2K24 Magic vs. Bird Era Roster Project - Complete, Accurate 1983-84 Roster

I'm working on doing a complete and accurate 1983-84 roster for the Magic vs. Bird Era on 2K24. This won't be just base faces with hair changed or CAPs with random tendencies or imported from some player already in the game. The goal here is to get this roster as close to the real thing as possible. I grew up watching these guys play but this project still involves researching information on players, locating photos, watching videos of their play, and testing. I don't have a time estimate yet. I've been focusing first on making CAPs for the missing players. I'll have a better idea of the timeline soon as I get deeper into the project. I previously worked on a custom 1984-85 roster before we had Eras and that was about 3/4 done, so that gave me a good starting point because there is a lot of overlap. I will periodically update my progress. The project will include:

• Full, complete 83-84 rosters with full custom CAPS for any missing players (including free agents).
• Accurate info, jersey numbers, shoes and gear for all players (or as close as we can get with the 2K options)
• Custom signature style and tendency edits for all players including custom jump shots for those that need updating
• Missing coaches and updates to all line-ups and rotations based on the full roster, as well as playbook updates
• Each team will have 14 players to keep teams from signing free-agents at the start of a franchise. Players will be on the teams where they played for the bulk of the season. To get to 14 players, if needed, I will add guys who were waived by the team during the season or players they drafted but cut.

• Body types fixed where possible for default players
• Full CAPs finished for several missing players on other teams (Orlando Woolridge, Quintin Dailey, Wallace Bryant, Mitchell Wiggins, Ronnie Lester, Jawann Oldham, Greg Ballard, Terry Tyler, Mike Mitchell, Dan Roundfield, Mickey Johnson, Lewis Lloyd, Phil Ford, James Bailey, Jeff Wilkins, J.J. Anderson, Ray Williams, Louis Orr, Mark Landsberger, Kelvin Ransey, Mark McNamara)

Here is a teaser video with some of the work and testing I've been doing so far including missing players such as Andrew Toney, Sedale Threatt, Orlando Wooldridge, Quintin Dailey, Mike Mitchell, Lewis Lloyd, Dan Roundfield, Greg Ballard, Terry Tyler, Mickey Johnson, and Phil Ford. The 2K footage in the video is all from CPU vs. CPU action and you can see from the real-life clips that the guys are really playing like they should be. More updates to come soon.

I hear ya, I pumped for this roster too! In addition to the completed CAPs in the video (Andrew Toney, Sedale Threatt, Orlando Woolridge, Quintin Dailey, Mike Mitchell, Lewis Lloyd, Dan Roundfield, Greg Ballard, Marques Johnson, Terry Tyler, and Phil Ford), the following additional guys missing from the 1983-84 roster are now done as well: Ray Williams, Mitchell Wiggins, Louis Orr, Kelvin Ransey, James Bailey and Carlos Clark. Making the most important missing players first and the guys who can fill out teams with the least number of missing players. That way I can get some game testing going along the way.

Is this roster complete or still a work in progress?

Still a work in progress. Takes a lot of time to do quality CAPs and work out accurate custom jumpshots, tendencies, etc. Here is the most recent batch of missing guys that are done

I fixed the bodies of several default guys and I'm working on specific teams now. I'll probably post a partial roster on 2KShare once I have a decent chunk of teams done.

After I get the first two teams done, I'm going to post a work-in-progress roster and it will have all the CAPs from both videos included on the unfinished teams. I'm working on the Sixers right now and then I'm going to get Boston finished. The tendencies, ratings, and signature style are off for most of these default roster guys, but shouldn't take me too much longer to get those first 2 teams finished.

The Sixers are done. Here is the team preview. Full CAPs added for Andrew Toney and Sedale Threatt. Updated CAP faces for Wes Matthews, Sam Williams, and Leo Rautins. Gear/shoes fixed for all. Custom jumpshot and signature style fixes for all. Custom rating/tendency edits throughout the roster. Dunk packages will be edited once 2K fixes that bug.

Working on the Celtics now. I'm going to post the work-in-progress roster to 2K share when I have 4 teams done. That will include all the caps for the other teams already done as shown in the prior videos.

i.e. Phil Jackson never comes available in the head coaches pool if you start in the Magic/Bird era...

The Celtics are done. Here is the team preview. Full CAPs added for Carlos Clark, John Schweitz, and Winfred King. Gear/shoes fixed for all. Custom jumpshot and signature style fixes for all. Custom rating/tendency edits throughout the roster.

The Celtics only had 12 players on their roster all season that year, so I added Schweitz and King to avoid the CPU filling their roster in a MyNBA franchise. Schweitz was drafted by the Celtics in 1982 and waived by them just a few days before the start of the 1983-84 season. King was drafted by the Celtics in 1983 and played with them in the preseason but didn't make the team. Some of the Celtics that year wore dark green Nikes but the options in-game aren't great because they only have a much brighter green that just doesn't look right for these guys, so I went with the black Nike Blazer Mids for those guys since the others wore black Converse weapons that year. I really wish the custom shoes on the shoe creator carried over on uploaded rosters.

This team took more work than you'd think since their 2K roster doesn't have as many holes as other teams. There are lots of issues with the ratings and tendencies for this team. It seems like they just recycled the guys from the 1985-86 Celtics classic team without any adjustments. For example, Ainge didn't start in 83-84 and was just a role player with 5.4 points a game and roughly 16 minutes a game, but they have him rated more like his seasons as a starter where he was scoring 14-17 points a game. Bird shot only 24.7% on 3s that year but they have him rated as a 96 three point shooting, more consistent with his subsequent seasons. McHale had one of the best up and under post moves in the history of the NBA and it was his go-to move, but 2K has him at only a 20 tendency for his up and under post move. I've re-balanced their ratings and done a thorough editing of the tendencies.

Lakers are up next, then the Rockets, and then I'll post the work-in-progress roster after that.

I started in on the Lakers but first did a LOT of MyNBA testing yesterday to fine tune the attributes and tendencies to make sure stats are coming out in MyNBA like they should. I needed to do some tuning with the Sixers and Celtics to get my scales sorted out before I make any other teams so I don't have to do a bunch of finetuning later on all the teams. I will probably release sliders and MyNBA simulation settings with the finalized roster.
