    Re: College Football Off Topic

Has anyone seen any stats from the weekend regarding average number of plays and total broadcast time? I have seen a few reactions from players/coaches about how much shorter the game was in terms of plays, but the total TV experience did not seem any shorter.

Mainly just trying to figure out if commercials are up this year or if the broadcasts actually were shorter with the new rules.

I saw a tweet that someone who watched the LSU/FSU game had a stopwatch going. Had 55 minutes and change of ads, about 2.5 hours of game action.

Not sure how that measures up to past years

EDIT: Here is the post I saw: https://twitter.com/RedditCFB/status...394425186?s=20

Found a full comparison by year.

Through 1 week, both the average game time & number of plays were only slightly down from the prior full year. Interestingly, if you use the period of 2017-2019 then number of snaps are down by roughly the same amount by game time is up 6-7 minutes.

Too many unknown variables to make a proper analysis at this time (types of plays called, tv vs. non tv games, etc). Hopefully they keep this updated each week.

Editor's note: A 2024 version of this post has been published that looks at the impact of the two-minute warning on college football game length. The start of the 2023 college football season was marked by two big themes: realignment and new rules. While there is no shortage of realignment news on this website, we looked at how the new…

Reading this story about Florida player NIL deal. More like loan shark deal. He paid 400k up front. But they would be taking like 15% of his pay in the NFL. Which is insane!!

An NIL deal signed in 2022 that gave Bears rookie Gervon Dexter more than $400,000 in exchange for 15% of his future earnings in the NFL violated a state law, according to a Florida state legislator.

It depends if he makes that much. He did end up making it but it wasn't a guarantee. It was an "investment" and it paid off. The question for him is what did he do with the money? If he already spent the money, then it was a terrible deal. If he invested it, it may not be a huge issue. If he signs another contract, it is a terrible deal.

It's not a loan as the terms don't say he has to pay anything unless he makes it to a professional league. It was probably taking advantage of a college player though. He should have included additional payouts based on performance and draft status. Definitely need people that understand the metrics to review a deal like this to make sure the player isn't giving up too much for little risk on the company side.

Great to call them out. FSU DT got screwed by NCAA because someone at UM complained.

NCAA is pushing back to justify themselves and also try to stop some of the portal craziness. They need to fairly enforce the rules but stop all the biased decisions they make all the time.

FSU DT got denied because his reasoning for moving to Miami last year was for the sick relative and then he used the same excuse to try and be immediately eligible when he transferred to FSU. FSU knew that it was a stretch for him to be eligible this year, lol. This was not a rivalry issue, as if the NCAA would even listen to Miami in the first place.

The Tez Walker ruling was embarrassing, pathetic, and most of all - not surprising.

Overall feels like an attempt to combat the Transfer Portal by denying most of the waivers

                      "For reasons related to the student-athletes' physical or mental well-being;
Due to exigent circumstances outside the student-athlete's control (e.g. physical or sexual assault or discrimination based on a protected class); or
Assertions involving diagnosed education impacting disabilities"

I'm sure a lot of players had legit mental health reasons, but the NCAA was determined to reign in the transfers.

Isn't there a transfer portal rule that's supposed to change next year or following. I want to say it's was a proposal to cut down the Transfer window from 60 days to 30. I wouldn't mind that. That way less stalling from the athletes and more time in the offseason program. I felt the final 15 day window was too close to the Spring games.

That's the part that's ultra confusing. This guy thought these things were ok? I could imagine some of could of been miscommunication. I try to leave room for that. But this women history is very clear. She was literally there to show your players about this. Then you proceeded to do this with her? I just don't get it.
