Does EA Sports College Football opens the door for College Hoops 2k Revival

With EA Sports bringing back College Football what's the chances that we get College Hoops 2k revised at some point in the next few years? I have no knowledge here but if NCAA March Madness comes back before College Hoops does I'll be deeply saddened.

Has the player likeness hurdles in college sports been officially cleared for video games to be produced?

I don't expect either college basketball game to return unless they find a way to generate a desired level of revenue through MTX.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Unless the License is cheaper there will never be another college 2k basketball game again🤷
The License was too pricey and not hitting their sales mark is the reason they stop making college basketball

I kinda doubt it. I will say, I'd lay down $200 for a new CH2K. No questions asked.

I am personally bullish despite others sentiment. Here is my reasoning and hope for the future.

          1. The game can be packaged unlike prior versions. For example, NBA 2k could package in the College Game with their installment and vice versa. Connecting the two games from a MyPlayer standpoint could be very lucrative as you’ll see in bullet #2

          2. MyPlayer VC could be a great way to bridge revenue gaps that were an issue from 2006-2009 during the final phases of College Basketball games

          3. It has been 13+ years now, there is a thirst for a college game and consoles and availability for downloads are so much better now than before and would open up a massive market imo

          4. And finally, I would expect the licensing being done by EA Sports with College Football should lay a good ground work of what things will cost and how it needs to be done. Their success in 2024 with their release will tell us whether or not a game will come. Personally I’d be surprised if no one takes a chance on college basketball and although it may not come until 2025-26, I expect a comeback at some point

I don't see EA March Madness coming back until NBA Live comes back. I don't see them developing a new basketball engine just for college basketball game.

It'll obviously be easier for 2k to use it's engine and assets. But 2k dropped out of CHoops because of sales. I don't think College Basketball games will sell well. College Football is more popular throughout the season compared to CBB when the focus is on March Madness.

EA has an unused basketball engine as of now which is interesting. And for them to compete against NBA 2k would be risky imo. College basketball is not as popular as football but let’s also consider college football is second to only the NFL in popularity in the USA. Obviously college basketball is a harder sell, but 13 years without a game will bring a lot of people in imo.

I agree. College Basketball regular season is as popular as its most marketable player. When Zion was at Duke, more people were tuning into regular season games.

2k is better suited for College basketball. The popularity of NBA 2k should help. Heck the revenue from MtTX from NBA 2k can supplement CHOOPs. CFB will obviously sell better, but even that's likely just 2-4 M copies after the first couple years. CHoops almost has to be treated like a passion project thar you aren't dependent on the revenue

Agreed. I think the goal of returning to college sports is soak up revenue early and do it via licensing that is as least expensive as possible. 2k in particular is well positioned and would have such great integration potential with NBA. Here is to hoping and praying.

All good points. They could just make the College Basketball game a tie-in to MyNBA like MHammer stated.

If College Hoops 2k was an almost necessary experience to get the most out of MyCareer and MyNBA that would solidify buys from those user bases.

It could also solve a few complaints and legacy issues. Imagine not having to deal with NBA 2k's generic draft classes anymore for your MyNBA saves? Imagine getting your MyPlayer to an 80 overall and becoming the #1 pick in the draft through your play in college?

It would be the most complete basketball experience ever.

EA should bring back Coach K and take advantage of being the only college basketball on the market and wouldn't be in competition with 2k

Just put a new engine from scratch and take your time with it no pressure 👍

This to me is the biggest upside. A complete basketball experience from high school through the NBA with VC. If they can’t make money off that, I’d be shocked

I get that, but I still don't think it'll sell well enough to devote those resources for it. The demand for a new CBB game is nowhere near where it is for the new CFB game. For me, it still doesn't make sense unless Live is coming back too.

But, I still think NCAA Basketball 10 had one of the best in game presentation broadcast in sports games.

I wish they would bring it back, even if its not an annual release. I know why they cancelled it before, but I think the market is much greater now than it was in '07, for 2k.

2k and Live were still kind of competitive, at that time. College Hoops was prior to the 2K11 rise, and eventual smothering of EA basketball, and there is no March Madness to take a chunk out of their sales either. They're selling 5-6x the amount of copies of modern NBA 2k's that they were in 2007 (correct me on this, if I'm wrong. This was at glance, but gaming through both eras feels accurate.)

NBA 2K sales are competitive with Madden through last gen and into the current gen. And probably towards the end of 360/PS3 era even. That was unfathomable, when College Hoops was being released.

I'm not saying that College Hoops sales would rise 1-to-1 with NBA 2k's, or anything, as NBA 2k is able to sell internationally, where College Hoops would have a much higher percentage of sales in the US vs total, but I still think it would sell much better today than it did then, as it was made prior to the NBA 2k boom.

I agree with this 100%. Since the infrastructure for a basketball game is built, the investment would be in licensing and creating a college basketball atmosphere and game. I would venture to guess even selling 25-30% of NBA sales would lead to a reasonable profit for 2K. The market is so much bigger now than in 2007 and NBA 2K itself is actually the perfect marketing tool to build interest in a college game.

I think a ton of these hypotheticals will be based upon EAs success and processing of College Footbal. They’re going to be the first to deal with new licensing, marketing and integration with a pro game (Madden) in the same genre.
