The purpose of this thread is to share my experience playing a franchise mode in Madden NFL 2002 on the original Xbox, using CPU vs CPU games with custom All-Pro difficulty sliders inspired by the original Madden Manifesto. I've chosen 11 minute quarters, before the era of the accelerated clock feature, which results in the NFL average of about 120 combined offensive plays between both teams, providing a true-to-life simulation experience.
I encourage you to watch the videos on 2x speed if the length of the games is intimidating, as this will speed up the gameplay without sacrificing the overall experience.
While the original game only supported 480p, I'm using a feature on the original Xbox that allows me to force an upscale to 720p for the best quality without using an emulator. This way, you can enjoy the games in the best possible resolution.
It's worth noting that Madden NFL 2002 doesn't yet offer pre-season or other in-depth franchise features that we're accustomed to for 6th generation Madden titles. However, this won't stop us from enjoying the game and experiencing a realistic simulation of the 2001 NFL season!
With this being the 2001 season, it's also worth noting that it's before the 2002 divisional realignment. The realignment is a feature in the game for year two, as well as the option to take control of the expansion Houston Texans. We'll be playing through the 2001 season as it was originally played, with the classic divisions and teams.
The season will start in Week 1, where we'll be hosting the divisional rival Atlanta Falcons, led by rookie #1 overall pick Michael Vick. This should make for an exciting matchup right from the get-go!
I'm looking forward to sharing this retro sports gaming experience with you all, and I encourage you to provide feedback and suggestions as we make our way through the 2001 NFL season!
So sit back, relax, and enjoy as we bring the classics back to life in this retro sports gaming experience!
