That's the plan! I honestly didn't expect him to still be coaching the Tartans at this point, figuring that the first couple of seasons would have gotten him fired in-game, which then I would have replaced him with another created coach. Regardless of the coaching carousel (or lack thereof in these older titles), this report will be about Carnegie Mellon and its program alone.

Same here, I really like the wide receiver group and I'll have to lean on him more running the ball with how unproven Satele/McIntire are. The MAC seems to be pretty weak as well, so as long as Keyes stays healthy, I think he's in for a huge senior season.

Fantastic preview for what should be an exciting season... great summation of what to look for from the team this season. The way Satele played last year, I could honestly see McIntire pulling a Reynolds and getting the lion's share of the playing time to be honest. Sledge also looks like a gamer as well on offense, I predict him to end up as Keyes' top target, just a feeling. Defensively, you guys should be really good again, and like DFS said Keyes is going to light it up this year for sure.

As for the update frequency, don't worry about having to explain! Everyone has those periods where life has to steal a bit of priority, I've had similar feelings lately, and no need to worry about that. Looking forward to the season getting underway!

Appreciate the kudos on the preview! Agree with the Satele/McIntire situation, Satele has higher ratings but he should have played a lot better than what he did the year before. I figure to throw the ball a lot more and use Keyes as a primary runner, but I'll definitely need a reliable option behind him and McIntire definitely has a good shot of taking that role. Really excited about my receivers, the Williams/Carter/Sledge trio should do well - especially in the MAC - and Butler offers a big-play threat at the WR4 spot. The defense shouldn't miss Johnson and Butler too much, to be honest, and I really think I should hold down the non-Penn State and Pitt teams on my schedule.

For sure, I don't like them being that high but I remembered that being a problem with the older Madden games. I figure guys like Cam Newton will have high ratings immediately since I created them to hopefully contribute immediately after being recruited.

Looking forward to the year. I think it'll be another good one, losing Manning on offense is obviously huge but I could see Keyes stepping up in a major way. Tailback will be an interesting battle between Satele and McIntire.

Also, you're a very good writer. I've gotta start writing some longform stuff for my dynasty man, really enjoyable to read.

Agreed, I think the tailback battle is very interesting and I don't know which way it'll go, but Keyes' progression and the weapons he has at WR should keep this offense humming along. I think there's a real chance we can be even better than what we were the previous season.

And I appreciate the writing kudos, as always. I've always loved to write and really enjoy doing more longform stuff (when I'm not swamped with work or suffering through writer's block, haha), so I'm glad that it's received well! It's the best medium I can use to really add layers to this report, and I hope to crank out more longer reads like that as we go forward this season.

Texas fifth-year tailback Vondrell McGee finished fourth in the 2008 Heisman Trophy voting as a redshirt sophomore

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- Vondrell McGee, the redshirt senior runningback from the University of Texas, was one of 18 players bestowed with a perfect 99 rating by Pro Football Focus (PFF), as part of the organization’s preseason rankings released earlier today.

Team Overview (C- overall, D+ offense, C- defense)
Two years ago, a winless Duke and struggling Carnegie Mellon team played one of the most exciting games of the 2008 season, with the Tartans aided by an inexplicable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to snag a last-minute 41-37 win. The Blue Devils completed the 0-12 trek weeks later, and after a 6-6 campaign last year, they could repeat their disastrous 2008 after being picked last in the ACC Coastal division.

Redshirt sophomore Nate Henry (85.4 QB rtg., 11-22, 101 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT*) won a three-way battle in fall camp for the starting quarterback job, outlasting fourth-year junior Mike Cappetto and true freshman Nathan Ford. His classmate Tracy Rogers (134 carries, 696 yards, 6 TD; 15 catches, 167 yards, 3 TD) will lead a timeshare at tailback alongside redshirt senior Brandon King, and they’ll run an offensive line that features two new starters in third-year left tackle Chad Church and sophomore right guard Victor Flanagan. Fifth-year senior Jeremy Ringfield (56 catches, 665 yards, 2 TD) leads the receiving corps, buoyed by sophomore Kurt Bell (53 catches, 429 yards, 4 TD), redshirt junior Garrett Utt (21 catches, 210 yards, 1 TD), and fifth-year senior Danny Parker (20 catches, 309 yards, 3 TD) at tight end.

On defense, senior end Ireke Okpokowuruk (10 tackles) – brother of the now graduated Ayanga Okpokowuruk, who committed the aforementioned unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in 2008 – is the top returning player, having five career sacks to his name. He’s flanked by true freshman Tommy Hardy at the other defensive end spot, while redshirt senior Pontus Bondeson (30 tackles, 1 sack) is a three-year starter at defensive tackle. Duke features two first-year starters at linebacker in sophomore Cornelius Edwards (11 tackles) and true freshman Zach Anderson, and will look upon fifth-year senior Ryan Radloff (63 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 TD) for leadership in that unit. In the secondary, redshirt sophomore Sean Cook (44 tackles, 2 INT, 1 FF) impressed in a starting role, but the rest of the group will be entering their first years as starters.

Former junior college kicker John Gunn (7-20 FG, 26-26 XP) has struggled with the Blue Devils, with his longest field goal being 42 yards. Redshirt senior Kevin Jones (54 punts, 2,460 yards, 45.6 avg., 25 inside 20) is another returnee at punter, as is Ringfield (28 kick returns, 520 yards; 17 punt returns, 140 yards) as a kick and punt returner.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Fresh off a breakout 7-7 season, Carnegie Mellon handled its new expectations with relative ease, easily disposing of Duke, 52-7, in both teams’ regular-season opener this afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (1-0) was selected to finish second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East division – compared to Duke’s (0-1) basement projection in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coastal division – and returned 17 starters as well as its entire special teams unit, and showed no rust by jumping out to a 21-0 lead over the opening 20 minutes. The Tartans’ multi-faceted offense accumulated 498 yards (274 pass, 224 rush), while the defense collected six sacks and five interceptions.

“You really can’t ask for a better start to the season,” said CMU fifth-year head coach John Elliott. “Our team has looked great all fall camp on both sides of the ball, and really proved today that it wasn’t a mirage. The defense was phenomenal, and I love the tweaks (offensive coordinator) Jules Nottingham made with the spread look. I really have nothing to complain about after today, though I’m sure as we comb through the film tomorrow, there’ll be a few things that jump out.”

The Tartans defense kicked things off by forcing consecutive three-and-outs, the second one ending in David Brown’s first of three sacks. CMU took advantage following the takedown, churning out a 10-play, 70-yard drive that concluded with a Justin Keyes eight-yard touchdown run. Duke followed that up with a strong drive of its own, only to see it end in nothing after a Charlie Cohen interception.

The CMU offense went right back to work, rattling off 75 yards in eight plays with Keyes finding new favorite target Eddie Williams on a seven-yard score to make it 14-0. Erik Sellers brought in the second interception in as many drives to set up Nate Satele, as his two yard plunge finished off a six-play, 51-yard drive to paydirt. Keyes and crew made it 28-0 on their next drive by finding David Young on 16-yard post, and after an Aaron Crosby interception, Williams took a jet sweep and raced 29 yards untouched to set the halftime tally at 35-0.

The visitors’ streak continued to open the third quarter, as Keyes’ three-yard scramble capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive. Another Blue Devil three-and-out set up a 35-yard punt return for Kelvin Butler, but the hosts were able to salvage some pride by forcing a 50-yard field goal attempt by Jon Foster. That semblance of pride turned into exasperation quickly as Foster booted it through the uprights to up the score to 45-0.

Duke finally dented the scoreboard with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter as backup quarterback Mike Cappetto found Jeremy Ringfield on a six-yard slant. Both teams would play the majority of the final frame with their reserves in, and redshirt senior Clarence Cabral scored his first collegiate touchdown with 4:04 to play to set the final at 52-7.

Williams was arguably the game’s biggest star, as the redshirt freshman compiled 124 yards on nine catches and two total touchdowns. Keyes was pretty much perfect, compiling 284 yards (230 pass, 54 rush) and four scores (2 pass, 2 rush) on 16-of-20 passing.

“There were times last year where I wanted to pull the redshirt off of Eddie (Williams),” said Elliott. “But I knew that we had a bigger plan for him, and boy, did he deliver today. Between him and the rest of the receiving corps, we really have a multitude of ways we can move the ball on teams.”

As for the biggest pregame storyline of replacing now Chicago Bears runningback Jim Manning, the answer is still incomplete. Five different runningbacks received a carry – as well as Keyes and two wide receivers – but none eclipsed 54 rushing yards. Satele, who scored in the second quarter, led all Tartans with 12 totes, but his yards-per-carry mark of 2.9 paled in comparison to true freshman Lawrence McIntire, who scampered for 49 yards on seven carries.

Todd Andriano and Hayden Temple also snagged interceptions in addition to Cohen, Crosby, and Sellers. Mark Toth led all players with 10 tackles.

Jon Crowell, an Associated Press Freshman All-America pick as a return specialist last season, was helped off the field in the second quarter with an ankle injury and didn’t return.

Carnegie Mellon begins the toughest two-game stretch of its Division I era next weekend as it plays rival Pitt in the annual Steel City Showdown.
