United Draw Chelsea in EFL Cup Quarter Finals

Manchester United will travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on December 22nd

Manchester, England – Manchester United has drawn Chelsea for a Quarter Final Matchup in the EFL Cup in tonight’s lottery. The game will be played December 22nd at Stamford Bridge, where United will have its first road trip of the League Cup, and Chelsea will host for the first time.

These two teams are slated to meet next month for their first Premier League clash. That game will take place on November 28th and will also be at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea won at Leicester City to open the tournament before handling Wolves 3-0 at Molineaux last night. Ben Chilwell has scored four of Chelsea’s five goals in the opening rounds of the tournament.

Manchester United, for their part, have scored ten goals, seven in their round three win against Portsmouth, and another three in last night’s thrilling win at Anfield, over Liverpool.

Chelsea has dominated the Premier League thus far remaining unbeaten in league play. The squad is still riding high after winning last years’ Champions League Final and seem poised to capture the Premier League crown this year. In league, they are led by scorers Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku, who have combined for fifteen goals this season. They’ll have to face Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored twice in last night’s comeback against Liverpool.

Kane, Son Carry Tottenham Past United

Tottenham Carried the Day at Home, Closing Out October with a Win

By Felix Short | October 30, 2021, 11:59 PM EST

Harry Kane took the lead in Premier League Goals Scored with two against United. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

London, England – Antonio Conte and his Tottenham squad defended their home turf today, defeating Manchester United 4-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. United and Tottenham stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane led the hype machine for this game as the two all-time goal scorers currently lead the Premier League with eight and seven goals respectively. Only one of those would score today, and it was he who carried the day.

In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo found himself on the bench to start the game. United were also without Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Raphaël Varane due to injury and minute management, but that didn’t hamper them out of the gate. United and Spurs battled in a slow-paced environment for much of the first half with neither team making their mark. This tempo led both teams to enter half without a score.

The action picked up in the second half however, and the game saw its first goal in the 51st minute when Giovani Lo Celso found Harry Kane for an acrobatic slam past David De Gea to give Tottenham the 1-0 lead. This immediately prompted United coach Thomas Walker to turn to his superstar, as Cristiano Ronaldo came in in the 53rd minute. It didn’t help as Chrstian Romero found Heung min Son for Tottenham’s second goal in the 56th minute. Down a pair, Ronaldo and the beleaguered United side steadied the ship, and cut the lead to one in the 74th minute when United’s high pressure defense led to a steal by Ronaldo, who caught Anthony Elanga streaking toward goal, who put the ball in the back of the net. Down one, the last fifteen minutes were tense, and United had their opportunities. In the 87th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo broke free and got a legitimate shot on goal off, but just missed the target, which prevented United from tying the game.

Tottenham was able to put it away just a moment later, on the counter attack as Heung min Son found his mate Harry Kane to give Kane the brace, and Tottenham the win in the 89th minute. Tottenham put an emphasis on their win in the 96th minute when Heung min Son found the net for the fourth and final goal, in a game that wasn’t nearly as lopsided as it appeared.

“This is a tough stadium to play in,” said United coach Thomas Walker after the game, “We were down, but I feel like we were resilient and showed a lot today in terms of how we can fight back when we have turbulence.”

With two goals today, Harry Kane took the lead for most goals in the Premier League this season with nine. After the game, Ronaldo and Kane shared congratulations to each other.

“It’s just special to be able to play at this level,” said Tottenham star Harry Kane after the game, “getting to battle guys like Cristiano, it’s just really the best of the best and it’s an honor to be able to do it.”

United fans will be disappointed in the result, but there was more to like in this game than they would acknowledge in the immediate aftermath. To begin, Anthony Elanga came off the bench and made an impact, and the 19-year-old is really starting to make a difference for this team. This was his third goal of the season, and Thomas Walker’s investment in him seem to really be paying off.

United fans will also take solace in the fact that both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba are expected to return for United’s mid-week game.

With the win, Tottenham rises to seventh in the Premier League with 16 points. United drop to 11th with their 14 points in hand.

Manchester United will host Young Boys during the week as they seek to clinch a Champions League Group Stage birth.

        Tottenham: 4
        Goal Scorers: Harry Kane (51'), Heung min Son (56'), Harry Kane (89'), Heung min Son (96');
Assists: Giovani Lo Celso, Christian Romero, Heung min Son

        Manchester United: 1
Goal Scorers: Anthony Elanga (74'); Assists: n/a

What I'm Hearing: Iqbal, Hanssen, Mellor

There is a lot of excitement about the crop of youngsters that make up the Under-23 squad

          By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / October 31, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Zidane Iqbal has been one of the key midfielders for United's Under-23 Squad this season (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

What I’m Hearing – Manchester United has one of the most celebrated youth academies in world soccer, having produced some of the legends of the game including the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Sir Bobby Charlton, Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville. Today, the youth academy is still an integral part of the lifeblood of United’s identity. With that in mind, here are some things I’m hearing about the youngsters.

Zidane Iqbal – Midfielder Zidane Iqbal has continued to impress for the U-23 squad and seems likely to receive his first senior team action at some point in this campaign. He has been a steady force for the United Youth Squad, providing solid box-to-box play. Under Thomas Walker’s new program, Iqbal has impressed with his improved work rate on both offense and defense. Iqbal was born in Manchester but has confirmed he will represent Iraq at the International Level. That opportunity may be coming soon as there are rumors that he will be called up by the Iraqi national team before much longer. 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for the Manchester United U-23 midfielder.

Daniel Hanssen – Less impressive has been United big summer youth signing, Daniel Hanssen. The Norwegian came to United with a £4.2 million price tag, yet he’s failed to show the true potential that many saw when he was with the Norwegian Youth Teams or at his previous academy, Lillestrøm. There could be very good reasons for this. Hanssen is still only 16 and won’t turn 17 until January. He’s now facing players that are 19-20-21 years old in the Premier League 2. He’s also away from home, and although United is now also the home to his older brother Ove, it must be a big transition. Still, he's failed to shine as a center-forward thus far, and United has moved him around a bit to other attacking positions. They feel good about the progress he’s made with his work rates, but they feel he still has a ways to go defensively. Hanssen has also yet to make a mark on the score sheet, failing to put the ball in the back of the net. He’s competing for minutes at the center-forward position with Charlie McNeill, Mateo Mejia, Julian Hahn, Nadir Naji and Adán Osorio, so Hanssen’s lack of production becomes more apparent with other options available.

D'Mani Mellor – One of those other options is D’Mani Mellor. Mellor was billed as a center-forward for much of his youth career, but he now finds himself as the older player on Manchester United’s Under-23 side. The 21-year-old must know that his chances of breaking in with United’s first team are slim at this point, and I’m told that he will be looking to move on from United during the January Transfer Window. Mellor did make one senior team appearance in the Europa league in 2019 but has yet to make it back. He’s also seen the number of attacking players with better potential eat into his minutes for the senior squad. The Manchester-native will likely need to look down to the League Two level or lower if he wants to continue his professional career.

              November Storylines: Manchester United

Can United make a title push in 2022?

By Felix Short | November 1, 2021, 7:30 AM EST

Can this United team take a step to Championship Contender? (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, United Kingdom – Ten games into the Premier League season, Manchester United stand 4-2-4, with only fourteen points. That’s good enough for eleventh in the Premier League, well behind Chelsea’s 28 first place points.

Why does Manchester United keep getting blown out?

United’s 4-2-4 record is worse than you may imagine. Despite a close draw at Leeds that should’ve been a United victory, there has been very little doubt in the results so far. This is especially true in United’s four losses, which include a 2-1 loss at Wolverhampton, but more worryingly a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa at home, and 5-0 and 4-1 road losses to Leicester City and Tottenham away from home. Why does this keep happening to Thomas Walker’s side? Part of the problem is that Thomas Walker has seemingly waived the white flag before the complete game was up in two of those contests, putting in deep bench players and taking off stars to rest them. Walker justified this plan by saying it would lead to better long-term results, but it seriously hampered his standing with the fans. Walker seemed to adjust a bit, bringing on Cristiano Ronaldo when his team went down 1-0 at Tottenham over the weekend. United has also struggled to hold leads late, giving up late goals to Leeds, Wolves, Newcastle, Liverpool and now Tottenham. Thomas Walker seems to be adjusting to both issues, often moving to a back five to hold leads late and bringing on more attacking talent when they trail. Is it just a case of Thomas Walker adjusting to the Premier League? That’s entirely possible, but Manchester United need to stop getting blown out if Thomas Walker wants to endear himself to the fans.

Are United title contenders in 2022?

It may be silly to ask, with United a daunting twelve points behind leaders Chelsea at this point, but it is worthy of discussion because United started the season as legitimate title contenders. But if you look around the league, many of the traditional heavy weights have struggled. The top four are currently held by Chelsea, Leicester City, West Ham, and Brighton. Aside from Chelsea, United seem to be right in line with many of the teams they were expected to compete with. Manchester City has had a disastrous start to the season. Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side is hanging around the top four discussion but have thus underperformed. I don’t think anyone believes that Brighton or West Ham will be able to hold this pace. This means there’s still plenty of opportunity for Manchester United to rise the table and take aim at the top spots. Of course, as of this writing they’re in eleventh and looking at a pretty big gap between them and the title.

Will United see any departures in the January window?

There’s been rumors of Juan Mata being unhappy with his play time. It begs the question of if United will see any departures this upcoming transfer window. Jesse Lingard was phenomenal for West Ham for the second half of last season on loan, but he has since been unable to establish himself regularly for Thomas Walker and United. He would certainly have value to any team looking to add an attacking player. Perhaps there is a fit for him on another team? His role seems to only be declining with the emergence of youngsters like Anthony Elanga, Amad, and Hannibal Mejbri. Dean Henderson was expecting to get an opportunity to be the starting keeper for United this season, but he’s been relegated to cup games after David De Gea found his form. His future is certainly a question mark if David De Gea has recaptured that his undisputed top spot. Nemanja Matić has only featured sparingly this season, and could be another guy that moves on, whether it be this January or next summer. And of course, Phil Jones, who is still only 29, has proven he is healthy again. Will he look to make a move somewhere he can find more minutes? All of these players are question marks and all could provide value for someone this January.

United to the Knock Out Stages

There was little drama in Manchester United's 4-0 thrashing of Young Boys that helped them clinch Group F

By Felix Short | November 3, 2021, 11:59 PM EST

Bruno Fernandes scored a brace as United clinched its birth in the round of sixteen. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United hosted Swiss-side BSC Young Boys on the fourth match day of the UEFA Champions’ League Group Stage on Wednesday night, defeated the Swiss champions 4-0. In the process, they welcomed back both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba to the squad and were able to clinch their spot in the Champions League Round of 16.

United must’ve been confident, having defeated Young Boys in Bern 3-1 on October 19th, and they felt no trepidation in coming out with their guns blazing tonight. United started the scoring in the 23rd minute when Marcus Rashford sped down the left side, beating the defense, crossing it, and finding Bruno Fernandes in front of goal for the tap in. Bruno Fernandes stole the show just minutes later when he took a high bouncing ball and shot off a screamer from outside the box into the top right corner of the net in the 26th minute. Young Boys Striker Jordan Pefok had an opportunity to get one back in the 30th minute, but his shot was rejected by the post, and United cruised through the rest of the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

United put the game away in the 65th minute when Paul Pogba set up Cristiano Ronaldo in the center of the box for an easy finish for the Portuguese legend. Young Boys almost benefitted off a United mistake in the 68th minute when Harry Maguire’s deflection almost trickled into the back of the net, before being chased down and punted by Victor Lindelöf. However, the Swiss team just couldn’t keep their composure, and really fell apart around that time. Young Boys midfielder Meschack Elia was thrown off with a red card in the 70th minute and the outcome was certain. United youngster Anthony Elanga put the exclamation point on the victory in the 85th minute, when Ronaldo pulled the Young Boys center-backs out of position, allowing for Elanga to streak past for a one-v-one with the keeper. Elanga put it away and United melted away the 4-0 victory that clinched them a ticket to the knockout stages of Europe’s biggest tournament.

“We really played well today,” said United Boss Thomas Walker, “I think it was important for us because we came in with a lot of confidence and for us to translate that confidence into a dominating win was important. And to do that as a team was even more important.”

Bruno Fernandes went down as the man of the match after a dominating performance coming off his shoulder injury. That week off did him wonders as he looked more comfortable in Thomas Walker’s system than he has at any point so far this season. United’s Press Team revealed that Fernandes’ rating was higher than any player other than Cristiano Ronaldo had achieved all season.

“It felt good to be back out there,” was all the Portuguese midfielder had to say after his two-goal performance.

Anthony Elanga scored again and has now scored off the bench in back-to-back games. Many fans questioned the amount of game time he was receiving earlier this season, but it is becoming clear that Thomas Walker had a plan for Elanga and that Elanga is starting to execute on that plan. Elanga now has four goals and an assist in eight appearances for United this season.

Also, of note, seems to be the emergence of Fred as the top holding midfielder for Thomas Walker’s side. Fred has been very inconsistent and has struggled with turnovers since his arrival at Old Trafford, but it appears that Walker and his system are getting the best out of Fred, who has turned into a real force for United this season. Fred has now started five games in a row for Walker and he appears to have gained control of the narrative at that position.

Raphaël Varane, Luke Shaw and David De Gea were all stand out performers today as well.

Manchester United will face Manchester City this weekend in a Premier League match up. They can rest easy for their last two Champions’ League Group Stage Games, having already clinched the top spot. Young Boys will need to do work in their final two games against Villarreal and Atalanta if they want to advance in this competition.

                      Rumour: United 'Seriously' Considering Osimhen

Manchester United is determined to sign a young striker next summer and Victor Osimhen is on their short list

                      By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / November 5, 2021, 7:45 AM EST

Victor Osimhen has been excellent for Napoli so far this season. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Rumours – Sources tell RedDevilUnited.com that Manchester United is seriously considering putting in a bid for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen next summer. The striker has emerged as one of the premier young attacking players in the game. He established that reputation under Thomas Walker at Lille just two years ago. Osimhen only played one season for Walker, but the Nigerian international put up 18 goals in 38 games that season, before being bought by Napoli for a club record £57.3 million.

Manchester United have made it clear that they’re going to be looking for a young striker next summer, and while they’ll be in the game for both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, they’ll be looking for one regardless of if they strike out on the two big fish. While Cristiano Ronaldo has seemingly become ageless, United’s depth at that position doesn’t look great moving forward. Edinson Cavani, the current number two, is set to leave as a free agent next summer, while Anthony Martial has talked about leaving United in the past. Even still, Martial has been playing more on the wing this season for Thomas Walker’s side. And of course, Cristiano Ronaldo will turn 38 next season, so for as consistent as he has been this season, it seems reasonable to assume that he will play less games each year from here on out.

Osimhen has excellent speed which he has used to devastating effect in both Ligue Un and Serie A, and he should translate well to the Premier League. His 6’1” frame and vertical ability should also make him dangerous on crosses and corners. At 23, Osimhen has really developed into a solid all-around player that will be an effective striker for years to come.

Napoli shelled out €70 million just over a year ago for him and he is under contract for the foreseeable future. He scored ten goals in 24 league games over the last season for Napoli and has been electric so far this season, scoring six goals in only eleven games. With that kind of production at his back, Osimhen seems like a candidate to go for £100 million if he is to be bought next summer. For that kind of cash, would United be interested? This will definitely be a wait and see, but United seem determined to sign a young striker this coming summer and Osimhen will be high on that list.

City didn't come to play in the Manchester Derby and United made them pay

Manchester, England – One of the least consequential Manchester derby’s in years took place tonight, as Manchester City drove to Old Trafford to introduce Thomas Walker to the rivalry. Manchester United and Manchester City have both had disappointing starts to their Premier League season with each sitting on 14 points through ten games and seeded 10th and 11th in the league table. Many thought this game would spark the winner to get back in the conversation for Top Four and if that were to happen, Manchester United would be the beneficiary.

United and City both entered the game with rosters filled with stars, and the game was incredibly close to start the game. Kevin de Bruyne showed his class on three separate occasions putting tremendous shots on goal. David De Gea was up for it though, and the two giants battled it out until the 29th minute. That’s when forward Kyle Walker fouled Bruno Fernandes outside the penalty box, and was given a red card for the infraction. Down a man, City completely fell apart. Ronaldo just missed the ensuing penalty kick, but United would get on the board five minutes later when Aaron Wan-Bissaka hit a beautiful through ball to Cristiano Ronaldo down the right flank, who crossed it to Bruno Fernandes for the tap in in the 34th minute.

Manchester City was shellshocked and they wouldn’t recover. In the 41st minute, Paul Pogba hit a ball over the center-backs head. City defender Rúben Dias put himself in tremendous position, as expected, but just missed timed his jump and let the ball sail over him. Edinson Cavani took advantage of the mishap and trailed off the helping defense before firing a shot across his body into the top net of goal to double the lead. Manchester City desperately needed halftime, but it was still a long way off. In the 44th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo caught the City defense sleeping on a streaking Fred. Ronaldo played a world-class through ball from the half way line near the sideline past the City defense and in a spot for Fred to run to it. City goalkeeper Ederson misjudged Fred, and expecting a pass off to Bruno Fernandes on his left, moved out of position, allowing Fred to hammer it into the back of the net. Still City wouldn’t see the locker rooms, as Cristiano Ronaldo again takes the ball down the right flank before crossing it and finding the head of Bruno Fernandes. Ederson was able to get a hand on it, but only to deflect it off the goalpost and back across the goal line. United punished City for their inability to adjust, and they took a 4-0 lead into halftime.

United kept their foot on the pressure as the second half commenced, and Manchester City found no spirit in the locker room. Edinson Cavani hit a through ball to Bruno Fernandes who found a streaking Paul Pogba in the 51st minute to continue the embarrassment before United finally eased off the pressure. That didn’t stop them from scoring again late in the game, as a defeated and uninterested Manchester City gave up a goal to Anthony Elanga in the 86th minute before the scoring finally ended for the night. In a game in which bragging rights and momentum were on the line, Manchester United earned both in spades.

“We fell apart,” said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, “We really didn’t have fight or spirit, and in a big game, a big atmosphere like this, it’s just not good enough.”

While fans have bemoaned some of the decisions and results that Manchester United have put out under Thomas Walker, his early success against the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola has to be inspiring.

“We attacked tonight,” said Walker after the game, “I liked our physicality, I liked our defense. They started well and our defense held firm so that when we finally broke through, we were able to capture all the momentum. High intensity, high pressure, high talent, and when you have all those things going right, you end up with scores like tonight.”

Bruno Fernandes seems to be settling into the new system well as of late. After an uninspiring start to his season, he’s not netted a brace in each of United’s last two games. His playmaking ability has never been in question, but his adapting to a different style under Walker has forced him to play differently. It appears that he is turning the corner on making an impact.

Youngster Anthony Elanga seems to be paying off on all the early playing Thomas Walker gave him earlier this season. Tonight was Elanga’s ninth appearance on the season, and he was able to put through his third goal. Elanga has now scored off the bench in three straight games for United and has propelled himself firmly into the conversation as a high caliber player with a bright future for United.

Cristiano Ronaldo will go down as man of the match for his four assists, which now give him the lead in the Premier League with seven. David De Gea also had a marvelous game, especially in the early going, with six saves. Victor Lindelöf, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphaël Varane and Scott McTominay all played well as well.

With the win, Manchester United moves up to 8th place in the league table with 17 points. Man City falls from 10th to 11th with 14 points after eleven games. Manchester City will next host Everton after the international break, whereas United will head to Vicarage Road to face Watford on November 20th.

United's Top Stars All Look Poised to Qualify for the World Cup This Window

Manchester, England – Manchester United has a number of star players headed out on international break during the upcoming window. World Cup Qualifying is in full swing for next summer’s world cup in Qatar, and many of the confederations have qualifying book marked for this window.

In Europe, UEFA will be hosting its final three qualifying match ups for the first round. The ten teams that top their groups will have punched their ticket to the big dance by the end of this window. For United, that includes France, who has called in Raphaël Varane and the surprise inclusion of Anthony Martial, who has been away from the national team for a while. United goalkeeper David De Gea will lead the Spanish national.

The English team will, of course, feature a number of United stars as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all got the call. And for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot all received the call up. All four of these teams appear to be in great position to top their group and find themselves in the World Cup.

Less sure is Scotland, who will be playing for a spot in the UEFA Playoff. If they finish second in their group, a group topped by Denmark, they will have to make their way through the UEFA playoff. They’ve called in Scott McTominay to help secure that spot.

In South America, three United players have been called to service. November marks the return of Fred to the Brazilian national squad after his recent run of good form. Brazil clinched their spot in the World Cup last window so that team will have less to play for and could be experimenting with different players for their remaining games.

Uruguay has once again called in Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri, as they aim to keep marching on their path toward the world cup.

CAF will not be hosting games this window, as the confederation prepares to host the African Cup of Nations in January in Cameroon. At that tournament, United is expected to lose Hannibal Mejbri to Tunisia and Eric Bailly to the Ivory Coast. There is also an outside chance that they lost Amad to the Ivory Coast as well.

This window begins on November 9th and will end November 19th.

Björn Hardley and Hannibal Mejbri are expected to resume training with the senior squad following the international break

Björn Hardley made his senior team debut against Portsmouth last month (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

What I’m Hearing – Sources tell RedDevilUnited.com that Manchester United intends to have Hannibal Mejbri and Björn Hardley train with the first team following the international window. Sources say the club has been very impressed with the progress they’ve made this season and they are eager to reward their efforts with time with the senior club.

Both players spent about a week with the senior team last month, as the team prepared to host third-tier Portsmouth F.C. in United’s opening match of the EFL Cup. Both players made appearances off the bench in that game, with Hannibal Mejbri scoring in the 75th minute. Mejbri in particular provided a spark offensively, enough so that United boss Thomas Walker gave him minutes in the club’s next match against Aston Villa. Both players returned to the Under-23’s after those games, but it was enough of a taste for fans and manager alike to be intrigued.

United is scheduled to play Villarreal at Old Trafford on match day five of the Champions’ League group stage on November 23rd. United has already clinched top billing in their group, so it seems likely that that match up features a number of younger players, including Mejbri and Hardley.
