    Transfer Window Preview: Manchester United

What will Manchester United do during the January transfer window to help them win a trophy?

By Felix Short | January 1, 2022, 7:30 AM EST

Will Jadon Sancho's Injury Force United to Change Their Transfer Window Plans? (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United enters the new year in third place in the Premier League, within striking distance of league leaders Liverpool, in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League, with a promising outlook on advancing, and with a team that is seemingly improving under first-year manager Thomas Walker. Things look bright for United after an impressive December that saw them win seven of nine games and move up into the Champions League qualifying zone in the league table. But now, as the calendar turns to 2022, the Transfer Window is open, and it’s fair to wonder if United will be heavy players in the market. Let’s take a look at what United may be thinking:

    New Signings

With a deep Champions League run on the table and a chance at the Premier League title, Manchester United may be in the hunt to add the type of talent that could carry them to a major trophy this season. Entering the campaign, United had concerns at the holding midfielder position, but those have seemingly been answered by the improvements of Fred and Scott McTominay in recent months. Thomas Walker has reportedly been less than thrilled with the options at center-back, but with four legitimate options, making four legitimate wages, it seems unlikely that United will add a center-back without jettisoning one off.

Instead, they may find they have a more demanding need for an attacking player. Last summer they spent big to bring Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford in the hopes that he would solve their concerns on the wing for the next several years. Sancho failed to make the huge impact that was expected of him, but worse, he also found himself with a torn ACL that will keep him out for the rest of the season. The emergence of teenagers Amad, Anthony Elanga and Hannibal Mejbri do lighten the need to add an attacking player, but Anthony Elanga’s recent shoulder injury has shown United just how perilously thin they are in attack. Behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, United will be relying on a lot of inexperienced players to close out this season. Perhaps adding a player this month that can, at the very least, bolster their depth would be prudent.

    Departures

For all the concern over the lack of depth up front, United do have some veterans that are struggling to get minutes. Perhaps none is more obvious than the 33-year-old Juan Mata. The former Chelsea and Spain star has reached the later years of his career and doesn’t have the obvious fit that Thomas Walker is looking for. He’s only made one appearance this season and has on multiple occasions made it known that he isn’t happy with his situation. Mata is one to watch closely, as his contract extends until the summer of 2023, and he may be looking to get out now.

Dean Henderson is another player who seemingly could be on the move. This was supposed to be the season that Henderson emerged as United’s top keeper, but instead Walker has gone with David De Gea for every meaningful minute. Henderson and United seem to be at crossroads and a decision on Henderson’s future seems certain to come soon. Whether Henderson remains as United second stringer until the summer, or he moves to a club in desperate need for a goalkeeper now, is something to keep an eye on this transfer window.

Other players who could be looking for bigger roles elsewhere are Donny van de Beek, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matić, and Diogo Dalot. van de Beek and Dalot are both players that other teams may take an interest in as young, up-and-comers who have seemingly failed to impress at United, but who were impressive enough in previous stops. Jones and Matić are established veterans who may just need a new opportunity.

    Loans

Manchester United has eleven players on loan in England, Spain, Scotland and Italy. Will United recall any of them in order to help with their depth concerns on the wing? Tahith Chong at Birmingham City and Facundo Pellistri at Alavés are both players that could come in and give them minutes in attack. Giving the opportunity to one of those players may be able to save United a healthy transfer sum.

On the other hand, there are a number of younger talents that seem ready to make the jump out of the academy and into senior-level soccer. D’Mani Mellor, Shola Shoretire, Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage, and Reece Devine are all youngsters that seem to be ready for the next step. Can Manchester United find them a healthy opportunity for them to continue their development? That is something to keep an eye on this month.

Confirmed: United Buy Teenage Keeper Dave Howie

Manchester United's First Buy of the Transfer Window Was Scottish 16-Year-Old Dave Howie for £3.8M

Manchester United's First Order of Business in the Transfer Window Was to Buy a 16-year-old Goalkeeper (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Confirmed – Manchester United have agreed to terms with Scotland’s Dundee United for the purchase of 16-year-old Goalkeeper Dave Howie.

This signing is a microcosm of the definitive nature of current transfer policy at Manchester United in the Thomas Walker era. The transfer fee will reportedly be worth £3.8 million and sources tell RedDevilUnited that Howie will receive a three-and-a-half-year contract. He becomes the fifth teenager in the last three years to have been bought by United for a multi-million-pound transfer fee.

This strategy of identifying, scouting, and buying high potential teenagers is the new normal for Manchester United. There’s a reason this deal was completed just after midnight on the first day of the window. Instead of getting a winger to replace Jadon Sancho, or perhaps looking to bolster their center-back situation, United spent the days leading up to the window ensuring they get the signature of a 16-year-old goalkeeper who is years away from being first team ready.

As for Howie, he became a minor story in Scotland last month when he was forced into the starting role for Dundee United, his hometown club, after starter Benjamin Siegrist was injured. In his three starts in net, Howie produced three clean sheets for Dundee United, who won one and drew two. One of those two draws, their game at Aberdeen on December 14th, was attended by United manager Thomas Walker and Head of Youth Scouting Joey Johnson.

It is believed that after the game, both Walker and Johnson met with Howie, his representatives, and his family to discuss a potential move to Old Trafford. Evidently Howie and his family were sold by the plan that Walker and company presented, as negotiations between Manchester United and Dundee United picked up shortly thereafter.

Manchester United was first turned on to the kid by Dylan Levitt, another Manchester United player who is spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Dundee United. Reportedly, Levitt informed the staff that a 16-year-old had beaten out two veterans to earn the back-up goalkeeper job. Head of Youth Scouting Joey Johnson reportedly made the trip to Dundee at least three times to watch Howie work out and train. What they saw convinced them that Howie had the right stuff.

“They love him” a source told RedDevilUnited on how the United board view Howie as a prospect, “Howie grew up a field player, he’s got the footwork of a center-back. They love that. He’s really good with his feet for a keeper, really that will be one of the standout features of his. But he also has extraordinary quickness, and this is why they believe he will become a really advanced goalkeeper despite only having played the position for about two years. He’s lighting quick. Long-term potential, [the board] thinks Ederson.”

Howie is expected to join Manchester United’s Academy and play for the Under-18’s as he gets acclimated to life in England. He will join Bruno Schmitt as a second well-regarded teenage goalkeeper currently developing at Carrington in United's Youth Program. United bought Schmitt from VfB Stuttgart’s Academy in the Summer of 2020 for £1 million.

Howie’s listed height at Dundee United was 6-foot-1, which is on the smaller side for a high-level keeper, but United's scouts believe that Howie has the quickness and reach to still be an effective, if not elite, shot stopper at that height. He will turn just seventeen in April, so there’s also the chance that he continues growing.

Manchester, England – Manchester United entered the new year with a fresh perspective, having climbed eight spots in the month of December to third in the Premier League. If they continued that pace for the remainder of the season, they would have a legitimate chance to win the Premier League title. But for that to happen, they would have to take care of business in games like Saturday’s home match up with 8th-place Wolves. Thomas Walker’s team did just that, taking a mediocre performance and turning it into a 1-0 win, and taking the three accompanying points as well.

But Wolves played well in this game and kept United in check for much of it with physicality. That was on display immediately when Rúben Neves put a thunderous hit on Bruno Fernandes in the second minute of the game that kept Fernandes wobbly for much of the first half. The first chance of the game came in the 12th minute, when Cristiano Ronaldo side-stepped his defender to earn a chance, but Wolves Keeper John Ruddy was up to the task. Then it was Wolverhampton that began to put the pressure on the game. From the 15th to the 25th minute, Wolves seemed in control of the game and were putting consistent pressure on the United defense. Their best chance came in the 18th minute when João Mountinho found himself with a point-blank shot that directly hit David De Gea’s knee and bounced away.

United settled into the game following Wolves ten-minute outburst, and would find another opportunity in the 29th, when Cristiano Ronaldo broke free on the counter. His shot was once again blocked by Ruddy, and the game picked up a back and forth feel. João Moutinho had another opportunity in the 36th minute that was saved by De Gea, and Raúl Jimenez found his first real chance in the 43rd minute, also saved by De Gea. The game entered intermission at a standstill, with many observers giving Wolves credit for their play.

Concerned about the pressure that Wolves were mounting, United switched formations at halftime to a back-five, thats purpose was to shut down the Wolves attack. It worked well as Wolves wouldn’t get a legitimate chance in the second half despite controlling possession and the flow of the game. United settled into a low-block and elected to hit on the counter. It almost worked in the 67th minute when Ronaldo again broke free for a great chance, but this too was blocked by John Ruddy. This time, by the skin on his fingertips.

Then the decisive moment occurred. Wolves midfielder Max Kilman made a completely unnecessary slide tackle on Ronaldo that the referee considered too serious to let pass. Kilman was given a yellow card, his second of the game, forcing Wolves to try and finish with a ten-man squad. This 75th minute mental lapse would decide the game for Wolves. It wouldn’t take United long to strike. In the 80th minute, Fred stole the ball from Wolves Striker Raúl Jimenez near the United box, initiating the counterattack. Nobody picked up Fred, who drove the ball into Wolves territory, before finding Ronaldo sprinting down the middle. In front of net, with a one-v-one with the keeper, John Ruddy could do nothing against Cristiano Ronaldo as the deadlock was broken by Ronaldo’s 17th goal of the Premier League season.

The ejection of Kilman proved to be the pivotal moment in this game, as there’s no way United’s 80th minute counterattack would’ve been successful if Kilman were on the pitch. His absence also slowed Wolves attack to a halt without his outlet, and United drained the rest of the game to take a 1-0 victory at home.

“I’m proud of our guys,” said United manager Thomas Walker after the game, “We didn’t have our best stuff today, but we were able to regroup at halftime, shift our priorities, rethink our plan and were able to execute in the second half to get a win. I’m really happy with De Gea and our defense who played well. They kept us in the game when Wolves had the momentum and were putting on the pressure. Their performance today was critical.”

Fred was named man of the match for his assist, as well as his decisive play in the midfield that helped United’s defense maintain a clean sheet. He has really blossomed this season in the holding midfielder role and has become someone that Thomas Walker relies on to deliver. He did just that today and earns man of the match honors for his effort.

After a hectic last month, in which United played ten games in 32 days, they now get a week off. Their next opponent will be Newcastle at St. James’ Park in Round 3 of the FA Cup. United will return to Premier League play on Friday, January 14th at Aston Villa. Wolves will host Burnley in next weekend’s FA Cup match up before hosting Southampton the following weekend. With the win, United stay in third in the league table with 31 points. Wolves stay in the 8th with 33 points.

Confirmed: Mellor Moving to Port Vale

EFL2-side Port Vale will become the new home of United academy product D'Mani Mellor

                By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / January 2, 2022, 7:30 AM EST

D'Mani Mellor leaves United as the longest tenured member of the Academy (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Confirmed – United Academy player D’Mani Mellor is officially leaving the club after thirteen years. The 21-year-old joined United’s Academy at the age of eight and has been with the club ever since. Mellor will be leaving United to join Port Vale F.C., a fourth-tier side, on a loan-to-buy deal.

Mellor turned 21 in September and was the oldest field player in United’s Academy. He had been a center-forward for years, but the emergence of younger players at that position for the Under-23’s dictated both a loss of playing time and a change to a more versatile role.

Mellor was scheduled to go out on loan for the year this summer, as a move to Salford was in the works, but fell through at the last moment because he picked up a minor injury. Staying in Manchester for the last five months seemingly doomed his United career, as the new staff has clearly decided that he will not be a part of their plans.

Technically speaking, this is a loan-to-buy move, but Port Vale has the obligation to buy Mellor for £75,000 on July 1st, and Manchester United has the right to buy-back Mellor for £1,000,000 on July 1st, 2023.

A source indicated to RedDevilUnited that Mellor was not going to be an instant impact player at the EFL2 level, but that he would grow into a legitimate starter at that level and perhaps higher up. However, this source indicated that the United staff do not feel he has a Premier League future, much less one with the caliber of club that Manchester United aspires to be.

Mellor made one appearance for United’s senior team in 2019 but has since been passed by younger attackers like Anthony Elanga, Amad, Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire. Without any standout measurables, it is probably fitting for Mellor to leave now if he wishes to have a professional career.

Mellor leaves as the longest tenured member of United’s academy.

In a surprise twist, United and CA Osasuna have agreed to a six month loan for Ove Hanssen

                    By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / January 4, 2022, 7:30 AM EST

Ove Hanssen was a pleasant surprise following his arrival from Lillestrøm SK this summer (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Confirmed – In a surprise move, Manchester United has come to an agreement with Spain’s CA Osasuna over the loan of 17-year-old Ove Hanssen. The decision was made after Hanssen spent the last two weeks training with the first team with the idea that he may be able to provide depth for United after the injury to Jadon Sancho and the departure of Hannibal Mejbri to AFCON.

The Norwegian international failed to give the United coaching staff the confidence that he could hold up in the Premier League. A source told RedDevilUnited that instead of showing Thomas Walker and his staff that he was capable of first team minutes, he showed that he was too small for the very physical Premier League.

Having shown enough to prove that he belongs above the Under-23, Premier League 2-level, United went to look for a league where his raw skills and vision could be tested against men, but where the physical demands weren’t as great. Ove’s 5-foot-5 height, paired with his underdeveloped physical stature, made it clear to the United staff that he was going to be bullied in England.

The move to Spain could prove to be a good one for Ove, as La Liga is known more for its technical level of play, instead of its physically demanding nature. With CA Osasuna, he should have a chance to play against men without getting bullied in quite the same way. His reported vision and technical ability should fit well there.

As for CA Osasuna, they’ve been devastated by injuries in their attack, and are currently 18th in the La Liga table, sitting in the relegation zone. They’re a cash-strapped team with a huge need for attacking players, so Hanssen’s move should give him the chance to earn legitimate playing time.

Shola Shoretire has been advanced for his age since his pre-teen years (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

What I'm Hearing – Sources tell RedDevilUnited that Manchester United Under-23’s Björn Hardley and Shola Shoretire will spend some time training with the first team in an attempt to reinforce a squad that has recently lost Jadon Sancho to injury, and Hannibal Mejbri and Eric Bailly to the African Cup of Nations tournament.

Shoretire is an attacking player, generally played on the wing, who should adequately fill the roster hole left by Mejbri. Hardley, a center-back, should do the same for the vacancy left by Eric Bailly. Neither player is expected to play a significant role in meaningful games for United this month but could make appearances off the bench if called upon.

United’s forward depth took a big hit in recent weeks, and while United should be okay with Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Amad on the wings, having a bit more depth will be important. If Shoretire can fill the role, then United may not need to add any players this window. Sources inside the offices of Manchester United indicate that there have been discussions about both buying a new player this window, or potentially recalling a winger from loan.

United’s first attempt to bolster their forward depth from within came just two weeks ago, when Ove Hanssen tried to make the transition. That apparently didn’t work out, as Hanssen and United agreed to a loan move just yesterday that will send Hanssen to Spain for the rest of this season.

Hardley has made three bench appearances for United’s senior squad this season, against Portsmouth F.C. in the EFL Cup and in United’s two Champions League games that followed their clinching of their place in the knockout stages. Shoretire made his senior team debut last February as an 88th minute substitute against Newcastle. He also appeared in a 0-0 draw in a Europa League contest with Real Sociedad four days earlier.

Hardley has worn #64 this season, while Shoretire is expected to don the #47.

Barcelona Agrees to Buy Jesse Lingard

Manchester United made the surprising decision to accept an offer from Barcelona for Lingard

Manchester, England – Manchester United and Barcelona have come to terms on the transfer of Jesse Lingard from Old Trafford to Camp Nou. The surprising move comes as a desperate Barcelona team looks to add talent to a team seemingly devoid of it, to help bolster a newly hired Xavi as they attempt to return to relevance.

The more surprising decision was that of United’s to let Lingard go. United is in something of a precarious position itself in attack, as they’ve recently lost Jadon Sancho to a torn ACL. With Lingard now gone, the team will need major contributions from Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and a host of teenagers to produce for them up top.

The transfer fee will be worth £15.4 million (€18.6 million) and will include a one-and-a-half-year contract extension for Lingard, who’s current contract was set to expire at the end of this season. Lingard would’ve been free to choose any destination next year, but the opportunity to join one of Spain’s biggest clubs was too great to pass over for the 29-year-old.

The final price was significantly less than what United could’ve gotten if they had sold Lingard to West Ham in the summer.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Jesse,” said United manager Thomas Walker, “He’s a great player, and we’ll miss him. His presence, his work ethic. He’ll do great things for Barcelona, and I know he’s really excited for a new challenge.”

Walker’s quotes undermine the severity of dissatisfaction Jesse Lingard has felt over the last six months. He spent last spring on loan at West Ham and electrified the West London crowds by scoring nine goals in just sixteen games. West Ham reportedly offered £25 million to keep Lingard permanently, but United’s board refused, believing that Lingard had rediscovered his talent.

Thomas Walker and his staff didn’t agree, relegating Lingard to a smaller role so far this season. He’s made nine appearances, scoring one goal, and being credited with three assists for Walker, appearing mostly in United’s less important games. His game time was expected to expand with the Jadon Sancho injury, but United’s decision to let Lingard leave now indicates that wasn’t going to be the case.

While Lingard has behaved professionally in public, behind the scenes there had been serious dissatisfaction shown by Lingard’s agent and circle. Lingard seemed destined to reject any talks of a contract extension and was set to leave the club in July. The fact that his agent was able to orchestrate a deal out sooner is only further evidence of the deep level of discontent Lingard felt.

Now, able to put Old Trafford in the rearview mirror, he will join a Barcelona team that is in desperate need of attacking options. Barcelona currently sit 7th in the La Liga table and are seemingly determined to support new head man Xavi in any way they can.

“We like Lingard. He’s a good player,” said Xavi this morning, “We think he will make our team better. Certainly.”

Lingard will join Pierre Emerick-Aubamayang, Adama Traoré and Ferran Torres as the four attackers Barcelona brought in from Premier League teams to bolster their offense. They’ve struggled deeply with lack of talent and untimely injuries, specifically to Ousmane Dembélé. Memphis Depay has been their only consistent option in attack this season but adding these four players in the first week of the transfer window indicates that they are serious about improving the situation.

Barcelona reportedly had to fend off Juventus, who was also interested in Lingard.

In his career, Lingard has appeared in 285 games and scored 55 goals. This departure will mark a bitter end to a relationship between player and club that began when Lingard was seven years old. Lingard won the FA Youth Cup, Premier League, and FA Cup with United in his time with the Red Devils.

Newcastle upon Tyne, England – Manchester United boss Thomas Walker clearly elected to keep the team’s focus on the Premier League title chase, and probably also the Champions League, instead of being distracted by the oldest cup competition in the world. The lineup he sent out certainly indicated that he and his team had a cool nonchalance about an early elimination in the FA Cup. That wasn’t to be though, as United, for the second time in as many weeks, went to St. James’ Park and delivered a win for their fans.

“I’m really proud of our young guys,” said Walker after the game, “They really played their butts off. I wanted to challenge them to be tough. To be resilient. They answered the call and then some. Some of these guys have really built themselves into first team, first choice players. Seeing the results and the progress and the momentum they’ve built. It’s really cool. It’s really fun. It’s always fun to see hard work pay off. They deserve moments like these.”

That doesn’t mean it was easy for United. In fact, much like in their Boxing Day match two weeks ago, Newcastle was the better team early. That culminated in Newcastle center-forward Callum Wilson getting the first good chance of the day in the 11th minute, when his shot was deflected not by Dean Henderson, but by the right post. But also like in that first game, United earned some chances as well. On the counterattack, Anthony Elanga put the first shot up for United in the 23rd minute. That shot was high, but it opened Newcastle up a tad. In the 29th minute, Bruno Fernandes had another chance on the counter. With a defender on him, Bruno put the ball on goal, but that shot was blocked by Newcastle Keeper Karl Darlow.

Then again, it was Newcastle that scored first in their last match up and would do so again today. In the 32nd minute, United’s defenders were pulled way out of position, allowing Elliot Anderson to swoop in and find Callum Wilson for a tap in. Harry Maguire looked the fool at first, and he was a step too slow, but it was Victor Lindelöf and Nemanja Matić who were nowhere to be seen. It was truly a bizarre defensive sequence for United.

Fortunately for the Red Devils, the shock got them going in the right direction. Minutes later, on the high press, Bruno Fernandes intercepted a pass, then quickly transitioned the ball to Anthony Elanga. Elanga put the ball in to Anthony Martial. The final pass was slightly deflected by Newcastle defender Remi Savage, but that deflection only served to give Martial a cleaner shot on goal, which he put away. 35 minutes into this game and it was tied at one. It would remain that way into the half time intermission.

It took both teams a bit to get back going in the second half, but the action picked up again in the 62nd minute when United took a 2-1 lead. Alex Telles, on the counter, found Bruno Fernandes who drove at the defense. Fernandes pulled Anthony Martial’s man out of the play, then made a quick chip pass into Martial in front of net. With no defender, Martial was able to blow it by Darlow for the goal. But Newcastle had a response just minutes later when Diogo Dalot lost track of Allan Saint-Maximin, who blew past Dalot, for a chance in the 69th minute. Callum Wilson found him streaking and Saint-Maximin didn’t miss, tying the game at two.

The key moment arrived in the 77th minute when Alex Telles took over the moment, and the game. From a back five, Telles found space to advance the ball. He was not picked up by the Newcastle defense, so he kept going, cutting inside. It wasn’t until the final level of the defense did Newcastle come to try and stop Telles, who had already dribbled into the box and fired it into the top right corner of the net. This gave United the decisive 3-2 lead. It was the best moment from Telles all season and one of the more impressive individual plays the FA Cup will see this year. Still, Newcastle did produce a single chance to tie the game in the 83rd minute when Miguel Almirón found space and took the shot. That ball was saved by Dean Henderson and United were able to close out the game, earning passage to the next round of the FA Cup.

Anthony Martial was named man of the match for his two-goal performance. In a cup game that didn’t feature Cristiano Ronaldo, Martial was able to shine in a way we haven’t seen much this season.

17-year-old Shola Shoretire made his season debut in the 63rd minute. Shoretire has been training with the first team in recent days in order to help the team survive the absences of Jadon Sancho and Hannibal Mejbri.

With the win, Manchester United will advance to Round 4 of the FA Cup. The draw for that round will be held tomorrow, but United can expect to play on January 22nd. They will next be in action on Friday, January 14th when will travel to Birmingham to face Aston Villa. Newcastle will host Watford the next day.

                              Newcastle: 2
Goal Scorers: Callum Wilson (32'), Allan Saint-Maximin (69'); Assists: Elliott Anderson, Callum Wilson

Manchester United draw Newport County in FA Cup

Newport County will be the first fourth-tier team United has played since January 2018

Manchester, England – Manchester United drew League Two side Newport County in this afternoon’s FA Cup draw. The meeting will take place on January 22nd at Newport County’s Rodney Parade Stadium. This will be Manchester United’s first time facing a League Two team since January 2018.

The fourth-tier side has managed to play five games in the first three rounds of the FA Cup. In round one, they hosted Crawley, tying 1-1. They defeated Crawley 2-1 on the road in the replay. In Round 2, they defeated Walsall at Rodney Parade, 1-0. In Round 3, they were selected to face Fleetwood. They were again selected to host, tying 1-1 in the first match up. Newport County won at Fleetwood, 2-1, in the replay.

Needless to say, Manchester United represents a significant step up in competition for Newport County. Newport County has been led by Scot Bennett and Alex Fisher, who have each scored twice in this tournament. Goalkeeper Joe Day has maintained two clean sheets.

As for United, they were led in their first FA Cup victory by Anthony Martial’s brace, leading to a 3-2 win at Newcastle. Thomas Walker’s side showed no hesitance to play a young lineup that had every chance to lose against a fellow Premier League side on the road. It can be expected that the 22nd’s match up with Newport County will also feature some young players that Walker wants to get a look at.

Newport County is in the promotional playoff zone in the English fourth tier.
