We are all fans of sports games but there is a game which for me really worths a thread to explain how special it is. That game is...
Let me try to explain why the GTCW is unique.
First lets be clear, it is a wargame. Do not let the "real time strategy" mention falls you. This is a pure wargame, nothing at all like Warcraft or its kind.
To anyone who like Wargame you may play:
- Very good games playing the strategic side such as Ageod serie which has an excellent Civil war version (Civil War II).
- Very good games playing the tactical side. Ultimate General serie or Scourge of War for instance.
However, only a handful of games attempted to bring both, which normally is what you look for. I mean what is the point of great tactical battles if you never see the benefits of these battles at strategic level. Same for the AGEOD like. The level of details of their maps and order of battle are fantastic but it is so frustrating to build armies and never see them in action.
To be fair I played the very first Civil War in 1995 edited by Empire, and from that first attempt to the matrix games (such as Crown of War) and passing by Forge of Freedom. None of them has really made it up to my expectation.
Best Civil War wargame ? no doubts for me
I must say I have always been very interested (to say the least) with military history in general and two period more specifically: Civil War and, of course as a french, Napoleonic period.
I made reenactment of Napolonic battles for more than 15 years in am imperial guard cavalry group, so I am (really) looking for immersion, historical accuracy and details.
And i must say after like 40 hours of gamplay that ATCW actually is delivering up to my expectations.

GTCW a short and basic gameplay presentation
I never wrote an article on a video game but let me try to improvise.
At the start you select your game mode (you can play a campaign or a bunch of historical battles). I am not really interested in playing standalone battles so i go straight to the campaign.
Here you can pick multiple scenarios, with different start dates in the war. Once you pick your side, GTCW puts you in charge of the destiny of the Union or the Confederacy.
It progresses in real time but you can stop and pause any time to give order or analyse the situation.
Every aspects of the civil war you could think of is managed. Here is a list but not looking to be exhaustive.
- The game focuses on the military aspects and give you a lot of details and total freedom in the way you organise your armies and fleets.
- Armies structure are whatever you decide them to be. You can hire/promote/sack officers, you can create new armies/recruiit new units, define simple of more complex chains of command etc
- You manage forts and garrisons.
- You manage supply chain and you can enhance the weapons used by your troops
- You have a very detailed fleet management and of course blockade is a big part of the game
- You can give all orders to your troops and fleets.
So you manage all the strategic aspects and the details are really there believe me, but then the great thing is... when two armis meet you can jump on the battlefield and then again it is a very detailed wargame.
What I really liked is the kind of reports you receive. Extermely immerssive.

GTCW surprising political and economic gameplay
But not only you need to manage a war you have as well to maintain the economy. I must say the way it is handled in GTCW is really unique and in fact authentically realistic.
As political authority of either the Confederacy or Union you can basically do two type of things:
- Promote a set acts or policies which in fact define the legal framework of your country. Each one having pros and cons.
- and, you are in charge of the fiscal policy with a cautious attention to your public debt credit rating...
And that is all. If you think about it, this is exactly what rulling a country is. I mean in term of actions. The game gives you plenty of reports on the economy in order for you to figure out the potential impacts of your decisions.
I must say this is really brillant. Because it helps to understand what rulling is. The government is not in charge of defining how many boxes a factory should make, or how they should set the factory. But the government promotes laws and tax policies to develop business according to the priorities of the nation (well in theory it should).
But let me share this because this diagram just shows how the different goods (on which you get detailed activity reports) are transformed to build your economy and your war supporting effort.
I never saw a better game mechanic immersive, realistic, deeply detailed and consistent.

I may do a few more post on my game just to give a better idea on how great this game is.
I just wanted to share a but about this game which is really a big success.
Congratulation to its developpers and creators.

I gravitate towards these types of games, be it a war game or grand strategy (hello EU4 and Vic2), so this game has been on my radar for awhile. I havent clicked that buy button though but just reading this has me really tempted. Thanks for the write up!
