Rumor: Paul Pogba unhappy with sub off vs Wolves

Manchester United enter the Int'l Window Under Controversy

By Felix Short | August 30, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Paul Pogba was not happy to see his number called off in Sunday's loss to Wolves. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, United Kingdom – Rumblings of unease have been reported in the United locked room centered around Paul Pogba. Pogba was subbed off for Donny van de Beek after scoring in United’s 2-1 loss in Wolverhampton on Sunday. Pogba was reportedly very angry in the locker room after the game, and many of his United teammates were unsure of the decision to put on van de Beek in a road game that was still tied.

The story is of elevated importance as United are currently working to find a contract extension with Pogba, who they once bought from Juventus for £89 million pounds. If he leaves for free after this season, it will be one of the more remarkably bad signings in United history after five seasons of injuries and inconsistency.

Pogba does seem to be thriving in new coach Thomas Walker’s system so far, having scored two goals in the team’s first three games and featuring more offensively than he has in the past. Pogba was relegated to a secondary midfield role under Ole Gunnar Skolsjær after the team brought in Bruno Fernandes.

The team has not commented on the situation, and Pogba has already left the club to join the French National Team for their world cup qualifying games this break.

What I'm Hearing: Hahn, Hanssen, Mejbri

There is a lot of excitement about the crop of youngsters that make up the Under-23 squad

      By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / August 31, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Julian Hahn has become the unquestioned leader of the group at only sixteen (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

What I’m Hearing – Manchester United has one of the most celebrated youth academies in world soccer, having produced some of the legends of the game including the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville. Today, the youth academy is still an integral part of the lifeblood of United’s identity. With that in mind, here are some things I’m hearing about the youngsters.

Julian Hahn – The German center forward (pictured above) turned sixteen in March, but he has already become the undisputed leader of the Under-23 squad. United coaches are blown away by his leadership and believe he has the mental makeup of a team captain one day. He still has a ways to go when it comes to refined skill and production, but some of the coaches feel that the senior squad doesn’t have a better leader. This is Hahn’s first season above the U-18 team and he has already made a huge impact in the locker room and on the training grounds. The United Youth Staff feel as if he will absolutely maximize his natural talent and they believe his leadership will certainly help the development of their higher ceiling prospects.

Daniel Hanssen – Hanssen became the buzz name entering the season as the highly touted Norwegian youth joined the United Academy after being convinced by senior team boss Thomas Walker. Hanssen is one of the most promising young Norwegians in the ’05 age group, and United coaches were anticipating the opportunity to see him with their own eyes. It’s been a nondescript start for Hanssen, who has seen some action on the left wing, as opposed to his natural center forward position. I’m told the move is only to get him better acquainted with what his teammates are looking at. The club does want to see him improve his defensive effort, but I’m told that they can see the high ceiling that they expected to after all the hype that accompanied his move.

Hannibal Mejbri – All of that said, it’s Hannibal Mejbri who has proven to be the most inspiring youngster for the Under-23’s in their early games. Mejbri, who turns 19 in January, has four goal contributions in the Under-23’s first two games. I’m told that they believe Mejbri will make his senior team debut this season, and that he’s a few months away from being ready for first team football. The young coaches love him and think he absolutely has a future with the first team. He has such a dominant attacking mindset and is always putting himself in positions to attack. Of all the kids on the current U-23 team, he is the most likely to make his Senior Team Debut this season.

Large contingent leaves United during International Break

Manchester United says au revoir to sixteen players representing ten countries in World Cup Qualifying

By Felix Short | August 31, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Scott McTominay is a key midfielder for the Scottish National Team (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United will see sixteen players leave the club this week as they’ve been called up to their respective national teams for World Cup Qualifying. Thirteen of those sixteen will stay in Europe as UEFA’s world cup qualifying round winds down, and the first ten teams secure a spot. Here’s a look at where United players will be next week.

England – England has sailed through World Cup Qualifying and are well on their way to qualifying this window. They can lock up a spot if they manage to win their first two games and beat Poland in London on September 8th. The national team will host Hungary before traveling to Andorra in their first two games. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all set to appear for the red and white.

France – the defending world cup champions will be without Raphaël Varane, as he failed to earn the call up, but they will be hosting Paul Pogba. Varane’s absence was surprising, but perhaps with the transfer to Manchester, the head man of the FFF Didier Deschamps felt that Varane would find more value staying put for now. France will host Bosnia and Herzegovina on the 2nd, followed by a trip to Ukraine, then back home against Finland. The defending world cup champions also seem destined to return to the World Cup.

Spain – David De Gea flirted with losing his starting spot at United last year, but he remains the Spanish national team’s undisputed number one. Spain is at the top of a tough group, with Italy and Sweden on their tails. They will play Sweden in Stockholm this break.

Rest of Europe – Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot will join the Portuguese national team as they desperately look to earn points in what is proving to be a tougher competition that they could have imagined. Victor Lindelöf joined a Sweden team that is also struggling to qualify, and will face off against Spain in Stockholm which could make or break their hopes of qualifying. Donny van de Beek was called into the Dutch national team and Scott McTominay will join the Scottish national team as they continue their qualifying campaigns. The Dutch team is almost assuredly in, whereas the Scottish team is almost assuredly out.

South America – Edinson Cavani will join the Uruguayan national team as they continue to push towards qualification. Uruguay is in a dog fight to earn a top four spot in CONMEBOL, with only 8 of 18 matches played. Alex Telles on the other hand will join a Brazil squad that is cruising towards yet another world cup.

Africa – Eric Bailly will join an Ivory Coast team that has drawn the toughest group in CAF, as they will go toe-to-toe with a Cameroonian squad that is determined to get there. Those two games head to head will determine who advances to the next round of CAF Qualifying, and only one can prevail.

            September Storylines: Manchester United

Can United answer some of the lingering early season questions?

By Felix Short | September 1, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

United have gotten off to an okay start to the season, but serious questions remain. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, United Kingdom – Manchester United has kicked off its 2021-22 campaign, but so far, we've received very little in the way of answers to our questions. Is United good enough? Do they have the right talent? Here are some of the most pressing questions for September.

How does United stand up in the Champions League?

The Champions League draw has come and gone, and now it is time to evaluate who United will play in the group stage and how they match up. They’ve been grouped with Villarreal CF of Spain, Atalanta of Italy, and BSC Young Boys of Switzerland, who advanced to the group stage by defeating the Slovakia’s Slovan Bratislava and Romania’s CFR Cluj in the preliminary rounds. Despite the experience, Young Boys will be the favorites to finish last, with Villarreal, Atalanta, and Manchester United all looking to move forward. United will be the favorite to win the group, although this does set up a fascinating rematch of last years Europa League final between Villarreal and United. Despite United’s loss in that final, they should advance to the knock out stages this year.

Will United take the EFL Cup seriously?

The EFL cup has traditionally been of secondary concern for the major teams in the Premier League, who choose to focus their efforts on winning the Premier League and having success on the continent. However, one of the best ways a new manager can endear himself to a new fan base is by putting some trophies in the trophy case. New manager Thomas Walker has yet to set himself up well with the fanbase, and perhaps a serious run at the EFL Cup trophy will do exactly that. United host third division Portsmouth at Old Trafford this month.

What will happen to Harry Maguire?

Three games into the season and it is clear that team captain Harry Maguire has not earned the trust of his new boss yet. The center-back lacks speed and creativity and how he will fit into Walker’s system had been a serious topic of discussion over the summer. Maguire’s only played in one game so far, a start at Southampton, in which his poor 1-v-1 defense led to Southampton’s only goal. He responded a few minutes later with a poor foul that earned him a yellow card. That goal was inconsequential as United blew out Southampton, 5-1, but Maguire was left off the roster in the next game. Thomas Walker has said all the right things regarding Maguire since taking the job, but actions speak louder than words. Three games may be too few to draw definitive conclusions, but United is scheduled to play six games in September, and we will certainly have a better idea what the plan is with Maguire when I write this article again next month.

            Paul Pogba?

It feels as if the fate and future of Paul Pogba will continue to be a storyline throughout the season. Another month has gone by without a contract extension, and it doesn’t seem like the two sides are any closer to an agreement. There have been positives. Pogba has been more influential under Thomas Walker than he had been under Skolsjær, scoring two goals in the first three games of the season and playing good all-around soccer. Yet, he was subbed off early in a tied game, and reportedly showed his frustration in the locker room after game. Is he getting along well with new Walker? Will he sign an extension this month? The questions keep coming with no answer in sight.

United Defeat Newcastle at Old Trafford

Newcastle looks like a prime relegation candidate four games into the season

By Felix Short | September 11, 2021, 4:05 PM EST

Manchester, England – Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday, gaining three points off the Magpies. Newcastle came into Old Trafford as the underdog, and that is exactly how they played as United cruised to victory.

United took control of the game from the opening possession and looked good for most of the first half. They made their mark in the thirteenth minute as Fred drove down the right wing, and crossed it over to Bruno Fernandes, who turned and fired into the back of the net to open the scoring. United held that 1-0 lead for the rest of the half but seemed on the verge of a second for much of the that time. Things went awry in the early second half, as Allan Saint-Maximin, who truly had a day for the Magpies, drove down the right flank, then crossed it to an open Miguel Almirón, who put away the equalizer in the 53rd minute.

Despite tying the game, United kept the momentum, and were able to breakthrough in the 76th minute. Bruno Fernandes fired a shot, which Newcastle goalie Freddie Woodman was able to block. Unfortunately for Woodman, the ball bounced off the post, then back off him and into the net for what would go down as an own goal. Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the game in the 85th minute after being fouled near the box. In signature style, he pounded the Free Kick in from 25 yards out to give United a 3-1 lead. United again gave up a late goal, as Allan Saint-Maximin was able to break free, and Harry Maguire could not recover, leading to a 94th minute goal for the Magpies to reduce the deficit to 3-2 before the final whistle.

“I feel like we played well, and we did what we had to do at home,” said United boss Thomas Walker, “We felt that we controlled the game and we deserved to win today. Newcastle have some good players that made some great individual plays, but we played better as a team.”

The lineup included Harry Maguire in part because both Victor Lindelöf and Eric Bailly were unavailable due to their time with their respective national teams. Bailly was jet lagged following the long journey and Lindelöf picked a stinger in his right shoulder that isn’t considered serious. Maguire wouldn’t make good on the opportunity, again being the main reason United gave up a goal, this time being too slow to cover Allan Saint-Maximin, even in a low block defense. His partner, Raphaël Varane has continued to steady the United defense, but finding Varane a reliable partner remains elusive for United.

Nemanja Matić made his season debut, coming on for Scott McTominay in the 68th minute. Also coming on as a sub was the 19-year-old Amad, who has now made his third appearance on the season. Thomas Walker has always stated that he believes strongly in giving young players opportunities and Amad and Anthony Elanga have been the beneficiaries of that.

Fred had a good game, showing a level that he hasn’t shown since arriving at Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk for £47 million in 2018. He’s been active and aggressive and played more of a role offensively than he had under Ole Gunnar Skolsjær. David De Gea and Scott McTominay also deserve mention for putting out solid performances.

Cristiano Ronaldo won man of the match for his 85th minute winner.

With that win, United climb to sixth in the Premier League with seven points. Newcastle falls to 17th with only two points so far on the season. Newcastle appears like it will be contending in the relegation battle all season.

United will now turn their focus to their first match of the Champions’ League group stage, as they travel to Villarreal on Wednesday for their rematch of last season’s Europa League Final.

                Newcastle United: 2
Goal Scorers: Miguel Almirón (53'), Allan Saint-Maximin (94'); Assists: Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey

                Manchester United: 3

Rumor: United Looking Closely at Wolfsburg's Lacroix

Wolfsburg's Maxcense Lacroix has the physical profile that Thomas Walker has identified as the future of Manchester United

                  By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / September 12, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Maxcense Lacroix has the type of defensive profile that Thomas Walker likes (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Latest Transfer Buzz – Sources have confirmed with RedDevilUnited.com that Manchester United is looking closely at French center-back Maxcense Lacroix. Lacroix is currently prospering in the Bundesliga with a VfL Wolfsburg side that is about to enter Champions League competition.

Lacroix, broke out with Wolfsburg last season, making 29 starts for one of the best defensive sides in the Bundesliga. At 21, he is exactly the type of young center-back that United is expected to pursue in the Thomas Walker era. Lacroix stands a healthy 6’3” with good vertical ability, but his most obvious skillset is his blazing speed. That speed allows him to play incredibly aggressively defensively while still being able to maintain good positioning and run-down attacking players. He seems to be an ideal fit for Thomas Walker’s high-pressure defense.

Lacroix signed a four-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2020, so he will cost a full transfer fee. Transfermarkt lists his current market value at £27.5 million. Wolfsburg bought Lacroix from Ligue Duex side FC Sochaux for just £4 million fifteen months ago, but there is no indication that Wolfsburg intends to let Lacroix leave this winter. With his profile skyrocketing however, Lacroix may be a name to keep an eye on moving into next summer.

Many scouts that we’ve been in contact with believe Lacroix’s physicality will fit in well in the Premier League.

“His stature and toughness fit in well with in the [Premier] League,” an unnamed scout told RedDevilUnited.com this week, “But his speed. His speed is different. He’s very fast and it would be very interesting to see how he would affect games at this level. He’s the kind of player that could really come in and impact how things are done.”

Ronaldo Puts His Mark on Champions League

Manchester United dominated a shellshocked Villarreal to open the Champions league group stage

By Felix Short | September 15, 2021, 7:08 PM EST

Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals as he dominated against his former La Liga rival. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Villarreal, Spain – Manchester United fans are beginning to see why the board chose Thomas Walker to take over as new manager on Wednesday night, as United went to Spain to face off with Villarreal CF in the opening game of the Champions’ League group stage. The match had plenty of hype as a rematch of last year’s Europa League final, but United dominated from the opening kick. When Villarreal CF won last season, Cristiano Ronaldo played at Juventus. The story was different tonight as Ronaldo stamped his mark not only on Villarreal, but this entire competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Paul Pogba set him up. Ronaldo fired it and while it was blocked Gerónimo Rulli, the ball simply flew high, giving Ronaldo the opportunity to go up and head it into an empty net. Just six minutes later, Ronaldo struck again, as a high press and a bit of awkward luck had the ball fall at Ronaldo’s feet in the box. Villarreal was clearly shellshocked and frustrated at this point, and it cost them just two minutes later as midfielder Daniel Parejo made an egregious tackle on Fred that earned him a Red Card. Down a man and looking up at a 2-0 deficit, Villarreal fell apart, and United capitalized.

Ronaldo scored again in the 24th minute after Pogba flicked a ball into the open space beyond the defenders, allowing Ronaldo to run to it and get a 1v1 with the keeper. He didn’t miss. When the same situation happened in the 45th minute after Bruno Fernandes placed the through ball for Ronaldo, he didn’t miss again. United took a 4-0 lead into the half, then parked the bus in the second half. Villarreal recovered a bit at half time and were more competitive in the second half. They even managed to break down United’s defense and notch a goal, but the deficit was clearly too great.

Cristiano Ronaldo putting four goals in the back of the net will grab the headlines, but it is truly worth taking note of the fact that Ronaldo now has 139 Champions League goals, by far the most in history. Unsurprisingly, Ronaldo was named man of the match.

“This is why I came here,” Ronaldo said after the game, “I want to play in big games, I want to help my team win trophies. That’s what I’m here to do. That’s what we’re here to do.”

United came out in a 4-3-3 in what many would consider their best lineup. It paid off as United dominated from the opening kick. Worthy of note was that Victor Lindelöf played next to Raphaël Varane and United put up their best defensive effort of the young season. This pairing may be the starting duo moving forward in Thomas Walker’s lineup.

“I think our defense played really well,” United boss Thomas Walker said in his post-game press conference, “We spent a lot of time in the preseason making sure we could score goals. But I feel comfortable with our offense, especially with the talent we have. It’s our defense that has been a little shaky in the first few weeks, but I think we took a positive step tonight.”

Thomas Walker will receive extra praise from the United faithful this week, as his team clearly knew exactly how to attack Villarreal. By playing a high line, Villarreal left too much space between their back lines and the goalkeeper. That goalkeeper, Gerónimo Rulli, was too conservative on coming out to clear the ball. This left enough space for United’s midfielders to play through balls into the open space, which allowed United to land 1v1’s with the keeper. This was an excellent game plan for United, who have focused on an outside-in offensive strategy so far this season. Walker and the coaching staff deserve a lot of credit for finding the weakness in this Villarreal team and exploiting it.

Against ten men, United moved to a back five in the second half, using Fred in the center-back role, and sat in a low block to close out the game. The move is one that coach Walker may look to employ more since his team has struggled to suffocate games away late.

United will travel to London on Saturday to face top of the table West Ham United in London Stadium as their Premier League schedule resumes.

Does United Have a Problem Killing Games?

Manchester United has given up late goals in each of their first five games of the season

Manchester, United Kingdom – Mateusz Klich scored in the 92nd minute to help Leeds earn a draw with Manchester United to kick off the Premier League season. Southampton’s Adam Armstrong chipped in a goal in the 58th minute with his team down four goals in the Southampton-United match up. Wolves winger Pedro Neto sent United home with a loss with his 94th minute heroics. Allan Saint-Maximin closed the gap for Newcastle with his 94th minute goal in a 3-2 win for United. Most recently, up 4-0 at halftime, United were unable to keep Villarreal off the scoreboard, as they notched a second half goal.

Five games into the season and United has given up a late goal in all five games. This begs the question, does United have a problem locking it down on defense? They currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League and have scored enough that it often won’t matter. Cristiano Ronaldo has eight goals in those five games, and the rest of the team has added another six, so it’s not as if they are in desperate need of wins. But a team’s trends will come back to haunt them, and this has become a disturbing trend.

“I’m not happy about that,” coach Thomas Walker said in the post-game press conference after the Villarreal game, “We need to kill games. We need to have that ability because we’re going to score a lot of goals. Can we score a few goals, kill the game, get on the bus and focus on the next one? That’s the point we need to get to.”

It would be easy to place the blame on the lack of consistency United has gotten from its center-backs this season. Harry Maguire has been removed from the lineup on most nights, and new coach Thomas Walker has been experimenting with Victor Lindelöf and Eric Bailly, as well as having to work summer signing Raphaël Varane into the mix. The lack of consistency among any pairing probably indicates that they should improve over time.

Thomas Walker’s high intensity defense may involve more communication that United is ready for. They’ve only worked with Walker for a matter of weeks at this point, and it is entirely possible that they haven’t quite gelled yet as a group. Manchester United has never played this style of defense before so perhaps it is only a matter of repetitions?

These late game blunders have already cost United three points on the season, and it will cost them if they don’t get it fixed. United next travel to London Stadium to take on top of the table West Ham this weekend. Will we see an improved defense from United against one of the better teams in the Premier League?

Manchester United pulled out the win in a back and forth, exciting Premier League match up

London, England – Manchester United rolled into London and won their third straight game on Saturday, defeating West Ham three-nil in a tremendous game. Despite the final score line, the United-West Ham game lived up to the billing as the best game of the weekend and fans across the nation enjoyed it. West Ham entered play at the top of the Premier League table with twelve points. United sat in sixth but were on the rise. Cristiano Ronaldo came in having scored four games on Wednesday against Villarreal, while West Ham striker Michail Antonio had scored four goals in the last three games. This matchup had all the makings of a great game and for eighty-plus minutes it didn’t disappoint.

The two teams traded blows as the game felt back and forth for much of the first half. The first sign of trouble for West Ham came in the 33rd minute, when their star holding midfielder Declan Rice picked up a Yellow Card. That was made much worse six minutes later when his partner Tomáš Souček also picked up a Yellow Card. West Ham, whose defense is rooted in its two standout defensive midfielders, now suddenly felt very fragile. These ominous signs pointed to catastrophe, which arrived shortly after when Souček was forced to foul Fred in the box. Not only was United given a Penalty Kick, Souček was given a red card. Cristiano Ronaldo put the ball in the back of the net in the 45th+3 minute, to take United into the break, up 1-0 and up a man.

But West Ham was unbeaten and untied coming into this game, and they had no intention of going down lightly. They played very hard in the second half, and almost found the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Michael Antonio got a clean shot off, and only a world class save from David De Gea kept United in front. The game continued going back and forth, keeping the fans on the edge of their seat for most of the second half. Eventually though, West Ham’s defense finally cracked as Edinson Cavani was able to play a ball to the wing to Marcus Rashford, who crossed it back into Cristiano Ronaldo for his second goal of the game in the 82nd minute. Anthony Martial ended it in the 88th minute with a beautiful cross from the right wing to a streaking Marcus Rashford, who headed it in to make the final 3-0. Still, West Ham fought hard and played incredibly well.

“Wow what a fun game,” said United Manager Thomas Walker, “that was so fun to watch and I’m sure so fun to play in. Our guys fought hard, but I must give credit to West Ham. They’re a really good team that fought through a lot of adversity to play incredibly well.”

The 3-0 win marks the first clean sheet of the season for Thomas Walker’s side, who talked after Wednesday’s win at Villarreal about how his defense was improving but needed to be better. Likely not unrelated was the fact that Victor Lindelöf and Raphaël Varane were the starting center-backs for United again. Those two seem like they will be the favorite pair moving forward.

Also worthy of special note is the impact that Marcus Rashford had off the bench. Rashford replaced Anthony Elanga around the 60th minute, and immediately made his presence felt. His speed over the top opened up the West Ham defense in a way that United had not been able to do beforehand. His speed was crucial in United’s second goal as Cavani had an outlet under pressure. It was even more clear after Rashford knocked in the third goal, that his speed against a tired defense is a real weapon. Rashford had two goal involvements today and shined as the super-sub today.

Edinson Cavani, who earned a hockey assist for United’s second goal, started today as a second striker, and played the role very well. It will be interesting to see if Cavani is given more time in that role moving forward. Other top performers for United included David De Gea, Fred, Victor Lindelöf, and Scott McTominay.

With the win, United moves up to 3rd place in the Premier League with 10 points. West Ham sits right above them in second with 12 points as both teams now trail Chelsea, who have 13 points.

Manchester United will turn their focus to cup competition as they host EFL1-side Portsmouth on Wednesday in the third round of the EFL Cup.

                              Ronaldo on Historic Scoring Pace

Can Cristiano Ronaldo break the Premier League Scoring Record?

Manchester, United Kingdom – Cristiano Ronaldo scored 36 goals in 44 games for Juventus last season, but the Italian giants finished in fourth place in the league. They needed to rebuild the roster and they weren’t going to do that centered around the 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was sold to Manchester United, and many thought it signaled the beginning of the end for one of the greatest of all time.

Six games into the season and it’s clear that isn’t true. Ronaldo has started the season on fire for the Red Devils, with huge performances in the Premier League, and a dominating four-goal performance against Villarreal CF in the Champions League. Through five premier league games, Ronaldo has six goals, and is on pace for 45 on the season. The Premier League Record is only 32, and while Ronaldo is unlikely to break the record, he may very well spend much of the season threatening it.

Ronaldo’s biggest single season scoring output in his first go around with Manchester United was his 31-goal 2007-08 season in which Manchester United won the Premier League and Champions League. Ronaldo has put up seven additional seasons with thirty or more goals since then in both La Liga and Serie A. And now he’s back in red and is scoring at a level that few could ever dream of.

“It is cool, but my goal is to win trophies,” Ronaldo said after his four-goal performance at Villarreal. “We want to win the Champions League and the league title. Those are our goals. My individual stats aren’t important.”

As humble as he may sound, last Wednesday’s performance in Spain reminded the world that Ronaldo is still one of the greatest of all time. His four first-half goals set the standard for Champions League domination.

Confirmed: Mejbri, Shoretire and Hardley to temporarily train with first team

With an EFL Cup game against Portsmouth on the horizon, it's possible we see any of the three youngsters in United's next match

Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been the offensive firepower of the United U-23 Squad so far this season (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Confirmed – Manager Thomas Walker announced this morning in his press conference that three of United’s Academy Prospects will be training with the senior team for the next week or so, and that they may feature with the team in any of their upcoming matches. Those three prospects are defender Björn Hardley, midfielder Hannibal Mejbri and winger Shola Shoretire. These three seem like prime candidates to feature in September 22nd’s matchup with Portsmouth F.C. in the EFL Cup. United are hosting the third division side and will be the prohibitive favorites.

If Hardley does appear in any of the upcoming games, it will be his senior team debut for United. United bought Hardley from Dutch-side NAC Breda for £200k in July of 2019. He’s been the top central defender for United’s Under-23 team this season, and has grown into the body to hold up against men. At 6’2”, the 18-year-old looks ready for a step up in competition.

Perhaps the more anticipated appearance will be that of Hannibal Mejbri. Mejbri played eight minutes last season in one match, but he has drawn rave reviews from scouts so far this year as the most dynamic player on United’s Under-23 squad. Mejbri, who is still only eighteen, has been spoken about as the favorite to win the Jimmy Murphy Award this year, give to the best player in the Academy. Anthony Elanga won that award last season and has earned a role with the first team this season, and Mejbri would love to do the same soon. United bought Mejbri from AS Monaco for £5 million in 2019, so they clearly believe in his talent.

“These are three talented and hardworking boys that we feel will bolster us for the next few games,” said United manager Thomas Walker. He stressed that this arrangement would be temporary and that all three will return to the Youth Squad soon.

Walker has continually framed youth development and opportunity as one of the central pillars of his reign. He has made that clear by giving three starts to Anthony Elanga, and three bench appearances to Amad, both of whom have spent the early season training with the first team. Walker is heavily involved in the recruitment and development of young players, and continually giving young players a chance like he has will only bolster United’s pool of young talent and their ability to recruit those high caliber kids.

Shoretire, 17, made two senior team appearances off the bench at the end of last season. The United Under-23 squad is loaded with attacking talent, but Shoretire has still managed to earn plenty of praise for his ability.
