After a stretch of scoring just a dozen runs over the last six games (and still managing to go 3-3 in that stretch), the Royals pounded out six homeruns in a 12-7 victory over the Mariners to open a three-game series on the West Coast. Kansas City did hold a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but Brady Singer surrendered four hits, six earned runs, a walk, and a hit batsman before getting pulled for lefty Gabe Speier, who promptly got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a groundball out.
It's the latest outing in a string of bad ones for the former first-rounder, as he's been relegated to a bullpen role as the season has began. Fellow righty Jackson Kowar has already been optioned to Triple-A Omaha in the last week, could Singer be next?
Salvador Perez doubled and homered twice, giving him a half-dozen on the season, and was walked twice with four runs scored. Adalberto Mondesi, Michael A. Taylor, Ryan O'Hearn, and Hunter Dozier all added homeruns to aid the cause. Brad Keller was brilliant for the third straight start, allowing just one earned over six innings; although his strikeouts remain rather low with just a pair over that time frame.
"I think at times in the early going last year, he tried to get too many swings-and-misses early on, and that really tanked his confidence," said pitching coach Cal Eldred. "This year, he's back to the guy that's just going out there and letting the defense behind him do the majority of the work."
With two scoreless innings, Joel Payamps picked up his first save of the season mere days after getting called up to the parent club. He struck out three Mariner hitters without giving up so much as a baserunner. Out of his twenty-two pitches, sixteen were strikes, and ten of those were swinging.

Thanks to a three-run homerun in the first from Salvador Perez, the Royals got out to a 3-1 lead after one inning before eventually settling in to take a 5-3 victory over the Mariners.
Kris Bubic went just four innings, scattering five hits and two walks while allowing one earned run (two total) and fanning four. It wasn't a great outing by any stretch, but it was his best outing of the young season to date.
With three homeruns in the past two games, Perez now leads the league in homeruns with seven; and has overcome an early-season slump and some eye issues to raise his average from .188 on the 16th, to .271 prior to Sunday's action.
Whit Merrifield snapped a 1-for-16 slump by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Andrew Benintendi also collected a pair of hits, as he's now third in the AL batting race with a .383 mark, behind only Steven Kwan of the Guardians (.395), and Nate Lowe of the Rangers sporting a .414 mark.
Ronald Bolanos picked up the win in relief, going 2 1/3 innings of hitless baseball, striking out one and walking one. Josh Staumont worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Two more dingers off the bat of Salvador Perez keyed a 13-7 football-score victory over the Mariners, completing the road sweep and vaulting the Royals into first place.
It's been a fun last few days for Perez, as he put up some eye-popping numbers over the last three days -- 7-for-11 (.636), five homeruns, a double, twelve RBI, and eight runs scored. He leads all of baseball in homeruns (9) and SLG (.865), while tying with Atlanta's Matt Olson in OPS (1.216), and ranking second to Olson in OPS+ (243), wRC+ (239), and wOBA (.509).
"What can I say? He's become one of the most dominant hitters the game has going today," said Seattle skipper Scott Servais (bet you can't say that three times fast). "The real issue is that not only does he crush mistakes, he crushes balls out of the zone, so it's not as easy as just trying to pitch around him."
Lost in Perez' monster series was Bobby Witt Jr.'s first MLB homerun, a fourth-inning blast against Robbie Ray in the fourth. BWJ has struggled overall at the dish through his first few weeks, but six of his nine hits have gone for extra bases.
"My only regret is that I didn't get to do it in the home park, but nonetheless, it's good to get that one out of the way," he said in the post-game press conference.

Royals pitcher Daniel Lynch walked off the mound, and threw his hat in frustration prior to picking up a paper cup to get a drink of water out of the cooler in the dugout.
It was a display of emotion that the even-keeled southpaw admitted was not like himself, but that two rough outings out of three to begin the season have left him frustrated, especially with five homeruns given up through three starts, the latest an 8-4 loss to the White Sox.
"Just too many mistakes in the middle third of the zone, and guys at this level are going to make you pay," Lynch mused when asked about what opposing hitters are doing against him.
Andrew Vaughn and Leury Garcia homered in back-to-back innings to spot the White Sox a 3-0 lead. Salvador Perez continues to swing the hottest bat in baseball, pounding out three more hits, including a solo homerun in the eighth to give him a homerun in four straight games.
However, that homerun was too little, too late as they didn't get any closer than that. Chicago tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sac fly from Tim Anderson.

For the fifth straight game, Salvador Perez homered, this time hitting the game-tying dinger in the top of the sixth to help propel the Royals to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night. It was his MLB-best 11th homerun of the season, and his streak of five games with a homerun tied the team record that he set last year.
In an economical eighty pitches, Zack Greinke allowed just one earned run in seven innings. He scattered four hits, walked one, and struck out two. Miraculously, the two strikeouts are a season high to date.
Yasmani Grandal's fourth inning homerun represented the only tally for the White Sox, who briefly held the division lead after Tuesday's victory, only to lose it again with the Royals' win on Wednesday. Carlos Santana also hit his first homerun of the season in the ninth inning, which gave the Royals the lead for good.
With a scoreless eighth inning, Josh Staumont picked up the victory, and Scott Barlow worked around a one-out walk to earn his third save.

Acquired over the offseason from the Phillies, Adam Haseley's seventh-inning homerun was the difference in the Royals 4-3 loss to the White Sox to cap off the three-game series on the Southside. Chicago was spotted a couple of runs on a first-inning error by Salvador Perez, but the veteran catcher made up for it with a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to give the Royals a 3-2 lead at the time.
The White Sox tied the game on an RBI groundout in the fifth from Tim Anderson, and then Haseley's homerun proved to be the game-winner. A former top prospect with the Phillies, Haseley was traded to the White Sox for minor league pitcher McKinley Moore.
Brad Keller pitched well despite taking the loss, as he threw just seventy-seven pitches in a complete-game, eight-inning outing. He struck out only two, but didn't walk anyone and coaxed thirteen groundball outs out of the Chicago bats.
"He's at his best when he's attacking down in the zone with his tailing action stuff, and getting light contact," said manager Mike Matheny. "I think it's been a mindset shift for him, as I think he thought the next step was missing more bats. He's gone back to attacking the zone, and it's paid off for him."
A bit of bad news in the wake of the loss to the White Sox -- Adalberto Mondesi, who suffered a knee injury in yesterday's win and was listed day-to-day, had another MRI completed after last night's game, and it was discovered that he had a torn ACL. Matheny noted that he would likely miss the remainder of the season, but was placed on the 10-day IL as a precaution.

Making his first start of the year, Brady Singer looked really solid through an abbreviated four innings, scattering just two hits and a walk while striking out four in a 5-2 Royals victory on Friday night. Since he threw just four innings, he didn't qualify for the win (that went to Ronald Bolanos), but manager Mike Matheny was still impressed with Singer's outing.
"He looked in control, threw the changeup really well," he said. "I think part of it is just him trusting that third pitch, and mixing it in well enough to keep guys off-balance."
Kansas City notched a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, with Salvador Perez hitting RBI singles in both innings. Andrew Benintendi and Carlos Santana also had RBI in that time frame, although Santana's came via the sac fly.
The top four hitters in the Royals' lineup combined for nine hits, three runs, and four of the five RBI in the game. Whit Merrifield continues to try and climb out of the early season hole he's been in, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Royals pitching had a shutout going until the ninth, when Joey Gallo's second homerun of the season cut the Royals' lead from five to three. But Joel Payamps bore down, and struck Giancarlo Stanton out to end the contest.

Back-to-back homeruns in the third from Anthony Rizzo and Aaron Judge broke a 1-1 deadlock; and it was the last time that the Royals came close as the Yankees pulled away late for a 5-2 victory on Saturday night. The Royals' bats made Gerrit Cole work for it, but he moved to 2-0 with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out seven while scattering just four hits.
Carlos Hernandez continued to struggle, allowing eight hits and two walks over four innings, throwing a whopping eighty-six pitches through just four frames. The bullpen did good work, however, as the trio of Taylor Clarke, Dylan Coleman, and Gabe Speier all pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings each. Coleman allowed one unearned run, but struck out four in his brief outing.
With three hits and an RBI, Michael Taylor paced the Royals' offense. No other Royal collected more than one hit or reached base safely more than one time, although Salvador Perez now has a modest eight-game hitting streak going.
Hernandez was optioned to Omaha following the contest, with right-hander Jon Heasley taking his place on the active roster.

Falling just one hit short of the cycle, Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI as the Royals blitzed New York 9-1 to take two out of three from the visiting Yankees.
The only hit that Benintendi was missing was a double, as he singled in the fourth, homered in the fifth, and then tripled in the seventh.
With seven and one-third strong innings from Daniel Lynch, the Royals held the Yankees to just one run on five hits, striking out five with one walk. Josh Staumont pitched the final inning and two-thirds, working around a hit and two walks with no runs.
Salvador Perez hit his MLB-best 12th homerun of the season, scoring twice as part of a 2-for-4 day. Kyle Isbel also doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs with a two-run double in the fourth.
