Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Online play? Eh, you may want to spend some time off line until you learn the mechanics and get back into using that muscle memory. I'd definitely start with Franchise mode and do all the tutorials and mini-games.https://forums.operationsports.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2049813056Originally posted by Therebelyell626I am going to create a team called "the happy town fundament rapscallions" and hurt your already diminishing image

Skills trainer will get you competent. The mechanics haven't changed much since the PS1/PS2 days.

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
For sure do Skills Trainer stuff for a bit to get back in the swing of the controls and such. Depending on how into online play you want to get, you might want to look a little online for "meta" plays or formations to get a baseline for some general ideas if you don't want to just rely on your football knowledge.I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). I write it, and it hits your inbox every Friday morning (for freeeeeee). We also have an official OS Discord you can now join.Comment

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Awww yes!!! A fellow player in his 40’s, I’m 44 and been playing this game since the very 1st madden. I still do all the tutorial stuff every year when the game comes out to get a feel for the new game. I start off in franchise before I start online play just to get the feel of everything like the others have said. I can’t just jump into H2H since I’m older now, it’s hard to keep with the young bucks sometimes lolComment

I’m 55 and have had every madden game also, I’m offline only. I have enjoyed playing this since the very first madden, football video games have come a long way.
I remember playing Atari 2600 football (3 on 3) also intellivision and just about every other football video game. I hope I can keep playing them at least another 20 years. [emoji3]

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Do all the above and before you venture off into the land of online cheese, try to setup a game with a fellow OSer. That way you don't have your opponent going for it on 4th and 43 from their own 13 and then disconnecting after they fail to convert.Comment

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Turn the passing to "Classic" and leave on the assists to start, that will help. If you are comfortable with how match coverage works, turn it on in the Coaching Adjustments, otherwise zone will be spot drops (bad for defense, easier to understand)
Pick one position on defense and focus on it - some guys like MLB, some like safety. Up to you.
If you wanna play online, start with Superstar mode - super-simple gameplay and the games are over very, very fast so you're not locked in with some loser for 30 minutes.Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.Comment

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Do not be afraid to set the difficulty to Rookie or Pro while you are learning the game. You're learning, it's okay to set the game to a more forgiving difficulty. At the same time, do be aware that the default difficulty setting for online head-to-head ranked is All Madden.
The early missions in Ultimate Team can onboard you with the rules and basic strategies in football if it's been a while since you've interacted with the sport. You don't have to pay any money to play or complete those missions, in fact I believe the entirety of the single-player experience of MUT can be completed without spending a dime.
Use the Skills Trainer as others have said. It will be especially handy to tattoo defensive coverage shells to your brain so you can learn to recognize those shells in-game and audible into beaters. To that end, pay particular attention on the "Attacking [Coverage]" drills.Comment

It's never too late to get back in the game. But be prepared for a bit of growing pains as you adjust. Like the waxing scene from 40 Year Old Virgin: (warning language)

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
Lol You just described Madden Ultimate Team. That's the only mode I've played all year in Madden 23. It is frustrating the types of opponents you have to deal with at times, but I do have many good hard-fought games also. Oh and I'm 63 still going strong, got Madden 24 pre-ordered.Comment

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
At age 56, I still get in a game or two every now and then. Haven't completed even a single season franchise in years and don't take these games as seriously as I once did. I've been at OS over 20 years now and people still complain about the same issues
Recently bought all of the NCAA and Madden games from 10-12 and enjoy the trip down memory lane. The funny thing is the slider sets I used back then are beyond my ability now. Lol. I stick with either default AP(AA)or AM(Heisman).
I'm also a legacy tabletop sports simulation gamer from the late 70s and 80s and that market is thriving right now with APBA, Statis Pro, StratOMatic, and PLAAY Games. That is where I'm spending most of my free time.
I did enjoy the Madden beta this year and am looking forward to going through the trial. FIFA look good too.....so far.Comment

Re: 49 years old, how do I start playing madden?
I'm 53 but I've been playing Madden every year all of my life. Heres my advice though:
1. Play against CPU for awhile on Pro. When you start winning a lot switch to All-Pro.
2. Take a note on plays you find reliable and don't fear will result in turnovers.
3. Don't play for more than about a week or two against the CPU as playing against humans is nothing like playing the computer.
4. Go online and pick a team with a strong rushing attack where you won't need to rely on passing. Make sure their defense is decent. I would recommend Dallas (my team) but losing Zeke means they aren't as strong so maybe look at other teams who have two great runners.
5. Play ball control, pass only when you need to, avoid risky plays or plays you haven't tried out online.
And last my tip is never quit, if someone is whipping you disregard the score and simply play to see if you can figure out how to stop them. Never quit early, you lose out on valuable knowledge, even though it sucks to endure a beating.
Plus you will be able to respect yourself at the end of the day.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
