Madden 21 Review: Execution Not Power Is The Problem Here

This Madden 21 review was always going to be a little tricky to me. This year’s...

Very well written article even if I think you may be a little too lenient

Pretty fair overall, but if I wrote it, it would be scathing

Nice job, Robert. Very well written, insightful, and fair.

"A lack of computational power is not the problem here. Next-gen graphics and physics (while great) are not the missing ingredient here. The ideas and the execution of those ideas is what feels like the broader issue at play here."

I like how the game feels on the field this year, players appropriately carry their weight. I only play franchise mode and it was of course left untouched again. Here's to hoping future updates improve it. Unfortunately, franchise mode is basically unplayable for me because it crashes after EVERY game. Even with autosave on, it crashes before autosave kicks in and the results aren't preserved. So I play a game to determine the winner, it crashes, I reload the file, and force a winner based on the game I just played. Not good.

You sounded like a Good parent trying to make excuses for his bad child to an upset school Principal but I can dig where you were coming from. I've been playing on the PC and I can say that DON'T dislike the game. I personally think they could have went further with some things. Being that they went back to analog stick d-line moves, I wish they would have done the same thing for the Kick meters. If you are going to have relocation team logos and names in face of the franchise as high school teams, why keep those names for relocation. I think they need to flesh out the QB passing out of a sack option and make it more organic. I wish they gave sliders to adjust the game speed like other games. Still no Refs on the field. I do have a slight liking for the way the game plays on the field. I just figure if you are going to leave the game this untouched for franchise, at least let me carry my franchise over from last year. I don't feel the need to start over for new animations. I'm glad MLB The Show gives that option.

See y'all next year. Hopefully the next-gen improvements will make the game worthwhile.

Same here. EA better get it right next year and for next gen. I'm boycotting all EA sports games this year. That's all I have to say.

"Madden 21 delivers some solid improvements on the field in terms of gameplay, animation and player movement"

Seriously? I used to respect OS but this review is bad. The game is terrible. Its 2020...the amount of issues this game has is inexcusable. Players going thru each other, players sliding , the amount of bugs...its embarrassing. If Madden didn't have a monopoly it would be fine, we could just buy another game but we cant. I honestly feel like late 90s or early 2000 Maddens played better...obviously they look better now but its not even close to where it should be 25 years later. Honestly the best thing is if they do what COD does and it rotates between 3 studios every year. That way the development cycle is 3 years and we can see actual improvement

I haven't seen players go through players in any game that I've played this generation, yet.

                      Interesting.

Actually, I respect the review Bob, spot on with game play and FM takes.

Multiple times in one play. Say what you want about Moody, but you cant deny what he says. We need more ppl to demand a change or we are going to keep getting this crap

I am big on immersion in my sports games. I understand some form of clipping is going to happen in video games & I can deal with minor fusion here & there. However the fact that players are STILL clipping COMPLETELY through players bodies in 2020 is inexcusable & embarrassing. Such an immersion killer & really takes away from the experience.

This has been an issue in Madden for years now. The physics & collision detection seem to work well while the play is in action (for the most part), but once again it's so inconsistent post play.

You still have players walking completely through other players bodies who are lying on the field. Players constantly roll right through the legs of lineman who are engaged in an uninterruptible 2 man blocking sequence, etc.

The frustrating part in all this is Madden 16 had all of this cleaned up. The physics & collision detection were implemented very well in that game. Players got up from tackles cleanly. So it's not like EA hasn't done it before. Ever since Madden 16 their collision detection post play has been hit or miss.

My theory is EA is so worried about players tripping & falling over each other like we had in Madden 13, they would rather just let them clip through bodies. That's a horrible way to go about it. I would much rather see the proper physics & collision detection play out with players tripping & falling than see clipping through bodies. Players trip over players irl all the time EA. I know they tried to improve player awareness post play this year but they need to fix the collision detection first.

I understand this may not be a big deal to some but these types of issues should be a thing of the past. I really hope EA puts a priority on this for Next Gen. They'll have all the power & memory space they need so no more excuses.

All that said, the on field gameplay is decent this year. I'm noticing a lot of bugs though...

                            That was sarcasm.

There isn't a sports game that I've played that hasn't had players bodies go through one another, with the exception of golf and tennis.

I don't pay much attention to youtube folks, sorry. I'm the best reviewer of what I need from a game.

Nothing against Moody trying to improve the game.

The review seems fair and accurate to me. It’s been my experience with the game.

Nothing about this screams great game, but it’s fun to play, has some fun modes, and their first crack at team play with your created player is fine.

If they do as little with The Yard for next year as they did with KO Superstar, the mode will fall apart.
