Last years NHL season was shortened, but this year playoffs don't start until May 2nd. My assumption is around that time or EA might wait till the end of the playoffs to release it.

NHL 19 & 20 came late April to EA Play. Not much pre-marketing happened, they just released them and tweeted same time.

For NHL 22 late April or early May must be release day for EA Play.

For the last four games that EA put on EA Play, only Madden got a pre-EA Play announcement and that was two day before it went up. Madden got put up there almost exactly 6 months after it came out. That date for NHL would have been last week.

The good news is that NHL 22 (for PS5) was 19.99 on Amazon two days ago and now it's 14.99. So they're trying to get the last drop out of sales, so I think it could be this week?

I wish they would release a schedule, but it doesn't really help their sales if people know it'll be free in like 3 days.

I want to try NHL20. I can only get it if I sign up for EA Play. If I do a monthly subscription and cancel after first month, I can no longer play the game correct?

Correct, it is a subscription service. Meaning you'd need to be currently subscribed to access its benefits. So you could sign up for a month and try it out and then see if you want to keep it after that? It'd be like renting a game from Blockbuster! (reference will vary depending upon your age)
