Tartans Handily Swept at Texas A&M to Open Campaign
Carnegie Mellon managed to lead briefly in the second game, but ultimately was outscored over the series, 38-8

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- In its NCAA Division I baseball debut, Carnegie Mellon was swept by a strong Texas A&M side over three games (13-1, 10-7, 15-0).

Texas A&M (3-0) banged out 50 hits in the three contests and trailed or was tied for a total of five innings. Carnegie Mellon (0-3) managed to collect an impressive 35 hits over the weekend and briefly led in the second game with six runs over the second and third innings, but it failed to make national statement with a win in the program’s first series.

“There were some positive steps we took this weekend,” said Tartans head coach Steven Van Buren. “Obviously we would have loved to get a win – especially in that second game – but we were able to get some runners on the basepaths and our pitching had some clean innings here and there. It’s hard to go in College Station for your first series as a program and come away with any kind of result.”

In Game 1, the Aggies scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Ramon Tillman was ejected in the fourth inning after hitting his second batter, putting Brett Gaston into the contest – who promptly served up a homerun to Chris Rodgers. Hector Karl then was thrown out in the sixth when he hit a batter, as CMU hit four in total. Aaron Musgrove’s RBI single in the top of the sixth scored Wade Froemming, giving the Tartans their first run in program history.

Game 2 saw CMU take a 6-3 lead through three innings thanks to RBI singles by Musgrove, Kit Kreuter, and the first homerun in school history by Darrell Salters. Despite netting 18 hits, the Tartans would fall because of their pitching troubles. Matt Uribes gave up six runs and didn’t make it out of the fourth inning, and Karl gave up the deciding run in relief.

Texas A&M rolled in Game 3, scoring 14 of its 15 runs in the first five innings. Bryan Paronto was tagged for eight runs in 1 2/3 frames in his first collegiate start. Kreuter and Salters both hit a double in the defeat.

Carnegie Mellon is at home this weekend to host Santa Clara in the inaugural series at Hans Lobert Field.

        Froemming's Walk-Off Single Completes Comeback
After losing 2-0 in the first game of the series, the Tartans scored two runs in the ninth to grab their first win

by Brittany Adams, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The inaugural baseball season of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans likely won’t produce many wins, but the ones that they do get will certainly be sweet. And they’re even sweeter when they happen in walk-off fashion.

Trailing 4-0 in the second game of a two-game series at Hans Lobert Field, Carnegie Mellon (1-4) scored a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and then two more in the bottom of the ninth capped by a walk-off single by Wade Freomming, to lift the Tartans to a series split against Santa Clara (0-2, 5-4). Less than 365 days after starting a baseball program at the university, the Tartans have their first Division I victory.

“All the credit goes to the guys,” said CMU head coach Steven Van Buren after the second game. “They really dug in and never said to themselves that they were supposed to lose this game. We felt like we could have won the first one and were a little disappointed by that, and despite going down in game two, we felt like we were due to break through. This is a really strong clubhouse and they all love playing for each other, and I think that alone will allow us to win some surprise games here and there this year.”

Matt Uribes gave up four runs in a short outing on the hill, though two of them were earned. After getting one back in the bottom of the sixth, Kit Kreuter blasted a two-run homer in the seventh to pull CMU within one at 4-3. The hosts then loaded the bases in the eighth after singles by Ryan Rayner, Robby Freed, and Joaquin Cormier, but Danny Ray Boss grounded out to third to end the threat.

Kreuter got the ball rolling again in the Tartans’ last at-bats, slapping a one-out single to center. Darrell Salters then ripped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third, and Tyler Tully was intentionally walked to load the bases. Rayner worked a 3-2 count before lofting a fly ball deep enough to score Kreuter, then Wade Froemming came back from 0-2 to ground a seeing-eye single through the middle to send the Tartans home winners.

Santa Clara (3-1) needed just a two-run homer from Scott Perry in the first inning to win the opening game. Ramon Tillman pitched three innings before dislocating his finger on a line drive, and Paxton Jennings came in to give CMU nearly five innings of shutout relief. Despite getting multi-hit days from Kreuter and Rayner, the hosts weren’t able to get a run to cross the plate.

Carnegie Mellon hits the road next weekend when it heads to #18 Oklahoma.

Tillman to miss up to two weeks
Junior right-hander Ramon Tillman will miss at least one scheduled start after dislocating his finger in Carnegie Mellon’s 2-0 loss to Santa Clara last week.

Tillman, one of the four players to transfer in from Kenyon College, has a 7.11 ERA and eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched this season. Senior right-hander Hector Karl (0-1, 4.2 IP, 5.79 ERA, 5 K, 1 BB) will get Tillman’s next start.

          Freed to serve academic suspension
Freshman infielder Robby Freed has been suspended five games for an academic violation and will miss the upcoming series against #18 Oklahoma and Cincinnati, as well as the first game of the Middle Tennessee set.

Freed has a .375/.412/.375 slash line with six hits and three runs scored this season. Fellow first-year infielder Chris Grieve (0-3, BB) will take his spot in the lineup at second base.

Tartans looking at infield help in recruiting
CMU head coach Steven Van Buren is beginning to work on his first full recruiting class and has focused on a pair of infielders in the early going.

The biggest target has to be Ohio shortstop Aramis Baker. Baker specializes at shortstop at Rock Hill High School but has seen time at every other position. He is a solid runner with good defense, and his bat is improving. Baker would be an immediate starter somewhere in the infield in 2008.

Canadian product Rod Strange is another prospect that Van Buren has scouted. The Montreal, Quebec native is a third baseman, but can also give a team innings behind the plate. He’s another player where his defense is ahead of his offense, though his bat is not nearly as advanced as Baker’s. Strange is also a good thrower with a strong arm at the hot corner.

          Carnegie Mellon Recruiting Targets
          Aramis Baker, SS/UT (6’2”, 192 lbs.; R/R; Ironton, Ohio / Rock Hill)
Rod Strange, 3B/C (5’9”, 187 lbs.; R/R; Montreal, Quebec / Édouard Montpetit College)

#18 Sooners Sweep Handily Sweep Tartans in Norman
Carnegie Mellon led 2-0 briefly after the first inning of the first game, but scored one run over the next 17 frames

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

NORMAN, Okla. -- Coming off the first win in program history, Carnegie Mellon was predictably swept its first series against a nationally-ranked team, falling 7-2 and 9-1 against No. 18 Oklahoma this past weekend.

Carnegie Mellon (1-6) exceeded expectations in the two-game set, however, briefly leading in the opening game after a Ryan Rayner RBI double and Wade Froemming groundout scoring him. Oklahoma (7-2) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, then scored four in the fourth, and flipped a 1-1 deadlock in game two with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

“It was obviously going to be tough to come out here and come away with a win considering where both programs are,” said Tartans head coach Steven Van Buren. “But I’m proud of our guys for how they competed throughout the weekend. Oklahoma’s lineup is loaded from top to bottom and their pitching staff is nasty, yet we jumped out to an early lead on Friday and then Hector (Karl) threw a gem Saturday before they got going. There’s been definite growth already just a few weekends in.”

Following the two-run first, Spencer Roenicke settled down for the Sooners in the first game, striking out 11 over six frames. Rayner and Kit Kreuter each posted two-hit performances, while freshman Chris Grieve tallied three hits – including a double – in his first start replacing the suspended Robby Freed.

Hector Karl did his best to keep CMU in the second, leaving with one out in the sixth inning in the middle of a 1-1 game. Peter Dirks came in and promptly served up a grand slam to Josh Chiarelli, one of four homeruns the Tartans staff allowed in the second game. Tyler Tully’s RBI single in the top of the sixth provided the only run for the visitors.

Carnegie Mellon returns home next weekend to host Cincinnati.

Started playing this again after a couple year hiatus, and with the college football version of the Tartans back in full swing, I wanted to bring this back as well and hopefully get them on the same timeline.

Walk-Off Homer Highlights Surprising Split for Tartans
Carnegie Mellon junior shortstop Darrell Salters hit a walk-off solo homer in the 10th inning of Game 1 against Cincinnati

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Behind a walk-off solo homer in the 10th inning of Game 1, Carnegie Mellon earned an impressive series split with Cincinnati this past weekend at Hans Lobert Field. The Tartans won the opener, 3-2, before falling to the Bears in Game 2, 2-0.

Carnegie Mellon (2-7) rode a strong performance by junior right-hander Ramon Tillman in the first game, as he spun five innings of one-run ball to keep the Tartans within striking distances. Freshman infielder Chris Grieve gave the hosts the lead in the sixth inning with a two-out, two-run double that scored Tyler Tully and Will Froemming, but Andy Morneau's two-out single in the top of the eighth brought Cincinnati (6-3) even and eventually forced extra inning.

Sitting on a 1-for-4 day as he led off the bottom of the 10th inning, junior shortstop Darrell Salters connected on Bobby Quon's first pitch of the frame, lifting it over the right-field wall to send his teammates into a frenzy. Salters had the opportunity to play hero after freshman right-hander Paxton Jennings stranded runners on the corners when he entered in the top half with two outs.

"We're continually improving and getting better," said CMU head coach Steven Van Buren. "Cincinnati has a solid team and we were competitive in both games. Our resolve in the first game was a mark of this team's character, and while we were blanked by an excellent pitcher in the second game, our pitching gave us the chance to be in the game with their efforts."

In Game 2, Bearcats senior Jim Fleury registered a complete game shutout, scattering just four hits and a walk against five strikeouts. Cincinnati scored both of its runs in the top of the first, with Tommy Harrington and Dane Paiml bringing in runs via sacrifice flies.

Senior centerfielder Kit Kreuter hit his second double of the season and stole a base in the defeat, while Greieve went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

Carnegie Mellon heads to the Volunteer State next weekend to play two games against Middle Tennessee State.

Tartans Bashed by Blue Raiders’ Bats
Middle Tennessee State scored 22 runs on Carnegie Mellon in a two-game sweep

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

MURFEESBORO, Tenn. -- Carnegie Mellon had no answer for the offense of Middle Tennessee, allowing 22 runs over a two-game sweep on the road earlier this week. The Blue Raiders won Game 1, 12-7, and then were 10-4 victors in Game 2.

Carnegie Mellon (2-9) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Game 1, thanks in part to freshman infielder Chris Grieve’s first career homerun – a two-run shot – and a two-run double by senior first baseman Will Froemming over the opening two innings. However, sophomore pitcher Bryan Paronto gave back all five runs in the bottom of the third inning, and then the bullpen allowed seven runs over innings five through seven.

In Game 2, Middle Tennessee (10-5) opened up a 3-1 lead through two innings, and tacked on four in the fourth and three in the seventh. Only a three-run top of the ninth with run-scoring hits by junior designated hitter Tyler Tully and senior outfielder Ryan Rayner saved the Tartans from a larger defeat.

“We just didn’t have it from a pitching standpoint,” said CMU head coach Steven Van Buren. “Middle Tennessee State has a talented and deep lineup, and they crush every mistake. It’s hard to avoid these types of series when we’re just starting as a program, but we’ll learn and get better because of it.”

The Blue Raiders hit six homeruns over the two contests, with Chris Bowser and Zac Beverlin going yard on both days. Beverlin finished the series by going 4-of-6 with two homers, four RBI, three walks, and three runs scored. The sophomore first baseman is on the radar of MLB teams heading into the 2008 MLB Draft, and is already up to seven homeruns this season.

Carnegie Mellon continues non-conference play at Auburn this weekend.

Grieve to remain in starting lineup at third base
Thanks to his performance in February, freshman Chris Grieve is set to remain in the starting lineup with the return of classmate Robby Freed from his academic suspension.

Grieve is currently slashing .440/.462/.680 with 11 hits, one of which being a homerun. CMU head coach Steven Van Buren says that Grieve is likely to move to third base, with Freed (.375/.412/.375, 3 R, 6 H) returning to second base.

Senior infielder Aaron Musgrove will move to the bench after opening the season with a .205/.225/.231 slash line and eight hits.

Van Buren searching for rotation solutions
Carnegie Mellon head coach Steven Van Buren says that there could be some rotation within the starting rotation as the Tartans seek for consistency from their pitching staff.

The trio of junior Ramon Tillman (15.0 IP, 0-3, 7.80 ERA, 10 K, 5 BB), sophomore Matt Uribes (9.0 IP, 0-1, 10.0 IP, 9 K, 8 BB), and second-year Bryan Paronto (9.1 IP, 0-2, 18.32 ERA, 2 K, 8 BB) has been lit up over the first month. Van Buren says that they see some encouraging signs from Tillman and he will keep his spot, while Uribes and Paronto’s roles are up in the air.

Possible candidates to start in Uribe and Paronto’s place include senior Hector Karl (13.2 IP, 0-2, 5.27 ERA, 13 K, 1 BB) and sophomore Scott Dittfurth (2.1 IP, 0-0, 3.86 ERA, 1 K, 2 BB).

Hnytka, Linton interested in Carnegie Mellon
CMU’s recruiting board continues to grow with mutual interest shown between the coaching staff and a pair of high school prospects from the Northeast.

Travis Hnytka, a six-foot-five, 204-pound right-handed pitcher from Albany, N.Y., would likely slot into the Tartans rotation immediately. He possesses four pitches in a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, curveball, and knucklecurve, with all grading around average except for his four-seamer. Hnytka also plays second base for Albany High School and has the ability to play there in college.

Scott Linton, a six-foot, 213-pound left fielder from Islesboro, Maine, has a big arm capable of throwing out potential runners, but average grades everywhere else. Linton bats and throws righty, and also plays first base for Islesboro High School.

Hnytka and Linton join shortstop Aramis Baker (Ironton, Ohio) and third baseman Rod Strange (Montreal, Quebec) among CMU head coach Steven Van Buren’s recruiting targets for the Class of 2007.

                        Carnegie Mellon Recruiting Targets
                        Aramis Baker, SS/UT (6’2”, 192 lbs.; R/R; Ironton, Ohio / Rock Hill)
Rod Strange, 3B/C (5’9”, 187 lbs.; R/R; Montreal, Quebec / Édouard Montpetit College)
                        Travis Hnytka, SP/2B (6’5”, 204 lbs.; R/R; Albany, N.Y. / Albany)
                        Scott Linton, LF/1B (6’0”, 213 lbs.; R/R; Islesboro, Maine / Islesboro)

Tartans Blanked in Two-Game Sweep at Auburn
Carnegie Mellon collected 15 hits over the two games, but couldn’t push across any runs in a pair of losses

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

AUBURN, Ala. -- Despite collecting 15 hits in two games, Carnegie Mellon couldn’t push across a run as it was shut out in a two-game sweep at Auburn this past weekend. The Tigers topped the Tartans, 5-0, in the first game, and 3-0, in the second.

In Game 1, Carnegie Mellon (2-11) allowed all five Auburn (7-4) runs in the bottom of the third. Matt Freese opened the scoring with a RBI double, then Doug Pruemer bashed a two-run single to make it 3-0. Jon Byers made it 4-0 with a fielder’s choice, and Joe Borchard brought in Byers with a sacrifice fly.

Matt Uribes allowed all five runs, lasting 2.1 innings with five hits and three walks allowed. Senior first baseman Will Froemming collected two hits for the Tartans, but the offense struck out 10 times against Kevin Carroll (5.2 IP, 3 H, 7 K) and Mendy Uttuslien (3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 K).

Froemming doubled twice in Game 2, but two runs in the bottom of the second and an insurance run in the sixth gave Auburn a 3-0 victory.

CMU had its opportunities, with Tyler Tully adding a double as part of a 3-for-4 day, but the Tigers pitching staff scattered the visitors’ eight hits with four strikeouts.

Michael Haygood didn’t pitch long enough to be eligible for the win, but he went 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and allowed seven hits and two walks. The bullpen took control from there, with Tyler Larmour pitching 2.2 no-hit innings and Ryan Osborn firing a perfect ninth.

For the Tartans, Bryan Paronto allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in 3.2 innings.

Carnegie Mellon completes its three-series road trip with a West Coast series at UCLA next weekend.

Tillman suspended four games for academics
Carnegie Mellon’s rotation will be thinner over the next couple of series, as junior right-hander Ramon Tillman (15.0 IP, 0-3, 7.80 ERA, 10 K, 5 BB) faces a four-game academic suspension.

Tillman was set to start the opener at UCLA on Friday, but instead will return to the mount on Friday, March 16 against Western Kentucky. He will miss the Tartans’ inaugural Atlantic-10 series at home against Temple on March 13-14.

Senior right-hander Hector Karl (13.2 IP, 0-2, 5.27 ERA, 13 K, 1 BB) moves into the rotation to replace him, and is slated to start in both the UCLA and Temple series.

Van Buren to give Gaston a start at UCLA
There was more shuffling in the CMU starting rotation this week, as junior right-hander Brett Gaston (10.2 IP, 0-0, 5.06 ERA, 8 K, 6 BB) will receive his first career start this Saturday at UCLA.

Gaston has been one of the more consistent arms from the bullpen thus far, and is replacing sophomore right-hander Matt Uribes (11.1 IP, 0-2, 11.91 ERA, 10 K, 11 BB) in the rotation. Tartans head coach Steven Van Buren noted that this switch is temporary as of now, with both Gaston and Uribes having the opportunity to earn the spot outright with their performances.

CMU at bottom of Atlantic 10 with league play on horizon
As projected, Carnegie Mellon sits at the bottom of the Atlantic-10 standings with conference play set to begin next week.

In their first year as a program, the Tartans are 2-11 overall with victories over Santa Clara and Cincinnati. CMU shares the bottom spot with Richmond, with no one playing a league contest as of yet.

St. Bonaventure has exploded out of the gates, owning a 12-1 record and the No. 4 ranking nationally. Saint Joseph’s is 6-5 and Saint Louis sits at 6-6, while city rival Duquesne owns a 4-8 record.

                            California right-hander targeted by Tartans
CMU added another prospect to the recruiting board this week, as right-handed pitcher Matt Seibel (Lancaster, Calif.) received a scholarship offer from the staff.

Seibel, a six-foot-four, 221-pound pitcher and first baseman from Paraclete High School, uses four pitches in a four-seam fastball, two-season fastball, change-up, and splitter. Scouts grade his splitter and two-seamer as his best pitches, with the four-seam and change-up both needing work.

Carnegie Mellon lost a narrow 4-3 decision in Game 1 before taking a 12-1 loss to close the series

by Hayden Issacs, Carnegie Mellon sports reporter

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It was a tale of two contests in Carnegie Mellon’s non-conference series at UCLA, but ultimately both results were the same as the Tartans were swept in a two-game series this weekend. CMU dropped the opening game, 4-3, after coming back from a 3-0 deficit, and fell 12-1 the following day.

In Game 1, Carnegie Mellon (2-13) fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning after a Josh Preciado two-run single and Seth Torrealba RBI single. The Tartans came back in the top of the fifth with a pair of doubles – a two-run hit from junior designated hitter Tyler Tully and a RBI two-bagger from freshman second baseman Chris Grieve – but UCLA (12-8) responded with a solo homerun from Jordan Florie in the bottom half that ultimately decided the game.

Senior right-hander Hector Karl received the start for the Tartans with Ramon Tillman’s academic suspension, and was saddled with the loss after allowing eight hits and four runs in 4.1 innings. Karl did have some success against the Bruins lineup, striking out seven and only walking one.

The Bruins’ senior ace Ryan Alec was dominant in the second game, striking out 11 over 6.2 innings while allowing a single run. Meanwhile, for CMU, junior right-hander Brett Gaston couldn’t make it out of the third inning, as he was dinged up for nine hits and six runs.

Down 7-0 in the top of the sixth inning, the Tartans pulled a run back with a solo homerun from junior shortstop Darrell Salters. The homer was his third of the season, but UCLA responded in the bottom half with two runs to make it 9-1, then tacked on three runs in the eighth inning to set the final.

A bright spot in Game 2 for the Tartans was junior southpaw Elpidio MacLean, who kept his earned run average at 0.00 after netting two outs following the Bruins’ three-run eighth.

Carnegie Mellon opens Atlantic-10 Conference play on Tuesday with two games against Temple.

CMU Wins A-10 Opener, Splits Series with Cross-State Foe Temple
The Tartans’ five-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in a 7-1 win in Game 1, which snapped a seven-game losing streak

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- A 1-0 deficit entering the bottom of the fifth inning isn’t supposed to be insurmountable, but no one would blame Carnegie Mellon if it felt that way in its Atlantic-10 opener against Temple.

This is a team that is believed to be in its first season as a program, with a roster that is essentially its club team from last year with the addition of four transfers from NCAA Division III’s Kenyon College. And despite some promising results in February with wins over Santa Clara and Cincinnati, the Tartans entered the series on a seven-game losing streak, being outscored 48-15 over that timeframe.

But the past is the past. And for one day, Carnegie Mellon stood on top of the A-10 standings by overcoming that fifth-inning deficit with five runs, ultimately defeating Temple, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

“We were telling the guys that when we entered (Atlantic-10) play, everyone is tied for first,” said CMU head coach Steven Van Buren. “We know that results haven’t been where we want them to be, and we understand that to be successful, it’s going to take time. This is something basically unprecedented that we’re doing and patience is needed, so when we get results like this, it makes it that much sweeter. All credit goes out to the guys for competing in all areas, and not getting down on ourselves when we faced that 1-0 hole.”

Carnegie Mellon (3-14, 1-1 A-10) used a double and three singles to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman rightfielder Danny Ray Boss tied it with a RBI double to right, then senior catcher Joaquin Cormier pushed the go-ahead run across with a RBI single. Senior centerfielder Kit Kreuter followed that up with his own RBI single to make it 3-1, and classmate Will Froemming tacked two more runs on with his own single that chased Temple (7-9, 1-1 A-10) starting pitcher Ryan Everitt.

CMU added two more RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. Ross did the honors once again in the seventh – bringing in Kreuter – while Tyler Tully gave the hosts their seventh run with a two-out knock in the eighth.

Sophomore right-hander Bryan Paronto picked up the win for the Tartans, striking out six in five innings with four hits, two walks, and a run allowed.

“I’ve been challenging Bryan (Paronto) as of late and he definitely responded today,” said Van Buren. “He mixed his pitches well and didn’t get discouraged after giving up a run in the second. These are the performances we need from our staff, and I knew that Bryan had it in him.”

Game 2 on Thursday went the Owls’ way, as the visitors broke a 2-2 deadlock in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of a two-run double by Matt Matuszek.

Boss struck again in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double to give CMU a 2-1 lead, but Kane Cruz responded with a RBI triple in the top of the fifth to make it 2-2. After senior right-hander Hector Karl departed following six strong innings, junior southpaw Elpidio MacLean allowed his first runs of the season on the Matuszek double and was saddled with the loss.

Freshman second baseman Chris Grieve had a chance to play hero in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded, but Austin Maddox struck him out swinging.

Carnegie Mellon continues a stretch of five consecutive home series this weekend, as it returns to non-conference play to host Western Kentucky on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17.
