    Manchester United: Transfer Window Preview

Manchester United will need to bolster their line up if they wish to defend their title

    By Felix Short | May 29, 2022, 7:30 AM

Despite Winning the Champions League, United has a Big Summer Shopping List. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United is the champions of Europe. That means that every other major club in Europe will be looking to take them out. If they’re going to defend their crown in any meaningful way, they’ll need to bolster the club this transfer window. Last season, the club suffered from a lack of quality depth and was over-reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo. That lack of depth cost them in league and cup play, as they focused their energy on the Champions League in the final months.

Now, they’re seemingly poised to lose Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba, and Cristiano Ronaldo will be a year older and in need of a partner to share the workload. If United is relying on Ronaldo to put up another fifty-goal season, they’re likely to be disappointed. Both Ronaldo and United manager Thomas Walker have said as much in recent weeks. With that considered, what are United’s priorities in this transfer window?

    Center-forward

Cristiano Ronaldo played 4,557 minutes last season. That’s too many and both he and the club know it. That’s why the club has been linked with French superstar Kylian Mbappé for months. Mbappé is a free agent this summer, and while he’ll have the option to go anywhere in the world, it appears as if his choice will come down to one of Manchester United, Real Madrid, or Paris Saint-Germain. United manager Thomas Walker and Mbappé expressed mutual admiration on multiple occasions during the 2020-21 season when Walker’s Lille squad beat PSG for the Ligue Un title. Will that admiration be enough for United to convince Mbappé to reject his boyhood favorite or his hometown club? It remains to be seen. If Mbappé does indeed end up at United, he would be able to fit in well with Ronaldo as either can play on the wing, while spelling each other at center-forward.

If their pursuit of Mbappé does not go to plan, they will still need a center-forward. They’re going to lose Edinson Cavani and his minutes will need to be replaced by someone who will stay healthy. Anthony Martial can play at the nine, but he seems to have a rocky relationship with Walker. Rashford looked like a future center-forward earlier in his career, but Thomas Walker was reluctant to play him at that spot last season. The same can be said for Julián Álvarez who arrived in February. There is the looming presence of Mason Greenwood, but nobody is sure what he will be, or if he will even be with United this season. All that leads to the necessity of bringing in another forward. Who could be on that list?

Victor Osimhen seems like the obvious next candidate after Mbappé. Thomas Walker helped Osimhen become a household name at Lille before he was sold to Napoli for €70 million. A few quality seasons in Serie A have done Osimhen well, but he may now be ready to reconnect with his old boss for one of Europe’s top clubs. If Osimhen is too pricey, United may opt for a candidate like Jonathan David. David burst onto the scene in 2020-21 at Lille under Walker, and he followed that up with another good season this year. Likely available for half the price as Osimhen, he could be the player United look at. They could also go outside Walker’s lineage and look at rising stars like Benfica’s Darwin Nuñez, RB Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi, Porto’s Evanilson, or Nice’s Amine Gouiri. It’s also rumored that Thomas Walker has an affinity for Leicester City striker Patson Daka, who didn’t play much for Leicester City last year but starred for RB Salzburg for three seasons before.

Whichever direction United decide to go, they’ll need to add a goalscorer up front.

    Midfielder

United has had a lukewarm relationship with Paul Pogba for years, and despite early signs that that may change this season, it was very much status quo with Thomas Walker in charge. Pogba has had a lucrative offer from Manchester United on the table all season, so it seems likely that Pogba is looking for a move this summer. If that does indeed happen, United will need to find a replacement.

Perhaps the time is finally right for Manchester United to make a serious move for West Ham’s Declan Rice. West Ham has repeatedly insisted that Rice has a £100 million price tag, but that number may be higher with West Ham in the Champions League next season. Manchester United was also linked to Monaco’s Aurelién Tchouaméni during the winter transfer window, and he’s another player that United’s board would love to acquire. Perhaps an under-the-radar move could be for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. de Jong, who has emerged as one of the top midfielders in Europe, could be available as Barcelona continues to struggle with its financial situation. As one of Barcelona’s most valuable assets, de Jong could be on the move this summer to alleviate some of the club’s financial strain. If he is going to move, a move to the European Champions could be attractive for the Dutch international.

Lille’s Renato Sanches could also be an option for United. Coming through the ranks at Benfica, Sanches was once considered a wonder kid of sorts, but his big move to Bayern Munich failed to materialize in glory amid poor performances and repeated injuries. That’s when Thomas Walker brought the midfielder to Lille and revitalized his career. Sanches was still injury-prone at Lille, but he regained his stock as a talented midfielder. Would Walker be interested in another reunion with Sanches? He’s still injury-prone, but United may not need to rely on him for as many games with the emergence of talents like Hannibal Mejbri.

And of course, United could go after the biggest target on the minds of Britain’s Big Six. Somewhat of a golden boy for Premier League hopefuls, United could capitalize on their Champions League victory to try and lure English 19-year-old, Jude Bellingham. Borussia Dortmund has insisted that Bellingham isn’t for sale this summer, but United did business with the German club last year for Jadon Sancho and they could use those relationships to try and pry Bellingham away this season. It may take a hefty fee, but this is exactly the type of player that the Manchester United board would love to have.

    Center-back

Manchester United has spent over £170 million on center-backs over the past six seasons to bring in Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelöf, Harry Maguire, and Raphaël Varane. Despite that financial outlay, Thomas Walker is still not happy with his center-back options. United failed to adopt the style of play that Walker used to devastating effect at Lille in large part because of his lack of trust in his center-backs. Captain Harry Maguire seems assured of a move out of the club this summer after failing to earn Thomas Walker's trust in meaningful moments last season. Raphaël Varane started 43 games last season, but it was a lot of mixing and matching to find him a partner. Thomas Walker will want to handpick a partner for him this season.

When Harry Maguire was used, it was to play in the middle of a back three where his size could be a factor but where his lack of athleticism wasn’t going to hurt the team. With Varane as the skilled playmaker out of the back, it seems likely that United will look for a big, athletic center-back who can cover a lot of ground and still be a menace in the air. The name that we’ve heard most attached to United is Barcelona’s 23-year-old emerging talent, Ronald Araújo. Araújo will only have one year left on his contract, and with Barcelona’s current financial situation, they may have no choice but to cash in on Araújo before losing him for free next summer. If that is indeed United’s top choice, he would represent one of the brightest young talents at the position, who brings the size, athleticism, and distribution ability that every club would love to have.

A familiar theme in this run-down is that United could look to Walker’s past and bring in Sven Botman of Lille. Botman is big, and while he doesn’t have tremendous athleticism, he has played and knows the Thomas Walker defense. Manchester United have also been connected to RB Leipzig’s Joško Gvardiol, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Evan N’dicka, Bayer Leverkusen’s Odilon Kossounou, and Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix.

Projecting out a bit, United could also be interested in burgeoning talents like AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori or Sporting’s Gonçalo Inácio, but perhaps their smartest opportunity would be to sign free agent Antonio Rüdiger. Rüdiger is coming off three very good seasons for Chelsea, has the athleticism and size that Thomas Walker would like, is Premier League proven, and could immediately step in next to Raphaël Varane to form one of the top partnerships in Europe. A signing like Rüdiger would immediately shore up their defense and could unlock a new, higher level for Manchester United.

    Elsewhere

Those three positions seem like they will be the priority for Manchester United this summer, but if the opportunities present themselves, they could look to upgrade elsewhere.

Manchester United saw very little production from their fullbacks last season, and they could look to address that. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a standout defensively, but they may want a fullback that can provide more going forward in games against less menacing opponents. Considering Diogo Dalot is entering the final season of his contract, now may be the time to find a replacement.

Similarly, on the left, United have solid options in Luke Shaw and Alex Telles, but neither is a world-class player, and they combined for one goal and two assists last season. United could use more from the position and adding a dynamic athlete on the outside could be a good move for United.

David De Gea has been in net at Old Trafford for over a decade now, but the club is coming to a crossroads with him. The battle between De Gea and Dean Henderson was decided this year, and Henderson will likely be on the move this summer, meaning United will need to bring in at least one goalkeeper, even if he is to be the backup to De Gea. However, if the club was feeling up to the task, United may look to find De Gea’s replacement. De Gea is entering the final year of his contract and is already the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world. Considering he doesn’t fit the modern style, United may be hesitant to blindly commit their future to him. That situation will remain one to watch this summer.

United Will Face Real Madrid in UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid Will Look to Win the Super Cup to Jumpstart a Come Back Season

      By Felix Short | May 29, 2022, 8:00 AM

Real Madrid won La Liga and the Europa League, playing some of the best football in Europe this spring. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United will face Real Madrid on August 10th in the UEFA Super Cup to kick off their 2022-23 campaign. The annual meeting between the Champions League winner and the Europa League winner will pit two of the most storied clubs in world football.

Manchester United earned their birth last night when they defeated Bayern Munich on penalties to claim European football’s biggest crown. Real Madrid took the longer, more painful, less glorious route. Madrid came in a disappointing third place in their group in the group stage of the Champions League, earning a draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in Madrid on December 8th when they needed a win to advance.

Madrid responded by dominating the Europa League, dismantling AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympique Marseille, Real Betis, and Olympique Lyonnais enroute to the title. They won each match decisively.

Both teams are expected to be coming off big summers, with both deeply involved in the race for Kylian Mbappé. Most insiders believe the race for Mbappé will only include those two, and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid has been targeting Mbappé for years in preparation for his free agency, while Manchester United will be riding high off the back of the Champions League victory.

If Real Madrid does secure Mbappé, they will likely be the favorites entering this game with Manchester United. The club dominated the Europa League and won La Liga this year under Carlo Ancelotti, who had this team playing extraordinarily well in recent months. Manchester United, meanwhile, saw their hopes of winning either the domestic cup or league dashed by a lack of depth.

The winner of the Europa League has not won this game since 2018 when Atlético Madrid upset Real Madrid 4-2. Last year, Champions League winner Chelsea defeated Villarreal on penalties.

The game will be played at Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland.

United to Represent UEFA at Club World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo Will Attend His Sixth Club World Cup Next February

        By Felix Short | May 30, 2022, 7:00 AM

The 2023 version of the tournament will be hosted in Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United will, as the Champions of Europe, represent UEFA at the 2023 Club World Cup. It will mark Manchester United’s third time participating in the tournament. They represented UEFA in the inaugural tournament after winning the treble in 1998-99.

United did not fare well in the 2000 version of the tournament, accruing four points in three games and being eliminated in the group round. They were much better in 2008, defeating Gamba Osaka and LDU Quito en route to the tournament trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on that 2008 Manchester United team that won the trophy, but he has also won it on four other occasions with Real Madrid in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Raphaël Varane was also a member of those four titles winning sides with Real Madrid.

This version of the tournament will take place in February 2023 in Mexico City, and it will take place in a slightly different format than it has in recent seasons. Instead of having the winners of the UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores automatically advance to the semi-finals, this tournament will randomly select seven teams for eight spots. One lucky team will be given a first-round bye. This means that in all likelihood, Manchester United will have to win three games instead of two to become Club World Cup Champions.

FIFA has also moved the competition away from the middle east for the first time since 2016. Next year’s tournament will take place in Mexico City at Estadio Azteca. As a result, Liga MX’s Club América will participate as the host team. They represent a much more competitive opponent than the clubs from Qatar or the UAE that have hosted in recent seasons.

Aside from Manchester United and Club América, two other clubs have already secured their spot in next February’s tournament. After winning the CAF Champions League last weekend, Egpyt’s Al Ahly will represent Africa. The USA’s Seattle Sounders will represent CONCACAF after winning the CONCACAF Champions League in April. The final three participants have yet to be decided. They will be selected as winners of the AFC Champions League, decided November 29th, OFC Champions League, decided August 16th, and Copa Libertadores, decided October 29th.

Manchester United will be the runaway favorite in this tournament as UEFA has traditionally dominated. The UEFA representative has won the tournament each of the last nine years, with Brazilian side Corinthians the last to win from outside of Europe in 2012.

This February’s tournament pitted Chelsea against Brazil’s Palmeiras in the final, a game that Chelsea won in extra time.

          Manchester United Announce Resignations

Long-time Scout Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout Will Leave the Club at the End of the Month

          By Felix Short | May 30, 2022, 7:30 AM

United will look to re-tool its acquisitions department this summer. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United announced the departure of two long-time boardroom-level staffers from the club today, Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout. Both members served in the scouting department and are rumored to leave because United wants to re-tool its player acquisition staff and process.

Jim Lawlor had been at the club for sixteen years until today and had risen to the role of Chief Scout. Marcel Bout arrived at Carrington in 2014 as part of the staff brought in by former coach Louis van Gaal.

“Both Jim and Marcel were invaluable members of the Manchester United staff and worked hard to ensure that the club reached its peak and built a team that could win trophies,” said a club spokesperson, “They were top tier members of our staff, and their work helped United win many games. This season’s UEFA Champions League victory is the final feather in the cap of their extraordinary time at Manchester United.”

The scouting department has a mixed legacy over the past few years, spending big on young British talent that failed to live up to their price tags. In no other individual is that more evident than in Harry Maguire, who United purchased for £80 million. Maguire seems poised to leave the club this summer after three turbulent seasons, and United would be lucky to earn half that in return. While Maguire may be the most obvious overpay, the club overspent on players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fred in recent seasons.

Long-time Executive Director Ed Woodward resigned from his position in January, fulfilling a promise he made to the fans after the Super League debacle fallout. He was replaced by Richard Arnold, who is looking to realize his vision for the club. United will likely announce new hirings for the front office soon.

In the meantime, Assistant Head of Scouting Walter King, who arrived with Thomas Walker last summer, has been promoted to interim Head of Scouting. It’s unclear if United will hire a new ‘Chief Scout’ or if they will bring new people into new roles.

Johnstone Agrees to Join Manchester United

West Brom Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone Has Agreed to Return to Manchester United on a Free

            By Felix Short | May 30, 2022, 8:00 AM

Manchester, England – Manchester United got an early start to their summer today when they agreed to terms with West Bromwich Albion Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a two-year contract that will bring the former United youth prospect back to Old Trafford.

Johnstone is on an expiring contract with West Brom and had informed the club last summer that he intended to make a move at the end of the 2021-22 campaign. He will reportedly sign a two-year deal worth £42k per week with the European Champions.

Sources indicated to ESPN that this deal had been in place for weeks but that the club did not want to distract the team during their run of May games.

Johnstone is a product of the Manchester United youth academy, having joined the Red Devils at age seventeen. Johnstone made his mark in his second season at the club, tending to goal on the 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning side that brought United its eleventh youth cup trophy. He shared the field that day with future standouts Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

His United career didn’t take off from there, however. Over the next seven years, Johnstone made loan moves to Oldham Athletic, S****horpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, and Aston Villa. That last move, to Aston Villa, did enough to convince the West Brom board that it was worth investing in Johnstone. In the summer of 2018, the club spent £6.5m to bring Johnstone in as their number one keeper. Johnstone never made a senior team appearance for United.

With West Brom, Johnstone blossomed. He signed a four-year contract that expires at the end of June, ending a standout season and four-year period for Johnstone. He started all 46 West Brom’s Championship games this season, keeping twelve clean sheets. But his better-than-expected advanced metrics stood out to United and manager Thomas Walker.

His performances have even earned him opportunities with the English national team over the past eighteen months.

Given his situation, it’s a bit of a surprise that he would elect to join Manchester United with David De Gea under contract.

Sources tell ESPN that Johnstone has been assured that he will be given a chance to compete for the number one job once he arrives at Manchester United. Long-time keeper David De Gea was United’s number one this season, but he had a shaky season, allowing 54 goals in just 37 Premier League starts. For a kid from Preston who grew up a United fan, that was all Johnstone needed to hear to accept the offer to play at Old Trafford.

De Gea has one year left on his deal, one that has him as the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world. That contract decision likely won’t be easy for United, as they will be reluctant to keep him on that wage, whereas De Gea has no incentive to negotiate a new deal this early. De Gea also doesn’t fit the profile of the type of modern goalkeeper that Thomas Walker will want long-term. That means that Walker and his staff will be forced to look hard at the future of the goalkeeping position.

The short-term nature of Johnstone’s contract means that he will have every opportunity to battle De Gea for the starting role this season, but he isn’t locked in for the long term if that battle doesn’t go his way.

The deal also likely means the end for Manchester United’s other goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. Henderson was a prized prospect for United, but after multiple loan moves and even earning time as Ole Gunnar Skolsjær’s number one in 2021, it appears that Thomas Walker has firmly decided for De Gea over Henderson. That was evident in January when United agreed to loan Henderson to Scottish Premiership side Rangers for the rest of the season.

Henderson is back with United for now but is expected to seek a more permanent home in the summer transfer market. Back-up goalkeeper Tom Heaton does not seem like a candidate to challenge for serious playing time next season, and youngster Bruno Schmitt looks to be on the path to a loan move.

That sets the stage for a Johnstone, De Gea battle for United’s number one job in the preseason.

                United's Loan Army: A Look at 2021-22

A few of Reds on Loan had standout seasons for their loan club

                By Felix Short | June 1, 2022, 7:00 AM

Perhaps no player helped their situation more than Jimmy Garner last year. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – When Manchester United returns to training on July 1st, they will welcome back sixteen players that the club sent on loan this season. Many of them will be sold or sent on loan again next season, but it's worth evaluating their time with their loan club to understand their future.

Donny van de Beek – van de Beek moved to Sevilla in January after another lackluster start to the Premier League games. In the first half of the season, van de Beek only saw action in ten games and was only prominently featured in United's Cup Games. It looked bleak for van de Beek's future for a mid-twenties midfielder who has now failed to stand out under two separate coaches. But the loan to Sevilla breathed new life into the midfielder. He quickly earned a starting job for a Champions League side that finished fourth in La Liga. In 23 games, van de Beek scored two goals and made five assists, reestablishing himself as a legitimate player after two poor years at United. He'll return to a United midfield that is unlikely to have Paul Pogba so that he could find himself with a role at United. The bigger question will be; has Thomas Walker's opinion of van de Beek changed since he moved to Spain in January? Van de Beek will spend the preseason with United, but his future may be out of his hands. United seems poised to bring in a new midfielder to replace Paul Pogba, and with the emergence of Hannibal Mejbri and improvements of Scott McTominay and Fred, there may not be room for van de Beek.

Dean Henderson – Henderson, much like van de Beek, found himself outside the rotation. There was a point last season where Henderson seemed to emerge out of David De Gea's shadow to become the number one. But Thomas Walker put an end to that this season and Henderson was only seen in Cup Games and two Champions League games after United had clinched qualification. In those seven starts, Henderson kept one clean sheet. After helping United defeat Newport County in late January, Henderson completed a loan move to Scottish giants Rangers. Rangers needed to replace veteran keeper Allan McGregor, who was sidelined with an injury, and Henderson needed playing time. The loan worked as Henderson helped Rangers close out a league-winning season. In seven games with Rangers, Henderson kept four clean sheets as Rangers survived with a two-point lead over Celtic to win the Scottish Premiership. His loan with Rangers now over and his reputation restored, it seems likely that Henderson will look for a more permanent move this summer, with several Premier League clubs likely interested in his services.

Axel Tuanzebe – Tuanzebe spent this season in Italy for the Italian giants Napoli. He served as a third-choice center-back behind Kalidou Koulibaly and Amir Rrahmani but provided valuable athleticism and depth to one of the top clubs in Italy. In all, he played 23 games for the club, 19 of which came in Serie A. He played well and, most importantly, showed that he can stay healthy after several injury-riddled seasons in England. That athleticism will make him an exciting player for United manager Thomas Walker, who is looking to retool his center-back situation. He craves more athletic players in the back, and Tuanzebe certainly fits the bill. Tuanzebe will spend the preseason with United, and if he can impress Walker, he will have every opportunity to spend next season with the Red Devils.

Jimmy Garner – Perhaps the star of United's loanees this season, Jimmy Garner became a legitimate talking point for Manchester United fans. Many are convinced that Garner will enter United stardom in the new season. Garner spent last season at Championship side Nottingham Forest, starring on a squad one game away from promotion to the Premier League. Garner played 37 games for Forest, scoring three goals and recording ten assists in a breakout campaign. With United appearing thin at midfielder and having proven himself within the second division, Garner looks poised to make the senior team for the coming season. United will look to have six midfielders in line next season, and with only four spots locked up, there is undoubtedly room available for Garner if he can prove himself to Thomas Walker in the preseason.

Brandon Williams – Brandon Williams played a significant role for Manchester United in 2019-20 before being relegated to the bench after United acquired Alex Telles. This prompted Williams to seek a loan this year, and he landed in the Premier League with Norwich City. Norwich was relegated, but Williams proved to be one of their better players. He's clearly a Premier League talent, but at 21 years old, it's beginning to look like he won't become an elite talent. Most Manchester United fans would admit they'd be comfortable with Williams on the roster, if as a backup. Perhaps Thomas Walker will like him more when he gets to see him up close this preseason. Williams seems like a legitimate candidate to be sold to a mid-tier Premier League squad in search of a left-back if he doesn't. He started 26 games for Norwich City last season.

Tahith Chong – Chong looked like he was finally breaking out this season after his highly touted youth career. Chong scored three goals in the first six games of Birmingham City's season before he got injured again, a constant theme of his young career. Chong managed to play 22 games this season but didn't score another goal and mainly was a non-factor for a club that finished one spot above the relegation zone. He'll return to Manchester United this summer with one year left on his contract, meaning this could be the biggest summer of his career. Rumors around United indicate that Thomas Walker wants to get one more preseason with him before deciding his future. Considering his contract situation, it seems unlikely he'll get another loan move. He'll impress the coaching staff enough this preseason to earn a spot in the rotation, or he'll be a candidate to make a more permanent move this summer.

Facundo Pellistri – Pellistri is another player coming up on an important summer. He spent the last season with La Liga's Alavés, getting experience in Spain, a decision that was partially made to help him feel more comfortable with a language he speaks fluently. But on the field didn't do to plan, as Pellistri only played in sixteen games and failed to score from the winger position. Manchester United is confident that Pellistri is better than that. Pellistri did solidify his place in the Uruguayan national team and is likely to go to the World Cup next month, so the talent is there. It's expected that Thomas Walker will want Pellistri closer to United next season, whether with the senior team squad or on loan at a club in England. Still, the time has come for Pellistri to step up and show if he is a legitimate talent or just a failed experiment. Whether he sticks with the senior team will be decided in preseason.

Ove Hanssen – Hanssen was one of the biggest surprises at Manchester United last season after arriving from Norway last summer. Many thought Hanssen was only brought in to help allure his more talented younger brother to Old Trafford, but Ove quickly established himself as his own man. He was so good with the youth teams that the club had him training with the first team by December. But, two weeks with the first team in training had United convinced that he needed to continue developing in a league where his diminutive size wouldn't inhibit his development. That's why the club sent him to Spain's CA Osasuna, where he looked comfortable in the Spanish style. Ove is only 5-foot-5, so there's still a big question of whether he can hold up physically in the Premier League. This is especially true considering he doesn't have stand-out physical traits such as dynamic pace. Still, Ove is silky smooth on the ball, and he will be with the club for preseason before determining his future.

Ethan Laird – Laird had a tale of two seasons. He was phenomenal in the first half for Swansea City, starting 21 games and scoring four goals. Then United wanted to challenge him by putting him on a promotion-fighting side. So Laird made a move to Bournemouth, where his season fizzled out. Stuck behind Jack Stacey, Laird only made six appearances in the second half of the season. He'll return to United licking his wounds and hoping Thomas Walker can help revitalize his prospects. Laird is still a dynamic athlete, and as evidenced by his output at Swansea City, he's undoubtedly a talented lad. But he still seems destined for a loan move that will set him up for future success. Is he ready for the Premier League? That will be one of the burning questions for Thomas walker to decide on in the coming months.

Di'Shon Bernard – Manchester United sent two promising young center-backs on loan last season to prove themselves in the Championship, and Di'Shon Bernard did just that. Despite Hull City's relegation, Bernard shined in defense for the club and became a fan favorite. He started 51 games for Hull, scoring two goals in the process. Manchester United currently has six senior team center-backs under contract for next season and is expected to add another in the transfer window. Hence, it seems far-fetched to expect Bernard to crack the United rotation this season. Still, with Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones running out of contract and Harry Maguire seemingly on the way out, next year's loan move could position Bernard for a meaningful role with the first team in 2023-24.

Teden Mengi – The other promising center-back United sent out on loan was Teden Mengi, who spent the season with Birmingham City. Mengi struggled to adapt to the Championship at the beginning of last season but had become a locked-in starter for John Eustace's side by December. He ended up starting 32 games and scoring a goal for the club as they avoided relegation. For Mengi, the secret will be to continue improving. He is almost assured of spending next season on loan again. Still, he has shown the type of athletic qualities that Thomas Walker would love, and it's not far-fetched to believe he can crack United's rotation once they see some departures. Mengi only recently turned twenty, so he has plenty of time to turn himself into a legitimate Premier League option moving forward.

Nathan Bishop – Manchester United fans have spent much time talking about goalkeepers this season. Debating David De Gea vs. Dean Henderson, watching Henderson go on loan, hearing rumors of Lee Grant's retirement, seeing the emergence of Bruno Schmitt with the senior team, and acquiring teenager Dave Howie. Among all that, United still has a goalkeeper under contract that was virtually unheard of this season in Bishop, who spent the season in League Two with Mansfield Town. Despite the lack of chatter, Bishop had an excellent season in the fourth division, playing in 52 games and keeping fifteen clean sheets. It isn't easy to envision where this leaves Bishop, as United has plenty going on at the goalkeeping position. Few see Bishop as a long-term starter at Manchester United, but it is still noteworthy. Will his big season in the fourth division convince a team that he is worthy of buying from Manchester United? Will he be loaned out to League One or the Championship next season?

Dylan Levitt – Welsh International Dylan Levitt finally found success on his third loan move. Brief and immemorable stints at Charlton Athletic and Istra 1961 didn't stop Levitt from finding success in the Scottish Premiership. As a midfielder, Levitt played eighteen games, scored two goals, and assisted one other. There aren't many that expect Levitt to become a first-teamer for Manchester United, so United may look to capitalize by selling Levitt this summer after a good season. If not, he'll be looking to get a better loan move for next season, allowing him to raise his stock even more.

Ethan Galbraith – Galbraith was a pleasant surprise for Doncaster Rovers last year and quickly became a fan favorite for one of the most successful sides in recent memory. Doncaster lost a promotion to the English Championship in the playoff final and was stunningly successful in the FA Cup. Their run was overshadowed by the miraculous semifinal run of Bradford City, but Doncaster made it to the quarterfinals before running into Manchester United. United even sanctioned Galbraith to play in that game because they wanted him to have that experience, a rare kindness from a parent club. He made 32 starts, scored three goals, and made three assists while playing an essential role in the midfield for one of the better clubs in League One. After an impressive season, Galbraith will look at a loan in the Championship.

                  United Announce Preseason Shake Up

Manchester United Finalized Their Preseason, Announcing Games with Real Betis and FC Porto

United will end their Preseason in Dublin, Ireland on August 3rd (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – “Manchester United will play Real Betis at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland on July 30th,” read a club press release today that confirms rumors of a preseason shake-up. Manchester United was initially scheduled to play Olympique Lyonnais in the Swiss city that day, but the French club was forced to pull out in recent weeks. Today, United announced they would play La Liga side Real Betis instead.

The game will mark the fifth preseason game for United this summer and will come just twelve days before their season kicks off in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.

Real Betis will be a quality opponent for United in one of their final tune-ups for the regular season. Betis finished sixth in La Liga last season and made it to the Europa League semi-final before falling to eventual champions Real Madrid. The club is led by star midfielder Nabil Fekir.

In the same press release, Manchester United announced their final preseason game, to be played on August 3rd in Dublin, Ireland. Manchester United will face FC Porto in Aviva Stadium to close their preseason, seven days before their match against Real Madrid.

FC Porto won the Portuguese Primeira Division last season and will again participate in the champions league.

Many around Manchester United expressed the importance of this game because Manchester United has not played in Ireland since before the pandemic, and the club wanted to show appreciation for their Irish fans.

Both games will take place after United tours Japan from July 13th to July 24th. In that period, they will face Gamba Osaka, Kashima Antlers, and Ajax.

The club will begin their preseason with a game against Hull City in MKM Stadium on July 11th.

United begin their competitive schedule against Real Madrid on August 10th in the UEFA Super Cup before opening their Premier League schedule with Chelsea four days later.

                    World Cup Rosters Announced

Fifteen Manchester United Players Will Participate in Qatar

Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal in his last World Cup (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – All thirty-two teams participating in the World Cup submitted their final 26-man rosters today, and fifteen Red Devils made the cut. The first game of the World Cup kicks off in ten days between Ecuador and host Qatar.

Despite Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka making the provisional roster for England, Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire will be the only representatives of the home nation. They’re in a group with Iran, Wales, and the USA. Maguire is expected to start for Gareth Southgate’s team, with Rashford likely available as a pacey super-sub off the bench.

The most representative nation for United players is Portugal, who survived the UEFA Playoff to make this World Cup. They’re in a group with Ghana, South Korea, and Uruguay. Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes are expected to star for the Portuguese side, with Diogo Dalot providing depth at right-back.

Uruguay will also include multiple United players, Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri, selected for the squad. Cavani, Luis Suárez, and Darwin Nuñez are expected to lead the line for Uruguay, with Pellistri featuring as an off-the-bench option.

Defending Champions France will see the return of Raphaël Varane and Paul Pogba, who will look to retain their crown as World Champions. Pogba, who will become a free agent at the end of the month, has stated he will wait until after the World Cup to decide his club future. France is expected to top a group with Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia.

Tunisia will feature Hannibal Mejbri, who has come onto the scene and impressed enormously in recent months. He has yet to establish himself as a star for Tunisia, but with his emergence at United potentially earning him starting minutes, this may be the breakout tournament for Mejbri and his country.

Both South American giants will feature United players. A lack of depth at left-back has seen Alex Telles make the Brazil squad, and Fred’s energetic emergence in the second half of the season punched his ticket to Qatar. For Argentina, Julián Álvarez will feature alongside Lionel Messi. Both squads are seen as favorites to win the tournament.

The last two Red Devils to make World Cup rosters are David De Gea for Spain and Donny van de Beek for the Netherlands. Neither player is expected to play a significant role during this tournament.

Matič to Sign with AS Roma

José Mourinho's Side Bolsters its Squad with United Free Agent

                      By Felix Short | June 2, 2022, 7:30 AM

After a Quiet Final Season in Manchester, Nemanja Matič Will Reunite with José Mourinho (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Rome, Italy – Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matič has agreed to terms with AS Roma on a two-year contract that will reunite Matič with his former manager, José Mourinho. Matič was a proverbial fish out of water in Thomas Walker's new system at United last season, only making thirteen appearances in all competitions. His new deal with AS Roma will ensure Matič continues playing at the highest level of European football after a quiet final season in Manchester.

"This was an important player for our club and our coach," said Roma CEO Dan Friedkin, "He has a long history with José, and because of that, we're certain that he has the make-up and talent to make a great difference for us next season."

Mourinho guided AS Roma to an impressive fourth-place finish in his first season in Rome and will now need to bolster his roster if he seeks to be competitive in the champions league next season. Reuniting with Matič will give him the depth at defensive midfield that he will need.

Matič will compete with 27-year-old Bryan Cristante for minutes in Mourinho's 3-1-4-2. He will also help add leadership to a side morphing in José Mourinho's image.

"I'm very excited for this opportunity," said Matič, "Roma is a great club with a great history in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. It's an exciting challenge and one that I'm greatly looking forward to. We will do great things, I'm sure of it."

José Mourinho has now brought Matič to his club three times. He brought Matič to Chelsea from Benfica for £21 million in 2014, then brought him to Manchester United for £40 million in 2017. Matič has the size and defensive awareness to protect a back line and distribute the ball in a counterattacking offense. He's a prototypical Mourinho defensive midfielder.

Upon signing this contract, Matič will officially leave the Premier League after eight seasons with this move. His contract with United expires at the end of the month. Matič had 170 caps with United in his five seasons with the club. He scored four goals in that time. For his career, Matič has made 522 appearances and scored 26 goals.

Germán Buendía to Join United Front Office

Buendía Comes to United After an Incredibly Successful Eight Year Run at River Plate

Germán Buendía After River Plate's Copa Libertadores Win in 2018 (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United announced the addition of Germán Buendía to their footballing staff today under the title Advisor to the Director of Football. He will assist Director of Football John Murtough with scouting, talent acquisition, and market expertise.

Buendía is considered one of South America's rising front office talents, having established himself in an eight-year run as Sporting Director at Argentine powerhouse River Plate. He was the architect of River Plate teams that won the Copa Libertadores in 2015 and 2018.

Buendía left River Plate last summer for personal reasons, but many in South America expected him to return to a front office role with a South American power this summer. Many thought he would go to Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras, but he has instead decided to join Manchester United.

Over the last year, Buendía has served as a facilitator for the transfers of some of South America's highest profile players. That included the transfer of Julián Álvarez to Manchester United in January. Manchester United Director of Football John Murtough and Manager Thomas Walker established relationships with Buendía in December, with Murtough and former Head of Scouting Marcel Bout making a surprise trip to Argentina in December to facilitate the Álvarez deal.

Throughout that process, Thomas Walker and Buendía formed a strong connection that eventually led to talks about this move. Manchester United have not made a first-team signing out of Latin America since they signed Javier Hernández—known affectionately as Chicharito—in 2010. That changed in January when they inked Julián Álvarez, and United hopes that is only the beginning of a new trend.

"Germán is an incredibly talented individual," read a club release, "Who will bring ingenuity, innovation, and a commitment to excellence that represents Manchester United and everything Manchester United stands for."

At 43 years old, Buendía is expected to serve as Manchester United's chief talent scout in the Western Hemisphere while specializing in the talented Argentine and Brazilian markets.

Rumour: Lacroix is Walker's Top Center-back Target

After Watching His Squad, Thomas Walker Has Decided Wolfsburg's Lacroix is His Main Priority

                          By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / June 3, 2022, 11:30 PM EST

Maxence Lacroix stepped up into a bigger role with Wolfsburg this season, starting forty games. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Rumour – Sources tell RedDevilUnited that Thomas Walker, John Murtough, and the MUFC Board have made Wolfsburg center-back Maxence Lacroix their top priority at center-back this summer. The club believes that signing Lacroix from the Bundesliga represents the first step in building a roster that can play the style of football that Thomas Walker wants.

Lacroix is best described as an ultra-athlete at center-back, with top-of-the-charts pace, quickness, explosiveness, and vertical ability. At 6-foot-3, he’s got the size to hold his own in the Premier League, but he pairs that with the ability to cover an enormous range and play one-v-one against the most athletic attackers in the Premier League.

“This is the guy they’re focusing on at the center-back position,” a source told RedDevilUnited.

Lacroix’s weakness is with his feet, but if he pairs with a player like Raphaël Varane, United will have the dynamic passing capability they want out of the center-back position without sacrificing athleticism. The other downside is that Lacroix is right-footed, so that he won’t provide balance in the center-back pairing.

“This type of player makes sense when you look back at last year,” the source said, “[Harry] Maguire, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matič. They were all afterthoughts for Walker because he wanted range. That’s why he gave [Eric] Bailly and [Victor] Lindelöf so much run. Because they had more athletic ability, but even they weren’t up to his standards.”

Lacroix turned 22 in April and has plenty of time to grow and improve, precisely the type of player that Walker loved working with at Lille. Young, dynamic, filled with potential but needing the right coaching to reach the highest level.

Wolfsburg bought Lacroix from F.C. Sochaux for £4.2 million in 2020 and signed him to a 5-year contract. Given his contract will run for three more seasons, United is unlikely to get a discount. Transfermarkt currently lists his value at £32 million after an impressive season in the Bundesliga.

Lacroix started forty games last season, thirty of which came in the Bundesliga, six in the Champions League, and four in the DFB-Pokal. He helped Wolfsburg to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga this season.

Former West Brom Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone Signed His Contract With United

United kicked off their Annual Award Banquet by introducing new signing, Sam Johnstone (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United formally announced the signing of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion prior to their yearly award banquet. Johnstone joined West Brom in 2018 from United for a £6.5 million fee and spent four years with The Baggies before returning to Old Trafford. Johnstone was the number one goalkeeper for West Brom for the past four years.

“This is a dream opportunity coming to pass,” said Johnstone at the press conference, “I always dreamed of playing for United, of captaining United; these were the thoughts that made me want to play when I was a kid. I honestly thought that dream would end four years ago, but now that I have the chance to represent this club. It’s just the realization of a dream.”

Many thought that Johnstone would seek out an opportunity with a more straightforward chance at playing time in the Premier League. He started all 46 of West Brom’s games last season, keeping twelve clean sheets and recording impressive, advanced save numbers. Those numbers have earned him call-ups to The Three Lions, and they have now earned him the opportunity to return to Old Trafford.

“Sam’s a great keeper,” said Thomas Walker at the event, “He’s imposing. He’s quick and smart. He’s the type of player that will make incredible saves whenever called upon. In reality, we’re really quite lucky that he was drawn to us because there are a lot of top-level clubs that would be lucky to have him.”

Johnstone has been assured he will be given the opportunity to compete with David De Gea for the top job this summer. He will have the advantage of being Walker’s top choice keeper at the beginning of preseason. De Gea will miss the early weeks of preseason while he is with the Spanish National Team in Qatar.

Johnstone joins United on a two-year contract rumored to be worth around £42,000 per annum.

Manchester, England – Last night, Manchester United celebrated its Champions League-winning season at its annual awards banquet. The banquet starred Thomas Walker as host and featured a brief, controversial comment that sent the Twittersphere ablaze.

In his opening comments, with the club owners in attendance, Walker said the following: "We need to invest more into this team if we want to be the biggest club in the world. It's an elliptical that will only spin up and take this club to the highest point. That's where we should all want to be."

Walker was standing on the high ground following his recent Champions League title trophy sitting just in front of him on stage. Still, the comment was certainly taken as a dig at the Glazer's Family Ownership and their commitment, or lack thereof, to success. Aside from that one moment, United's Award Ceremony went to plan.

Just prior to the event, Manchester United officially signed new goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to a two-year contract and held a photo-op with the player in United’s new goalkeeper kit.

As far, as the event, the most unreserved praise was given to the senior team as a whole. The team won 41 of the 60 games they played this season under new Manager Thomas Walker for a 68%-win percentage. It's the most wins by the club in a single season since the 2008-09 season. The club also saw the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and his triumphant season that saw him reclaim the Premier League goal-scoring record. The club saw five academy players make their senior team debut this season, and several teenagers made significant impacts that gives the club the projection of a bright future.

Perhaps most importantly, the club won their first major trophy in five years when they defeated Bayern Munich on May 28th. It marked the end of a five-year period that began when José Mourinho held up the Europa League trophy in May of 2017.

The banquet also highlighted the impact of United's other teams. That includes the success of the Manchester United Women's Team, which finished fourth in the FA Super League. Forward Alessia Russo was awarded Women's Player of the Year. The 22-year-old English international scored nine goals and four assists in 22 games for the Lady Red Devils.

Shola Shoretire was awarded the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Award for his tremendous season in the Premier League 2. In the PL2, the UEFA Youth Cup, and the EFL Trophy Competition, Shoretire played 28 games, scored eight goals, and was credited with ten assists. That level of performance earned him five games in this year's FA Cup, and he performed well. For Thomas Walker's senior side, he made five appearances, scored three goals, and assisted on one other. His brace in a January 22nd FA Cup match against Newport County were his first two senior team goals.

The Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award was the night's big surprise. Despite a litany of attacking and midfield talent, the award instead went to Arthur MacKie, who plays primarily as a fullback. Those that followed the Under-18 team were surprised but not shocked to hear MacKie's name called. Despite primarily playing as a fullback, the youngster was comfortable playing in all ten outfield positions this season and has affectionately earned the nickname "All-11" for his versatility.

Between the U18 Premier League, the FA Youth Cup, the UEFA Youth League, and the Premier League 2, MacKie played in 31 games, scoring four goals and assisting on two others. But perhaps his best moment was as captain during United's FA Youth Cup Final Win. He was the first to hoist the trophy that returned United to the top status in youth soccer after a decade away.

"Arthur is a special player," said Thomas Walker, "who has a special future."

The night's final award was the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award. This one had no drama and brought no surprise. The award went to Cristiano Ronaldo for his tremendous season that lifted United to the heights they hadn't seen in nearly a decade. Across all competitions, Ronaldo made 50 appearances, scored 52 goals, and was credited with nineteen assists. He scored in each of United's Champions League knockout stage games and scored 34 Premier League goals to secure a new league record. He was not only United's best player but is now the runaway favorite to win the Ballon d'Or this year.

The announcement of Ronaldo as the winner marks his fourth time winning the Sir Matt Busby Award, which matches David De Gea for most since the award was established in 1988.
