Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
I like the AAC and think it has a lot of potential but there going to have to find a replacement for UConn. I wonder if West Virginia would be interested since they have been a disaster in the Big 12 and if that doesn't work try to get Rutgers who people in the Big 10 would love to see gone.

What are you talking about WVU being a disaster in the Big 12? lmao they are one of the programs that are good in both football and basketball -
Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
I am not agreeing with him, but it is easy to see why he calls them a disaster. Compared to what they did pre-Big 12, they have not lived up to expectations.
They have had one double digit winning season since joining nine years ago. They have had two 8 win seasons next to that. Their final nine seasons in the Big East saw four double digit winning seasons, and never less than 8 wins.
Arguably better competition is the answer as to why they have not had such success in the Big 12, but nonetheless, they have not lived up to expectations.

Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
They have been about as good in basketball in the Big 12 as they were in the Big East but I was talking about football. From 2003 - 2011 they won six Big East Champions and won three BCS Bowl games two of which were blowouts. They have not been close to that good since then.
Maybe I am just a stubborn old man but I miss the the old days when West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Syracuse, and Boston College played one another every year. I often wondered what would have happened to the football landscape if Joe Paterno would have gotten his Eastern Conference off the ground.Comment

Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
No one from a p5 would ever consider going to the AAC. And I think with Rutgers they served their purpose of bringing the NY market. They don't make sports better but financially they make sense.I like the AAC and think it has a lot of potential but there going to have to find a replacement for UConn. Nothing the AAC can really do but just continue to sell their programs, keep the football success they have had going, and pray that playoff expansion happens and includes a path for the non p5 schools. There's not really an actual move to be made that is going to change their situation of being the best g5 conference but never going to be considered a p5. They are what they are at this point imoOriginally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

They would if said P5 conference completely dissolves. Sounds like the American might become that 5th P5.No one from a p5 would ever consider going to the AAC. Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
Honestly, I doubt the American becomes a P5. Given all the reports about other conferences not wanting to expand, I think it's far more likely that the Big XII poaches some talent from the American and the Mountain West to build themselves back up.
Personally, I like the idea of adding Boise State, Cincinnati, Memphis and SMU to the Big XII. I think those 4 would make up for the prestige hit from losing OU and Texas and would also give them at least 1 playoff contender (Cincinnati) to replace the 1 they lost (OU).Comment

Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
Looking more official for BYU, Cincy, Central Florida and Houston. Leaves the American with 8. I'd assume they'd go back up to at least 10, not sure the options are worthy of getting back up to 12. CUSA generally seems like the next conference to raid, it's what they did before, but there are very few decent CUSA options. I'd consider Marshall, UAB and maybe UTSA or Florida Atlantic and probably no one else. Army causes some issues-you'd have to maybe consider Army-Navy not to count as a conference game since they want to keep that game after the conference championship game. Liberty? A few of the good Sun Belt schools-App State, Coastal and Louisiana if you want to go just on the basis of quality of football right now.Comment

Re: Mike Aresco Declares American Conference is at a Crossroads
I'm in Columbia Missouri. Missouri threw away 100 years of tradition and moved to the SEC for money.
That's why West Virginia moved to the Big 12. Everybody knew they would be in a more competitive conference. Cincinnati, BYU, Houston and Central Florida are moving to the Big 12 for the money and will face tougher competition. School that could benefit the most IMO is Central Florida. They will have cash to upgrade facilities and are in a great recruiting area.
For Missouri the move has been fantastic for the administrators who have a lot of money to spend but the fans aren't showing up for football or basketball. The focus has been on appealing to millionaires by building luxury suites and the have lost the blue collar fans.≡Comment
