Re: AEW Revolution (March 6th, 2022)
This is a stacked freaking card. One thing I like that AEW does is they can build good PPV cards without needing titles. Maybe it’s because the whole “Wins/Losses matter” tag line they love to say (even though we have plenty of examples of people “jumping the line”), but I do seem to care more about the outcome of these matches.
My issue with AEW is that since they don’t like to go the DQ route, they protect their wrestlers by putting them against people a tier below. So we know Punk will beat a Spears and there’s no intrigue there. We know Hangman will beat Archer but Archer will beat Starks who will beat a QT. The matches are usually good and they’re not squashes, but essentially knowing the result can make for some lackluster TV viewing (this is why the promos are often the best parts of the show- especially since they give the wrestlers creative freedom).
However, the PPVs are always great because it’s people in the same “tier” going at it and I want to see who wins and will get pushed forward. Also since people don’t usually get a billion rematches, it makes some of these encounters feel special. It’s also easier to have bigger PPVs when you only do 4 a year (I wish they’d do 6).
The only match I don’t care about is basically anything involving Matt Hardy/AHFO. I really hope this “merger” is leading to a split where Andrade/Matt can have a match and Andrade can move on from the whole HFO thing. Hardy feels like such a waste at this point in his career and he can’t seem to elevate anyone who is with or against him.
