Re: The Career of J.D. Clark (NCAA 14)
Quick update on where we stand this season, and a recruiting update. I want some honest feedback on the way "The Board" looks. Too much? I like that I can track who gained or declined at certain ratings with it but it does take up a lot of the screen. If that is an issue I could just redo the spreadsheet and make it smaller.
We've won the last two national championships in 2020/2021 and are starting to show a run of form in 2022 as well.

2022 - Week 10 Preview
Iowa host Fighting Illini in Week 10
Iowa seeks their fifth win in a row after a 20-27 loss to Auburn on the road in week 4. That loss isn't serving them in any way as the Tigers have fallen out of the rankings and therefore any title contention.
Illinois comes in after breaking a three-week losing streak and will be looking to stun Iowa at home. The teams are quite evenly matched overall in terms of talent, but Illinois has the more notable weaknesses such as some key areas of attack on their defensive line, and have a couple of players out to boot.
Coach Clark hopes there is no drop-off in form as the team's practices were limited this week with some players dealing with illness and Clark himself having missed a couple of practices due to personal matters.
Recruiting Notes: Fullback Dwight Rhinehart (#19 FB, IA) and wide receiver Jarvis Melbert (#30 WR, LA) will be visiting this week. Melbert's signing looks like a formality at this point, but Clark badly wants to beat out Minnesota coach Jimmy Lake for the services of Rhinehart, an in-state recruit with good talent.
Vessel back after a week out with ankle sprain
Freshman wide receiver Nick Vessel, who leads the team in receptions and has made big plays running the ball as well as returning punts, is back in action this week. With Halligan out long term, Vessel should give the team's passing game a lift this week.Last edited by Hellisan; 01-06-2022, 01:59 PM.Comment

Re: The Career of J.D. Clark (NCAA 14)
I still like how The Board looks - it's full of detail and doesn't take up too much, IMO.
Hopefully Goodman can carry the load on the ground, because Illinois looks susceptible towards the run. Howard looks terrific at QB for them, though based on his stats he doesn't seem like a dual-threat. Secondary will have to be up to the test!Comment

Hawk Blog Update
Iowa land a pair of recruits following Week 10 victory
"Coach Clark has landed a pair of notable recruits. Jarvis Melbert is one that pundits are high on. The #181 ranked player overall and the #30 wide receiver, Melbert has very good speed as well as a foundation of solid hands and route running.
Additionally, Iowa landed fullback Dwight Rhinehart, the #19 fullback out of Centerville, Iowa who had harrowed his choices down to Floyd of Rosedale contestants Minnesota and Iowa.
Iowa have reportedly secured commitments from five players, including two that are ranked in the top 216 in the nation, all four-star recruits, and Rhinehart."
Clark raves about the performance of Chia
The stat line of Khayman Chia was not expansive as he hauled down one opposing player, that being Jordan Howard for a sack. As is often the case, Chia's influence on the game was much greater than the sum of his stat line.
"Constant pressure, and increasing pressure the further the game goes on. That's his calling card," said Clark. "We don't win this game without him because he forced third down incompletions, throw always, plays of that nature that were absolutely key to this win. One of my players of the game for sure."
Halloway could be on pace for a monster season
"If Junior cornerback D.J. Halloway had his career end today, he would be a player of note in the annals of Iowa Football. He has won two national championships, was instrumental in each, and has the talent to back up his on-field achievements.
However, after an impressive freshman season that saw him score a pair of defensive touchdowns while picking off five passes and deflecting five others, Halloway intercepted just one pass as a sophomore and batted down just four.
This year Halloway is picking up the pace as the season progresses with four interceptions in the past four games including two against Minnesota. His four interceptions already easily top the one interception from las tyear. If he gets into a groove, he could author his best season yet.
Clark, as always, had something to say about Halloway.
"He's already a legend. I don't worry about him at all. To just go through his career and see how he has dominated in the clutch for us - I could talk for 20 minutes about his accomplishments but start with three interceptions to win us one national championship, the game-winning hail mary catch to win another, and three defensive touchdowns in his career already and nine on offense."
TE Polk to visit Arizona State Week 11 and LSU Week 12 before Iowa visit
Tight end Hayden Polk is one of the most hotly contested recruits in the nation, and for good reason. He's a freak that recalls players like Dallas Clark and George Kittle, the latter of which we're pretty sure doesn't technically exist in this universe due to roster shortages.
Digressing... It will be a couple of hairy weeks that determine whether or not Iowa will land what would be projected as their next truly great tight end. At 6'4", 244 out of Grapevine, TX, Polk has prototypical size to go along with wide receiver type speed as well as insane hands, route running, and open-field elusiveness. While not the blocker Kittle was, he's not horrible in that regard either, and would be projected to improve to "good" as a blocker.
Iowa now the heavy favorites to sign Willie Nelson
Linebacker Willie Nelson made his visit to NC State last week. Although recruiting services say that visit put the Wolfpack slightly ahead of Iowa, they are said to have just nudged ahead rather than influenced him seriously. That leaves Iowa as the only remaining team that's technically in the race for Nelson and has a visit. Nelson is a rangy, tall middle linebacker out of Deer Park, Texas with great acceleration, play recognition, and the ability to fight through traffic which is sort of a necessity to be recruited by Coach Clark.Last edited by Hellisan; 01-20-2022, 09:35 PM.Comment

2022 - Week 11 Preview
Purdue rides into town on a hot streak,
towing a potential QB controversy
Purdue have won three in a row, scoring a median 48 points per game in their last four games including a recent loss to Ohio State. Awkwardly, the offensive uptick has coincided with the strained shoulder of starting quarterback Nate Alexander. Freshman Pete Williams has proven himself reliable and efficient, throwing 8 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions. He's also a much better runner, with that ability to run having opened up the offense in recent weeks. Alexander looks like a decent runner at first glance, but if you take a flukey 71-yard run out of the equation he averages less than a yard a carry on his other 38 runs.
With Alexander questionable, will Purdue make the decision to start him or continue to ride the hot hand? That will play into how Coach J.D. Clark approaches this one, as statuesque quarterbacks are generally much easier to game plan for.
"We have had some extra prepration this week and honestly it has been a lot of hours," said Clark. "Even if they just had Pete as the backup we would have to prepare, but not knowing what they're going to do has added another layer for sure."
In addition to the offensive explosion, Purdue has taken better care of the football and done a better job of scoring points in the end zone this year overall, compared to Iowa's offense which can be sluggish, especially without the likes of a healthy Larry Lloyd. Can the Hawkeyes shut down the potentially explosive Purdue offense and pick up the win? Vegas sure thinks so, but this one looks like it could sneak up on us.
Recruiting Notes: Visiting this week:
DT Jeremiah Hanawalt, 3 stars, W. Des Moines, Iowa
DE Seth Bodensteiner, 3 stars, Decorah, Iowa
DE Kyle Williams, 4 stars, Weslaco, Texas
DT Jerry Adams, 4 stars, Rockland, Maine
LB Willie Nelson, 4 stars, Deer Park, Texas
LB Dez Dillon, 4 stars, Perry, Oklahoma
C Blake Mahoney, 2 stars, W. Des Moines, Iowa
The players to really look out for are Adams, Nelson, and Dillon. If Iowa can secure the commitment of these three players, the class is made. The Hawkeyes are reportedly looking to secure commitments from 16 players this year in total, but a much smaller class that includes these players would be preferred for obvious reasons. They are studs.

Hawk Blog Update and Iowa Recruit Signings
Clark Mum on QB situation moving forward
After Antwione Harkless led a comeback victory against Purdue, Clark was asked, as expected, if he would start Harkless moving forward. Clark would not admit at this time that Harkless will be the starter moving forward.
"At this point I'm not sure. I don't think that the performance by either QB was necessarily indicative of the type of player they are. Will Malone always struggle like that? Probably not. Will Harkless always play like that? Probably not. We just have to go back to practice this week and see who earns it. I'd say it's close."
Hawks land a trio of stellar defensive recruits
After Iowa came back to claim victory in four overtimes, scuttlebutt is that Iowa have landed their top three defensive targets remaining, which will bring some serious talent to the defensive side of the ball.
The big signing is Jerry Adams, the #44 recruit in the nation according to the ESPN 300 recruiting database. For a player to make it on the list from Maine is a big deal. Known as "Yung Bull" by his teammates and area football fans, Adams is a massive human being at 6'2, 327 lbs who can bench 465 and squat 595. Reportedly, he was the #1 recruit on the Iowa board right from the start. Bad news for opposing quarterbacks: His finess pass rush moves are reportedly as good as his devastating power moves. Iowa will most likely rely on Adams to gum up the middle of opposing offenses while occasionally wreaking havoc on the QB.
The team also is reportedly going to sign Top 100 linebacker Dez Dillon out of Perry, Oklahoma and the #133 player, MLB Willie Nelson out of Deer Park, TX. Both players are projected as eventual starters, but Dillon will be hard to keep off the field immediately as he is known as a do-it-all linebacker with excellent height, size, and speed.

Re: The Career of J.D. Clark (NCAA 14)
Two very close wins on the bounce there my friend. That's also back-to-back games in which Malone has struggled, I feel like his leash may have gotten a little smaller after those two performances, even if Coach Clark wants to bat those questions away.Comment
