Clint on Twitter alluded to the fact they may not give codes to those who criticize the game (he deleted the tweet afterwards). This may have removed any pressure IGN had to score it more favourably.

                          3) The reviewer is 'one of us'!

                            Yep, nailed franchise and presentation.

On another note, not one mention of #fixfranchise mode and the roadmap.

Not bad with a pandemic and working from home.

The only good reviewer is yourself.

I'd miss out on a ton of movies and music I liked/enjoyed if I listened to everyone else's reviews.

That's why I don't put much stock in reviews.

Obviously we all have key points we focus on in Madden. I am more about gameplay. I find cut screens and presentation more of a speed bump to the onfield action.

Being able to adjust zone depth was a major win in my opinion. The adjustment to speed a bonus. I agree defense should be difficult. I love that screen plays and passes to the flats are finally effective.

I do not appreciate that the CPU offense seems to quick hike every down as this reduces the time I have to make defensive adjustments which cuts down on my enjoyment of the game experience as I prefer defensive play.

But agree, if weighing Franchise heavy on the list of important features, M21 is not an upgrade from M20.
