Stealing bases
It seems almost impossible to steal. I have a guy with 85 spd and 70 stl. I gage the pitchers motion to see if it's worth going. The catcher can have low arm strength and still throws me out by a mile. And thats with taking an extra lead too. Any help?Tags: None -
Re: Stealing bases
Click L2 for the runner you want to steal. Then as the pitcher comes set hold L1. While holding L1 keep your eyes on the pitcher and as soon as he makes his move towards the plate release L1.Purple people eaters -

I have tried that and it doesn't seem to work as it should. I dont see my runner move as soon as i release the button.Comment

Re: Stealing bases
Work on your timing. Because this is exactly how it’s supposed to be done. Also get a good lead, that extra foot helps a ton. I have 10 SB and I play with the Jays(not a running team)

Re: Stealing bases
What is the speed rating of the players you are trying to steal with? I would not try with guys under 75. Also I try to pick certain counts to go on. 2-0 , 2-1, 3-1. if you try too early in the count they will slide step or pitch out. Obviously you want to steal on an offspeed pitch too.Purple people eatersComment

Re: Stealing bases
All you have to do is hit L2+the analog stick direction for the base they are on before the pitcher starts his delivery. Pre-load it.
There is no need to hold L1 or hit L1 or anything like that. There is also no need to increase your lead.
Player ratings matter a lot here.
What matters most is running in the right counts. That's where success comes in. Never run on 0-0, 0-1, 0-2, or 1-2 as these are good counts for the pitcher to pitch out.
I have never used anything other than the above and honestly, my SB totals have been first in the entire league in my last 3 seasons in 20, 19, and 18. So far this season, I am tops again just over a month in.
I should note that my stealing and baserunning sliders are at default. If these are adjusted, it is also a common cause.Funkycorm

Re: Stealing bases
Yea I’ve never used L1(holding it I mean) either, just L2 pre- pitch. Taking that extra step with L1 is not needed but it can help. Best time to steal is on breaking balls and not when they slide step.Comment

Re: Stealing bases
Pre-load steal with L2. Taking an extra lead step by pressing tapping L1 is not necessary and leads to WAAAY too many throws over and pick offs. Holding L1 and releasing it when the pitcher makes his move home makes a huge difference in the jump. I just recently discovered this technique and it works great. You should definitely try it out.San Diego Padres ~ Las Vegas Raiders ~ Los Angeles Kings ~ Manchester United

Re: Stealing bases
I don’t do anything but click L2 and press the analog in the direction of who I want to steal. I have seen others say press L1 while timing the pitchers release, but you really don’t have to do that. I simply click L2. You will feel the controller vibrate, then let the player do is thing. I can pretty much steal a base with anyone with a speed above 60. I have about a 85% success rate using this method.
Caveat: I do manually slide away from the angle the fielder is receiving the ball from using the right analog. This is a read and react situation so this could be influencing my success rateComment

Yeah I did forget to add manual sliding and sliding away as well. Helps a ton.I don’t do anything but click L2 and press the analog in the direction of who I want to steal. Re: Stealing bases
Holding L1 and releasing on pitchers movement absolutely works...

Re: Stealing bases
I dont get that.
You hit L2 and release.
After that you hit L1 (the Leadoff button) and hold it.
When the pitcher starts his motion you release L1 ?
Could it be a placebo effect ? What happens in this situation if you just dont release L1?Comment

Re: Stealing bases
You also have to judge your attempt on the pitches being thrown, the count, and the catcher’s arm strength and reaction.
Trying to run on a pitcher who just threw a fastball into a catcher who’s reaction is 80 or above with a high arm strength is near impossible in The Show (been playing The Show since I can remember).
IMO, the steal rating is more important than speed, even though speed plays a HUGE factor. Trying to steal with a player who’s steal rating is under 70 is rough. They won’t have a good enough jump on the steal that you make you feel comfortable not being thrown out.
Go into custom practice and try working the count. Leading off without stealing to make the pitcher to throw a pitch out, and a fastball. Go on breaking balls. One of the things I do before every series is look at the opposing team. Look at their catcher stats to see if it’s worth running on the catcher.
Practice practice practice.Comment

I would never run on Molina years ago.
I remember once I stole like eight bases against a knuckleballer lol. I forget what year and who it was.Comment

Re: Stealing bases
Base-stealing: you do not need to take a lead. There are two general approaches I use.
Approach 1: the standard steal attempt. Hold down L2 and release just as the pitcher makes his first move towards the mound. Time it well and you'll get a good jump. Be ready to hit R1 though if he throws over to the base.
Approach 2: the 'all out' steal attempt. Tap L2 and the press AND hold onto L1. The runner will automatically run all-out to steal the base at the pitcher's first move. There's a risk, if you guess wrong and he throws to the bag, you will usually get picked-off.
(Note: a third approach is to merely tap L2. The runner will take off (mainly based on ratings). But it will be a slower jump and IMO, will be more likely to get the runner thrown out by the catcher)
Either way, you have to steal in favorable situations when expecting an off-speed pitch or a pitch out of the zone. Also closely look at the catcher's ratings and see how good he is.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment
