Still Playing NBA2K19 MyLeague, Convince Me I Should Move On

I'm over here still playing NBA2K19. I'm enjoying the basketball experience. I buy the game every year but didn't see many differences in the newer versions of NBA2K20, 21, 22 or 23 in MyNBA, MyLeague or MyGM other than the MyNBA eras feature that would make me want to switch over.

While I tend to stay in MyLeague, I think NBA2K19 traditional MyGM is the last great MyGM.

Now I might want to change over to NBA2K24 because of the changes in the collective bargaining agreement in real life but I'm not sure if those will make the next release.

For you MyLeaguer's out there, can you convince me why I should have moved forward to the new releases the past few years?

Re: Still Playing NBA2K19 MyLeague, Convince Me I Should Move On

I think you're right about the MyGM part. They ruined it in 2K20 and my understanding is that now the role-playing elements are no longer in MyNBA (judging purely from complaints I've seen on this board).

I would say that if MyGM is significantly more fun for you than the MyLeague experience, then you may genuinely just be best hanging back on 2K19. If the MyLeague experience is plenty entertaining for you, then there's no reason not to upgrade. You now have more control over the structure / mechanics of your league, including new possibilities afforded by Eras. That's on top of the genuine advances in graphics and gameplay.

The two ideal upgrade options would be:
    • 2K24 on PS5/XSX (if the latest gameplay & graphical advances are more important to you than having the most league/Eras functionality and the most realism, i.e., in terms of player models, arenas, scoreboards, etc.)
    • 2K23 on PC (if it's vice versa for you, i.e., you value greater functionality + realism > latest graphics + gameplay)

Obviously your access to console vs. PC would likely influence that decision too.

There's nothing wrong with sticking with 2k19. Personally, I love 2k23 but people like different things.
I still often play NBA Live 2004 because of some of the specific things about that game.
        Play what you like.
        NCAA: Kentucky Wildcats
        MLB: Atlanta Braves
        NBA: San Antonio Spurs

19 plays well but I could never get enough fouls/FTs called in it. Plus there’s no in game injuries too I think?

stick to 19. better gameplay and functionalities did not really improve.

The gameplay has been basically the same since 2016. Maybe even earlier than that. So unless you care about legends or playing with old rosters no need to switch

If you are an old head the Eras is probably the best feature in a sports game in a while.

And grab MJ Wizards Rosters for them and 2k23 has really incredible longevity, IMO.

Also personally I think the gameplay is pretty on point. Some great animations. Guys actually get hurt in games with the right settings. Fouls a little low but not terrible. Game is straight up fun to play. I’ve never played a 2k this long into the offseason.

And I only play MyNBA, real player% so take that for what it’s worth.

Biggest gripe is that real player free throw % is bugged and teams, especially user shoot way to good from the line.

I mean, league functionality has drastically improved, even just for the simple fact of having control over the league start date. Didn’t 2K19 also lack Sim Sliders and Force Win? Those are super useful for simming. Also I think can’t you customize a lot more stuff when setting up a MyNBA save? 2K22 & 23 mods kill 2K19 mods too, if we’re talking league functionality on PC. I suppose you could say functionalities didn’t really improve if you don’t personally value the many particular ways in which they improved, but one can always say that.

As an old-gen 2Ker, it’s wild to me to see the variance in takes on the latest new-gen gameplay. I realize it’s subjective but I’ll see a post like this saying it’s basically as good as it was 7 years ago, then others claiming it’s a complete night-and-day thing going even from old-gen 2K23 to new-gen 2K23. Feels like some folks must be exaggerating, but I can’t tell who. From an old-gen perspective, I prefer 2K23 gameplay over previous games, but the differences are more in the vein of being just that — differences — not objectively good or bad, just nerfs or buffs in this or that area as we’re used to seeing from game to game. It’s the wild variance in old-gen <-> new-gen comparisons that confuses me.

If i can recall correctly Coach2K, we play 2k the same way (Fictional roster, offline MyLeague/MyNBA) and i will say that 2k23 was the first year since 2019 that was worth the jump for me.

                      My personal pros and cons

                      Pros:
                      -Game looks great on PS5
-Gameplay is solid with the right slider sets. I can get it to where i can make more contested/real life type shots
                      -Force win is an upgrade
-Slight and i mean very slight improvement with CAP
-if i get tired of my fictional league and i can do a separate “MyEras” file

                      Cons (for my playstyle)
-Losing all my MyLeague history built up frok 2K19 sucked
-Having to create my fictional roster from scratch
                      -Team Takeover
-Help defense was a bit better in 2K19 with the right coach adjustments IMO
-some legacy bugs are still there in MyNBA

My biggest hurdle since 2k19 has been are the updates worth it to justify the gargantuan size leg work to get the game ready for how i like to play. And now at the end of 2K23’s cycle i will say the answer was yes it was

I am now looking forward to what new things are offered in 2K24. Best of luck on making your decision coach. Remember watching your youtube videos back in the day

If you don't have a Xbox Series X or PS5, you have zero reasons to upgrade. If you do, 2k23 is by far the best MyLeague due to Eras and its not even close.

...XBox Series X or PS5 or PC. Eras is essentially 2K's lite version of a retro PC mod. If I'm not mistaken, the only notable thing PC can't incorporate from Eras is the new commentary with Mike Fratello. Everything else is not only doable on PC, but significantly better from a realism / historical accuracy standpoint and also in terms of technical flexibility (i.e., able to adjust more variables, or to adjust them more freely).

I don't believe that is true. Era's mode on PS5 and XBox Series X has rule changes for each Era, league expansion when appropriate, appropriate schedules, filters (if desired), each Era plays different (you will hardly see any 3 point shots in 83-84). I'm not sure what the PC mods can do exactly as haven't used them but don't believe they can match what is in Era mode on PS5/XBox series X. I'm not knocking PC users (I preferred 2K19 on my PC), I just don't believe mods = what is available in Era mode on PS5/Series X.

Oh yeah I forgot about league size; on PC you do still have to do the old-school 2K thing of having filler teams if you start pre-30 teams, which to be fair is annoying, but IMO that's pretty heavily outweighed by the positives.

For the other stuff you mention though:
                              • You have more control over league rules on PC, for instance I don't think you can disable the 3-point line in MyNBA (or can you?). The rules won't change automatically, but I think for control-freak franchise players like most of us on this board, flipping those switches at the appropriate years is not really any kind of chore (I think it's fun to track and implement manually myself, but I'm a dweeb )
                              • Similar point re: expansion. It's such a seismic, rare event for the league that it's hardly a chore to click to enable one or two teams once every 10 or 20 seasons (whether as an actual expansion team or by turning a filler team into its actual self).
                              • Each Era playing different feels like a negative to me, at least if it's totally under the hood (which it is, right?). Every year we pull our hair out trying to getting plain ol' modern 2K gameplay to play out correctly with sliders, so relying on 2K to play god behind closed doors with the evolution of NBA play-styles just sounds disastrous to me. Better IMO to just have a few era-appropriate slider sets that work for your play style and to use good rosters that simply don't have 3s as a part of, say, Moses Malone's tendencies in the first place.
                              • For filters, even though I'm not a filter guy, we have the in-game 80s filter on PC and the others may be possible too, but I haven't explored it much because of my lack of interest and also the fact that ReShade can be used to overlay any PC game with really any conceivable filter, so it's a bit of a non-issue anyway.

I wasn't aware of 'appropriate schedules'; what does that mean? The literal schedules from each year? If so then indeed that's not currently doable, but again I dunno how put out I am by 1995-96 Hornets @ Nuggets taking place on Feb. 21 as opposed to Apr. 19. In any case you have more control over start years on PC, which to me is much more important, and you can transition a pre-1980 retro save into a post-1980 one, which I don't think is possible on console.

Overall though, mods do the same sorts of things they did in 2K19 -- give you more accurate player likenesses, scoreboards, sounds, music, jerseys, courts, arenas (including real ads instead of "2K Sports" everywhere), etc. etc. etc., which is really the heart of any immersive retro 2K experience and is really the selling point of Eras as well, there's just less flexibility for a gaming company to get everything right (due to legal and time reasons).
