Tovarich: I thought we could be hyper aggressive sometimes. I'm not sure anything we do counts as that after seeing what Missouri's definion is.

Reporter: You were very quick to yank Pawlak, might you make a change there like you did at SG?

Tovarich: If we're being pressed like that, maybe. He was good at it last game, and awful before and after that. He was a quick 0/3 on layups blocking the press. As soon as I switched Jack in, he made everything, suddenly everything that wasn't a foul against Pawlak was one against Jack. Both centers got to the line too. They were hacking everyone who went in, and then once we got the C in foul trouble, it seemed like we had such a huge advantage down low, that even in a half court offense, I skipped a lot of 3's we'd normally shoot to get it down low.

Reporter: You pressed them a little bit in the first half, was that just because they were like you usually say?

Tovarich: And the fact that we were down 11-3 in the blink of an eye. Then we pretty well ran away with things after that. It's not hard to see who has depth and who doesn't, so these teams that press us for some reason do it with little depth, so if they want a track meet, we'll give them one. I've got better depth than most of the teams we're playing. If they want to get worn out and tired and get in foul trouble, I'm all for it.

Reporter: Did Lewis earn his starting job back?

Tovarich: That's a bit of a catch-22. He was good off the bench, so maybe the bench is what's best for him? Keon didn't get a lot of looks but he still made 3 of his 4 shots. He got some assists too.

Reporter: Speaking of assists, those were spread out a lot more than usual.

Tovarich: Indeed. They were tight on all the shooters, so we weren't open for a lot of 3's. The big guys got some assists kicking it out. We were passing a lot because of their agression.

Reporter: Even though you forced 19 turnovers, is it concerning they still shot almost 60%?

Tovarich: Most people shoot that against us, but I was so tired of seeing their PG bombing every 3 he took. I don't care who else beats us, I just was determined to double him every time and get the ball out of his hands. Then of course their other guard had 17 too and I got tired of watching him beat us, so we just doubled every guard and small forward they put out there and they all threw it away a fair amount surprisingly.

Reporter: You called Keon by his first name. Are you feeling ok coach?

Tovarich: Yeah, I'm a little more aware of people's first names now. I inherited Stivers, Tamayo and Riley and Petrauskas, so I mainly just see what's on their jersey and their last name on statistics. Now that the team is full of people I actually took time recruiting, I'm a little more aware of first names. Every time I got an award list with Tamayo's name on it, I almost forgot his first name was Stevie.

Reporter: Do you have a preference Seton Hall or Washington State tomorrow?

Tovarich: Not really. I just want to know why we're not at Madison Square Garden for this. This arena St. John's plays in when they're not at the garden looks like it's for high school teams.

Tovarich: Not a lot of missed shots in that one. It was a little hectic in the first half, way more so than you'd expect against a Tony Bennett team. Li shot great, so did Pawlak. The big guys did a decent job. None of the guards did a lot shooting. Luckily we piled up some free throws in that first half. The refs really swallowed the whistles in the second. They were at 0 fouls when they had to foul us 7 times at the end.

Reporter: Low minutes for the backups again. It seems pretty random?

Tovarich: I wasn't feeling the bench today. Or any guards. Maybe they'll be on tomorrow. Some people are on every game, some are off. It's pretty random what 18-21 year olds do and feel every day. Some day we shoot the lights out from 3, and can't make a shot in the paint. Some days it's the other way around. Some days the refs call things and some they don't. Sometimes we get stuffed 8 times in the paint. It's not like they're robots.

Reporter: Are you sure the team won't get tired from playing 5 games in 5 days?

Tovarich: Yes. Oh, maybe they are robots?

Tovarich: That might be the worst game I've ever been apart of.

Reporter: Uh coach, why were you walking around different places in the arena the whole game? At one point you were in the press box and maybe walking around the rafters?

Tovarich: Yeah, I think I had vertigo. I was getting dizzy trying to coach the game. Everything was either blurring or lagging, like I was watching a video that was buffering or something. It was awful. I was getting a headache and I needed to walk around and see if there was somewhere I could watch from that wasn't like that. It was such a weird perspective, I really didn't care for any of it. I tried a bunch of spots for a minute and just had to get up and go somewhere else constantly.

Reporter: Do you think your players had vertigo too the way they shot?

Tovarich: Some, for sure. We were 0-9 on 3's at halftime. They pressed even up 24 in the second half. Their interior defense was incredible. I think the refs had vertigo too though. 10 blocks for them and 0 for us because every time we breathed on them it was a foul. Their players didn't seem affected. They shot the lights out. It was like playing Marquette in the tournament, but there's something wrong with Seton Hall's arena. It's dizzying.

Reporter: Will you coach tomorrow's game?

Tovarich: We'll see. I may have to leave that up to one of the assistants. I don't know if I can handle that again.

Tovarich: I hope never to see this arena for the rest of my career. I'm still dizzy.

Reporter: Why not try coaching from the rafters again?

Tovarich: That wasn't fun either. And I had to use signals to the players and coaches for them to know what I wanted, and we play Michigan soon, so we can't do that.

Reporter: Did you think you had a chance to force OT there at the end?

Tovarich: No. We shot 0% on game-tying shots for the entire game. I knew it would miss. Everyone missed everything just about. And we were outrebounded by a far inferior team as usual, so even when we forced misses, which we didn't force many of, they got it right back. They had 11 offensive rebounds on 22 missed shots.

Reporter: So what's wrong with Seton Hall's arena?

Tovarich: I'd love to know. But we shot terribly both games, both our opponents shot great and the players must be as dizzy as I am, maybe that's why they couldn't see the ball to rebound either and missed so many shots.

Reporter: Any positives from the tournament?

Tovarich: Absolutely. It's over and I know never to come to it again or play @ Seton Hall.

Tovarich: Something obviously is broken. -30 in rebounds is the most hilariously lopsided in our long history of hilariously lopsided rebounding statistics. They were 73% at halftime. They cooled off tremendously in the second half, not that it matter. They got most of their misses back anyway. It was nice of them to stop pressing us up 74-42. Didn't matter who was trying to break the press, they defended it almost perfectly every time. Got the center in foul trouble eventually, not that it mattered. They had guards out jumping our centers the entire game.

Reporter: What can you do to switch things up?

Tovarich: I don't know. I hadn't seen this kind of performance since....oh, right, Marquette in the tournament last year. I think I learned though that when the opponent plays like that, there is literally nothing I can change to make a difference. No matter who plays, they're going to miss layups against perfect defense. We're going to shoot poorly. They're going to dominate the boards no matter who I put it on what I try.

Reporter: Any changes to the starters?

Tovarich: Maybe. I don't really know what to change right now. It's not any one person's fault that 3 opponents in a row have shot over 60%. No one on our team has done a great job scoring, no one's done a good job rebounding.

            Reporter: Is it team unity?

Tovarich: Can't be. They had even less than us. I don't have the answer right now.

Reporter: Do you expect to get your lone signee in the early signing period?

            Tovarich: I think so, yes.

Tovarich: Well, that was de ja vu for a half. Everything that happened the last 3 games went on in the first half. Suotamo couldn't make a layup, even against a very small guard at one point threw him off enough to miss a layup. They shot 77% in the first half. I wish I knew what changed. Obviously if they're going to shot 77%, we may as well just go for a steal on every single pass they throw the entire game, since we can't force a miss anyway. We rebounded semi-competently throughout, so no idea what changed there either, but something did. I don't think I gave a halftime speech that changed anything. They just came out and couldn't hit a shot all of a sudden.

Reporter: So do you think you're out of your funk?

Tovarich: That can come back any time. Such a random sport. Things seemed too easy at 8-0, many of which were easy games. I did not see this 3 1/2 game skid of incompetence coming. So, no. We may go right back in one. We may have some other 3 game losing streak somewhere. Who knows?

Reporter: Did you make any actual halftime adjustments though?

Tovarich: Of course, we got tighter on D on some people. I had done that with some before halftime though, so no idea what made the difference. Night and day for them. We were consistent throughout for the most part.

Reporter: Do pep talks help out this sort of thing?

Tovarich: I have no idea what that does or doesn't do besides make people feel more confident, but confidence doesn't always equate to playing defense or making shots or getting rebounds. I've given some over the years and the players comes out even worse than before after that, so I can't say.

Reporter: Are you ready to make a switch at center?

Tovarich: We rate them both equally, just like we do at SG and PF and then our SF vs. a third guard all comes out the same. I yanked Suotamo in that one for sure because he couldn't do a damn thing. But that might be different tomorrow.

Did coach Tovarich slow down the game in the second half? Or was the defense that much better/shooting that much worse? It was 92 combined points in H1 and 51 in H2.

Just for a few minutes toward the end once I got a lead, which I think came with about 3 minutes to go. Michigan pressed the whole first half and that sped things up a lot. I had to press to come back from down 18 in the second half. Michigan just went from shooting 77% in the first half to probably 35% in the second. The Hilltoppers were pretty much the same mediocre shooting in both halves.

I haven't forgotten about yours. Just not into NBA at all, so waiting for all that to get through haha

Tovarich: Two games ago we gave up 99 against a lesser team, now we hold Kentucky at Rupp to 49, all while doing the exact same thing both games. Riddle me that.

Reporter: Are you concerned your point guard only has 12 assists in 5 games?

Tovarich: That is bizarre. 4 of those games we were pressed endlessly and rarely got into half court offense. Kentucky did that South Alabama half court trap here and there, but didn't press until the very end. The two big guys lead in assists. They did a great job finding open 3 point shooters. They scored a lot too. Everything went through them tonight. We had a rough shooting night from outside, so that cost everyone some assists. Some of the games did feel like the players who caught Galbreath's passes were cursed, but that didn't feel that way tonight.

Reporter: Is outrebounding Kentucky a good sign?

Tovarich: That was pretty even tonight. I'll take that every game, but no, we're not doing anything differently there either. Kentucky may have had us until they took a lot of 3's the last few minutes there and we had some uncontested rebounds. A lot of aspects of this game often just feel like they are beyond my control. For 4 straight losses, we got dominated on the boards, including a 42-12 night. It's so random and I don't know why.

Reporter: Are you happy with the current starting 5 or will there be more tweaking?

Tovarich: Camper really started out hot shooting 3's and he's cooled off, but Lewis hasn't exactly taken off either, so we'll leave that alone for now. The PF spot is one I'm quick to yank if we're being pressed and one of them can't finish a layup on a drive. Center is a tossup. Suotamo is supposed to be the better rebounder. I'm not sure the numbers bear that out if you think about it as rebounds per minute played. They both have really off nights both scoring and rebounding sometimes. We've run into a lot of incredible interior defense lately.

Reporter: Why do you sound sarcastic every time you say that coach?

                    Tovarich (smiles)

Reporter: Were you disappointed not to get your PG recruit signed in the early period?

Tovarich: Yeah, I think we must have been about 98% of the way there, but couldn't quite finish the deal yet. I see Detroit is going after him hard. I would like to think we can outrecruit them. We have a good backup plan too though, but I prefer the guy we've offered.

Tovarich: Frustrating game. At least we got a win, which only was because of the cupcake we played. Any remotely respectable team would've beaten us today.

Reporter: Are you referring to Li missing the 3 at the buzzer?

Tovarich: Well, that didn't help. But he singlehandedly won that game, so we'll forgive him for missing that shot.

                      Reporter: Was it the rebounding?

Tovarich: That's always frustrating. -11 against Denver is embarrassing. Their SF was outjumping both our PF's and C's consistently.

Reporter: Was it your big men's shooting?

Tovarich: Suotamo started 0-4 with 3 of them blocked. He was somewhat useful after that. Shehan got some points. Pawlak couldn't make a layup either. It was like shots in the paint were banned. Luckily Li hit so many 3's.

Reporter: You switched both starters at SG and PF. What went into that?

Tovarich: Camper was starting because he was shooting well. He's been so-so since. Lewis has improved some. Both were mediocre today. That'll remain flexible. Neither PF was good today, but Jack was a tad better. No one was pressing us today, so that wasn't a factor. Just in general Jack seems like the better offensive option. That may continue to be flexible as well.

                      Reporter: Any other frustrations?

Tovarich: Of course. Our defense continues to be awful. Some guy off their bench went for 22 and hit every 3 he took. He should've been the offensive plan on every drive and they'd have killed us. He was unstoppable. They had 3 pretty unstoppable people, no matter how tight we played on them. They'd keep hitting everything even with someone right in their face.

Tovarich: I can only laugh at all that. Suotamo missed his first 4 shots, one of which was a breakaway layup where someone literally looked like they flew in out of nowhere and knocked the ball out of his hand from behind while he's in mid air. Shehan never made a shot. They were all layups. It was hilarious to watch the things it took to miss every shot we took from point blank range. They shot 60% again. I'm getting used to that. We had good tight D on a lot of those shots. I think the shot chart shows that we shot 10/40 in the paint. I have to try and laugh because there's nothing else I can do.

Reporter: Do you think the schedule prepared you for conference play?

Tovarich: I don't know what preparedness comes out of performances like that. Obviously some other things were going on. I know Suotamo knows how to make a layup. I know Shehan knows how to make a layup. Of course, I wish they'd just dunk it more, but for some reason they refuse. Those are harder to miss than layups where things can inexplicably bounce against you in hilarious ways. 9 turnovers? 4 by Suotamo himself? A center? 4 turnovers? It's like he was hexed by a voodoo priest. I know I scheduled tough teams but no, I don't think anything like that helps for conference play because there was literally nothing that could be done to overcome all those things. Nothing that went on in that game is some kind of correctable mistake.

Reporter: @ Troy is usually one of the tougher conference games, but they're down this year, so do you expect to win that easily?

Tovarich: I don't expect to win anything easily. I know a lot of these guys are pretty new starters, but we're starting 3 JR's and 2 SO's. The whole arbitrary poor performance due to low team unity means we can probably lose anywhere to anyone.

Tovarich: Luckily they only had one Reggie Miller on their team.

Reporter: Why bench Suotamo and start Shehan?

Tovarich: I couldn't watch any more missed layups, and then of course, his first shot, which should have been an easy dunk he managed to miss a finger roll off the front of the rim. I almost benched benched him, like put Zoellner in for the rest of the game. Luckily we had a big deal and we were able to work on some things in the second half?

Reporter: What all did you work on coach?

Tovarich: Mostly just getting some people going. Jordan's had a rough time. Suotamo's been brutal. We got to the line against the press. Luckily Jack made all his twirly layups because I am getting tired of watching those.

Reporter: You mentioned you wanted more dunks, but they never really materialized.

Tovarich: I think we had 3. I am starting to wonder if Jack knows how to dunk. It's frustrating.

Reporter: Anything bad about this game?

Tovarich: Other than the lack of dunking, no. I think this went pretty well. Hopefully Suotamo and Jordan got some confidence making some shots. No one dominated the boards, but it was a nice group effort to accumulate rebounds. No one had a terrible shooting night. Got some minutes for backups and the walkons who are a little unhappy I know because of their lack of minutes against all the power schools. The PG could have had more assists. I am a little puzzled at that still.

Reporter: Your team unity skyrocketed by starting Shehan instead of Suotamo. Do you think that made a difference?

Tovarich: It's the key to the entire universe. Why is it night and day now? Who knows? I guess we better leave it that way for now. Maybe if Suotamo gets right for a few games in a row, I'll re-visit it.

Tovarich: OK win, little disappointed in the defense all around, but especially the last 5 minutes. I think Monroe made about 8 shots in a row at one point there at the end to get the lead down from 21.

Reporter: How big was it for Suotamo to have such a good scoring night?

Tovarich: I guess I'll cancel the point shaving investigation.

Reporter: Does the rebounding suffer from Shehan being in instead of Suotamo?

Tovarich: The PF spot is the bigger weakness in rebounding for us for sure. We routinely allow opposing PF's to get 10+ rebounds. I don't know that's the center. Suotamo is definitely supposed to be better at it, but the numbers don't exactly bear that out. All in all, the rebounding was its usual level of disappointing.

Reporter: Neither of your PG's accumulated an assist.

Tovarich: Isn't that incredible? Every time they passed to someone, they missed? It's hard to think that's a coincidence, it really is. They pressed a little at the end, so I know there's often no assists there if we drive it in but only 10 for an entire game? Something's very wrong. We had some good transition passing after some turnovers, but that's a bizarre occurance definitely.

Reporter: Some of your guards dunked on breakaways. Why won't your big men?

Tovarich: Great question still. I'd love to know the answer. Jack utterly refuses to dunk the ball even on a breakaway. Both PF's couldn't hit a layup as usual, and when they refuse to dunk, that equals 3/12 combined from them.
