Nice break down. I think this something you could do weekly. I've always missed this king of breakdown

              That's awesome!!!

One player that is driving me nuts is Ben Simmons. He shouldn't be able to dunk the way he's dunking. I'm happy with his current rating drop. But I posted with him this afternoon after the release and it's the same ****. Yes dunking like LeBron still.

There were a few drops that I was really happy to see. I also realize there is a balancing after the the trade deadline. Like Thomas Bryant on Denver.

Cam Thomas isn't easy to show with as a 40 three games in a row.

Removed Paul Reed from the rotation on the Sixers, Korkmaz was supposed to go in place of Dedman not Paul.

Aside from the badge stuff (which I do each update), this is just using the list Pete posted.

One player that is driving me nuts is Ben Simmons. He shouldn't be able to dunk the way he's dunking. I'm happy with his current rating drop. But I posted with him this afternoon after the release and it's the same ****. Yes dunking like LeBron still.
Simmons had his dunking badges removed back in November.

                  Simmons Dunk stats
                  2021: 85 Dunks in 1877 mins (1.63 per 36)
                  2023: 32 Dunks in 1105 mins (1.04 per 36)

What's deceptive about this is Simmons has changed positions. He spends way more time at center now which should be increasing his dunk rate.

It's a bit tricky as Simmons was far from a traditional PG (basically the best "standing dunk" "PG" in history. Part of the problem is 2K just doesn't handle dunking well.

Based on his line, as a center, I'd probably have like 70/70 Driving/Standing. He's one of the few guys where you'd really need to watch his dunk tape (or look at "driving dunk" data on NBA.com), maybe he's 75/65, maybe he's 65/75.

There were a few drops that I was really happy to see. I also realize there is a balancing after the the trade deadline. Like Thomas Bryant on Denver.
Bryant never should have been that high to begin with. Every era has an Enes Kanter. This roster team is so *** backwards where they only update scorers when that's probably the least important aspect of basketball for the vast majority of players.

Cam Thomas isn't easy to show with as a 40 three games in a row.
Cam should serve as an example that most ANYONE can produce in the NBA when given shots and minutes. We regularly see stuff like this in late March and April. The Nets are about to get this from Mikal Bridges who also does like ten different things outside of volume scoring. Most of the accounting on Cam is frankly Badges & Ratings he should have already had from the jump. He's the ultimate regular season player in that he can fill in when a star gets hurt, but isn't good enough at anything else to justify a regular role when the stars are up to speed.

                    Simmons Dunk Stats (Per NBA.com)
                    Alley Oop: 10-12 FG
                    Cutting: 6-6 FG
                    Driving: 2-3 FG
                    Driving Reverse: 0-0 FG
                    Dunk Shot: 6-7 FG
                    Putback: 1-1 FG
                    Reverse Dunk: 0-0 FG
Running Alley Oop: 2-2 FG (I presume these would be "Driving" and the other Alleys likely "Standing")
                    Running Dunk Shot: 1-2 FG
                    Tip Dunk 4-4 FG

Some of the descriptions are a bit wonky. Based on this I would presume his profile is mostly Standing Dunks (Having more Tip Dunks than Driving Dunks is certainly a tell).

Can confirm "Alley Oop" is basically Standing Alley. Just watched 20 Simmons dunks and they were all essentially Standing.

One more data point from the dunk stats is Assist rate. Simmons has been assisted on 81% of his Dunks this year (note that Tips & Putbacks are unassisted, and thus not off the dribble). In 2021 he was assisted on only 51% of his Dunks, so surely a lot more of those were off the bounce.

Simmons has an 86 Driving Dunk, 83 Standing, which is basically what he's had the last 5 years or so. I think I would land 65/75, maybe 65/80. In 2021 I had 85/75.

15 minutes on the subway and yet all of this is way more research on Dunking than Mike has put in on his 9-10 years on the job (HT: reading my work post-mortem doesn't count as "research").

                      Re: NBA 2K23 Roster Update - 2.17.23 - 7th Ratings Update

Friday Night Flex since I got out of work early today. Let's do all the Nets Dunk ratings. The time is 11:25pm as I start writing this out.

                      2K Driving/Standing
                      86/83 Ben Simmons (C): 32 Dunks in 1105 Mins (1.03 per 36)
                      84/40 Dorian Finney-Smith (PF): 24 Dunks in 1407 Mins (0.61 per 36)
                      80/50 Edmond Sumner (PG): 9 Dunks in 669 Mins (0.48 per 36)
                      75/40 Mikal Bridges (SG): 26 Dunks in 2139 Mins (0.43 per 36)
                      75/80 Nicolas Claxton (C): 137 Dunks in 1592 Mins (1.94 per 36)
                      75/50 Cam Thomas (SG): 3 Dunks in 679 Mins (0.15 per 36)
                      70/55 Royce O'Neale (PF): 4 Dunks in 1837 Mins (0.07 per 36)
                      70/75 Day'Ron Sharpe (C): 20 Dunks in 327 Mins (2.20 per 36)
                      60/60 Cam Johnson (SF): 6 Dunks in 518 Mins (0.41 per 36)
                      60/40 Yuta Watanabe (PF): 11 Dunks in 772 Mins (0.51 per 36)
                      60/40 David Duke (SG): 1 Dunk in 141 Mins (0.25 per 36)
                      55/35 Spencer Dinwiddie (PG): 12 Dunks in 1946 Mins (0.22 per 36)
                      45/25 Joe Harris (SF): 0 Dunks in 1215 Mins (0.0 per 36)
                      45/40 Dru Smith (PG): 0 Dunks in 97 Mins (0.0 per 36)
                      36/25 Seth Curry (SG): 0 Dunks in 914 Mins (0.0 per 36)
                      25/25 Patty Mills (PG): 0 Dunks in 479 Mins (0.0 per 36)

Okay, first off, Standing Dunk ratings are a ****ing mess. You have Power Forwards like Yuta (6'8" / 215) and DFS (6'7" / 220) with 40 SD and guards like Edmond Sumner (6'4" / 196) and Cam Thomas (6'3" / 210) with 50 SD. Standing Dunk COUNTS TOWARDS OVERALL RATING NOW. These idiots **** around with Intangibles all day rather than just clean up their own sloppy spreadsheet (shameless plug: get access to mine for $20).

From here, let's break things up by position. Different positions (roles) generate different types of dunks. Guards will obviously generate more On-Ball / Driving Dunks, while bigs are much more commonly off-ball.

                      BIGS
                      86/83 Ben Simmons (C): 32 Dunks in 1105 Mins (1.03 per 36)
                      75/80 Nicolas Claxton (C): 137 Dunks in 1592 Mins (1.94 per 36)
                      70/75 Day'Ron Sharpe (C): 20 Dunks in 327 Mins (2.20 per 36)

I already outlined Simmons as a 65/75. Tape was watched. He was mostly Standing Dunks. Do we think the Nets other bigs are any different? Hell no. These guys have double his dunk rate. From doing my datawork, I know that 2.0 per 36 is about the average for a rim rolling center. The absolute elites are 4+ per 36. Does 2K know this? Hell no. They just go through the motions year after year without putting in any effort to learn about the sport they work on.

2K's Starting Center averages are 75 Driving and 80 Standing. So let's leave Claxton as is (though it bear's noting last season he had 88 Dunks in 974 mins, 3.25 per 36, which I'd rate much higher). Sharpe, let's give him +10 Standing.

                      WINGS
                      84/40 Dorian Finney-Smith (PF): 24 Dunks in 1407 Mins (0.61 per 36)
                      75/40 Mikal Bridges (SG): 26 Dunks in 2139 Mins (0.43 per 36)
                      70/55 Royce O'Neale (PF): 4 Dunks in 1837 Mins (0.07 per 36)
                      60/60 Cam Johnson (SF): 6 Dunks in 518 Mins (0.41 per 36)
                      60/40 Yuta Watanabe (PF): 11 Dunks in 772 Mins (0.51 per 36)
                      45/25 Joe Harris (SF): 0 Dunks in 1215 Mins (0.0 per 36)

The average starting PF is 75/65 while the average starting SF is 75/50.

Most wings hover between 0.4 to 0.6 dunks per 36.

It might seem comical that Royce is on par w/ Bridges as a dunker, but he's usually better than this. I had O'Neale at SG w/ the KD Nets (why positions are important!) so that surely accounts for his decline (worth watching to see if his rate goes up now that he'll be playing more 4 on the Bridges Nets).

Bridges for his part spends more time on-ball than the rest of these guys. He already had a higher on-ball usage w/ the Suns this year than he typically does, so I don't anticipate his rates changing much w/ the Nets.

DFS was a much more prolific dunker 5 years ago. He's 29 now. This is the problem when you don't update athleticism ratings more than once every 6 years.

                      I have:
                      75/50 DFS
                      70/45 Bridges
                      65/55 Yuta
                      65/45 Cam
                      55/40 Royce
                      35/35 Harris

                      GUARDS
                      80/50 Edmond Sumner (PG): 9 Dunks in 669 Mins (0.48 per 36)
                      75/50 Cam Thomas (SG): 3 Dunks in 679 Mins (0.15 per 36)
                      60/40 David Duke (SG): 1 Dunk in 141 Mins (0.25 per 36)
                      55/35 Spencer Dinwiddie (PG): 12 Dunks in 1946 Mins (0.22 per 36)
                      45/40 Dru Smith (PG): 0 Dunks in 97 Mins (0.0 per 36)
                      36/25 Seth Curry (SG): 0 Dunks in 914 Mins (0.0 per 36)
                      25/25 Patty Mills (PG): 0 Dunks in 479 Mins (0.0 per 36)

Average PG Dunk is 60/30. Average SG Dunk is 75/40. So the average Driving Dunk rating is 75 for all positions except PG (where non-dunking players drag it down). But then note the 10-point increments for each position in Standing. By golly it's almost as if we taught ourselves 2K's own scales via reverse engineering in a single post.

Cam Thomas has no business having a 75 Dunk. He had ZERO dunks in 1176 mins last season, so even this scant number is better than what he did last year.

Dinwiddie is much improved this season in his second season off an ACL tear. He's essentially quadrupled his Dunk rate from last year (3 Dunks, 1980 mins). His Dunk rating is actually +10 on the year - they KNOW about his dunk rate.... so then what are we doing w/ Cam Thomas kiddos?

                      I have:
                      75/45 Sumner
                      60/40 Duke
                      55/35 Thomas
                      55/35 Dinwiddie
                      45/35 Smith
                      30/25 Curry
                      25/25 Mills

                      But what do I know!

It's 12:39am. Subtract about an hour of forum formatting and grandstanding. 2K could knock all these out in an afternoon, if they were capable of efficiently parsing and processing data. They're not. Keep an eye out for Dunk updates in 2027. Try to stomach Ben Simmons another 36 months or so.

Still no Harold Minor available in his draft class.

What’s the point of saying you’re adding a new player in an update when that player isn’t even accessi… nevermind. I give up trying to understand 2K.

yeah, I mean overall is meaningless in some ways, but it's also not. I think it's cool. Nice to see Grayson Allen get nerfed! I'm very interested in 2ks numbers because sometimes they come together and make someone who plays like a real basketball player and sometimes they don't haha.

Def has nothing to do with overall, tho. It kinda sucks they tie overall to rotation because I sure don't. In my mylgs I'm taking a stray pg, a big body... as my last two spots and putting overlapping wings on the reserve list. I do my rotations based on who is on the floor/what they can contribute. If only we could get better trade logic related to overall/position, too... ble.

Still, yeah, ratings update breakdowns <3

Was going to do a video analysis but skipping it to focus on my roster and spreadsheet.

                            Here's my Notes outline.

                            Big Movers
                            79 (+4) Cam Thomas
                            77 (+3) Mark Williams
                            76 (+3) Malaki Branham

                            Badge Edits
                            22 De'Aaron Fox (+1)
                            17 Mikal Bridges (+3)
                            6 Cam Thomas (+5)

                            —--------------------------------------

                            Mark Williams
                            77 OVR (+3)

Was in G-League to start the season.
Took over as starter after Mason Plumlee trade
                            Key Advanced Stats
                            66 TS% on 17 USG% (73% At Rim. Only 50% on Layups, doesn’t have great touch yet)
                            11 ORB% and 27 DRB%
                            2.2 STL% / 6.5 BLK%
                            Only 2 AST%

                            4 starts: 11 PPG, 8 RPG, 28 MPG

                            —------------------------------------------------

                            Malaki Branham
                            76 OVR (+3)

Has been on fire in February.
                            8 February games (7 starts): 18 PPG, 4 RPG, 3 APG.
                            61 TS% on 20 USG%.
                            52 FG, 41 3PT%
Of course, Pretty dismal prior to that. 41 FG%, 28 3PT% through the first 37 games.

Has been starting at PG w/ Tre Jones sidelined. Not much of a playmaker though. Path is clear at SG w/ Vassell & Langford also hurt, plus team traded Josh Richardson.

Good mid-range scorer, esp for a rookie
                            53% from 3-9, 32 AST%
                            52% from 10-15, 33 AST%
                            44% from 16-23, 53 AST%

32% from three, only 94 AST%, so isn’t nearly as good outside the arc. He’s like a lower end Cam Thomas.
                            69% at the Rim, 49 AST%
66% on Layups, only 2 dunks, def a below the rim guy. Percentages are great but the volume is low.

                            Cam Thomas
                            79 OVR (+4)

Had 3 game stretch where he averaged 44.7 PPG, on 56-56-90.
20 points on 3-16 FG in the following game, his 3rd as a starter.
Then the KD trade happened, returning him a 20 MPG bench role.
He seems frustrated by that but at the end of the day isn’t much more than a volume scorer.
On season, 11 PPG in only 17 MPG

                            68% Rim, 33 AST%
                            47% 3-9, 33 AST%
                            35% 10-15, 33 AST%
                            50% 16-23, 29 AST%
                            41% 3PT, 4.7 att36 is low volume but only 42 AST%

                            Phenomenal scorer off the dribble.
                            Limited playmaker, negative defender.

41 3PT% this year, only 27% last season.
More than doubled FT rate, 7.2 FTA/36, from 3.2 last season.

Why is Anthony Edwards steals only 63? Pass perception responsibility only 70. Defensive consistency only 70. That can't be right?
