    Are RBs worth the money

In my franchise I need to decide if Dalvin Cook is worth re-signing. He is gaining 100+ yards/game but whenever my backup comes in, the numbers don’t seem to drop off. So what I’m asking you guys is: Are highly-rated backs worth spending money on? Or is it smarter to invest in upgrading other positions and use lower-rated backs?

I’d say it really depends. I play as the Eagles and Miles Sanders was tearing it up. He got hurt for 6 weeks and I was left with Jordan Howard, Holyfield and I signed a low rated FA. The drop off was huge. Maybe your backup is better but has he had to play extended time or just as a sub type player getting a few carries a game? Realistically if there isn’t much drop off then I’d say let him walk and go with the other guy.

I'll spend on a guy that is an excellent route runner and has blazing speed. It's hard to replace the speed of a guy like Mostert. But it's not something that's necessary to have success on the ground.

However, if you have a guy that dominates linebackers in coverage, that's something worth keeping.

^^ Also all things related to acceleration. I need my guys to hit top speed fast, and to not lose a lot when changing direction.

So basically, I'll spend big on a very fast, quick guy who can get open, because it's perfect for the scheme I run. Otherwise, not so much.

Thank you guys for the input. I don’t have a big enough sample size to make the call yet. I’m only 3 weeks into the season so my backup has only had a small handful of carries. The problem is I need to decide on Cook’s extension now or risk losing him to free agency. I guess I’m just gonna have to roll the dice

Trade him! If you're gonna let him go, try to get some draft compensation (unless the dead money is going to hurt you long term).

Definitely trade Cook. RBs do not have the value on the field to justify the salary cap hit. As noted above - find a RB with good catching and short route running; speed is a top attribute.

I've always been a running back by committee type of guy so I choose not to spend big money on the RB position.

I always tag and then trade RB’s after their deal expires. That way I get draft compensation for it.

If you're playing Madden on PS4 / XBOX One, you probably should replace Cook with someone who is faster and adds more obvious value in the passing game. Since players reach top speed incredibly quickly on that console, small differences in speed matter tremendously. If you are in a franchise where you area allowed to edit ability assignments, Cook can be worth keeping if you use abilities to increase his ability in the pass game.

On PS5 / XBOX Series X, the way players move has changed significantly. Top-end speed matters less and small-area player movement matters a lot more. Dalvin Cook is absolutely elite with respect to short-area burst (I don't even have very good stick skills and he jukes people easily in space), so I'd argue he's plenty worth extending on those consoles, especially if you find ways to incorporate him into the passing game.

Generally speaking, probably don't extend a running back with a big-money deal if he can't contribute in all phases of the offense.

Not in Madden and pretty much not in the real NFL.

Speed has always been the top thing in this game, I could have a 100 yard rusher with 95 plus speed who is low rating but because of his speed i was able to rack up yards and points.

Some rbs in the game though I know just seem to always be good no matter (Barkley for example)

I'd take a slower rb for one who gets to top speed faster.

(I've played the PS5 version, so it may be different for the previous gen)

if they end up being 90+ overall before their rookie contract is done then i'd say maybe depending on what the rest of your team looks like at the time.

but otherwise no as you can find decent ones in free agency/draft and they'll get the job done.

I assume you're playing an offline franchise but for online next gen the meta seems to be hit sticking the crap out of everything. In that case I'd trade a good amount of speed for better carrying stats.
Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.
