Let's goooooo! This is the start, 11-1 CMU here we go (still can't beat Pitt )! Talk about a comfortable win! Keyes with a fantastic performance, kept great control of the ball and made no mistakes. Love the running back by committee approach, I think that may be the move going forward until someone takes definite control of the backfield. Hopefully Williams can keep things up against more solid competition, because it will be huge to have a true number one who can replace what you lost in Kevin Cousins.

Great all around game. Huge game for Eddie, Keyes was sold, McIntire looked like he might be pushing for more carries and the Defense stepped up huge with all those INT's.. Nice way to start the season

Yes he does! He was definitely a gem (if NCAA 08 had those) in recruiting, and his ratings with a redshirt year and summer camp drills have him just a few ticks under Kevin Cousins' ratings from last season. I envisioned him taking a leading role in the WR group this year, and redshirted him before partially because of how focused the offense would be on Manning. Eddie's going to be special.

Hahaha I'll definitely take 11-1 even if I can't beat Pitt! Honestly if I knew Duke was going to be this bad, I would have found a way not to play them - but I remembered that our "series" was a home-and-home and I needed to finish it, lol. Keyes is going to have an incredible year I feel now that he's in his fourth year and the focal point, and the recruiting classes have taken shape to surround him with weapons. Agreed with the backfield-by-committee approach, McIntire was definitely the most impressive in this one but it'll still be a heavy split between him and Satele for now, with Austin Jones maybe getting a carry here and there.

Definitely was an all-around win, for sure. The defense was so dominant, though it helped that Duke's starting QB was awful and couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. I really liked what I got out of David Brown, he's a talented speed-rusher who was a two-star MLB in recruiting, but he has taken to the DE position well. Plus him and Burnsides line up beside each other, so one of the two are going to provide the pressure on most snaps!

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Keyes named MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Senior quarterback Justin Keyes has been named MAC Offensive Player of the Week following his strong start to the season at Duke last weekend.

Keyes, in his fourth year as the starting signal-caller, had his most efficient performance as a collegian with 284 total yards (230 pass, 54 rush) and four touchdowns (2 pass, 2 rush) on 16-of-20 passing. He posted a 209.6 quarterback rating, which is nearly higher than his previous two seasons combined (89.5 in 2008, 126.5 in 2009).

Manning, Johnson listed second on respective depth charts; Burton out for season
In the NFL’s first release of regular-season depth charts, Chicago Bears runningback Jim Manning and Tennessee Titans linebacker Matt Johnson were listed second on their respective depth charts.

Manning, who is behind sixth-year pro Cedric Benson, was given a lot of work in the preseason. He ranked fifth in carries (66) and 14th in rushing yards (245) over the four-game slate, and netted his first touchdown on August 28 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He followed that up with a 102-yard day against Johnson’s Titans, securing his role as Benson’s understudy in his rookie campaign.

Johnson went undrafted but was signed quickly by the reigning Super Bowl champions, and will sit behind third-year All-Pro Keith Rivers at the left outside linebacker position. He netted eight tackles in the four preseason games, highlighted by a four-tackle day in the aforementioned game against Manning’s Bears.

Calvin Burton won’t be able to join his former teammates on the field in the regular season this year, as he suffered torn ACL in the New Orleans Saints’ final preseason contest against the Cleveland Browns. Burton was listed as the fourth cornerback on the depth chart behind Jason David, Kelly Jennings, and Terrence Wheatley, and made one pass deflection in the preseason.

Crowell lost for season, denied medical redshirt
Redshirt sophomore cornerback and return specialist Jon Crowell will miss the rest of the season with a dislocated ankle, and has been denied a medical redshirt by the NCAA.

Crowell, an Associated Press Freshman All-American last season, suffered the injury on a second-quarter punt return and had to be helped off the field. The third-year player was also starting at cornerback for the first time, picking up two tackles as well as gaining 19 yards on a pair of punt returns. He missed five games of his redshirt freshman campaign with a torn shoulder muscle, though was able to return for the Tartans’ Champs Sports Bowl appearance against No. 14 Iowa.

Freshman wide receiver Kelvin Butler (2 kick returns, 33 yards; 3 punt returns, 40 yards) will take over as the primary returner, while junior colleague Stephen Carter (26 kick returns, 495 yards; 10 punt returns, 50 yards in 2009) moves into the number two role.

Crosby suspended four games for senioritis
Senior linebacker Aaron Crosby has been suspended for four games after an unexcused excessive missing of classes.

Crosby had a great opening to the 2010 season, tallying nine tackles, a sack, an interception, and a forced fumble against Duke. He had 41 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, and fumble recovery in a reduced role last year, and will miss games against Pittsburgh, Penn State, Ball State, and Bowling Green. He is set to return Oct. 9 against Toledo.

Chris Hill, a junior who had 42 tackles and a sack in 2009, will start in his place.

Trio of three-stars keep CMU in top five
Carnegie Mellon has made the top five of three of its in-season recruiting targets: tight end Morgan Cook, linebacker Tom Cook (no relation), and cornerback Andrew Davis.

Morgan Cook, a six-foot-five, 255-pound tight end from Takoma Park, Md., has the Tartans tied for third with Virginia and Yale. Virginia Tech is a big favorite as of now, with Marshall trailing.

Tom Cook, a six-foot-four, 213-pound local product from Woodland Hills High School, lists Pitt as his favorite, followed by a tie for second between Penn and Kentucky. CMU and acronym twin Central Michigan are tied for fourth.

Davis, a five-foot-eleven, 185-pound defensive back from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, also has the Tartans tied for fourth, alongside North Carolina State. Michigan State leads for the cornerback’s services, with Virginia and Navy in second and third, respectively.

Trying to remember but in 2006 was skipping class's a real way to be suspended or did you just create that one.

Bummer deal about Crowell, hopefully you can find a spark back there to help give you solid field position.

Love the updates on Manning and company.. If Cedric Benson's video game career ends up like his real career, he will be starting in no time.

Chicago was actually where one of BSU's first ever great RB's went as well (Brock Forsey) in the 6th round of the 2003 draft, but like Manning faced a crowed backfield that included Thomas Jones and Anthony Thomas and was never able to really get things going, bounced around to the Dolphins and then the Redskins but was never able to get ahold of a starting job.

Recruiting is looking solid so far hopefully you can get a couple in-season guy's.. Landing both Cook's would be big win's for both sides of the ball.

Love the infusion of the CMU updates alongside with a look at CMU guys in the pros! That's something I'd love to in my chise as well, it's just annoying (but also cool) that Madden makes you put the draft class in at the start of the previous season essentially so it's tough to know who needs to be put in the draft class the season before and to be able to get updates at the same time, but I digress...

Should be a great season on the NCAA landscape, love seeing how things change and expecting that Texas Tech offense to put up some huge numbers!

That's a real suspension for Crosby. The game gave him an academic suspension of two games (which was bumped up to four with CMU's academic restrictions), and the description was for missing classes. Guess he legitimately had a case of senioritis.

I'm more worried about the Crowell loss at CB than KR to be honest, because Kelvin Butler should be dynamic there. It would be one thing if I were forced to let Stephen Carter handle all the returns again, but I would not be the least bit surprised if Butler copies Crowell's frosh AA designation as a returner.

I've heard of Brock Forsey, that was early 2000s I'm pretty sure! Fantastic name, but it was a crowded runningback room as you said with Thomas Jones and the A-Train. Manning should see some immediate playing time with the Bears, though Benson has progressed well so it might take some of my assistance to get him into that starting role.

Is exporting the draft class before the season just on "next-gen"? (I put next-gen in quotation marks since you can't really consider PS4 and XBox One in that category anymore, haha.) I can see the up and downside to that though, but ultimately it's more a negative because you can't add those breakout players. I don't plan on giving weekly updates with the CMU pros as of now since none of them are in starting roles, though I will be keeping tabs on their weekly performances and add them into Tartan Tidbits should they do something notable.

4.75, so not lightning quick but since I'm so thin at TE (though I don't use the position much), he'd be a huge get should he choose CMU! Would allow me to more 2TE sets with David Young next season and take over the starting role after that.

Team Overview (B overall, B+ offense, B- defense)
Pitt was selected to finish sixth in the Big East this season, but believes it has the returning talent to finish inside the top three. The offense is led by senior tailback LeSean McCoy (193 carries, 1084 yards, 8 TD; 23 catches, 372 yards, 2 TD*), one of the nation’s most talented backs who was an All-Big East Second Team pick last year. Classmate Pat Bostick (126.4 QB rtg., 207-382, 2,485 yards, 30 TD, 16 INT) returns for his second season as the starting quarterback, impressing after arriving on campus with a four-star pedigree. His receiving corps returns the experienced Aundre Wright (41 catches, 515 yards, 5 TD) and T.J. Porter (44 catches, 485 yards, 11 TD) – who have 32 career touchdowns between them – and ushers in new faces in redshirt junior Maurice Williams and true freshman Chance Watkins at tight end.

Fifth-year linebacker Michael Toerper (74 catches, 3 sacks, 2 INT, 2 FF, 2 FR, 1 TD) is a two-time All-Big East Second Team pick as the leader of the defense, while Jabaal Sheard (29 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FR) joined him on the 2008 team following a four-sack season. Opposite of Sheard on the defensive line is Greg Romeus (46 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF), with redshirt sophomore Matt Thomas (20 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF) and true freshman Wesley Bednarik plugging the middle. Toerper and classmate Nate Nix (8 tackles) flank Justin Hargrove (61 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 TD) in the linebacker slots, giving the Panthers a bevy of experience there. The same can’t be said for the secondary, as that unit features the projected first-year starters: junior Brett Brothers and true freshman Jonathan Green at cornerback, redshirt sophomore Issac Wilson at free safety, and redshirt junior Buddy Jackson at strong safety.

Sophomore kicker Dee Jones (5-14 FG, 45-45 XP) had a nightmare rookie season, making just 35 percent of his field goals with a long of 44 yards. True freshman Shane Berry takes over at punter, while McCoy (35 kick returns, 977 yards; 26 punt returns, 216 yards) features as the team’s primary returner.

Very worried about what you may do to that Pitt pass defense, so here's is to hoping that Shady can put together a strong performance to both get Pitt on the scoreboard but also to keep your offense off of the field, as I think Jules really has the gameplan dialed in this season. Hoping for a win but expecting a much more competitive showdown than these matchups have been in the past.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Since the renewal of the Carnegie Mellon-Pitt rivalry – dubbed the Steel City Showdown – the Panthers have held their firm grip on the city’s power structure, with the Tartans slowly inching closer to their level. Today’s clash was easily the most evenly played since the annual bout returned in 2006, yet Pitt still showed its superiority with a 35-25 victory over its crosstown rivals.

Pitt (1-0) was well on its way to another comfortable win over Carnegie Mellon (1-1), forcing four turnovers over the opening 30 minutes to claim a 29-7 advantage at halftime. The Tartans responded with 18 unanswered points to pull within four, but the hosts’ defense tightened and drove the final nail in CMU’s coffin with a 65-yard touchdown in the closing minutes.

“We dug ourselves into too big of a hole with those early mistakes,” said Tartans fifth-year head coach John Elliott. “It seemed like after that opening drive we couldn’t get out of our own way, and you can’t trip over your own feet that many times against a team as good as Pitt. I was proud of the fight in the second half to make it close, but despite us getting closer in this rivalry, we didn’t deserve to win because of how much of a disaster that first half was.”

Following a Panthers’ three-and-out to start the game, the Tartans pieced together a 10-play, 65-yard drive on the strength of five Justin Keyes completions, ending with a four-yard hookup to Eddie Williams. CMU then forced a turnover on Pitt’s next drive as Todd Andriano snagged an overthrown deep ball, but Williams fumbled a first-down catch back to the Panthers to start the snowball effect.

Pitt only netted a field goal after the first turnover, but Justin Hargrove picked off a Keyes throw five plays later, leading to a LeSean McCoy 11-yard touchdown scamper. While Mark Toth managed to block the extra point, the Tartans nearly gave the Panthers another chance after the kickoff as Nate Satele fumbled. A coach’s challenge overturned the ruling on the field, but CMU punted it back following a three-and-out, and Pat Bostick connected with T.J. Porter on a miracle 45-yard bomb of his back foot to push the gap to 15-7 after another blocked extra point.

Satele’s day would be short-lived as the booth didn’t save him from a second lost fumble, this also coming on the first play of the Tartans’ next drive. The visitors managed to get a stop and after another failed offensive drive, Chris Hill picked off Bostick to put CMU in good field position. That good fortune was squashed quickly however, as Keyes and Lawrence McIntire weren’t on the same page on an option play, giving another fumble away to the Panthers. That led to another back-breaking touchdown, as Kevin Collier was left wide open in the flat and raced 69 yards untouched to paydirt to make it 22-7.

The hits kept coming for the Tartans as Jon Foster pushed a 35-yard field goal wide right, and Pitt kept the gas pedal pushed to the floor with another touchdown drive capped by a McCoy six-yard dash. CMU responded with a solid two-minute drill, only to see it falter at the end as a third-and-goal play was stopped short, forcing Keyes to rush a fourth-down throw to Stephen Carter, which the junior wide receiver dropped as time expired.

The Tartans struck on their opening drive of the second half, as Keyes connected with Williams on a 42-yard touchdown pass and ran in the two-point conversion to make it 29-15. CMU then forced a stop defensively and stringed together a nine-play, 47-yard trek on offense, finishing with a Foster 22-yard field goal to pull the visitors within 11. Three consecutive three-and-outs followed to put the Tartans back in business at the end of the third quarter, and McIntire broke through on a 44-yard read option burst to make it 29-25 at the end of three.

Pitt’s defense tightened after the CMU third-quarter run, forcing a trio of punts to keep it a four-point game. Facing a punt of their own with 3:35 to play, the Panthers instead provided the dagger to the Tartans’ comeback hopes, as Bostick unleashed a bomb to Aundre Wright for a 65-yard touchdown. Hill managed to block another extra point to keep it 35-25, but ultimately sealed the game.

“(Carnegie Mellon) has come a long way,” said Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt. “They gave us a great battle today and with a few breaks, they could have won this game. I’m proud of our guys for hanging tough and coming away with the win, but I also give a ton of credit to the guys on the other side – Coach (John) Elliott has built an impressive program over there.”

Keyes finished the afternoon 20-of-37 passing for 284 yards, an interception, and the two touchdown tosses to Williams. The redshirt freshman receiver snagged seven receptions for 111 yards in his second collegiate game, and McIntire was CMU’s leading rusher with 69 yards on 14 carries.

Bostick threw for a career-high 359 yards and three scores on 19-of-30 passing, but also tossed the two interceptions to Hill and Andriano. McCoy coupled his two touchdowns with 127 scrimmage yards (91 rushing, 36 receiving) on 31 touches (27 carries, 4 receptions).

The road doesn’t get any easier for Carnegie Mellon, as it travels to No. 1 Penn State next Saturday, Sept. 18 for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.

Always tough to overcome 4 turnovers, and you are probably right the impact of Crowell's loss at CB was felt as Bostic went deep on you a couple times.

Solid game for McIntire though and Keyes and Eddie seem to have a solid connection.

Just remember to tell your players, Penn State puts their pants on the same way they do. Just because they have a #1 ranking doesn't mean they are unbeatable.
