Re: 2022 Around the Nation - Championship Week

You could argue the Big Ten Championship is a semifinal, does Michigan State jump into the BCS with a win over Iowa? They'd have wins over Iowa & Ohio State despite the two losses.

That's a tough one to read! I to was on the receiving end of a last minute field goal loss in the conference championship this season. However, what it does do it fuel the fire to return and get that revenge next season.

It also seems as though against Alabama it sparked the team into life, as I really didn't see them playing you so tough without their starting quarterback, but it goes to show you don't underestimate The Crimson Tide, ever!
True that. they're always gonna have talent.

Absolutely, it certainly seemed that way and I think given multiple iterations you would see that possibility. Ultimately, MSU didn't have the upward mobility that I thought. Nor did Ohio State ultimately without a game this week.

It sucks for sure. There will be no issue with motivation however, as our bowl game is against the team that handed us our only regular season loss this year in Auburn.

          Thanks Fellas

Hawkeye defenders, led by Wyckoff, scoop up multiple awards

Defensive tackle Tyris Wyckoff has been a key part of the defensive line since earning a spot in the lineup as a true freshman. Wyckoff had at least five sacks for three straight years before exploding to 16 sacks as a senior. That helped Wyckoff to take home the 2022 Bronco Nagurski trophy and the 2022 Rotary Lombardi awards. Wyckoff also was named a first-team All American. Wyckoff also made 22 stops behind the line of scrimmage this year for the Hawkeyes.

Defensive end Khayman Chia won the Lombardi Award last year, and was named a first-team All American for the second year in a row. Sophomore Defensive tackle Keegan Slack was named to the second team All Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes are expected to have a talented defensive line once again next year, especially if Chia comes back. The team's recruiting has improved massively since Wyckoff stepped in as a green but talented freshman, and he made good on Clark's trust by improving significantly over the course of his career to bridge the gap, rarely missing any time. Chia has 30 sacks in his career so far. Wyckoff finishes his career with 33.5 sacks from the defensive tackle position."

Injured Hawkeyes not likely to play in the bowl game; Careers of Halligan, Parsons likely over

Jordan Parsons missed nearly the entire season with a badly broken leg suffered in wee k 2. Unfortunately for Parsons, a sophomore, he is not expected to play fooball again. Parsons was able to come to grips with the reality in the weeks after the injury.

For senior WR Lukas Halligan, the reality of his injury has become more difficult. Halligan suffered a brutal shoulder injury in week 7. Doctors told him that he would likely be able to play in a bowl game if it was sometime around New Year's Day or later, but the shoulder hasn't responded like the team hoped, and Halligan is unlikely to return. Halligan was the team's leading receiver as a sophomore and junior, with 813 yards receiving and two touchdowns as a sophomore and 59 receptions, 867 yards, and 7 touchdowns as a junior. Halligan caught 12 passes for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns this year before getting injured. He was limited by nagging injuries in the early going.

According to J.D. Clark Halligan will be missed.

"He worked as hard on his craft as anyone, and it's just disappointing the way things have ended. He won two national championships and was a huge part of our success those two years," said Clark.

Junior HB Larry Lloyd and sophomore cornerback Lionel Robinson, who have been hurt the last few weeks, are projected to return next season. Lloyd in particular has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Without question the most explosive back in NCAA football, Lloyd has averaged 6.6 yards per carry and has 17 rushes of more than 20 yards over parts of two seasons, never having over 162 carries in either of the two seasons. He has rushed for 2,034 yards on 307 carries in his career, with 23 touchdowns.

Auburn matchup in Capital One Bowl might have a similar bent as the first

The Hawkeyes have been tabbed for the Capital One Bowl, opposite the Auburn Tigers who beat them earlier this season. The Tigers dominated in the trenches in the first game, in a downpour. Heavy rain is projected for the Capital One Bowl as well.

The Hawkeyes might have been disappointed to attend the Capital One Bowl after finishing 6th in the BCS final rankings, however the chance to make amends for the early season loss reportedly has the Hawkeyes plowing through some of their most arduous practices of the season.

                    2022 Season Overview

2022/2023: The 2022 season begins on page 132. After two national championships in a row, the team was ranked #12 out of the gate. Discussion of the team in the preseason was centered on the quarterback position. For the first time in years, the position was up in the air without Eddie Allen at the helm. Nathan Malone was tabbed to start with Antwione Harkless mixed in here and there. Not to give anything away, but the conversation about the quarterbacks will likely to continue into the 2023 season as the lack of a proven signal caller was likely the difference between a 12-win season and another national championship. The season started at home with a conference game against Maryland which was over at halftime with Iowa leading 21-0 en route to a 34-10 win. Larry Lloyd toted the rock 19 times for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Kenard Goodman picked up a pair of touchdowns. Khayman Chia, freshman Jordan Kijenmij, and Jordan Parsons had sacks with Chia getting a pair. Unfortunately, Parsons suffered an ugly compound leg fracture and this game would be the end of his career. Next up was the annual matchup against rival Iowa State. Freshman strong safety Drew Farmer and cornerback Joe Gibson had back to back interceptions returned for touchdowns as Iowa picked off five passes in total in a 49-17 win. A big road trip was next and the team were ambushed in rainy conditions by #11 Auburn and upended, 20-27. The Tigers ran for 213 yards and Matt Bobo (second team All American) was a one-man wrecking crew with 6 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Tyris Wyckoff was a bright spot on an otherwise dreary day with 2 sacks, but it wasn't enough. The Hawkeyes licked their wounds and had a trip to Bloomington Indiana up next. The game was more adventurous than Coach Clark would have liked with Indiana forcing four turnovers. When Larry Lloyd is on form a lot can be overcome, and his 177 yards with 3 touchdowns, including a 75-yard touchdown run were enough to escape with a 41-33 win. Tyris Wyckoff was once again a force to be reckoned with as he registered three sacks. Next up, new coach Jimmy Lake welcomed Iowa to their annual rivalry matchup and fight for the Floyd of Rosedale against Minnesota. Iowa were in for a near shootout with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by the talented Andre Davis making the final score closer than the game was. Larry Lloyd had this game in the palm of his hands the entire time, carrying 29 times for 157 yards and 2 TD, adding another touchdown on a reception. A bye week that was supposed to be a point of renewal turned sour when Lukas Halligan - uncharacteristically struggling in the early going - suffered an injury in practice and would miss the rest of the season. It was on to Wisconsin and another battle for the Heartland Trophy. Nathan Malone struggled, throwing four receptions as Wisconsin dominated on the ground. Bad decision making at key moments led to the Badgers spitting the bit as Iowa got away with one, 24-17. Brandon Butler returned an interception 78 yards to give Iowa the lead early in the fourth quarter and Larry Lloyd went for 120 yards and scored the game winning touchdown. Iowa, now 5-1, welcomed 5-2 Northwestern to Kinnick Stadium in week 9. It would be a tale of good news and horrible news as the Hawkeyes held the Wildcats to just 144 yards of total offense and no points. Jordan Kijenmij had the best game of his young career with 5 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks, and a FF. The bad news: Larry Lloyd went off again with 27 carries for 151 yards and 2 TD, but sustained a broken leg that would keep him out the rest of the season. Week 10 welcomed the annual Proctologist Bowl against Illinois - You figure it'll be o.k. but it's definitely going to be uncomfortable. Nathan Malone reached his zenith before the fall in this one with a last-seconnd touchdown pass to NeShawn Talley that gave the #2 Hawkeyes a 27-23 victory. The Hawks struggled on the ground without the injured Lloyd but D.J. Halloway stepped up on defense with an interception returned 58 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter which helped matters greatly. Purdue were next up at Kinnick and it took four overtimes and 64 points for Iowa to complete their 25th home victory in a row, which led the nation. Malone struggled early, completing just 3 of his first 10 passes, before Antwione Harkless was brought into the game with Purdue leading 24-0 late in the second quarter. Harkless threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Nick Vessel to begin the comeback and slowly the Hawkeyes caught up. Kenard Goodman did his best Larry Lloyd impression with 129 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns and Armand Holmes had his moment of the season with a 70-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter which was almost enough to offset all his drops. Harkless was money in the overtime periods, running for two scores as Iowa outlasted Purdue, an underrated and very hated rival, 64-56. A huge game awaited #3 Iowa next at #7 Michigan State and Harkless was officially inserted as the starter. Once again, the Cardiac Kids from Kinnick had a serious game on their hands, one that Harkless won with a last second and no timeouts touchdown pass to none other than NeShawn Talley, the same dude who caught the game winner from Malone. MSU, without starting quaterback Aaron Lewis, didn't have quite enough in the tank to take down the Hawkeyes despite a solid defensive effort. The Hawkeyes suffered another significant loss as star CB Lionel Robinson was lost for the season with a back injury. For the second time in three weeks, an opponent was without their starting QB as the Crimson Tide, Alabama, tip-toed their way into town to give the Hawkeyes yet another difficult game. This one was as even as you could wish, except that Alabama gave up one more turnover - perhaps the one Jaivonn Bender intercepted and took 54 yards to the house in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes survived 37-31 and traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska for what would be just their third, and final, blowout victory of the season as they dropped the Huskers, 38-17. D.J. Halloway joined Bender the week before in returning an interception 54 yards for a touchdown for the second straight week. Khayman Chia began to round into form that would see him win his secondn Rotary Lombardi trohy, and Reginald Clancy had the best game of his career with 6 tackles and 2 sacks. Time to get serious, and that's just the attitude #6 Michigan State brought to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game. And they had their starting quarterback, Aaron Lewis at the helm this time. Sparty once again were able to cause trouble for the Iowa offense, forcing two turnovers as Lewis worked out the kinks after coming back from an injury. Lewis took over late and guided his team to the Big Ten conference title despite Coach Clark's best efforts, 24-27. Harkless completed 29 of 37 passes for 303 yards and proved to be a much more accurate passer than this season's alternative, but was held to just 6 yards rushing in this one thanks to the Spartan defense. Iowa were selected to play in the Capital One Bowl against Auburn, allowing Iowa to exact a painful form of revenge, again in rainy-bordering-on-monsoon conditions. NeShawn Talley was again the man catching a huge touchdown pass and B.J. Harrison kicked the game winning field goal in a 16-14 game that was a bit of a drag, just like the weather. Nonetheless the Hawkeyes got even with Auburn for the year, and earned an impressive 12th victory. Not bad for a down year.

Coach Clark managed to keep things rolling following the departure of
Eddie Allen. The team picked up 12 wins and was in every one of
their games. The offense took a big step back and Clark will be looking
for a definitive answer at QB whether that's this year or another. A full
season of Larry Lloyd as a senior would help.

Clark is good. Real good. Know who's also good? Urban Meyer. Those
104 wins authored by Clark? Cute. Urban has 230. Those 31 losses?
That's not many, but Urban has just 15 more, for an 83.3% on wins as
a head coach, compared to 77% for coach Clark. Just another reason to
think that the rivalry will continue. Urban is 58, just five years the senior
                    of the 53-year-old Coach Clark.

                      2022 Offseason - Part 1

                      Coaching Carousel Coverage

                      Alabama keeps Howell;
Michigan, Georgia, and Cal hire new coaches

There weren't a ton of big teams hiring new coaches this year.

Alabama extended the contract of Nick Howell but it probably wasn't an easy call. The Crimson Tide have been just a shell of their former selves over the past few years, and a 7-6 record last year wasn't anything to celebrate. Nevertheless, the school saw enough in their late season performances, including a near upset of Iowa, to keep Howell. Howell isn't likely to do much with his Level 3 game management and Level 8 recruiting.

Michigan hired coach Todd Orlando, who was head coach at Georgia State as they surprisingly finished in the Top 10 this year. Orlando parlayed his A+ prestige rating into a spot in the Big Ten. He replaces Eliah Drinkwitz, who has played a role similar to that of a doctor assisting in his patient's suicide in his time at Michigan. For Michigan's sake, this needs to be the right hire as Michigan has been so bad for so long that their name and image aren't quite what they used to be. Orlando runs a spread offense and a 4-3 defense. Orlando was an offensive coordinator by trade and will need to build up his game management and especially his recruiting skills if he is to give Coach Clark any trouble on the recruiting trail.

Georiga has dug up the grave of Gary Patterson (how is he only 61!?) and put him in charge of their football program. Patterson will bring his 4-2-5 defense to Athens as well as his Level 18 game management including Big Game and Coachstradamus into the fold, as well as Level 13 recruiting.

Cal (5-star prestige) had a horrible year and fired Rod Carey as a result. They have hired Karl Massey, former offensive coordinator at USC, to fill the position.

                      Notable Names

Skipping to some guys I've heard of before....

Major Applewhite was named the head coach at Bowling Green. Hew as 9-4 at UAB and felt that Bowling Green would be a better job for him... Apparently.

Nick Rolovich, formerly an assistant on Coach Clark's staff, has accepted the head coahcing job at Maryland after going 9-5 at San Diego State last year. Yep... All of us dynasty heads are a just a little worried about this move. He gave up California recruiting for the Maryland job? We wish him well in getting Maryland back on their feet.

Lincoln Riley has been hired by NC State as a head coach. Tim DeRuyter (another former assistant of Coach Clark's) was fired. Riley has awesome offensive coordinator skills. Now the question is whether he has what it takes in the ACC.

Phil Parker (Iowa's DC last season) was hired away to be the head coach at San Diego State. Parker's name got around thanks to the 12-2 season Iowa had. Iowa in response has hired Victor Brown, formerly the DC at TCU (9-4 last year) as their DC.

UCLA has hired Sonny ****s to be their offensive coordinator. He will take on a ton of talent that has been assembled by the brilliant mind of Jim Mora Jr. over the years. Being serious now, Mora has gone 105-43 in his 11 years at NCAA.

                        2022 Offseason - Part 2

Khayman Chia to Stay another year

Junior defensive end Khayman Chia had plans to go pro and was a projected 3rd round pick. Knowing Chia's work ethic Clark promised him that if he stayed he would be at least a 2nd round pick. Another part of the pitch: Clark promised he would not regret staying to get his college degree. Chia will return for his senior season which is a huge boost for the team. As an aside it's cool when a player's extra ratings coincide with his actions. I haven't been able to convince many players not to leave early and with his incredible citizenship rating (which in my mind encompasses program loyalty) it should be no surprise he was open to the discussion. Chia needs 12 sacks this season to tie the school record of 42 sacks, set by Jared DeVries. (Note: NCAA says 42 and Wikipedia says 43. We'll go with what the NCAA says because I'm not that 4N4L.

Freshman WR from Hiawatha to transfer to NIU

Freshman wide receiver Matthew Rexroth will transfer to NIU due to lack of playing time. Rexroth redshirted this season. Clark saw promise in Rexroth and wants to give chances to Iowa recruits, however there is typically better talent in other states and they are expected to work hard to earn spots, not complain after one year on the bench. After a discussion with Rexroth, Clark felt it was best not to push the issue. Rexroth will no longer be within 30-40 minutes of his home town, but family will be able make the trip out to DeKalb, just outside Chicago, in 3 to 4 hours.

                        Injury Departure and Discipline Dismissal

Defensive end Jordan Parsons had the best speed of any defensive lineman on the team, and earned a pair of sacks in little time on the field at the end of his freshman year and beginning of his sophomore year. Although not a starter, the team saw a role for him coming off the bench to provide energy and speed off the edge this season. Parsons earned a sack, but was badly injured in the same game, and his career is over at Iowa.

Freshman tackle Quay Fellows got in trouble a few times in class and on campus. Eventually, he had a falling out with Coach Clark and even when contacted at home following a dismissal from the team, he no longer made himself available to the team from a distance. Therefore, he was cut.

#37 Kenard Goodman, #60 Tyris Wyckoff, and #83 Lukas Halligan

                        Other Players Leaving

WR Matthew Rexroth - Transfer, NIU
LT Quay Fellows - Dismissed from Team
                        C Scott Rollins - Graduation

RT Derek Walton - Graduation - Walton was the rare walk-on that gets a chance to start. He improved a lot and was slated to start, but got rocked in his first start, and Alec Gehlhausen stepped in. It wasn't necessarily the way Gehlhausen played that led to Walton never getting another shot. Walton was 6'2" and despite weighing near 300 lbs. was manhandled so thoroughly that it was a little eye opening. Gehlhausen looks more the part. However, the long absences from doing this chise made me forget about the storylines to some extent, and I would have liked to get him some extra time in blowouts or something and see how he responded.

Don't believe what you heard -
Iowa have signed their best class ever

Signing day is tomorrow. I've been digging, begging, spying, and rumor mongering to the best of my ability and I'm confident in saying that this recruiting class is going to take Iowa to new heights. Iowa hauled in the #1 class in the nation last year on paper, but few of those players contributed significantly to the team this season. Iowa might not be called the #1 class again this year - Suburban Meyer and OSU or Brian Kelly at Notre Dame might have something to say about that. Comparing last year's Iowa class to this one: There Ain't No Comparison. Whatsoever.

Looking at the classes, and assuming I knew nothing about what Nick Vessel did this year (pretty good) and even considering the promise offered by players like Harkless, Joshua Mack the quarterback who redshirted, 5-star DE Jordan Kijenmij (they don't have a 5-star in this class).... Looking at these players on tape, I would take at least four, and as many as seven players before I would take any of last year's players. This class is that good. I'd put it up against Ohio State's class sight unseen.

This is literally the best class in the history of Iowa football. And like... take my hand, and let's go back 10 years to a time when the term "literally," uh... meant something. Like LITERALLY.

I honestly don't know how anyone will stop this team in a couple of years with the talent they have and the talent they're adding to it, and I'm pumped AF! My only concern is they have signed so many players and lost so few that it might be difficult to figure out who to cut.

My favorite player in the class is TE Hayden Polk out of Grapevine, TX. It's difficult to know which former Hawkeye to compare him to, but a Dallas Clark type is what I'm thinking of now. Tight end U!

I think CB Laterion Thomas, OLB Dez Dillon, DT Jerry Adams, and at least one of the offensive linemen they signed will start immediately. Go past those top tier guys, and there's a massive amount of depth beneath them. Players like 4-star MLB Willie Nelson, TE Sal Hernandez who is just massive, and a host of other solid players are in line behind them.

And don't sleep on my boy Seth Bodensteiner out of Decorah! Go Vikes!

Strap it on because this season is going to be sick.

Joe is a new writer. Let us know if you can stand him enough for us to keep him. Joe played football at Decorah then attended Iowa, smashing kids in intramurals. Joe wanted to be a scout in either baseball or football but he and his wife started pumping out so many children that it just wasn't feasible.

Offseason Part 4 - Training and Cuts

It's the annual time where I shill for the usage of some type of progression / potential regression system because I feel it is a lot of fun and leads to a much more realistic looking and feeling roster. I see that there are some cool options that people are doing for College Football Revamped that could just be worked right into it if you're working on PC. That looks super promising and hope to try it out one day. But using an existing dynasty that I don't want to chance screwing with, that is for the future, for me.

I have a thread detailing how I do mine somewhere in the NCAA forum if you're interested in seeing how it works.

I added one column above, there, to what was there before. EXP Train, or expected training/improvement. It's really simple, it just means that of the range that player's ETH (work ethic) grants him as the random roll, that is the expected mean improvement if you rolled a bunch of times. We had an astoundingly good training session overall, I think it is the luckiest one yet. The sum of the expected training for the players was 180, and we got 209 points of improvement. All players had an average training of 3.9, and the players that had at least one point of improvement (rather than regression) averaged 4.27,

Where we obviously got unlucky was that 1) the QB's rolled horrible improvement, 2) Larry Lloyd rolled a zero, 3) Khayman Chia who I promised would be drafted a round higher next year rolled a zero improvement... Well, we can complain all we want but both of our top corners had awesome improvement and are (on paper) complete shutdown cornerbacks now. My strong safety rolled a +10, and should continue to improve well every year with his 95 Work ethic rating.

Cut that I recreated on Penn State

                              C.J. Terry - left on own accord - JR, 6'4" 231 - #84 preferred number
                              81 OVR, 74 SPD, 75 STR, 67 AGI, 82 ACC, 72 AWR, 79 BTK, 77 TRK, 68 ELU, 76 BCV, 71 SFA, 68 SPM, 69 JKM, 68 CAR, 77 CTH, 76 SPC, 88 CIT, 83 RTE, 80 JMP, 79 RLS, 72 PBK, 77 RBK, 74 IBL, 63 RET, 81 STA, 83 INJ

CJ Terry was our starting TE for the last two years. The first year it seemed like he was going to have a nice career wearing the black and yellow. The second year, he didn't improve in the offseason at all and led the team in drops in the second half of the season, including on a few key third downs. When Terry saw that we had recruited a pair of TE he brought his concerns to coach Clark, who did little to assure him that he would be the starter; He would need to work hard and compete against the new players in the spring.

Terry decided to transfer, and selected Penn State which has a dearth of TE at the present time. He is projected to be their opening day starter.

Re: The Career of J.D. Clark (NCAA 14)

I missed a good bit over the last couple of weeks it seems like!

Solid, albeit sloppy win in the bowl game. Although it's good to finish the year out with a win, I'm sure the end of the season was frustrating with the loss to Michigan State and then playing one of your non-conference opponents in a non-BCS bowl - maybe it's just me, but I would've liked to play someone new and fresh in the bowl, especially when you're shut out of the biggest ones.

NCAA's CPU playcalling remains baffling at the end of games, regardless of the game's year - good to see the OC's idiocy didn't cost USC. Great uniform matchup between USC and LSU... really wish we would've gotten that game in 2003.

Love love love your season overviews. So much depth to everything and the synopsis is great - provides the perfect overview of how the season went. Definitely agree that 12 wins is pretty impressive for a "down" year.

Iowa's athletics website says the sack record is 42, so good call using that mark. Hoping that Khayman Chia reaches that numbers because of his name alone.

Joe wasn't kidding about this recruiting class - it is LOADED. Feel like you did well avoiding bust as well outside of Hernandez, which doesn't matter all that much with signing of Hayden Polk. Fitting that only Ohio State put together a better class - love the wrinkles you've added about Urban Meyer and the rivalry that's becoming.

I didn't realize Harkless had that low of an overall, and completely forgot you had Joshua Mack potentially waiting in the wings. Could you see Mack taking over the starting role this year? If so, does Harkless return to his package role or does he have any attributes that would allow him to help at another position?
