Around the NCAA – Week 6 Edition
There were upsets galore in Week 6 with #2 Florida, #10 Nebraska, and #24 West Virginia all falling

    ESPN The Magazine Cover Story
The Great Escape! – Hawaii keeps 29-game win streak alive with tough win.
No. 7 Hawaii ran its winning streak to 29 games in dramatic fashion, defeating Arizona State at home in overtime, 41-38. The Warriors held a 35-24 lead through three quarters before the Sun Devils tied it in the waning seconds of regulation, but following an ASU field to begin the extra frame, Matt Barkley won it with his fourth touchdown pass of the night. Barkley finished with 355 yards on 40-of-62 passing, while Jimmy Clausen compiled 351 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-46 pass attempts. Hawaii’s 29-game winning streak is the longest in NCAA Division I football since Miami (Fla.) won 34 consecutive games from 2000-02, but the Warriors face their toughest test yet next week – No. 4 USC in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

    Top Storylines
Syracuse moves to 6-0 with 44-21 upset win over rival #24 West Virginia
One of the season’s biggest surprises moved to 6-0 this weekend, as Syracuse defeated No. 24 West Virginia, 44-21, to take home the Schwartzwalder Trophy. The Orange jumped out to a 27-7 halftime lead and amassed 506 yards of total offense to the Mountaineers’ 225. Syracuse redshirt junior quarterback Vince McCray was stellar, throwing for 265 yards and three scores on 24-of-37 passing, and sophomore tailback Giovani Bernard scored three times (2 rushing, 1 receiving) on 220 yards from scrimmage (183 rushing, 37 receiving). The hosts essentially played keep-away offensively as WVU only ran 42 offensive plays, including just five carries for star junior runningback Trent Richardson.

Missouri takes down #10 Nebraska in overtime, 24-21
Dee Milliner’s overtime interception of Patrick Witt set the stage for Roger Patterson, and the Missouri kicker booted a 30-yard field goal to give his team a 24-21 upset win over No. 10 Nebraska. The Tigers held a 14-7 halftime advantage, but the Cornhuskers came back with a pair of touchdown runs by Aidan Howard to take a 21-14 lead. Missouri junior runningback Montee Ball ultimately sent the game to overtime with a seven-yard plunge with 6:02 left in regulation, then Milliner provided the game’s biggest play after Witt entered for an injured Dan Frazier. Tigers redshirt junior signal-caller Jordan Jefferson provided 165 yards and a touchdown passing, adding 91 yards and a score on the ground. Howard had 107 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries in defeat.

#12 LSU slows down #2 Florida, wins in Death Valley, 31-21
It was a tale of two halves in Death Valley, but No. 12 LSU’s flying start proved to be enough as it defeated No. 2 Florida, 31-21. Tigers redshirt junior quarterback Mike Glennon threw four touchdowns in the first half as his team went ahead 31-0, and that advantage held despite the Gators scoring 21 in the third quarter. Glennon tossed his four scores to redshirt senior Ian Harding (2), freshman Mike Evans, and sophomore Justin Hunter, and LSU also received 115 yards on 21 carries from junior tailback Lamar Miller. For Florida, Heisman favorite John Brantley had a day to forget, as he threw for just 199 yards and four interceptions.

I'd probably put it up there among the top three craziest games I've played in this report so far! #1 has to be the 2008 Duke game where a taunting call bailed me out and avoided an embarrassing loss to a winless team, and I think my Bowling Green game last year with the blocked extra point is there too. We definitely keep it interesting, that's for sure!

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Williams named MAC Offensive Player of the Week
For the second time this season, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eddie Williams was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Williams dominated in Carnegie Mellon’s 64-50 win at Bowling Green, finishing with 12 receptions for 222 yards and three touchdowns. The Altoona, Pa. native is up to 55 catches, 851 yards, and seven touchdowns receiving this season, adding 146 yards and a score on the ground also. His 55 receptions and 851 receiving yards both lead the nation, and he is up to 144 catches, 2,180 yards, and 25 total touchdowns (21 receiving, 4 rushing) for his career.

Wilson to keep starting job, Culver remains package-only QB
CMU head coach Jules Nottingham announced on Tuesday that he will continue to start junior quarterback Kevin Wilson, with sophomore Gerald Culver retaining his role as a change-of-pace option.

Wilson is coming off a 378-yard, four-touchdown performance at Bowling Green, though he also tossed a pair of pick sixes in the win. The junior has thrown for 1,355 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions this season. Culver (127.2 QB rtg., 12-22, 238 yards, 2 INT; 31 carries, 45 yards, 1 TD) struggles with his accuracy, but his mobility offers a different look and opens up the read-option game that Nottingham favors.

Frederick can’t wait for official visit
Top recruiting target Eric Frederick (Brownsville, La.) says he “can’t wait” to make his official visit to Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 5, and now lists the Tartans as the overwhelming favorites for his services.

“I love the connection I’ve made with the coaches so far,” said Frederick. “Their rise as a program is impressive, and they’re clearly on the upswing. Add that the school is elite academically, and it makes it an appealing destination.”

Frederick, a six-foot-two, 190-pound signal-caller from West Monroe High School, has also set official visits for his other two finalists – Texas on Nov. 12 and LSU on Nov. 26.

Pettit to visit Notre Dame this week
Carnegie Mellon recruiting target Eric Pettit (Fort McKinley, Ohio) is set to take an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend after setting his up with the Tartans last week.

“I’m really enjoying all aspects of my recruitment,” said Pettit. “All three schools (Carnegie Mellon, Notre Dame, Penn State) left on my list are recruiting me hard, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know more about their programs and the coaching staffs. (My recruitment) is still open, but I’d say Carnegie Mellon is the favorite right now.”

Pettit, a six-foot-two, 175-pound runningback from McKinley High School, has rushed for 3,003 yards and 28 touchdowns in his prep career.

Oxford, Ohio – Yager Stadium | FSN Pittsburgh

Top Storyline: Can Miami of Ohio take its shot?
Every media member is convinced that the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division is a two-horse race between Kent State and Carnegie Mellon, but there’s a feeling in Oxford that this Miami (Ohio) squad can crash the party. Offensively, redshirt senior Clay Belton (109.5 QB rtg., 102-189, 992 yards, 9 TD, 4 TD) is one of the league’s better quarterbacks and threw for 30 touchdowns a year ago. He’s flanked by a bevy of weapons, including runningback duo Quincy Landingham (63 carries, 317 yards, 2 TD) and T.J. Randolph (28 carries, 166 yards, 3 TD), and wide receiver trio Chris Givens (27 catches, 306 yards, 2 TD), Greg Hoyte (19 catches, 147 yards), and Willie Vincent (23 catches, 248 yards, 3 TD). The defense has its fair share of playmakers too, highlighted by senior defensive end Mike Walker (24 tackles, 3 sacks) and redshirt senior safety Anthony Kokal (17 tackles, 1 INT). Miami has fallen in back-to-back meetings against CMU, but this senior class started with a 27-3 win over the Tartans in 2008 and will be looking to do the same thing on Saturday.
Top Matchup: Carnegie Mellon Linebackers vs. Miami (Ohio) HBs Quincy Landingham and T.J. Randolph
Miami’s rushing attack is its biggest strength, led by the duo of fifth-year senior Quincy Landingham and redshirt junior T.J. Randolph. Landingham is a first-year starter and more of a shifty runner, while Randolph brings more oomph as a power back. The two get to run behind one of the MAC’s best offensive lines, with senior Scott Fountain, redshirt senior Kevin Koncelik, and redshirt junior Quentin Russell receiving all-conference accolades in the past. They’ll face their toughest test with Carnegie Mellon’s veteran linebackers, however. Mark Toth (38 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 TD) has been outstanding and is pushing for All-America recognition, while classmates Charlie Cohen (19 tackles, 3 sacks) and Chris Hill (29 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 1 TD) have done their jobs well on the outside.
Top Mismatch: Carnegie Mellon HB Lawrence McIntire vs. Miami (Ohio) Linebackers
Tartans sophomore runningback Lawrence McIntire (89 carries, 437 yards, 6 TD; 6 catches, 95 yards, 1 TD) has been red-hot as of late, wrestling the starting job away from senior Nate Satele (35 carries, 135 yards, 1 TD), and could be in for another big game on Saturday. Miami’s linebacker corps is led by the reliable third-year starter Edward Palmer, though he has missed most of the year due to injury and only has nine tackles thus far. There’s a drop-off flanking him however, with true freshman Kareem Henry (23 tackles, 1 sack) and redshirt senior Alex Kaufman (13 tackles, 1 INT) likely to start on the outside. Both have shown flashes this season, but are graded at 74.0 according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Prediction: Carnegie Mellon 38, Miami (Ohio) 34
Carnegie Mellon isn’t a perfect team by any stretch of the imagination, and this could be its toughest test yet in the MAC. However, it looks like the offense has come alive with McIntire’s emergence and junior quarterback Kevin Wilson (117.4 QB rtg., 97-190, 1,355 yards, 11 TD, 12 INT) showing more good than bad lately. If both continue to trend that way, the Tartans should win by two scores, but if not then they could be vulnerable against an opportunistic Redhawks side.

              Miami (Ohio) PFF Top Ten
              Kevin Koncelik, R-Sr., C (89)
              Scott Fountain, Sr., OT (88)

Turnovers Torch Three-Game Win Streak at Miami of Ohio

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

OXFORD, Ohio -- Carnegie Mellon saw its three-game winning streak come to an end thanks of a trio of turnovers, as Miami of Ohio knocked off the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division co-leaders, 55-38, this afternoon from Yager Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (3-4, 3-1 MAC) had no answer for Miami (3-3, 2-0 MAC) quarterback Clay Belton, who threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns on 22-of-31 passing. The Tartans still were able to match the Redhawks offensively, outgaining the hosts by a slight 497-495 margin, but two interceptions from Kevin Wilson – including his fifth pick six in three games – and a crucial redzone fumble by Lawrence McIntire provided too big of a hole for the visitors to climb out of.

“We’re not valuing the football,” said CMU head coach Jules Nottingham. “It’s impossible not to turn the ball over during a season, but the amount that we have committed over this season shows me that we aren’t valuing possessions the way that we should. I thought our offense did a good job outside of the turnovers, but those loom large especially when (Miami’s) offense is executing at the level they did today. We’ll learn from this and be better going forward.”

Miami’s offense was clicking from the jump, scoring on its opening two drives courtesy of a Quincy Landingham three-yard run and Belton four-yard connection to Chris Givens. The Tartans then lost Eddie Williams to an elbow injury on their third drive, but shifted gears and scored on back-to-back possessions with McIntire’s legs to make it 14-all after one.

The sophomore tailback appeared to be on the cusp of his third touchdown of the half early in the second quarter, only for Edward Palmer to force a fumble inside the five-yard line that was recovered by Kareem Henry. That kickstarted a 24-3 run to end the half, with Belton throwing three more touchdowns – including a 64-yard score to Givens with 34 seconds remaining in the frame – and a Calvin Russell 24-yard field goal.

Williams returned after the break and immediately made an impact, scoring on a 61-yard bomb from Wilson to make it 38-24 early in the third quarter. That feeling would be short-lived however, as the Redhawks answered three minutes later with Belton’s fifth touchdown toss – a 50-yard hookup with Greg Hoyte to push the score to 45-24.

CMU went back to McIntire, and he rewarded his team with touchdowns of 11 and five yards to make it a one-score game with 9:45 remaining. The Tartan defense then forced a three-and-out, capped with sacks by Matt Burnsides and Mark Toth, but just as the visitors were driving for the tying score, Wilson missed badly on a quick hitter to Stephen Carter and Anthony Kokal ran the errant pass back 61 yards for a Miami pick six.

McIntire finished with 136 yards and four touchdowns on just 17 carries, while Wilson threw for 361 yards on 18-of-34 passing.

Gerald Culver left the game due to bruised ribs in the first quarter, but Nottingham noted his absence was precautionary and he will return next week.

Carnegie Mellon returns home next Saturday, Oct. 22 to host Akron.

Man, just joining this train but loving the content. You think you'll keep rolling with Wilson under center? Fanbase has to be calling for his job after this one.

Appreciate you checking in, marshdaddy - always nice to see some new names in here!

As for Wilson, unfortunately he may still be the best option I have at the moment. The offense doesn't quite fit him due to his lack of mobility, but the only other option, Gerald Culver, has missed multiple games due to injury and has horrid accuracy ratings. Culver fits the offense better and has a bigger arm than Wilson, but both have glaring deficiencies that I'll have to work around for the rest of the season. Luckily I have an elite wide receiver in Eddie Williams, making both of their jobs a little bit easier when I can feed him with targets.

No. 7 Hawaii’s 29-game win streak comes to an end in a 42-24 defeat to No. 4 USC

                      ESPN The Magazine Cover Story
Robbed! – The latest polls have little love for the 7-0 Hurricanes.
It’s been a struggle for respect for the No. 16 Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes, who after a 28-6 win at rival Florida State, sit at 7-0 as one of the 10 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division I FBS football. The Hurricanes opened the season with a stunning 52-10 blowout victory at Ohio State, and have since tacked on wins over Pitt (41-21), Maryland (28-16), Cornell (38-7), Boston College (35-30), and Duke (58-10). Redshirt junior Curtis Lane has been terrific replacing the injured Robert Marve, throwing for 1,866 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, and his favorite target in fifth-year senior Kayne Farquharson (40 catches, 536 yards, 11 TD) has been one of the nation’s best wide receivers. Miami also may have the nation’s best defensive player at the moment in former junior college transfer Tom Rivas, as the senior linebacker has collected 48 tackles, six sacks, four interceptions, and three forced fumbles.

3-3 Tennessee side shocks unbeaten #6 Virginia on road, 34-13
One of the nation’s most disappointing teams picked up a signature win this past Saturday, as Tennessee improved to 3-3 with a 34-13 road upset of No. 6 Virginia. The Volunteers outscored the Cavaliers in the first half, 28-3, thanks to a pair of A.J. McCarron touchdown passes and a rushing score by Carlos Hyde. Tennessee’s defense forced three interceptions from Virginia redshirt junior Kyle Parker – one being an 82-yard pick six by redshirt senior cornerback C.J. Fleming – and pulled him down for four sacks. McCarron finished with 174 yards on 17-of-31 passing, while Hyde collected 115 yards on 21 carries. Cavaliers redshirt sophomore tailback Bryce Brown left the game in the first quarter with an injury.

#4 USC still runs Pac-10, knocks off #7 Hawaii, 42-24, to snap 29-game win streak
In a battle of Pac-10 unbeatens, No. 4 USC snapped No. 7 Hawaii’s 29-game winning streak with a 42-24 victory. The Trojans outscored the Warriors in the second half, 21-3, with that margin being the difference following a 21-21 first-half stalemate. USC junior quarterback Derek Carr threw both of his touchdowns in the first quarter, connecting with redshirt junior Charles Robinson twice to make it 14-0 early on. Hawaii would eventually bring it to a 21-21 deadlock late in the first half after junior signal-caller Matt Barkley threw his second touchdown of the night – however, he left favoring his back on the play and didn’t return. Trojans runningback Chad Lott rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns replacing the injured Marc Tyler, and the defense forced four interceptions from Warriors freshman Marcus Mariota, who replaced Barkley in the second half.

Griffin’s late TD toss pushes #15 Texas Tech past #3 Texas A&M, 42-35
Speaking of disappointing teams netting signature wins, No. 15 Texas Tech did just that by knocking off undefeated No. 3 Texas A&M, 42-35, thanks to a go-ahead Robert Griffin III touchdown pass to Dustin Strong with 2:42 remaining. Griffin was terrific, finishing with five total touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) and 352 yards through the air on 24-of-38 attempts. His four touchdowns were spread out to four different receivers, as he found the aforementioned Strong (1 catch, 7 yards), Tramain Swindall (11 catches, 132 yards), Keenan Allen (4 catches, 83 yards), and Dwayne Allen (1 catch, 23 yards). Aggies junior quarterback Russell Shepard also performed well, compiling 442 yards of offense (397 passing, 45 rushing) and two touchdowns (1 pass, 1 rush). Redshirt sophomore tailback Dion Lewis scored three times (2 rushing, 1 receiving) and had 178 scrimmage yards (113 receiving, 65 rushing), while junior wide receiver Josh Gordon caught eight passes for 167 yards.

How is Eric Frederick shaping up? I know scouting is a little more "secret" in this game, but is he looking like a quarterback that could fit the system and be that plug in and play guy right away?

Fingers crossed, but things look good on landing him! His commitment would be historic for the program, and I think he could come right in and start - especially if Wilson and Culver continue their inconsistent play. I don't think he'll have the ratings to overtake them outright (both Wilson and Culver are in the low 80s), but it looks like he possesses all the qualities - good arm strength and accuracy, decent speed - that I'm looking for from my starter.

A lot of negative attention on Wilson but the offense has been moving the ball. The defense has been giving up big points in just about every game. Gotta figure out how to produce some stops.

Yeah I've been disappointed in the defense, especially with the amount of talent that returned. I think Toth and Brown both are putting together All-American kind of seasons, but the consistency really hasn't been there for the rest of the unit. I think I've been a bit too messy on the sticks, trying to make the big play and going for interceptions because my quarterback situation doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but either way the defense should have much better results with the amount of talent on that side of the ball.
