NBA History Revisited: 1983- (NBA 2k23)

This dynasty will be done in MyNBA Eras in 2k23 starting with the Magic and Bird Era which begins in the 1983-84 NBA season. It differs as I'm going to play through history as it happened and see how things play out in the game when set up with the same situations as real life. This means I will be playing in commissioner mode and making all the transactions, lineup changes, injuries and draft picks as they happened in real life. Will 2k have things spot on? Will a team who underperformed in real life take a leap and change history?

As far as playing games I use a random number generator to pick a game to play from each day. With this mode having correct schedules for each team I'll control the team that won the game in real life to try to keep things accurate for that game. I'll be making posts for each date on the calendar with the nights results, news stories from around the league, even some real life news and pop culture happenings on that date. I use the New York Times archives quite often and will have that assist me in giving the readers backstory into why things are happening around the league instead of just random injuries, benchings and roster moves.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Can Anybody Stop The Champs?
The 1983-84 NBA season is just days from tipoff and the question on everybody's mind is if anybody can dethrone the defending champions, The Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are coming off a completely dominating run in last season's playoffs as the fierce duo of league MVP Moses Malone and Julius Erving lead the champions to a 12-1 record in the playoffs, including a 4-0 sweep against the banged up Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Dr. J and Moses come back to try to be the first team to defend their championship since the 1969 Celtics championship team.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Season Starts With Replacement Referees
A big story from the offseason is the NBA referees striking against the league to get a bigger piece of the quickly growing NBA financial pool. An unnamed referee said that with Larry Bird getting a multimillion dollar contract in the offseason the referees are left to pick up pennies in comparison. With the referees currently striking the preseason games were more reminiscent of the Wild West, highlighted by a fist fight between the Celtics Larry Bird and Sixers power forward Marc Iavoaroni. Will the NBA strike a deal with the referees to make sure this all important season goes off without a hitch?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ralph Sampson Arrives With Large Expectations
One of the most exciting number one picks in the history of the NBA Draft comes into the league this season as 7 foot 4 center from the University of Virginia, Ralph Sampson will make his debut in the league. Sampson was completely dominant in college basketball and before he even steps onto the floor he is drawing comparisons to young versions of Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Sampson looks to immediately become the focus of the young and talented Houston Rockets as they look to take a step up in the West and give the Lakers some serious competition.

          Headlines

Defending Champs Win After Ring Ceremony
The Philadelphia 76ers began their defense of the 1982-83 World Championship by holding a ring ceremony before the game where Moses Malone, Julius Erving and company received their championship rings to symbolize their hard work from the year before. Their new season started in a battle against the Washington Bullets and Jeff Ruland, who posted the first triple-double of the new season. The 76ers were able to hold onto a one point victory in the end, 87-86. Andrew Toney led the way with 23 points, but it was Moses Malone carrying the team in the defensive struggle as he had 25 rebounds and blocked 3 shots on opening night in his defense of the MVP he was awarded last season.

Pistons Defeat Celtics in Triple Overtime
The Boston Celtics have huge expectations leading into the new season, with many people picking them ahead of the defending champion 76ers in the loaded Atlantic Division. They hit a speed bump in Detroit on opening night though as they fell 151-145 in a triple overtime game. Isiah Thomas and Vinnie Johnson each posted 36 points in the triple overtime game, but the turning point came when Larry Bird fouled out with plenty of time left in the game. The Pistons took advantage of one of the league’s best being on the bench and were able to move to 1-0 on the season.

Dan Issel Rewarded With New Contract During Halftime
Denver Nuggets Center Dan Issel has been one of the franchises all-time greatest players as he approaches many milestones in his age 35 season. The Nuggets have decided to not drag out the decision if he will return next season early as they held a cermony at halftime of their opening night victory against the Jazz where Issel signed his contract for the 1984-85 season. Issel followed up that historic night with another big night as the Nuggets went to 2-0 against the Clippers and Issel had 29 points and 9 rebounds in a game that saw Alex English put up a triple double.

Ralph Sampson Looks Strong in Debut Loss
The talk of the NBA offseason was the number one overall pick, 7 foot 4 center Ralph Sampson coming into the league. The big man offers a mix of imposing size and defense while possessing some great moves on the offensive end as well. As an individual his debut game went well as he had a double double with 24 points and 10 rebounds as well as adding 4 blocks. The Rockets didn’t fare as well though as they were run out of the gym by George Gervin and the Spurs 125-95.

Lakers Move to 2-0, Celtics Start at 0-2
Two popular picks for the NBA Finals have started in different directions through the first two nights of the season. To start the night the Celtics lost a surprising game to the Cavaliers by 5. Larry Bird performed better in this game but they were no doubt struggling with tired legs coming off of a triple overtime loss the night before. The Lakers took the court later in the evening and looked in total control of the Jazz. Magic Johnson controlled the offense like few can and had 22 points and 14 assists. Several were to top scorer for the night Jamaal Wilkes who posted 25 points. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was slowed slightly on offense by emerging defensive presence Mark Eaton as he only had 14 points. But Kareem can control the game in other ways and added 16 rebounds and 6 blocks.

SuperSonics Get Trio of Double Doubles in Rout
The Seattle SuperSonics rolled into Kemper Arena in Kansas City heavy favorites against the Kings, and they did not disappoint as they trounced the home team by 28 points. The Sonics were lead by one of the most productive big three’s in the NBA as they all three put up double doubles in this game. Center Jack Sikma led the way with 28 points and 20 rebounds. His front court mate Tom Chambers added 26 points and 11 rebounds of his own. The man who runs the offense, Gus Williams, added 20 points and dished out 11 assists, mainly to the two big men. The game wasn’t a contest for most of it as the Sonics came out running against a Kansas City team that lacks a real offensive threat and will likely struggle until that is addressed.

Spurs Win Game in Battle of Texas
The Dallas Mavericks came into San Antonio hoping that the duo of Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman would be able to power them past the veteran led Spurs team, but it wasn’t to be as the Spurs were running and gunning to a 131-108 victory. The Spurs were led by scorer extraordinaire George Gervin, who put up 31 points in the victory. The Iceman provided the scoring while Artis Gilmore showed why he’s one of the best defenders in the paint as he scooped up 15 rebounds in addition to adding 20 points down low. Of the three Texas teams this year the Spurs seemed like the ones most poised to make a run now, while the Mavericks and Rockets look to build on impressive young cores.

Nets PG Walker Injured, Sign Mark Jones
The New Jersey Nets signed PG Foots Walker to lead their second unit this season, but that plan has quickly gone sour as Walker injured his knee in the first game of the season. Dr. Kim Sloan, the Nets orthopedist has said that Walker has strained ligaments and will need four weeks of rest. The Nets responded by signing rookie PG Mark Jones, who started the season in Knicks training camp but didn’t make the team. Jones was drafted from St. Bonaventure and averaged 18.1 and 16.4 points his last two years of college. Nets coach Stan Albeck said that he liked what he saw in rookie camp and preseason out of Jones and wanted to give him a shot to see what he’s capable of in the NBA.

Even though the month was less than a week worth of games the NBA has given out its October players of the month. They went to the same players who won the player of the week awards. In the Eastern Conference Clark Kellogg of the Pacers won the award on the back of a 50 point game in the second game of the season. In the Western Conference big man of the SuperSonics Jack Sikma was given the award after scoring 27.5 points per game and grabbing 17 rebounds per game.

Hawks Get Tree Rollins and Johnny Davis Back
The Atlanta Hawks figured to get a lot better on Tuesday night as they got back two of the key cogs to their starting lineup in center Tree Rollins and point guard Johnny Davis. Davis was delayed in preparing for the season, and Rollins was suspended two games for his role in a postseason fight last year with the Celtics where he punched Danny Ainge and then tried to bite his finger off. Hide your hands the big man is patrolling the paint again in the ATL. The Hawks will likely take some time to mesh again though as they got blown out by the winless Bullets.

                    Richardson Released From Hospital
The New Jersey Nets and the NBA as a whole received good news today as star guard Michael Ray Richardson was released from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment for his substance abuse issues that have plagued him throughout his young career. Richardson is said to be doing well and is looking forward to getting back into basketball shape and hopes to join the Nets later in the season for a team that already looks great after a 3-0 start.

                      Lonnie Shelton Fined By League
Cavaliers forward Lonnie Shelton was fined $2,500 by the NBA on Wednesday after he started a fight with Nets’ big man Buck Williams on Tuesday night. Shelton was clearly the aggressor and threw the first punch, which led to the league giving him the fine. Neither man will be suspended because of the scuffle which the league’s replacement referees handled on the floor.

Lakers Come Back to Stay Unbeaten
The Los Angeles Lakers got quite the scare against the winless San Diego Clippers in a battle of Southern California as they were in a back and forth game against the team lead by second year star Terry Cummings. The Clippers fed the ball to Cummings early and often as he took the fight to fellow sophomore to the league, James Worthy. Eventually it turned out the Lakers had too much firepower as Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stepped up in the fourth quarter and overcame a six point deficit to end up winning by 5 after Clipper SG Craig Hodges missed a late three to tie, then Mike McGee hit two free throws to lead to the final score of 111-106.

                      Stipanovich Takes His Game Inside
While Ralph Sampson has garnered all the attention in the early NBA season for the new batch of rookies, the second pick of the draft from the University of Missouri, Steve Stipanovich has been impressing fans in the early goings. Stipanovich is a 6’11 center and already seems poised to take the fight to the many veteran big men in the NBA. Through 3 games he’s averaging 8.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists, and over a block a game. He’s teamed with October Player of the Month Clark Kellogg to start the Pacers off with a 2-1 record and given them hopes of a run at the Central Division crown in the near future.

                        Views Vary on Fill-In Referees
The NBA season is well into its second week and there is still no sign that the official NBA referees will return anytime soon. The replacement referees have gone unnoticed in most games, but there have been glaring missed calls and overstepping their bounds in others. The latest news saw the referee’s union file a complaint with the National Labor Board as they feel the NBA is using unfair and intimidating tactics to try to force the referees to return to work without giving in to their demands.

                        Nuggets Mix Up Lineup
The Denver Nuggets have gotten off to a great start to the year. Before tonight’s game they were a perfect 3-0, but coach Doug Moe wanted to test out theories at the start of the year and mixed up the lineup against a team they should beat, the Kansas City Kings. To the bench were stars Kiki Vandeweghe and Dan Issel, even though they came off the bench early and still played around 30 minutes each. The experiment seemed to be successful as the Nuggets won and went to 4-0, and top scorer Alex English had his best game of the year putting up 37 points in the game.

76ers and Spurs Complete Season’s First Trade
The trade market is officially open in the 1983-84 season as the Philadelphia 76ers and the San Antonio Spurs made the first swap of the year. It was one that isn’t earth shaking by any means as the 76ers sent C Mark McNamera to the Spurs for their 2nd round pick in 1988. McNamera hasn’t hit the floor this season and looks to give the Spurs some depth behind Artis Gilmore. In response to adding the center the Spurs have waived C Darrell Lockhart to stay under the roster limit.

Bucks Top Sixers as Johnson Continues Great Start
The Milwaukee Bucks moved to 3-1 on the season as they beat the defending champion 76ers to send them to 2-2. Sidney Moncrief is without a doubt the leader of the Bucks team, but it has been the play of Marques Johnson that has been carrying the team to their current success. During this stretch he has had games of scoring 49 and 45 points on the way to a 32.3 point per game scoring pace. While Johnson was an all-star last season this output wasn’t expected and could make the Bucks very dangerous this season if he’s able to score at this clip.

                          Lanier Fined For Laimbeer Punch
The replacement referees had their hands full with another fight, this one happening earlier in the week when the Bucks played the Pistons. Bill Laimbeer has been known to get under the skin of opposing players and he did that to the wrong man in Bob Lanier. The two were fighting for boards all night long, but Laimbeer poked the big man a little too much and after an aggressive move towards Lanier he found himself getting rocked by a right hand by the Bucks center. The parties were separated and cooler heads prevailed, but Lanier has been given a $5000 fine for his heavy right hand, a fine many feel was completely worth the money.

NBA To Meet With Referees on Monday
Speaking of the replacement referees, their days could be numbered on the NBA court. The referee’s association has decided to meet with the lawyers for the NBA in New York City on Monday, hoping to find some middle ground to get them back to work. The NBA is known for having the best officials in the world, and fans and players alike are ready for them to return to action sooner rather than later.

                            Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Autobiography Published
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, along with writer Peter Knobler have written a story telling the life of Kareem, who was born Lew Alcindor. It is a no holds barred look at careers upbringing, experimenting with drugs at UCLA while having one of the most dominant college careers of all-time, to become that man that will likely become the league’s all-time leading scorer by the end of the 1983-84 season. The book is titled Giant Steps and is available at most retailers.

                            76ers Hand Nets First Loss
The New Jersey Nets have been rolling to start the season, even without star point guard Michael Ray Richardson back in the fold yet. They started off 4-0 but that run came to an end tonight when they ran into the defending world champion Philadelphia 76ers and the duo of Dr. J and Moses Malone. Erving put in 36 points while Moses had 25 points and grabbed an astonishing 26 rebounds. The Nets may have a better record to start the season but if the 76ers play like they did tonight not many teams in either conference will be able to match what they can do.

Lakers and Nuggets Both Remain Unbeaten
In the Western Conference the class of the field has been the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets. The Lakers come as no surprise as they feature as star studded of a team as the NBA has ever seen. The Nuggets came as a surprise to most though. Everyone knew they could score with anybody with the trio of English, Vandeweghe and Issel, but they have been holding up their end on defense to start off rolling at 5-0. Magic Johnson put up a triple double against the Mavericks in tonight’s Lakers victory. For the Nuggets they went back to the regular lineup to defeat the San Diego Clippers.

                              Gervin’s 43 Leads Spurs Comeback
The San Antonio Spurs hosted the Seattle SuperSonics on Sunday in what turned out to be a fiercely fought back and forth game that saw the lead change hands several times. Gus Williams exploded for 16 points in the 3rd quarter alone to give the Sonics the lead heading into the final quarter. George Gervin wasn’t going to let this go quietly though and scored 17 of his own in the 4th quarter to inch the Spurs back past the Sonics and on their way to a 116-109 victory. Gervin ended the night with 43 points and he looks like he is primed to lead the Spurs on to a successful season in the Midwest Division.

                              Bucks Continue to Look Strong
The Milwaukee Bucks have started as one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference as they went to 4-1 on the season with a win over the young Atlanta Hawks. Sidney Moncrief showed his scoring prowess as he put up 40 points in the victory. The Bucks have been playing the long game with Moncrief this season by managing his minutes in the fast paced early season schedule, even sitting him out a game earlier in the week as part of a back to back. He showed that the extra rest could be working as the Hawks had no answer for him as he continues to pull the Bucks up the NBA’s power rankings.
