Will the new game be a big seller?

Just a quick question for the board... do you think this game will sell and make a large profit for EA if it is released with fictional players and without the ability to download rosters?

I think it will be a huge seller no matter what because of the absence of the game for 7 years and the fact that fans of college football are more interested in teams and traditions than the individual players. Plus, most of the real players are gone in a couple of years anyway in dynasty mode. Of course, it all depends on the quality of the gameplay and the depth of the dynasty mode.

    Thoughts?

    Yes.

For every 100 people that say they will not buy it because of generic rosters, at least 99 of them will buy it.

Relative to other sports titles, no, I don't think it will. NCAA was a 500k-1m unit franchise.

I expect they'll produce a title with similar targets in mind with hope to grow it from there.

I would expect the first release to outsell typical expectations based on no longer having the "I bought it last year so I'll sit this year out" crowd. Future years won't benefit from that.

But this is EA. They'll figure out a way to tack on additional revenue streams (remember NCAA 14?), so financial success won't be measured just on copies sold.

Iโ€™m buying the new version as I donโ€™t have a system that plays the old versions anymore. It would have to be awful. Iโ€™m willing to overlook quite a bit because.... nostalgia. I hope itโ€™s half as good as I hope it to be.

Iโ€™ll never understand the ride or die with real rosters for college football. Rosters change so much, so quick. Just give me a solid roster and recruits if we cannot edit them.

Year 1 will have bigger sales, but I expect longterm it'll be like it used to be where it never touched the sales of other major sports titles like Madden or 2k.

It'll be profitable, but I doubt in the decade between releases the CFB video game fanbase has grown anymore than the overall sports gamer crowd. Whatever Madden sales now compared to what it did in 2013 is the kind of bump I suspect CFB gets after the year 1 boost disappears.

I think it will sell big its first year simply for the novelty of having a college football game again. Hell ... a college sports video game of any kind again. It's been a long time.

Year 2, on the other hand, is what will determine the future of the franchise. If there is a sharp drop off in it's second iteration, that will be a big red flag on whether EA will stick with it.

College football is one of the most popular sports in America; and people have been missing. I believe it's going to be a top seller IMO.

I'll buy a college hoops game.

Can't say I care all that much about CFB right now. Half baked Playoff. Only two conferences matter. The NCAA is deplorable and should have died a decade ago.

I think you are not accounting for the drop in popularity of the NFL due to their political issues and the fact that people really are tired of Madden overall....

It's going to be a very high seller and people will be surprised (not I though)

I expect it will be the best selling release of the franchise, but relative to other titles it will be similar to how things were in the past.

I have no doubt people will use it to push whatever political points they want to make against the NFL / Madden.

Well I know personally I have a lot of friends who no longer watch the NFL and focus primarily on the college game so that, combined with the fact people are by now fairly tired of Madden (and yet still buy it because of no other option) means this game will outperform past college football games.

                          Even in year 2.

                            Huge seller? No. Profitable? Yes.

Real rosters is a contributing factor for buying the game every year. With fictitious rosters with the inability to share edited rosters will reduce the enthusiasm of fans. I think a lot of fans will only buy the game when their favorite team has new uniforms or a game enhancement creates a buzz (video or real).

In year 1 I would expect it to sell a great many versions. Less people will buy it in year 2 unless the initial version didn't meet expectations so it will be a real upgrade. When the playoffs expand to 8 the game will be a great seller because of the significant change in the college football world.

In 8 seasons there have been a few significant changes:
                            1. 4 team playoff
                            2. Targeting with suspensions for a half
                            3. Transfer portal
                            4. Concussion protocol

But EA has lagged for some changes. I get called at least once per game for clipping. Clipping hasn't been much of an issue for over a decade because it is now a block in the back rather than a clip (10 yard penalty instead of 15).

I think most fans will buy the new game every two or three years UNLESS they like to play online.

I think many people are overestimating the impact of not having roster sharing (probably because of the demographic of this site).

NCAA games sold well for years without Roster Share.
