Good post. Keep them going as it sounds like they don't do anything unless there are a lot of people asking for it.

That reply from the community manager is exactly everything that is going wrong with supposed “simulation” sports games today.

Most people don’t want realism. Either we soon realize that or we will all go bat **** crazy fretting over this.

Madden 16 was the last time we had penalties right.

So this is nothing new. But Madden 22 has vaporized them on the so called “simulation” mode and made the sliders useless which is insulting.

Let’s hope we can at least get them tuned or at the very least make the sliders work again....I at least was able to trigger penalties (not a crazy amount but better than what we have on Madden 22) on Madden 21 PS5 with the sliders maxed out.

A huge huge insult to Simulation minded players. And disappointing considering how much Franchise Mode love we got.

I am going to play and enjoy the hell out of this game regardless....I won’t harp on this any longer. I think we are all trying to find ways to fix it....but we cannot. It is hard coded. Only EA Tiburon can alleviate this issue if they choose to do so.

So let’s stay civil with them and work them with a lot of honey folks. Vinegar never catches flies.

      Ever.

Last year the NFL Average was 5.56 penalties per game, a significant decline from 2018 where it was almost 8 a game. I've seen one defensive offsides and 1 false start in 5 games.

If you design philosophy is penalties don't matter then remove the sliders as they do nothing and you're just putting a placebo in front of the user. This is my biggest problem don't say one thing and then do another.

That 5.56 average is per team, per game, so the full average should 11 penalties per game!

With the classic roster I am working on, which edits all lineman and DBs and many other players to undisciplined, and adjusted sliders, I was able to get 7 penalties in a game. Still not enough for sure! Most of those were also false starts.

Pretty sad and the response was terrible.

This is why I can't get upset when fans bash EA.

Instead of giving us the option to turn penalties on or off ourselves he responded with some nonsense.

So essentially we have NG game that has no ref's, no weather effects and basically no penalties but guess what it's all good they are looking to improve those things in the future

I'm sure there are other sports games out there that we play where the online crowd probably hates penalties but guess what those games still give the user the choice......

I would have thought that with the new HFA's in the game that they would at least trigger penalties like false start on the away team's offenses. Hopefully they tune the sliders to at least work better than they do now? Anybody tried the sliders in reverse? Maybe they are backwards...just spit ballin.

I’ve played 3 full games so far and now that i have seen this thread I haven’t seen a single penalty. I haven’t messed with any sliders but yeah not a single one.

I usually get holding penalties if i set my oline to aggressive in the past. Guess i could try that lol

                  Re: Penalties?? Anyone?

That EA response is the problem with Madden for the last decade. The MUT community has been catered to so heavily that the devs think what they want in the game is what everyone wants in the game.

They split the game into Arcade/Competitive/Simulation yet they only care about the competitive style.

The notion that Madden players don't want a "realistic" football game because that would take away from "user skill" is insane. That's such a small amount of people compared to the rest that want a realistic game with sliders and OPTIONS to create an arcade or competitive game after the fact.

You make a real game first and give us the tools to make it into NFL Street.
You can't do the opposite. I cannot make this game realistic.

But anyway, back to the question in the thread: No I do not see much penalties at all. The slider barely works outside of roughing the passer. When you attach penalties to user functions instead of ratings & traits then you get penalties like offsides & false start to only occur when the user tries to fake snap the ball. Every other penalty goes back to that EA reps answer. So the slider is pretty much useless for most of the penalties on the list.

                    Re: Penalties?? Anyone?

I'm pretty sure I've had one penalty in 5-6 franchise games (random teams). It was a roughing the passer on me. My rusher took two steps after the pass was thrown and basically body slammed the QB, so it was kind of cool.

Holding calls are needed to help slow down the offense. If you can just average 4 yards a play you keep moving the chains and eventual score points, you need the penalties to force you behind the chains. Hopefully it gets adjusted - I don't need 11 a game on average, but around 8 would be nice if playing 10-12 minute quarters.

                      Re: Penalties?? Anyone?

'Simulation' is essentially the default play style. We know franchise is the most played mode, by a lot and we know that 80% (from EA's numbers) of games are vs the CPU.

What this means is that the largest part of the fanbase are probably playing on simulation - which is going to encompass the largest segment of the game's population. That population: people that buy the game, play a season or two in CFM and never bother going online anywhere to talk about the game. That "silent majority" is what keeps the game a big seller and if you're reading/posting on this site (or on Twitter or other outlets), you are part of a signficant minority.

Here's the thing, it's not truly a "simulation" style, I consider it to be more akin to "Madden classic". People here have a far different interpretation of what the term "simulation" means than the more general audience. This is the general dis-connect when it comes to topics like penalties. People here expect "simulation" to mean "true to life" in nearly every aspect (and for people still clinging to that concept, I feel sorry for you). To EA, it's clear that they consider (and historically have considered) "simulation" to mean more of a "our typical Madden experience". To THEM it IS "simulation" based on how they are defining it (which appears to be based upon the concept of ratings interactions and so on - and is not a statement as to whether or not it is authentic in every facet).

What the dev said (while I too disagree with the sentiment) is probably reasonably accurate for a large percentage of that silent majority that is the target of EA's "simulation style" (i.e. the bulk of people playing franchise).

What I would like to see is:

                      1. 'Quicker fix' - make penalty sliders more effective in tuning frequencies (which may or may not help)
                      2. 'Longer-term fix' - change name of simulation mode to 'Madden classic' and add a 4th game style that is more authentic.

As an aside, I do not consider the H2H communities to be at fault here and don't think anyone else should directly or implicitly blame them. They have their own mode(s) and have little skin in this game. This is really on EA for the reasons I listed above.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

                        Re: Penalties?? Anyone?

It really doesn't feel much different to me vs M21 NG with maxed penalty sliders. (except for RTP)

Maybe one game I had 0 then the last few games 4-6, which is the same as M21.

Like some have said, why have penalty sliders if they really don't do anything? The whole point of sliders is to tune the game the way you want.

Well said. I’d love to get a detailed explanation from Clint or even that O’Grady dude on what simulation means to EA.

The one thing I’d change in your suggestion is to just make arcade mode into what you’re referring to as “Madden Classic”
I’m not sure anyone even uses that mode anyway. If they are so concerned about what the general Madden public may think, just make the default setting arcade. Simulation and comp would be the only ones that would know the difference and could easily adjust accordingly.

So then you remove them from everything but ‘simulation’ mode.
