Not a bad day at all, great win over Ball State. Solid start to the year, PSU game was ugly but that's to be expected.

Appreciate it, james - means a lot! Each game report should be linked on the front page and there's a synopsis of the first three years here, should you want to save a little bit of time: https://forums.operationsports.com/f...&postcount=394

Nice to see you back in here, young! Definitely was a good day against Ball State and really a solid start to the season despite the losses to Pitt and Penn State. Still trying to get some consistency in the running game, but Keyes' ascent with Williams' emergence on offense, plus the defensive playmakers I have should lead to a big season now that we're in MAC play!

Speaking of which, hope all of you had a nice holiday season! I played the Bowling Green game last night and it was definitely one of the craziest I've had in the report so far. I'll write up the recap and post it tomorrow!

Season 5, Game 5: Carnegie Mellon at Bowling Green

Toth’s Blocked Extra Point Seals Roller Coaster Win
Mark Toth deflected a game-tying extra point with 1:02 remaining, helping the Tartans move to 2-0 in the MAC

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The campus of Bowling Green State University is approximately 56 miles west of Cedar Point Amusement Park, which dubs itself as the roller coaster capital of the world. On Saturday afternoon, it felt like the Mid-American Conference (MAC) contest between the Falcons and Carnegie Mellon was played on one of Cedar Point’s 18 thrill rides, as the Tartans escaped with a 42-41 victory thanks to a blocked extra point.

The game featured 83 combined points and four deadlocks, but the teams combined to turn it over eight times. Carnegie Mellon (3-2, 2-0 MAC) received a career-high four touchdown passes – and an additional one on the ground – from Justin Keyes, only to see Bowling Green (1-4, 0-1 MAC) redshirt freshman Adam Gilmore outdo him with six touchdown tosses, but three of the Tartans’ turnovers came on Keyes’ fumbles while Gilmore threw three interceptions.

“Really fortunate we were able to come away with a victory today,” said CMU fifth-year head coach John Elliott. “We weren’t ourselves defensively and took too many chances trying to confuse a young quarterback. Our offensive line also has to do a better job at protecting Justin (Keyes). Bowling Green has two talented defensive ends and Justin can help the guys up front out by extending plays with his legs, but they were on him too quickly and too often all day today. Thankful that Mark (Toth) was able to shoot through in the end and make an All-American type play, because I don’t think we deserved to win at all.”

After Brandon Brewer was stuffed on a fourth-down conversion, the Falcons marched right down and scored on their opening drive as Gilmore found Jermiah Kelley for the first of three hookups. The Tartans answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass between Keyes and Eddie Williams to tie it at 7-7, then the visitors strung together another promising drive before Lawrence McIntire put the ball on the ground with his first carry of the afternoon.

Todd Andriano snagged his fifth interception of the season on BGSU’s ensuing drive, and McIntire nearly gave it back again before Anthony Tremblay fell on the loose ball. CMU took advantage of its second life, as Keyes scrambled in from five yards out to make it 14-7 after a quarter, but the senior quarterback couldn’t extend the lead to two scores on the next drive after he was stripped of the football on a Michael Ream sack.

BGSU and CMU continued trading points on their possessions, as Gilmore connected with Kelley and Andrew Joseph for scores and Keyes hooked up with Williams on a 65-yard bomb to push the score to 21-21. The momentum swung back in favor of the Tartans at the end of the half however, as Kelvin Butler stiffarmed a would-be tackler on an 88-yard kick return touchdown, and after a Matt Burnsides strip-sack of Gilmore, Keyes found a wide-open Butler on a 39-yard score to make it 35-21 at halftime.

Another strip-sack of Keyes gave the Falcons another chance after a three-and-out, and Gilmore took advantage with a 12-yard toss to Kelley to pull the hosts within seven. BGSU’s defense continued to make it rough on the CMU offensive line, forcing a third fumble from the senior quarterback to stamp out a promising drive, leading to Gilmore’s fifth touchdown pass of the afternoon – a 55-yard bomb to Joseph over the head of Hayden Temple. That’s when the redshirt freshman Williams channeled his inner Jim Manning, dragging a Falcons cornerback five yards on a skinny post to score a go-ahead 22-yard touchdown with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

The scoring stopped after Williams’ herculean effort, as Temple made up for his mistake with a pair of interceptions but CMU’s offense couldn’t quite add an insurance score. With 1:51 left, the Tartans punted it back to BGSU but pinned the hosts at their own 13. After an incompletion and Erik Sellers sack, Gilmore faced a third-and-13 and pressure from David Brown off the edge, but stood in and connected with a wide-open Andre Debose down the right sideline for a 62-yard touchdown.

Overtime seemed like it was on the horizon, but extra points aren’t a sure thing against CMU as it has blocked eight since the start of the 2007 season. Mark Toth made it nine at the most crucial time, slipping through a crack in the Falcons line to get his hand on Fred Mathis’ attempt to keep it 42-41. Mathis tried to provide some heroics of his own on the onside kick, but David Young corralled it and fell down to secure a wild Tartans victory.

Keyes accumulated 385 yards (322 pass, 63 rush) offensively despite being sacked five times. Williams was stellar once again, catching nine passes for 172 yards and three scores.

Gilmore nearly doubled his season total in passing yards, throwing for 459 yards and the aforementioned six touchdowns. Joseph and Debose were over the century mark receiving with 181 and 152 yards, respectively, while Kelley added 70 yards on six receptions and three trips to paydirt.

CMU’s defense brought down Gilmore eight times with Burnsides and Brown both collecting a pair of sacks.

Carnegie Mellon begins a three-game home stand on Saturday, October 9 at 6:00 p.m. with a rematch of the 2009 MAC Championship Game against Toledo.

Eddie the Eagle Williams is flying... Dude has been a beast for you. Has to feel pretty amazing to win a game with a blocked XP attempt.. Your secondary got torched for some big plays, but I am sure it was a fun one to play

I'm already running out of adjectives for Williams, and it's only his first year! Might be the best gem I've ever found in an NCAA game, it helps that I was able to boost his ratings in fall camp drills but he also earned a big bump in natural progression in the offseason.

Definitely was a fun one to play, though I do feel a little guilty about winning on a blocked extra point because it's been entirely too easy to do for the CPU-controlled players in NCAA 08. We definitely didn't play our best game, though the would-be game-tying touchdown was a pretty fluky play so it really should have been an outright win. Either way, I'll take it!

Thanks sgf, nice to see you back in here! Definitely was a much-needed one, especially if I'm looking to get back to another MAC Championship Game!

Eddie Williams, man. The guy is a freak and is going to shatter every CMU receiving record that there is by the time his career is done. He seems to play like the type of receiver that even when you have to play Wilson or whoever at QB next season, he's just so good that he's going to make that QB better regardless (almost like a Larry Fitz at Pitt situation). Also, I know it was a little OP back in the older PS2 games, but winning a game on a blocked kick has to be an incredible rush. The fact that you can't even block a kick EVER in 2014 is just insufferable, especially because college is much more likely to see blocks than the pros, even if not at the rate as I'm sure you're seeing. What a great finish, and setting you up I think for another run at the MAC title for sure, especially with the chemistry you're finding between Keyes and Williams.

Also, imagine telling readers that Season 1 Keyes would eventually be going for near 400 yard games with 5 TDs and no turnovers?! No one would ever believe you, hahah.

Never.. I was calling for Keyes head in Season 1. I was like put in the cheerleader, this guy sucks. A bum on the street would be a better option, but I will eat my words, he turned into a decent player.

Agreed wholeheartedly on Williams! He's the kind of guy who will succeed with any quarterback, and should give Wilson or whoever follows Keyes an easier time with how reliable he's become already out wide. He's definitely going to destroy every receiving record at CMU and make it hard for others to top it!

Keyes' ascent has been a joy to witness, and one of the more unlikely jumps I've had in my NCAA career. Even last year he dealt with the interception bug a little too often, but it's been night and day between these last two seasons compared to his freshman and sophomore ones. Both natural progression and the change of offense helped, because he was definitely a square peg in a round hole those first two years, and really shouldn't have been the guy I recruited back then if I was trying to run a pro-style. I believe he was one of the only two-star quarterbacks both interested and qualified awareness-wise back when I brought him in.

Hahaha when Keyes can turn you around on him, you know he did something right! The criticism those first couple seasons was legitimate, but really he was just a victim of a thin, untalented roster and had to play even if he wasn't ready to. If I didn't land Keyes after that first season, I'm not sure what I would have done QB wise having to fare with 50ish overall Alex Smith for another full year!

                          Crosby returns from senioritis suspension
Carnegie Mellon will receive a boost for its defense this week against Toledo as senior outside linebacker Aaron Crosby will return following a four-game academic suspension.

Crosby, a four-year starter in the linebacker corps, has nine tackles, one sack, one interception, and a forced fumble this season. He was suspended after the opener against Duke after an excessive absence from classes.

                          Tartans impressed by freshmen playmakers
CMU is 3-2 for the first time in its Division I history, and part of that success can be attributed to a pair of freshman wide receivers in second-year Eddie Williams and first-year Kelvin Butler.

Williams, who redshirted the 2009 season after arriving from Bishop Carroll High School, has been spectacular in his first five collegiate games. He has compiled 540 yards and seven touchdowns on 38 receptions, while adding 134 yards and two scores on 11 carries rushing. The six-foot-three wideout is on pace to shatter the numbers set by Penn State transfer Kevin Cousins last season, as Cousins led the Tartans with 79 catches, 1,124 yards, and seven touchdowns.

Butler, a two-star recruit from Madeira, Ohio, has added a new element to the CMU roster with his 4.35 40-yard dash speed. He has scored three touchdowns – two on kick returns – despite being listed as the fifth wide receiver on the depth chart. While fellow true freshman Travis Sledge came in with a higher ranking and pedigree, Butler has made a bigger impact thus far with his dynamic game-breaking ability.

                          Toledo game unavailable on television
If you’re looking to follow this week’s Carnegie Mellon-Toledo game, you will either have to buy a ticket or listen to the radio because it will not be shown on any television station, including campus TV.

This is because of Toledo’s two-year television ban, handed down in the offseason along with a three-year scholarship reduction for a lack of institutional control. The Rockets have gotten off to a 3-1 start and won their MAC opener despite the penalties, but those contests have only been able to be followed via radio.

                          Gilmore keeps Tartans in hunt
Three-star runningback Jeff Gilmore (Winnipeg, Manitoba) has trimmed his list from eight to five schools, with Carnegie Mellon remaining in the hunt as one of the favorites.

Gilmore, a five-foot-eight, 200-pound tailback from Portage Collegiate, has Wisconsin as his favorite followed by the Tartans. Michigan, Boise State, and Rutgers also made the cut for his services. He would likely compete for playing time immediately despite a deep runningback room, with CMU bringing in four (Brandon Handy, Kyle Holland, Dante Joseph, Lawrence McIntire) in this past recruiting class.

Bush leaves CMU out of top five
Three-star offensive tackle Mike Bush (Fostoria, Ohio) will move forward in his recruitment without CMU, he announced over the weekend.

Bush, a six-foot-six, 304-pound lineman from Fostoria High School, has compiled a top five of Marshall, Iowa, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana. The Tartans are highly pursuing an offensive tackle or two in this year’s class with starting bookends Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker both being juniors.

Team Overview (C- overall, D+ offense, C- defense)
Toledo enters this matchup with a 3-1 record and 1-0 mark in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), having won its league opener at Western Michigan, 31-14. The Rockets don’t possess as explosive of an offense as last year’s undefeated bunch, but with a season-opening 27-7 victory at Purdue, they aren’t a slouch by any stretch despite facing NCAA sanctions.

Taking over for Heisman Trophy finalist Aaron Opelt is redshirt junior dual-threat Travaris Cadet (136.7 QB rtg., 61-113, 768 yards, 10 TD, 3 INT; 24 carries, 135 yards, 1 TD), who has gotten off a good start to the season. Cadet is one of nine new starters on offense, as well as fifth-year senior tailback Dontae Jones (52 carries, 356 yards, 1 TD; 5 catches, 59 yards, 3 TD), who takes over for the graduated DaJuane Collins. Redshirt junior Carl Ford (18 catches, 179 yards, 1 TD) had 44 receptions and five scores as the third wide receiver last season, while classmate Tim Cortazzo (23 catches, 272 yards, 3 TD) and redshirt freshmen Dustin Kane (14 catches, 203 yards, 2 TD) and Zach Garrison (8 catches, 57 yards, 1 TD) have settled into their new starting roles. Alongside Ford, redshirt senior offensive tackle Chris Meenan was a starter on last year’s team.

The Rockets’ defense features a pair of talented defensive ends in senior J.P. Bekasiak (6 tackles) and fifth-year Skylaar Constant (12 tackles, 1 sack), the latter being an All-MAC First Team pick in 2009 following a five-sack season. Junior middle linebacker Josh Pitts (22 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 TD) has accumulated 142 tackles over his three years as a starter, while redshirt senior Archie Donald (17 tackles, 1 sack, 2 INT, 2 FF) serves as the defensive captain at the left outside spot. The secondary is extremely young with four new starters in redshirt sophomores Tavares Harrell (12 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FR), Lee Williams (9 tackles, 1 INT, 2 FF, 1 TD), and John Jennings (5 tackles), and true freshman Akeem Byrum (8 tackles).

Junior kicker Shannon Quinn (5-5 FG, 15-15 XP) hasn’t missed a kick yet in his first season out of junior college. Toledo’s punter is also a junior college product in senior Cedric Hart (20 punts, 886 yards, 43.3 avg., 9 inside 20), who is in his third year as the primary option. Ford (7 kick returns, 128 yards; 11 punt returns, 92 yards) and redshirt junior runningback Cameron Mobley (4 kick returns, 84 yards; 1 punt return, 5 yards) will return kicks for the Rockets.

I could see the Tartans coming away with a win this week, huge boost getting back one of the anchors of the defense in Crosby, plus a Crosby always does well in Pittsburgh! Pretty funny to see that the one MAC team to make some national noise in Toledo is also the one team that is seeing some NCAA sanctions, haha, has to be some really funny business going on over there! As good as Toledo was, I think the Tartans take this one, especially with the home field advantage, as I think your playmakers steal the day. (Love your little news blurbs as well, really awesome stuff as always.)

Hahah if I could get Aaron to play at the same level as Sydney, it'd take the CMU defense to new heights! Bringing him back is a big get, his backup Chris Hill is fine but doesn't quite have the same playmaking ability Crosby brings to the table. It's really funny that Toledo got popped for NCAA sanctions after its undefeated year, they should still be solid these next couple years but it's likely they become a bottom-feeder here around 2012-13 because of the restrictions. I'm feeling pretty confident in this matchup though, probably will let Toth spy Cadet so he doesn't take off running, and their running game isn't as near as dangerous with Collins graduated.

Appreciate the kudos on the news blurbs, I always loved how Deegeezy did that in his reports and wanted to incorporate a similar style in mine! I love how you also do the blurbs about the nation at large, and want to do the same at some point here. I also plan on adding some more media outlets in the future with a CMU-specific SB Nation site (since we're getting to that point of the report's timeline where SBN is becoming a thing) and the student newspaper to try and add more layers to this.
