    Re: NBA 2K23 Roster Update - 3.23.23 - 9th Ratings Update

    BADGE UPDATES (1)
    1 (+1) Walker Kessler

    Walker Kessler
    BRONZE: Anchor (ADD)

This is the epitome of laziness and indicates a lacking player knowledge. Kessler is 2nd in the NBA in Block Rate, 4th in Offensive Rebound Rate, boasts a 70 TS%, and has established himself as the #2 Rookie after Banchero. For a BRONZE Anchor badge to be the single change is a joke.

Maybe this change would have been justified months ago (in November, when he was coming off the bench), but today, March 23rd, it's a slap in the face to both Kessler and the consumer. An 83 OVR player having a single Bronze badge frankly means whoever is doing the badges doesn't know the system very well.

    BIG MOVERS (3)
    - James Wiseman - 80 OVR (+3)
    - Jabari Smith Jr - 79 OVR (+3)
    - Jaden Hardy - 76 OVR (+3)

    James Wiseman
    Last 2 Weeks (7 GP, 27 MPG): 15 PPG, 10 RPG, 52 FG%
    2023 Prior (29 GP, 16 MPG): 8 PPG, 5 RPG, 61 FG%

Wiseman is at least putting up the numbers expected of a #2 pick. His defense is still bad but he needs the reps.

    Jabari Smith Jr
    Last 2 Weeks (8 GP, 37 MPG): 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 2 APG, 49 FG%, 42 3PT%
    2023 Prior: (62 GP, 30 MPG): 12 PPG, 7 RPG, 1 APG, 39 FG%, 30 3PT%

Smith is finally showing the promise that had him in consideration for the #1 pick.
He hasn't been building up to this, as he was atrocious in January (17 3pt%) and February (25%). It's anyone's guess how long this heat wave will last.

    Jaden Hardy
    Last 2 weeks (6 GP, 27 MPG): 20 PPG, 4 RPG, 3 APG, 43 FG%, 46 3PT%)
    2023 Prior: (33 GP, 11 MPG): 7 PPG, 1 RPG, 1 APG, 44 FG%, 36 3PT%)

Don't read too much into this. Luka missed the last 5 games. Three of these games came against the Grizzlies without Ja Morant and the Mavs went 0-3.
    In Hardy's 3 starts he averaged 24 PPG (39 MPG), on 21 FGA (36 FG%)

    MEDIUM MOVERS (14)
    - Jimmy Butler - 93 OVR (+2) - Actually a +2 rather than +1
    - Walker Kessler - 83 OVR (+2)
    - Ivica Zubac - 81 OVR (+2)
    - Mitchell Robinson - 80 OVR (-2)
    - Zach Collins - 79 OVR (+2)
    - Jae Crowder - 78 OVR (+2)
    - Talen Horton Tucker - 78 OVR (+2)
    - Ochai Agbaji - 77 OVR (+2)
    - Andrew Nembhard - 77 OVR (+2) - Actually a +2 rather than +1
    - Nassir Little - 75 OVR (-2)
    - Rodney McGruder - 73 OVR (+2)
    - Miles McBride - 73 OVR (+2)
    - Sandro Mamukelashvili - 73 OVR (+2)
    - John Konchar - 72 OVR (-2)

The NBA season ends in about 17 days so most of the movement will be younger / developmental players.

    ERRONEOUS RATINGS (4)
Jimmy Butler (+2 rather than +1)
Andrew Nembhard (+2 rather than +1)
Kevin Love (No change, has been 76 since 2/17)
Keldon Johnson (No change, has been 83 since 12/1)

    OTHER ROSTER NOTES
This is the first time in the last decade that a team (OKC Thunder) had zero players w/ OVR changes in a roster update. OKC played 6 games and went 5-1.

This is the lightest update of the year. Only 81 OVR Changes (2.7 per team)

I'm surprised Cole Anthony didn't get any love. He's been the best player off the bench this month.

          Re: NBA 2K23 Roster Update - 3.23.23 - 9th Ratings Update

This is the first time in the last decade that a team (OKC Thunder) had zero players w/ OVR changes in a roster update. OKC played 6 games and went 5-1.
Notable OKC Performances over the last two weeks:

          March 11th
          SGA: 35 points (11-23 FG, 13-13 FT)
          Giddey: 19-7-4 (8-12 FG)
Jalen Williams: 17 points (7-10 FG)

          March 12th (SGA DNP)
          Jalen Williams: 21-7-10
          Josh Giddey: 15-5-11
Ousmane Dieng: 17 points, 8 rebounds (both career highs)

          March 14th
          SGA: 35-7-4 (12-24 FG, 10-12 FT)
          Dort: 24 pts, 9 rebs (9-16 FG, 6-11 3PT)
          Jalen: 23-8-10
          Giddey: 15-13-10

          March 16th
          SGA: 29 pts (12-19 FG)

          March 19th (beat the Suns)
          SGA: 40 pts (12-24 FG, 16-19 FT)
          Dort: 20 pts (7-11 FG, 4-6 3PT)
          Giddey: 16-6-6
Isaiah Joe: 15 pts (6-10 FG)

March 21st (beat the Clippers to hit .500 for first time this season)
          SGA: 31 pts (12-25 FG, 6-7 FT)
          Jalen: 20 pts, 8 rebs

          OKC last 2 weeks:
          SGA (5 GS, 36 MPG): 34 PPG, 6 RPG, 3 APG (51-50-88)
          Jalen (6 GS, 34 MPG): 17 PPG, 8 RPG, 4 APG (50-33-90)
          Giddey (6 GS, 32 MPG): 15 PPG, 8 RPG, 5 APG (47-39-67)
          Dort (6 GS, 34 MPG): 14 PPG, 5 RPG, 3 APG (39-34-93)
          Joe (6 GP, 1 GS, 27 MPG): 10 PPG, 4 RPG, 1 APG (40-34-100)

They likely should have pushed SGA to 95 (which is where I have him), but that would require a more hands-on approach to accomplish.

            Re: NBA 2K23 Roster Update - 3.23.23 - 9th Ratings Update

I was watching Lakers vs Bulls yesterday and I could not avoid to think how frigging bad L.A. defense was but still Anthony Davis and Lebron James are 2 of the best defenders in NBA2k... which they are far from it in real basketball nowadays...

Physical attributes, defense and durability are way misshandled (at least in Lebron's case) by the guys in charge of the ratings and that is one of the reasons keeping Lebron pretty overrated currently... but hey... All time points record and so, no complaints.... why being realistic when hype sell more.
            Ignorance is Bliss...

The Lakers are 12th defensively. One game does not a defense make.

Davis remains a top 5 defensive center. Games played are his issue, not on-court effectiveness. He has lost a step, but it's only impacted his ability to play the 4, not the 5.

It's the case leaguewide; it is not specific to a team or player. Favoritism isn't the issue.

2K doesn't account for player aging.

              Dwight Howard's athletic ratings went largely unchanged from Age 26 (All-NBA 1st, All-Defense 1st) to Age 36 (low-usage backup).

Anthony Davis (79 Speed, 86 Vertical) has the same athletic ratings at Age 29 as when he entered the league at Age 19.

I track year-to-year changes for Speed, On-Ball Defense etc in my spreadsheet. There are MAYBE 20 players who had a Speed rating change from September 2021 and September 2022 (an entire 2K cycle). Most of those changes were "whoops Tyrese Haliburton and Franz Wagner were way better than we initially thought" rather than anything tangibly related to athletic performance.

                2K23 Speed Ratings
                97 De'Aaron Fox (Age 25)
                97 Keon Johnson (Age 21)
96 Russell Westbrook (Age 34)!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Compare to Ja
                96 Donovan Mitchell (Age 26)
                95 Ja Morant (Age 23)
92 Ben Simmons (Age 26) - Back injuries sapped athleticism, plays Center now
                92 Jaden Ivey (Age 21)
                92 Kira Lewis (Age 21)
                91 Lonnie Walker (Age 24)
                90 Giannis Antetekounmpo (Age 28)
                90 Derrick White (Age 28)
                90 Josh Okogie (Age 24)
                90 R.J. Hampton (Age 22)
                90 Daishen Nix (Age 21)
89 Donte DiVincenzo (Age 26) - Multiple injuries since being drafted
                89 Anthony Edwards (Age 21)
                89 Tyrese Maxey (Age 22) - This is actually +12 from 2K22
                89 Shaedon Sharpe (Age 19)
                88 Damian Lillard (Age 32)
                88 Collin Sexton (Age 24)
                88 Darius Garland (Age 23)
                88 Ochai Agbaji (Age 22)
                88 Jalen Green (Age 22)
                88 Jalen Suggs (Age 21)
                88 Jalen Williams (Age 21)
                87 LeBron James (Age 38)
                87 Ish Smith (Age 34)
87 James Harden (Age 33) - Compare to Maxey
                87 Bones Hyland (Age 22)
                87 James Bouknight (Age 22)
                87 Ziaire Williams (Age 21)
                87 Max Christie (Age 20)

Maxey had 77 Speed his first two seasons. All it would have taken is 20 seconds of tape to see how stupid that was, and it took over a year for Mike to (halfway) address it.

Mike bases these off Draft Combine data and then looks like a fool when players perform differently in a game setting.

There are grave issues w/ whatever their process is. Their goal is to watch as little basketball as possible to accomplish the task at hand. I understand the importance of this from a practicality standpoint but it's disgraceful that players are going their entire careers w/ minimal adjustment.

Physical attributes, defense and durability are way misshandled (at least in Lebron's case) by the guys in charge of the ratings and that is one of the reasons keeping Lebron pretty overrated currently... but hey... All time points record and so, no complaints.... why being realistic when hype sell more.
Exactly. Worst part is Lebron’s defense is SO bad these last two years that the lakers looked like a vastly worse team with him last night than without him. They were looking much more formidable, youthful and energetic without him taking plays off on the defensive end of the floor.

But hey, highest rated player on 2K. No special treatment there. Tatum gets bumped down to 94 but I’m sure LBJ could average around 19ppg for the rest of the season playing defense that should be badge-less and rated in the 50’s, and won’t get docked from his 97. Or maybe go back to a 96 which was already hilariously overblown.

Also that list above freaked me out thinking I totally missed Giannis turning 30. Had to look it up and indeed he’s actually only 28.

LeBron literally came off the bench and is returning early from injury....

The Lakers were +18 Net in LeBron's minutes (+4 ON, -14 OFF) and -44 Net in Jarred Vanderbilt's. "Formidable" indeed.
LeBron came in for Vanderbilt TWICE (-21 across those 8 minutes) and completely shifted the game.
Quite literally the OPPOSITE of what you just described happened.

2kInsider or anyone else - Is it safe to say that 2k never updates player tendencies(step back midrange, stepback 3, etc) in these updates and primarily focuses on ratings/badges?

EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

More accurate would be that they never update tendencies ever. Markkanen still goes through entire games taking 4-5 shots.

Yes. Tendencies are handled by the gameplay team and they update them whenever they want rather than adhering to a schedule. It could be a random Wednesday during the year, and there are never any update notes.

More intensive tendencies like Stepback 3 are rarely updated (I personally wouldn't update them more than once a year, and never mid-season).

Sirdez- Yeah. I notice games with guys like Derozan taking 4-6 shots the whole game. I thought about at least adjusting the touches ratings for all teams to see if that would make a difference in shot distribution during a game..

2kInsider- Thanks. I figured as much

Gimme a break. Anyone who watched the game saw LeBron completely shift the fluid chemistry the team developed without him and especially non coincidentally contributed to them playing the worst defense we’ve probably seen from the team since the trade deadline.

Plus/minus is hardly a barometer for how 2K rates its players. Bron had a -117 plus/minus in the 2022 season and he had a 96 OVR. Comical.

Confirmation bias is you reaming the 2K team for “ratings ineptitude” yet defending the most glaring example of said ineptitude or backdoor biases, because it’s LeBron. Not only is his 3 points rating not reflecting his seasonal performance but his defensive ratings and badges are so out of place they’d be better equipped to Jokic, and we know he’s not even close to deserving them.
