I had strat on the disks, then the 1st cd back in 1998.. Had the world series winners disks then the All star disks. In fact still do but havent messed with strat in 20 years. Thinking of getting back into it, but wonder if I can use those disks (I have a disk player) with this new strat? Also can you buy seasons lets say 1940 or 1971 or 2004,? If so how much a season?Comment

You may have to contact their customer service to see if you can use the old discs. They may be able to help you with installation of the older version of the game. Otherwise you are probably looking at having to buy the latest version of the PC game, then buy any older season rosters individually. They have seasons going all the way back to 1871. The cost of each season generally depends on how many teams were in the set. Also, some seasons are cheaper, since some seasons are so old they don't have complete stats. That isn't Strat's fault, that's because 100 years ago the data wasn't as extensive as it is now. If you are talking about a season where real boxscores and other stats still exist, Strat has more extensive data to work with, and better quality sets are produced.Comment

Hopefully a strat expert will chime in here with detailed info and while it's not overly complicated it is "different". You need to purchase the latest yr then you can add older seasons as well. Plus there are addons you may want to purchase to the game more enjoyable. The game doesn't come with player photos etc. but you can dl them from different sites.

I have some old season disks from the 90s and was recently told by Strat that they are no longer supported so I'd have to buy the seasons again if I want to play them.
I have last year's version of the game and own 2015-2019 seasons. I'll eventually replay all 5 seasons with the Astros.
I've completed 2015 and 2016 already and I'm currently at May 1st of 2017. In 15 the Astros won 1 or 2 games more than real life but missed the playoffs. Toronto eventually swept Washington in the World Series.
In 16 the Astros shockingly won 99 games behind AL MVP Jose Altuve and Dallas Keuchel who was 20-5 which was far better than he really was. Houston was swept by Cleveland in the ALCS and the Indians lost the World Series in 7 to Washington.
In the first month of 17, Keuchel is 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA and Springer is the early AL MVP frontrunner hitting .342 with 14 HR and 26 RBI. Houston is 15-10.
What I recommend to people who want to get into SOM PC is to wait for sales. Either that or buy the game and one season, play it and wait for a sale to buy more seasons. When they have a sale, I'll probably buy the latest version of the game (so I can play the 2020 season) and then buy a handful of past seasons to keep me busy until the next sale.
As it is, I have the rest of 2017 and 18 and 19 to get me through to the next sale. I have so many other games that I'm playing that I'll probably still be in 17 or 18 when the next sale happens so I should be good.

To speak directly to your question about installing the game, it is easy. The only part that is a little unusual is that the games or seasons you buy have key codes to unlock them and the key codes are stored in your account on the SOM website.
However, if you ever need to move your game to a different computer you will GREATLY appreciate this feature. I bought a new laptop late last Summer and the directions on the website did a pretty good job of walking me through disabling my games and seasons on the old laptop and moving them to the new one (including using a flash drive to move data from seasons I had already completed or were in progress to the new machine).
Having SOM store your key codes means you will never lose them and it really is the best way.
Things do get tricky (for us old guys) when you want to add player photos and team and league logos though. With some perseverance you can do it though and it makes a huge difference in eye appeal.

Aside from that, it is a little unnerving for me to set up a new season or playoff. There are so many options that I find myself taking a long time to get everything right so that my leagues run the way I want them to.
The good news is that it is simple to re-start a league or delete it if you find it that you didn't have the right settings. If you accidentally delete a purchased item - no problem. The code is stored on the website.
If you ever decide to take the plunge, feel free to post in this thread if you need any help, a walkthrough or detailed assistance. I'm no expert but I can probably offer some sound advice and help you avoid a few pitfalls.
I would suggest, as well, that you seek out some YouTube videos of the cards and dice version of the game being played - particularly tutorials (PC tutorials would be good as well). I think it would be important to understand how the game's mechanics work to fully appreciate the automation of the PC version.
If you decide to buy the game, I highly recommend getting the "with card image" versions as it helps you see, graphically, where the game's engine is getting the play results from.
I also would recommend buying the add-on for Hi-Res Ballpark images. This puts the stadiums on your screen as you are playing. You can technically do this yourself but it would be a hassle. This item is a one-time purchase that automatically updates if you buy future versions of the game. There is also an Old Time Stadiums add-on that you can buy, if you play with old seasons.

Strat O Matic is an amazing game engine, the best. Playing cards and dice is my preferred method. I play full rules, super-advanced, so playing out an entire season for all of MLB is not realistic, so I do utilize the CPU version.
The CPU version is based on Windows 95 technology. It is so disappointing. it looks bad and operates clunky. There is a fair amount of customization possible, but it is not easy and you really have to align screen/image resolutions and such. User interface is terrible. I get frustrated every year they dont improve.Comment
