Hey everyone,
We’re excited to announce that we have launched our own official Operation Sports app. It’s available on the iOS App Store and in the Google Play store:
For those of you who have been around these parts for quite some time, you might know we’ve had an app before, but the Tapatalk app was not “official” and was only a way to look at the forums on your phone. However, when the forums changed in any way, it would make that app a bit unwieldy/buggy.
It was still better than nothing, and we’re grateful it lasted as long as it did, but we did not have much control over it or ways to update it. With our own official app, we’ll be able to actually release app updates that can include new features and bug fixes.
On the app, you will be able to scope out both the front page and the forums. Since this is only the start of the app, we are aware of many known issues, particularly around the forums, and we plan to add more to it in the future based on your feedback. In addition, it may take a little longer than usual when you log-in for the first time, but it should not be the case after that initial log-in. With all that in mind, we’ll have a spot on Discord where you can provide feedback.
For example, I want to add more to the forums side of things so you all have more options when making posts and threads on the app, and I want you to more easily be able to navigate large threads with many pages of posts.
As always, we can’t do any of this stuff without you all, so thanks again for the continued support. This app along with the Discord are a couple of the steps we have taken recently to try and bring this community together in as many ways as possible, and we plan to deliver even more on that front in the months ahead.

Confirmed: United Sign Abass on 16th Birthday
Gilbert Abass, out of United's Schoolboy Scholar Program, Joined the Professional Ranks Today

Rumour – Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Gilbert Abass to his first professional contract today, his sixteenth birthday. The club confirmed the signing in a press release this morning. By signing this contract, Abass will be eligible to play for United’s Under-18 team in the Under-18 Premier League, as well as the UEFA Youth League and in the FA Youth Cup. The contract will run for just over two years, expiring in June of 2024, when Abass will be eighteen.
This move has been expected for some time, made official today, the first day Abass was eligible to sign a contract. Abass has been part of United’s Schoolboy Scholar program for years and has been a member the amateur division of United’s academy for years. The club has been eagerly awaiting his 16th birthday, being ready to sign Abass to a professional contract for quite some time.
An unnamed scout indicated to RedDevilUnited that Abass is very raw, but physically gifted, and is likely to develop as a center-back. Abass is already 6-foot-2, and likely still growing, giving him more than enough size to compete in the Premier League at center-back. Reports also indicate that he has the type of athleticism that could serve well in a Thomas Walker-style scheme.
“Of course, he’s a long way off from even competing for the Under-18 team,” said the scout, “He will likely spend next season as just a guy on the Under-18’s and hopefully by the end of the season he can start to spark. Then the year after we can start talking about him as a legitimate prospect for United. We’re still a ways off from that point. Still, this is a kid that United were eager to get pen to paper for because they didn’t want to have him make a switch [to another academy] this summer.”
Abass was born in Kumasi, Ghana on May 10th, 2006, but has spent most of his life in Manchester. He joined United’s academy age nine and became a schoolboy scholar at age twelve. He is a dual English-Ghanaian citizen and could represent both countries, but has yet to be selected by either for any sort of international duty.

Confirmed: United Win FA Youth Cup
Manchester United Won Their 11th FA Youth Cup Tonight, Their First Since 2011

Daniel Hanssen Delivers Brace on Path to FA Youth Cup Victory (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Confirmed – Manchester United are once again the FA Youth Cup Champions, having defeated Blackburn Rovers Under-18 team to claim the club’s 11th victory in the competition, and their first since 2011. United’s Under-18 team dominated the tonight’s final, outclassing Blackburn on the road to a 3-0 victory, led by some of their prized young attacking talent.
Aiding United was the impactful crowd at Old Trafford. Manchester United promoted this game by offering £1 tickets and were able to fill in the Theatre of Dreams with over 68,000 fans, a record for youth football in the UK. It was clear that the crowd gave United an early advantage that allowed them to dominate the early going.
Norwegian international Daniel Hanssen was the man of the match for his two-goal performance. He scored the first goal of the game in the 6th minute, after being set up by midfielder Godwin Bada. He scored his second late in the first half, at minute 41, when Alejandro Garnacho put in a cross across the face of the keeper that Hanssen tapped in. Garnacho was the deliverer of the third and final goal, scoring off a cross from Patrick Nicol in the 63rd minute to seal United’s victory.
Bada, and brothers Isak and Steinar Hansen-Aarøen, as a midfield trio, dominated the game, dictating pace and controlling emotional moments. Goalkeeper Dave Howie was only challenged on one occasion and made a routine save.
“This is an amazing moment,” said United Under-18 coach Dylan Jackson, “I’m just so proud of these guys for all the hard work they’ve put in and all the time and energy they’ve spent turning themselves into fine young men. This is one of those memories that they’ll have for the rest of their life and I’m just so happy for them.”
The Youth Cup win is the culmination of Manchester United’s efforts to revamp their youth set up after their pipeline of elite talent ran dry in recent years. Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford are the most recent United academy graduates to have a meaningful role with the first team, and both graduated from the academy more than five years ago.
Boosting the quality produced by the academy was one of the primary objectives for John Murtough when he took over as Director of Football in 2021. Tonight’s victory is some evidence that that is happening.
Starting Lineup: GK Dave Howie, DEF Arthur MacKie, Maximillian Oyedele, Marc Jurado, Nikolai Strom, MID Godwin Bada, Steinar Hansen-Aarøen, Isak Hansen-Aarøen, FW Patrick Nicol, Alejandro Garnacho, Daniel Hanssen. Subs: Logan Hutchison, Selim Ali, Charlie McNeill.

United Rally From Down Two to Down Arsenal
Julián Álvarez and Marcus Rashford Delivered Late Goals to Keep United's League Hopes Alive
By Felix Short

Julián Álvarez's 82nd Minute Equalizer Gave United Overwhelming Confidence to Earn the Victory (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
London, England – Fresh off the historic achievement from Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United had to quickly transition their focus to Arsenal, as their slim Premier League hopes rested on a victory at Emirates stadium. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team have had a disappointing season, but the chance to spoil their once rivals bid for a treble was more than enough reason to play well at home. And that’s exactly what they did.
Arsenal were first to the punch, scoring the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. It came after a United corner that ended with Arsenal on the counterattack. Arsenal’s Alexander Isak pushed the ball down the wing to Nicolas Pépé, who put a cross into the box, where United’s Eric Bailly and Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney had to fight for the ball. It’s unclear who’s head it touched, but the ball simply carried its current trajectory toward the middle of the box, where Martin Ødegaard was waiting to slam it past David De Gea.
Arsenal took that 1-0 lead into the break, before seeing their lead expanded to two in the 51st minute. On an Arsenal corner, Alexander Isak was first to the ball, and heads it low and hard at Raphaël Varane’s leg, which re-directed the ball into goal, for an own goal on Varane.

But United weren’t ready to concede their treble winning hopes, and they began to take control of the game after that second goal. They brought the game to within one in the 65th minute when United’s Paul Pogba drove the ball around Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and into the box. As the center-backs closed the distance on Pogba, the United midfielders simply chipped the ball into the vacated space, in front of goal, where Cristiano Ronaldo was running to redirect the ball into the corner of the net. With that goal, Ronaldo increased his Premier League leading goal output to thirty-four.
Smelling blood, United went on the attack, looking for the equalizer. It came in the 82nd minute, on the counterattack, when Marcus Rashford, who came on in the 71st minute, used his fresh legs and speed to burst down the sideline, past and around the defense and into the box, where he chipped a ball in to the middle of the box. Julián Álvarez was on the other side of that ball, found it with his head, and put it in the bottom left corner of the net to tie the game.
The rest of the game was dominated by Manchester United, and it seemed only a matter of time before they scored the winner, as Arsenal, as has happened all too often this season, mentally collapsed. Just three minutes later United would score the go-ahead goal that put United three points closer to the treble. From the middle of the field, Julián Álvarez lifted a ball over the defenders, allowing Ronaldo to race past, collect the ball, then dump it off to Hannibal Mejbri. Mejbri took the shot, but it was deflected by Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, only for the rebound to be tapped into net by Marcus Rashford.
With that goal, Manchester United had completed the come back and kept their hopes of the treble alive.
“What a fantastic comeback,” said United manager after the game, “We really fought hard and put it all out there and we made the plays we needed to in order to get the win. I’m proud of our guys for never giving up, and for the effort and fight they showed.”
Thomas Walker raised some eyebrows with his team selection today, selecting Aaron Wan-Bissaka to start at central midfielder with Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matić unavailable. Wan-Bissaka looked uncomfortable to start the game but seemed to gain more confidence as the game went on. It’s unclear if that move will become a trend, as United also saw the return of Fred in today’s game. Fred came on for Paul Pogba in the 82nd minute and finished the game.
The loss drops Arsenal to 10th in the Premier League with 47 points. They are tied on points with both Wolves and Brighton, but trail both because of goal differential.
As for United, they keep pace in the vastly intriguing race to the finish with another three points from this game. The win gives them 74 points on the season, pushing them up to third, tied with Chelsea, but ahead on goal differential. They still trail both Leicester City and West Ham, who each have 75 points. Liverpool, who finishes the day in 5th with 73 points, has the easiest remaining schedule.
Still alive for the Premier League crown, Manchester United’s hopes of the treble will be determined next Saturday at Wembley Stadium, when they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup Final. Arsenal will next be in action on Monday, May 16th at Newcastle.
Manchester United: 3 Goal Scorers: Cristiano Ronaldo (65'), Julián Álvarez (82'), Marcus Rashford (85') Assists: Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford Arsenal: 2 Goal Scorers: Martin Ødegaard (22'), Raphaël Varane OG (51') Assists: n/a |

Amad Out of FA Cup Final With Shoulder Injury
A Shoulder Injury Suffered Against Arsenal Will Keep Amad Out of Action for Now
By Felix Short
| May 12, 2022, 7:00 AM

Amad gripped his shoulder in pain after being tackled in the 19th minute of yesterday's game. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Manchester, England – Manchester United will be without Amad for this weekend’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City after the 19-year-old suffered a shoulder injury against Arsenal at the Emirates in United’s midweek game.
“Amad is a really good player, and he’s done an amazing job for us this season,” said United boss Thomas Walker, “But we’ll have to maneuver around to find a solution. I don’t think he’ll be gone that long but I’ll let the doctors make that decision. Until then, we’ll just keep moving forward, as we’ve done all year.”
Amad injured his shoulder in the 19th minute of Wednesday’s game after being tackled by Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu. Tomiyasu was given a yellow card for the tackle, and play kept moving along with Amad choosing to tough it out. Thomas Walker gave up on that plan in the 32nd minute, replacing Amad with Julián Álvarez, who scored the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute.
Amad has been a revelation this season for United as one of Thomas Walker’s young projects that has developed into a legitimate contributor. United bought Amad from Atalanta in January of 2021 for just under £20 million. The development of young players like Amad was one of the biggest reasons United decided to hire Thomas Walker last summer.
Amad scored his first Manchester United goal against Portsmouth in the EFL Cup on September 22nd and has gone on to make 25 appearances, making seventeen starts, scoring seven goals and notching four assists in all competitions this season.

Greenwood Legal Troubles Resolved
Mason Greenwood Will Remain Suspended For the Rest of the Season, According to the Club
By Felix Short
| May 13, 2022, 7:00 AM

Mason Greenwood has been suspended since preseason play. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Manchester, England – Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood had his legal troubles dismissed on Thursday, after a court ruled that the prosecutor’s office had ample time to build a case and still had insufficient evidence to charge Greenwood with a crime. Greenwood was arrested last summer and immediately suspended by Manchester United Football Club after disturbing audio was unearthed.
The club announced today that Greenwood would remain suspended for the remainder of this season, by order of manager Thomas Walker.
Manchester United fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at the idea of Mason Greenwood returning to the club. Some of that angst turned toward the ownership of the Glazer’s, who have traditionally been willing to keep lawbreakers on the roster of their NFL Franchise, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It is unclear at present where the Glazer’s Ownership stands on the Greenwood situation, and most of the criticism they’ve received today emanates from a general distaste for their ownership over the last nine years. The Glazer’s bought the club in 2005.
It is also unclear how the Manchester United locker room will react to this news. The team is set to play for the FA Cup Title against Manchester City this weekend, and the last thing the club needed was a clubhouse distraction of this sort. The team is stretched thin, having advanced to the FA Cup and UEFA Champions’ League Finals, while also remaining in contention for the Premier League Crown.
As for Greenwood, the decision by the United Kingdom Court System today may allow him to revive his footballing career. He was once the prized jewels of the Manchester United Academy, blossoming into the rare left-footed high upside attacker that United has been missing in recent seasons. After making a brief debut in 2018-19, Greenwood played 101 games over the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, scoring 29 goals and creating eight assists.
Those performances earned Greenwood his first call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad, where he made his debut in September 2020 against Iceland.
As of this writing, Greenwood’s status at Manchester United for the long term is unclear, and club officials were unavailable for comment about the situation.

Manchester United 2022/23 Kits Leak
Manchester United will feature a Red, White and Black Kit Next Season
By Felix Short
| May 13, 2022, 9:00 AM

United looks set to feature a white collar on their 2022/23 Red Home Kits (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Manchester, England – A blurry image of Manchester United uniforms that purport to be the finalized version for the 2022/23 kit emerged today. The leak comes just hours after news broke that Mason Greenwood would not be charged with a crime and appears to be an attempt by the club to change the conversation before United’s FA Cup final with Manchester City this weekend.
If these are indeed the final kits, the classic red home kit will feature a white collar, with a red design. The away kits will be white, featuring red and white diamonds on the cuffs and collar. The third kit appears to be black with red diamonds on the cuffs and collar. The badge will feature inside a five-sided crest on all three kits.
The shirts will continue to be made by Adidas, and feature TeamViewer on the front of the jerseys. The TeamViewer contract with Manchester United runs until 2026 after the company and club agreed to a 5-year, £235 million deal in 2020. The left-side arm band sponsor will continue to be Kohler this season, however that partnership is set to end following the 2022/23 season.
In the leaked photo, Alex Telles is pictured in the home red kit, Cristiano Ronaldo in the road white kit and Scott McTominay in the third black kit.
Manchester United has not featured a white kit since the 2016/17 season.

City Deliver Show in 6-0 FA Cup Win
A Second Half Onslaught from City Delivered the Club its 7th FA Cup Win
By Felix Short
| May 14, 2022, 11:59 PM EST

Manchester City Found Redemption for a Disastrous Season in Today's 6-0 FA Cup Win (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
London, England – Manchester City delivered a devastating blow to their cross-town rivals in this years’ FA Cup Final and managed to salvage a disastrous campaign while they did it. This season saw the club exit the Champions League in the Group Stage and will in all likelihood see City finish outside the top six of the Premier League. The win ensured Manchester City ends the season with a trophy and that the club will play European Soccer next season.
The defeat for Manchester United ends their creeping hopes of winning the treble this season. The club has not felt like a treble winning side for much of this season but had found themselves in the thick of three separate competitions. Ultimately, the lack of quality depth doomed Manchester United. Thomas Walker has chosen to focus his efforts on the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League, using the FA Cup as an opportunity to rest some of his stars and to let his young players shine.
The plan worked to bring Manchester United to the final, but that was in large part thanks to the fact that United did not play a Premier League side between their opening match against Newcastle and Saturday’s final against Manchester City. An unbelievable stream of lucky draws saw United play Newport County, Fulham, Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City, all lower division teams, on their way to the final.

The 6-0 beating they suffered today was an indication that their success was more likely predicated on their opponents than their depth of talent. Most obvious today was the exposure of Phil Jones at left-center-back, who was abused by Ílkay Gündoğan repeatedly on a play that Pep Guardiola drew up to perfection at halftime. City ran the play, exposing Phil
Jones in the 49th minute, 53rd minute and 57th minute, increasing their lead to 4-0 and effectively ending the game before Thomas Walker was forced to remove Phil Jones.
On the day, Ílkay Gündoğan finished with three assists, while Phil Foden finished with two. Kevin De Bruyne scored in the 11th minute, but the onslaught came in the second half when successive scores from Bernardo Silva (49’, 53’), Riyad Mahrez (57’, 65’), and Phil Foden (62’) put the game out of reach.
The lopsided final score belies the fact that this was an even game in the first half. Possession was split evenly, and despite taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, few would say that City was the superior team. United manager Thomas Walker had so much confidence in his team, that despite giving up a second goal in the 49th minute, Walker put on Julián Álvarez and Cristiano Ronaldo in an attempt to bring the game back to level.
Those moves backfired as they prevented Walker from making defensive adjustments later in the game. In this instance, Pep Guardiola played Walker for a fiddle, which must’ve come as a great relief to Guardiola after his club suffered two defeats to United in their Premier League clashes this season. Those losses included an embarrassing 6-0 defeat on November 7th at Old Trafford.
“This feels good, we’ve been playing better lately, and this was something we decided we wanted to finish with,” said City captain Kevin De Bruyne, who scored the opening goal in the 11th minute.
Perhaps no player will feel worse tonight than 18-year-old goalkeeper Bruno Schmitt, who made the start for Manchester United, and will go down as the keeper of record who gave up six goals. It would be unfair to blame the youngster though, who has played well in three other appearances this season, including the FA Cup semifinal.
The most culpable must instead be Phil Jones. Jones, who made a long-awaited return to the field this season, was a feel-good story throughout, making ten appearances this season after missing nearly two years with injury. But the good feeling came to an end today after he was directly responsible for allowing quality chances that resulted in Manchester City’s first four goals.
On the other side, no player should feel better than Ílkay Gündoğan, who won man of the match for his standout performance in delivering Manchester City this trophy.
Both teams will face Premier League opponents this coming Wednesday on the final match day of the 2021-22 season. Manchester City will come back to London to face 2nd place West Ham, while Manchester United will host Chelsea in what is essentially an elimination game for both teams in terms of winning the league.

Buy Clauses Activated On Two United Players
Both Reece Devine and D'Mani Mellor Will Make Permanent Moves to Their New Clubs
By Felix Short
| May 15, 2022, 7:00 AM

Reece Devine made four appearances for the Series A side (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Manchester, England – Manchester United announced today that the buy options for both Reece Devine and D’Mani Mellor have been activated. Both decisions were expected by United, and both players will now join their new clubs on a permanent basis.
Devine will join Serie A side Spezia, signing a new four-year contract with the club. Devine only made four starts for Spezia since joining the club in January but made enough of an impression this Spring to earn the multi-year contract. Spezia is currently in a relegation battle, and a drop to Serie B could present Devine with a serious opportunity to take over as a starter next season.
“We like Devine,” Spezia manager Thiago Motta told La Gazetta dello Sport in recent days, “He comes with the toughness of an English-boy, which will be good. He will need that. Now we need to teach him the Italian game and then he will become a great player for us.”
Devine never appeared with United’s senior team. He arrived at Carrington from the Manchester City academy in the summer of 2018 and made loan moves to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership and Spezia in Serie A before electing to make a permanent home in Italy.
The fee for Devine will be just over one million Pounds, or around 1.3 million Euros.
United saw another home-grown talent move on today, although to a much closer destination. League Two side Port Vale activated the buy-clause for 21-year-old Forward D’Mani Mellor. Mellor joined Port Vale in January and made thirteen appearances. He did not score, but he clearly impressed the coaching staff after finding a level that is suited to his game.
Mellor has been in the United program for over a decade, which culminated in a 25-minute outing against FC Astana in the 2019 Europa League. That turned out to be his only senior team appearance. He did go out on loan to Salford for six months in 2021, but he has spent much of the last several years anguishing in the United Under-23’s. This move gives Mellor closure on his United career and lets him move on as a professional footballer.
United will be paid £75k for Mellor.

United, Chelsea Battle to Scoreless Draw
Both Teams Saw Their Premier League Hopes Dashed at Old Trafford
By Felix Short
| May 18, 2022, 11:59 PM EST

Manchester United and Chelsea drew both of their Premier League Match Ups This Season (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)
Manchester, England – Manchester United and Chelsea entered Wednesday nights penultimate Premier League match desperate for a victory that could propel them into serious title contention. Instead, they both received a one-point draw that effectively eliminated both from being able to hoist the trophy this season.
The game also had huge implications for the race for top four, as the top five teams all remain withing three points entering the final day.
“This was a tough draw for us,” Manchester United boss Thomas Walker told Sky Sports after the game, “We really needed a win, and for us, to be at home, and to not get that win. It was tough. But we still have work to do and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Starting tomorrow, we’ve got two games left and we’re going to do what we have to win both games.”
The game pitted the top scoring offense in the Premier League, Manchester United-82 Goals, against the top defense by goals allowed, Chelsea-38 Goals Allowed. It was Chelsea’s Defense who won out, holding the vaunted Manchester United offense and its star, Cristiano Ronaldo, scoreless throughout the night.

That doesn’t mean Manchester United didn’t have opportunities. They earned their first legitimate chance in the fourth minute, when Manchester United’s Amad broke free and fired hard and low. That shot was blocked by Chelsea keeper Édouard Mendy but signaled how the first part of this game would be played. United’s Hannibal Mejbri had a chance that he put just over the top cross in the 10th minute, United’s second early opportunity.
But Chelsea would settle in, forcing the game into a midfield battle. There was very little danger and excitement until the 38th minute when Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku and United’s Harry Maguire went up for a cross, that left both players down on the ground, writhing in pain. Both players walked away from that injury, but Harry Maguire had to be replaced at half time by Victor Lindelöf.
The change opened up the United defense just a bit, which resulted in a Hakim Ziyech opportunity in the 40th minute that was denied by United keeper David De Gea. This was the beginning of the turning point for Chelsea, who would own most of the dangerous chances for the rest of the game.
N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic each earned dangerous chances in the 67th and 87th minute respectively, but neither could convert. Still, Chelsea was on the front foot, and it was United’s defense that was forced to step up and play the hero.
That’s exactly what they did with Eric Bailly putting in a particularly impressive performance after Maguire left the game. In fact, he earned man of the match honors for his performance, shutting down through balls to Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech on multiple occasions.
“We felt like we were going to score in that second half,” said Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic after the game, “We know we had the momentum and that we were getting closer. We just needed a few more minutes and we would’ve gotten the goal we needed. It’s tough, but that’s how it goes sometimes. We’ll need to finish this season off with a victory now.”
Scott McTominay had United’s final legitimate chance in the 53rd minute, after he cut past the defense and was set up by Cristiano Ronaldo, but his shot was blocked by Mendy, who notched another clean sheet on the day.
The draw leaves both teams sitting on 75 points heading into the final match day. They remain in fourth and fifth place and will be desperate to win on the final day of the season in order to earn Champions League football for next season. On Sunday, Chelsea will host Watford while Manchester United travels to Crystal Palace.
This Sunday will be the season finale for Chelsea, who will be at home watching Manchester United attempt to win the UEFA Champions League next Saturday, a competition that Chelsea still holds the title of defending champions.
