Congrats! NCAA title game here we come.
Thanks. I wish I could get to it tonight with all the momentum I have from unexpected wins, but won't be able to get to it until tomorrow.

Tovarich: Obviously losing a national championship on a buzzer beater is as cruel as it gets. We did a lot right, but missing the front end of a 1 and 1 twice in the final 30 seconds gave them that chance. We still were in decent shape I think. We got the first miss and a rebound to set up the second 1 and 1 and conveniently the leading FT shooter in America misses again. We had fouls to give, so you feel good when there's 2.5 seconds and they're inbounding from behind half court. But they made the perfect pass to whoever on the baseline and he hit it. We must have been centimeters from a steal, but everything that had to happen for them to hit that shot happened. 2/9 on FT's in the game is brutal. We got some steals to keep running the clock. That was the only defense we had. They were shooting 60% like most of our opponents. We had a few scores lead. We just needed to kill about 1 more second somewhere to run them out of time, and we couldn't do it. They're 38-1 for a reason, but it's hard not to feel like we choked that. 22% on FT's is crazy. Galbreath missing 2 in the final 30 seconds is crazy. Nerves maybe I guess. I don't know. It's hard to take. We've been on borrowed time since Nevada somehow beat UCLA for us, but to get that close is brutal. Rebounding was subpar of course. We missed some point blank shots. But you still feel good where you had with 2.5 to go and they crush your dreams anyway. That'd have been tough to take in a regular season game, but in the last game of the season for a championship, that's deflating. That'll be on the highlights forever.

Reporter: What do you say to the players after a loss like that?

Tovarich: Try not to dwell on the ending. Focus on all the things that went into getting to that point. 2/9 FT's obviously was the biggest one.

Reporter: No seniors on the roster, so everyone's back. Will that make everyone believe they can win it next year?

Tovarich: Hopefully. This will be a pre-season top 10 team, maybe top 5. It took a fluke 9 over 1 upset to get us this far most likely though, so that kind of chaos may be what is needed. Then you still have to run a gauntlet of crazy good teams like Texas, who was 2 points in OT from a perfect season and you had them on the ropes and they pulled it out from under you. Hopefully the kids are robots and the emotion of losing like that won't crush them all offseason and they'll just come back next year even better.

Amazing run, terrible loss. Can't believe the missed FTs. What a gut punch.

Tovarich: I released a walkon named Robert Barnard. We'll RS the PG recruit we just signed. The depth chart remains largely unchanged.

Tovarich: Don't take any of that too literally. We actually rate Camper slightly better than Lewis, but Lewis is better at shooting 3's, and is a SR and therefore better for team unity. But we started Camper some games last year and we may again. Jordan will play more at the 3 on the B team. That's all interchangeable based on who's hot that game. The centers both remain even. Suotamo is supposed to be the better rebounder though. Pawlak and Jack also dead even, but Jack shoots 3's better (despite what our ratings say) and seems to (usually) break the press better, which we see often. That's all interchangeable too. Our RS FR Merriex and Flores unfortunately are likely the odd men out and may just get in in blowouts. Blankenship and Zoellner are still great walkons, but unfortunately there is just not room for them on the active roster with some many great players, and it sucks for them for that to happen when they're seniors, but this roster is just crazy deep. Moving on, to the schedule:

Tovarich: Denver coach has moved on to Samford. He is probably hoping I didn't notice. We'll continue with Eastern Kentucky. Then as usual, I randomly guessed some big schools that we'll hope are good. Texas, Duke and North Carolina State are ranked in the pre-season so hopefully that works out. The two tournaments we're in are very disappointing fields with no ranked teams in either, so already annoyed about that. Oh well. Can't know these things.

Reporter: What's the goal in recruiting coach? You have 5 scholarships available.

Tovarich: Yeah, we need just about everything. Both PG's are SR's. We have one RS'ing, so one of those is an absolute must. Shehan will graduate, so another C is an absolute must as well. Another SF is a must as well. The other two we'll just get the best players we can.

Reporter: Is is true you were offered the Florida State and Wake Forest jobs?

Tovarich: Yes, I am offered literally every opening there is. I was hoping Oregon State would be open after the finished last place and had 17 losses, but they are sticking with Kermit. The roster this year is killer. Oregon State and Arizona are the only jobs I'd have given it up for and Arizona was much too good to make a change. Good press conference. See you all after the first game.

Tovarich: I'm sorry to Binghamton's coaches and players that they even had to play this game. I wish the field in this tournament was stronger. That game served no real purpose other than to get all the backups some minutes.

Reporter: You forgot to tell us about your assistants before the season coach.

Tovarich: I thought we all knew the drill on the assistants for now. I forget I even have them sometimes, let alone to bring them up at a pre-season press conference. I fired the two from last year and hired two new ones. I found a slightly better recruiter and a slightly better tape guy than last year's. That's literally all I know about them.

Reporter: +22 in rebounds, is that encouraging no matter how outmatched the opponet?

Tovarich: No. I know some of those types have outrebounded us before, but I draw no conclusions about anything from that, except that we got to see some of the skills of the backups.

Reporter: Do you have a preference between Austin Peay and Marshall?

Tovarich: I assume Marshall is considerably better. I hope to see them take care of business and maybe one of the starters can make it to 10 minutes.

Tovarich: Great comeback. That's the kind of adversity this team needs to learn to overcome all over again, new season and such.

Reporter: Uhh, coach, their only lead was 2-0?

Tovarich: Yeah, and we had to come back from that. They showed great character responding to that adversity.

                  Reporter: Are you serious coach?

Tovarich: Obviously not. Another pointless game. We got outrebounded. Is that the usual speech you want me to give? You'd like to see the big guys dominate a team like that, and big shock, they didn't. We did other things well. 16 turnovers without ever pressing is good defense. The Herd shot poorly. We got to the line, and didn't foul them. Backups got lots of minutes. It would be nice if the big guys rebounded better, didn't miss so many point blank shots, if any of the starters could hit a 3. We didn't turn the ball over. That's an improvement for Capel, who usually can't handle the press. But it all means very little. It's another overmatched opponent, but that gets us ready for Samford, who hired my favorite coach. Good deal for him. Samford's probably better than Denver was. I don't know how he got a promotion. I mean, he's responsible for driving Denver's program into the ground which made it inferior to Samford, but all works out the same.

Tovarich: That's the kind of dream execution that brings you such joy when it happens at the end of the game.

Reporter: Why did you go for a 3 at the buzzer coach?

Tovarich: Because they wouldn't let me go for 4.

Reporter: So revenge for 6 years ago?

                    Tovarich: HE STARTED IT.

Reporter: OK, coach. What did you think of the rebounding?

Tovarich: Definitely better. Suotamo had 9 rebounds in like 6 minutes at halftime. They didn't miss too many shots in the second half. We missed a ton of layups though. I was worried we wouldn't make it to 100. Li struggled from 3, Lewis struggled in general, Flores struggled. Too many misses from point blank, can't let it happen with the century mark on the line like that.

Reporter: So you're not happy just to beat him?

Tovarich: No. That's a given. Hope he enjoyed his one win against us ever and firing off a 3 up 16 or whatever. It's personal. I won't stop until I see him crying in his coaching box. And I will take the towel from the kid myself and go wipe it out and frame it in my office. Then maybe I'll let it end.

Reporter: Li is just 2/15 on 3's so far. Might you make a change there? Or Camper who is shooting 3's better than Lewis?

Tovarich: Camper's overall a better player than Lewis, but 3's is the one advantage Lewis supposed to have, so that's a possible one, maybe we'll give that a try against some of the cupcakes. We may need the team unity against the better teams like Duke and Texas.

Tovarich: That game was a real comedy. The 4 bigs shoot 14/32 all of which are front point blank range. 3 breakaway layups missed, a dunk that got 'blocked'. All 4 of their missed FT's they rebounded and put back in for another basket because 1 point wasn't enough. Despite all the insanity, we fight back and actually take the lead by 2. Then they call timeout and proceed to make 5 3's in a row in the next minute and a half. Literally whatever needed to happen for them to win was apparently going to happen and nothing could stop it. Their 3 point shooting was crazy, and we missed 21 point blank shots and a dunk. I guess it's because we're the 'road' team. That seems to make a big difference for some reason. Congrats to them I guess. Apparently they're amazing.

Reporter: Is the tournament a failure to not win it?

Tovarich: Yes, it's a weak field. We should beat Nebraska easily. It took a hilarious array of errors and absurd 3 point shooting for it not to happen.

Reporter: Is the game against Eastern Michigan tomorrow important to bounce back?

Tovarich: It doesn't change today. I don't really care about Eastern Michigan. Nothing that happens in that game is going to make us better or avoid games like today. They're just going to happen from time to time.

Tovarich: I think being up 7-0 is the worst lead you can possibly have. I am pretty sure that 90% of the time we are ahead 7-0, the other team goes on a double digit run. Sure enough we're down 11-7 all of a sudden. Suotamo missed 14 point blank shots. Pawlak got blocked twice in the same possession after getting a rare rebound, because Eastern Michigan is too good to outrebound. Li couldn't shoot, Lewis couldn't shoot. Luckily the backups piled up a nice lead so I could try to work the starters through some of their numerous problems. Then tried to get the two FR on the end of the bench in up 19 and apparently that means Eastern Michigan has to shoot 100% all of a sudden, so that lead evaporated down to 8 in about a minute and a half and I had to yank them. Dumb game. I don't know what's wrong with everyone but these last two days were awful. Whatever. Off to a different tournament and we'll see if all the same things happen.

                        Reporter: How is recruiting going?

                        Tovarich: Awful.

Reporter: How do you get Suotamo out of his slump?

                        Tovarich: Bench him.

Reporter: Are you frustrated with the team's play coach

                        Tovarich: Yes.

Tovarich: Another good game for the backups. Yippee.

Reporter: What went into the decision to start Shehan over Suotamo?

Tovarich: Shehan just shot 7/21 on point blank shots in the last game. That'll get ya benched.

Reporter: Are you happy with how he responded?

Tovarich: It's pretty meaningless to play well against Northern Illinois. Next up we're the road team in a tournament semifinal. Those are apparently the world's hardest games.

Reporter: Other than trying to catch up against Nebraska and embarrass Samford's coach, you haven't pressed even occasionally, why not?

Tovarich: That's only for when you need to. And yes, I need to against Coach O'Bannon. These other 3 lopsided games, it's unnecessary to press. Besides, Northern Illinois turned it over plenty without it from playing too fast.

Reporter: Your team unity was much better with this starting lineup. Does that contribute to the performance?

                          Tovarich: Apparently (rolls eyes)

Tovarich: Great to overcome the 'home' team in a tournament semifinal. They were relentless with the press at first, but it wasn't going well for them. They were wise to stop. Great night by Shehan, only 2 misses were his so-called basket interferences on his own shots, which I just can't even describe the non-sense. Suotamo was awful. Li was worse. The 3-point shooting was not great all around. So-so rebounding. Shame not to get Stanford here rather than Pepperdine. Now Southern Illinois in the final, not really the array of teams I was hoping to get, as usual.

Reporter: Will Shehan start permanently now?

Tovarich: Nothing's permanent. In a week, Shehan might forget how to make a layup and it'll be Suotamo's turn again if he can remember how to make one.

Reporter: Jack also started for Pawlak?

Tovarich: That may go back and forth as well. We'll see. Such is life when most of the positions on the team are dead even.

Reporter: We didn't notice your win over Northern Illinois was your 200th of your career. Congratulations Coach!

                            Tovarich: Thanks.

Tovarich: Pretty ho-hum performance. Outrebounded, allowed 60% shooting. All around just...meh.

Reporter: Does winning a trophy make it less ho-hum?

Tovarich: Not when you beat Northern Illinois, Pepperdine and Southern Illinois, the last unimpressively. This team is above that. With 7 seniors, next year's quite a rebuild. Maybe next year doing something like that would matter.

Reporter: Was it important to get Li going?

Tovarich: If he's off, we'll usually find someone else, unless we're the road team in a tournament semifinal, then no one's going to score apparently.

Reporter: Now the meat of the schedule with 5 of 6 power schools coming up. How do you think you stack up against them?

Tovarich: On paper, we're better than most of them, but we were Nebraska too, so that doesn't mean much. We have to learn how to get a damn rebound, or we may go about 1-5. Someone will probably score. We could do without allowing 60% shooting, or we'll have to force 16 turnovers every game and those big schools aren't going to do that like a freshman @ Southern Illinois.

Tovarich: Good win, but we needed most of those 19 turnovers we forced to stop their insane shooting. Luckily they cooled off a little from their 72% in the first half. We didn't even press the second half and they still were pretty sloppy with the ball. Luckily we shot pretty well too. We did a good job getting to the line. Couldn't rebound of course, as usual.

Reporter: Is the ultra-aggressive defensive plan constantly going for steals a long-term solution to beating these top teams?

Tovarich: Of course not. Sometimes it works, often times it doesn't. It's fairly inconsistent, but if they're going to shoot that well anyway, give them some easy layups because I just assume they'd have made a shot anyway and the way they shot 3's, maybe it was better to just give them 2.

Reporter: Are you happy with the current starting 5?

Tovarich: I think this is the best group going forward. Suotamo's been too inconsistent shooting from 1 foot away. Shehan we know is a better scorer, but Suotamo's supposed to be better at rebounding, and the numbers aren't really bearing that out. Neither are doing a good job at that, really, but I've accepted that no one I recruit is ever going to be good at rebounding.
