Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

It's crazy how good Kent State has been in this dynasty even with punishments from the NCAA.

I have a feeling this will be a blowout, the defense for the Mellon Tartans has been excellent recently and Ohio will get shutdown.

I believe you're thinking about Toledo when it comes to NCAA-punished mid-major schools from Ohio who have blue and gold as their colors, haha. But with how good Kent State has been lately, maybe they're next to get sanctions?

Love your optimism about this game! Won't give too much away as I'm working on the recap, but I will say I was a bit disappointed with my defense's performance. That could be partially because of how long I went without playing though.

Definitely did have a juicy matchup! We'll see if I could take advantage.

Planning to have the recap up either later today or sometime tomorrow!

Tartans Red-Hot in Second Half, Beat Up Bobcats, 49-26
CMU sophomore quarterback Gerald Culver accounts for six touchdowns (5 pass, 1 rush) in return to MAC action

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- In a de facto elimination contest for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division title, Carnegie Mellon outscored Ohio, 28-6, in the second half to come away with a 49-26 victory over the Bobcats from Gesling Stadium.

Both Carnegie Mellon (5-5, 5-1 MAC) and Ohio (4-5, 3-2 MAC) entered the afternoon with one conference loss each, as they chase No. 25 and MAC-unbeaten Kent State in the standings. Bobcats runningback Vince Davidson became the first runningback since Maryland’s Da’Rel Scott on Nov. 14, 2009 to rush for over 200 yards against the Tartans, but the hosts withstood Davidson’s efforts thanks to a six-touchdown performance from new starting quarterback Gerald Culver.

“I’m really happy with our team after this one,” said CMU head coach Jules Nottingham. “We weren’t perfect by any means, but I thought our pass game was the best it showed all season, and our defense really buckled down in the second half. Gerald (Culver) had a lot riding on his shoulders after he earned the starting nod this week, and he excelled and never let it go to his head. This was a big game and one we had to have if we want to reach our goals this season.”

It took just 52 seconds for CMU to strike as, after an Ohio three-and-out, Kelvin Butler brought back the ensuing punt 72 yards to paydirt. The Bobcats responded with a Matt Schulte 36-yard field goal, but on their next drive Mark Toth forced a fumble on Davidson and it was recovered by Zac Hood on the visitors’ 18-yard line. On the next play, Culver threw his first of five touchdown passes by connecting with Travis Sledge to make it 14-3.

Ohio tacked on another field goal to cut into the deficit, then Davidson made up for his fumble in a big way by breaking away with a stiff-arm of Erik Sellers for an 88-yard touchdown to make it 14-13. The Bobcats then forced a red zone interception of Culver, and followed that up with a 10-play, 85-yard drive that concluded with another Davidson score. Ohio’s lead would only hold for 51 seconds however, as Culver came back and led a quick six-play, 71-yard drive that ended in a 29-yard strike to Eddie Williams with 12 seconds remaining in the half.

Culver carried that momentum into the Tartans’ first drive of the second half, finding Lawrence McIntire wide open on a wheel route for a 47-yard touchdown to make it 28-20. Davidson answered for the Bobcats with another long touchdown run – this one of 46 yards – but the two-point pass failed and kept CMU ahead. Williams then made a brilliant diving catch on fourth down to extend the Tartans next drive, and the hosts cashed in when Culver fooled the defense on the option and scored from 22 yards out.

Looking to take full control of the game, the Tartans defense bent on Ohio’s next trip but didn’t break, forcing an incompletion on fourth down to regain possession. That led to another touchdown drive on offense, with Culver finding Nate Satele out of the backfield for a 37-yard score to push the advantage to 42-26. Sellers then stripped LaVon Brazill after a catch to give CMU a chance at securing the win, and it did just that with Culver’s fifth touchdown pass – an 18-yard strike to Butler with 11:32 remaining.

Culver threw for 319 yards on 16-of-26 passing with the aforementioned five touchdowns, adding 53 yards on 13 carries and a score on the ground. Williams was his top target once again, finishing with six receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Davidson finished with 224 yards and three scores on 27 carries for the Bobcats.

Carnegie Mellon will enjoy a bye next week before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 19 for Senior Day against Western Michigan.

It might not have been a shutdown, but I knew I had a good feeling the Tartans would win this one big. A huge performance by Gerald Culver was probably his best, he accounted for probably 75% of the team's offense today. The defense didn't dominate like I thought they would but they did enough.

Culver's performance was really shocking because of his accuracy issues, but for whatever reason they didn't show up in this game and I was able to establish some dominance offensively with the passing attack. Davidson just had a special game for Ohio - he must have broken at least 15 tackles and his impact player icon was pulsating the entire time it seemed like. Not much I could do there, but the defense did limit their passing game and allow for it to be a comfortable win.

Vince Davidson really tore it up on the ground. Looked close until you blew it open in the 3rd. Ohio has some nice uniforms. Simple and clean.

East is looking so tough. Kent State, though.. wow

Ohio was always one of my favorite schools to do Road to Glory saves with growing up because of their unis and that they weren't a great team. I remember having a runningback named Tex Ranger () who I placed on Ohio and ended up winning two Heismans and having a 15-year NFL career.

Thankfully Davidson wasn't quite as good as Ranger was, and we were able to keep them within arm's length before blowing it open in the third. As for the rest of the MAC, Kent State looks fantastic and of course I don't get a chance to play them (stupid 13-team conference scheduling), so it will probably take a miracle to get to the MAC title game.

Culver named MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Following a stellar performance against Ohio, sophomore quarterback Gerald Culver was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Culver, who was making his second career start against the Bobcats, finished with 372 yards of total offense (319 passing, 53 rushing), six total touchdowns (5 passing, 1 rushing), and a single interception. The second-year signal-caller has a 156.7 quarterback rating this season with 1,051 passing yards, 13 touchdowns (11 passing, 2 rushing), and eight interceptions.

                            Tartans land four verbal commits
Carnegie Mellon’s official visit weekend proved to be a successful one, as it landed four key commitments for the Class of 2012.

The Tartans secured the pledges from four-star quarterback Eric Frederick (Brownsville, La.), four-star offensive tackle Andrew Graham (Forestville, Ohio), three-star defensive tackle Brian Adams (Naperville, Ill.), and three-star runningback Eric Pettit (Fort McKinley, Ohio) from the six recruits that made their official visits over the weekend.

Frederick, the coaching staff’s top target, mentioned that CMU didn’t originally have the prestige he was seeking, but he was “enamored” with the idea of being part of the team that brings the program to national relevance. The same reasoning can be said for Adams and Pettit, who mentioned about leading the Tartans to the next level.

Graham’s key recruiting pitch was playing time, which he desired and will likely get with the graduation of Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker at both offensive tackles.

Williams gives soft verbal to CMU, will visit Clemson this weekend
Four-star defensive tackle Mario Williams (no relation to the Houston Texans’ defensive end) has given a soft verbal commitment to Carnegie Mellon following his visit, but plans to take an official visit to Clemson this weekend.

Williams, a four-star prospect from Lombard, Ill., really enjoyed his official visit to Pittsburgh but believes he should take all his official visits before making a decision. He lists the Tartans as the favorite for his services above Tennessee and Clemson, with the intention of spending a weekend with the Tigers and the Volunteers over the next two Saturdays.

                            Sharp commits to Oklahoma
It wasn’t all good news for Carnegie Mellon on its official visit weekend, as three-star cornerback Jason Sharp (Bartow, Fla.) decided to commit to Oklahoma after his visit to Pittsburgh.

Sharp entered the weekend with the Tartans second on his list between Oklahoma and Miami (Fla.). He was reported as saying that he loved the location of CMU’s campus, but ultimately his connection with the Sooners’ coaching staff and his enjoyment of his official visit there swayed him in that direction.

Cornerback will be a priority in the off-season recruiting period, with the Tartans missing on both of their in-season targets in Sharp and Ron Williams (Wooster, Ohio).
