        2022 SEASON
        POST-SEASON

Well unfortunately due to the changes to the playoffs, that means less spots for teams to play in a bowl game. We fell victim to the changes as we didn't get an invite to a bowl game, despite our 9-3 record. Coach didn't seem to pleased and voiced his anger to the CFP board about it. We finished the year #25 in the CFP Rankings and still didn't get a bowl invite? Something didn't seem right about all of that.

Coach called a meeting with the staff to discuss what could possibly happen after bowl season is over. I'm sure he was going to address the Coaching Carousel, a lot of schools have already fired their coaches and began searching for a new one.

CIGNETTI It's that time of year where schools will be reaching out to try and hire whoever they can to be their new head coach. I'm here to tell all of you, don't waste the opportunity. If you get an offer to be a head coach, then please consider it. Don't let the opportunity pass by without thinking about it. This is what we are all here for is to be a head coach some day and I won't blame you one bit if you move on from here to be a head coach. So please if you get an offer, please please PLEASE consider it and let me know.

            2023 SEASON
            PRE-SEASON

It is a dream come true. Only my 2nd year in college football coaching and I was offered the head coaching job at Akron! I happily accepted it right away and go to work on who I should hire as my Offensive & Defensive Coordinator. We had a lot of work to do as we were taking over a 1-11 team from the MAC.

I decided to hire Barry Lunney Jr from Illinois. They had just let their entire staff go after a 2-10 season in the Big Ten and I decided to hop on this opportunity quickly. As for my Defensive Coordinator, I was able to hire Brandon Bailey from Buffalo. He runs a unique defensive scheme that I believe will help us spark some life into this team this season.

After arriving on campus we called a team meeting so we can get on the same page with everyone going into the season.

Coach Franks I just want to start out by saying we are honored to be your coaches this upcoming season. We understand we have a lot of work to do and we are going to do our best to get you guys ready to have an amazing season this year. We were told the atmosphere kinda stunk with the last staff and we are going to change that. We aren't here to run you into the ground when you lose, we are here to fix things when we do lose so we can do them right and win games. We hope you guys can fully trust us and go in 100% for this team this season. Our football schedule should be coming out sometime today and we will get to work as soon as we are allowed to.

                2023 SEASON
                WEEK 2 VS ARKANSAS STATE

It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. Running on to the field as the Head Coach of a collegiate football program for the first time in my career. We worked hard all summer long to get ready for this moment and we didn't disappoint. In fact, they surprised me tonight. We dominated Arkansas State from the opening kickoff and I don't know where this all came from.

We completely ripped them a part on defense forcing 5 turnovers with two of them being scores. Our offense did what they could against this defense and was able to produce us some more points, but the defense was the star tonight. We ended with 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries.

The final horn sounded and the home crowd celebrated. I was walking to mid field to shake hands with Coach when suddenly I became drenched in water. They players got me with the water bath as they all celebrated with glee on the field. It was a moment this school and fanbase has been waiting for. Something to give them hope for the season, I just hope we can build upon this win and keep it going for this season. We have Ohio State in a couple of weeks and I don't need them looking ahead now. That's a HUGE challenge that I don't think we are ready for, but we need to keep working.

First career win feels great. We went into the locker rooms and AD Guthrie greeted me and shook my hand and congratulated me on the win. He told me that he was looking forward to the rest of the season. Inside the locker room, the celebration continued. I got the team's attention and it was time to address them:

COACH FRANKS I don't know how I can describe to you just how proud I am of each and every one of you. Every media outlet picked us to lose this game. We were a 28 point underdog in Vegas, and I think we might of made some people big cash tonight. Defense you guys played lights out, I think you surprised us with everything. Offense you guys were playing in sync and making plays when we needed them. There is one person that we are going to give the game ball to, and I think he might even make ESPN Player of the Week with what he did tonight. Adetutu Daranijo, the game ball is yours with your two defensive scores tonight....Congratulations!!

                    2023 SEASON
                    WEEK 3 @ #2 OHIO STATE

As a coach, you want to be bias and say your team has a shot at winning every game no matter the size of the challenge. We are playing the defending National Champions, so it's really hard to sit here and say that we do have a shot. They won the National Championship for a reason. My goal for this game was that these guys stay competitive as long as they could against Ohio State.

We spent the first couple days of the week watching film on C.J. Stroud and Treveyon Henderson. I had good faith we would be able to stop their rushing attack, but that would require us to give up some stuff in the passing game. On the offensive side of the ball, I didn't see any reason we couldn't get the ball rolling on the ground early on. We prepped for every scenario and we came to an agreement that they would play hard and not hang their head no matter what happened on the field.

What happened on the field today though, is something that even I didn't see coming. We started the game off by intercepting a pass from Stroud and set us up pretty nicely, but we couldn't finish the drive and settled for a field goal. Still we were winning against defending National Champions!!! So I would say everyone at this point would say that Ohio State was about to open up a can on us now that we angered them, but that wasn't the case!

We would take a 13-0 LEAD into halftime!!! The team was so fired up at halftime we had to take a few minutes to let everyone calm down and then I had to bring them back to reality. I told them there were still two quarters left of football. If they wanted this upset they needed to go out and play like they did the first two quarters and not let up.

Ohio State eventually came back and took the lead and I was expecting the team to hang their heads and give up and say "Well we did what we could", but that didn't happen. There were players screaming on the sidelines firing everyone up saying this game ain't over yet and we needed to get back to work. Cory Smigel was able to tie the game up and send us into overtime. Cory had 15 points on the day and he's the one that kept us in it with his automatic leg.

Overtime came and our defense must of hit a huge second wind. That first possession for Ohio State was probably one of their worst all day. We broke through the line of scrimmage each time and got them in the backfield to force them to kick a field goal which would leave us with the task of having to score a touchdown to win. One thing I didn't expect was D.J. Irons to have a wide open Brank on a slant route to set us up with Goal to go set of downs. Then we just had a read option called and Irons read it perfect and kept it himself and got into the end zone to secure one of the biggest upsets in College Football history. I'm going to say this is bigger than App State beating Michigan.

                        2023 SEASON
                        WEEK 4 VS. TOLEDO

My heart broke for this team. It was a sloppy game all the way around for both teams. It was raining hard and it made it hard to move the ball at times. The game ended with the biggest heart break I have ever seen. Toledo had just tied it up late in the game and we would get the ball back to try and win it on final drive or go into overtime.

On the kickoff return, we would fumble the ball and give it back to Toledo who would then set themselves up for the game winning field goal and drilled it. Nothing to be ashamed about, there was mistakes by both teams. Playing conditions were not ideal, so there isn't really anything we can be upset about. We just have to learn to take the L and get back to work to bounce back.

Yeah it kinda stinks to lose a game after getting a HUGE upset against Ohio State, but that is how College Football is. Any given Saturday, things can happen that people may not expect. I'm going to have to ask Lee Corso to pick against us every week. We are undefeated when he picks the other team.
