Going back to '23 - Lack of trades and AAV issues ruined '24 for me

Central discussion thread for lack of trades and low AAV that some are experiencing, inclduding myself.

In the first offseason Juan Soto coming off a year hitting over .300 with 38 homeruns and 110+ RBI's was seeking an AAV of $33.5M. He signed a 5 year $112M contract. That's an AAV of $22.4M for the best free agent on the market, who is young, improving and had a great 2024 season. This was the first contract he was offered when free agency began and nobody hiked up the price! In fact others cut his value CHEAPER! When I checked to see his interest, it was barely red, meaning I can't believe it wasn't rejected. And for reference, Soto signed in mid February, so there was plenty of time for someone to offer him more.

There were some others that seemed rather low for their metrics.

There is also the lack of trades issue. I saw 3 CPU trades during the season with none coming in July and then saw 4 in the offseason all within the first few weeks and then nothing.

Hopefully both of these issues can be fixed.

I am heading back to my franchise in '23 due to the lack of trades I'm experiencing in franchise mode (not a widespread issue apparently) which was hard enough to tolerate, but now after finishing the first offseason, the AAV for players is too low in some cases (will not declare all because I didn't evaluate all contracts)

In the first offseason Juan Soto (OVR 92 - great 2024 season) and Pete Alonso (OVR 90 - good/borderline great 2024 season) were VASTLY UNDERPAID on the open market. There were/are others, but these two are by far the most egregious.

Pete Alonso coming off a year hitting .278 with 36 homeruns and 105 RBIs I think, was seeking a AAV of just north of $20M. His contract? 6 years $68M, an AAV of $10M for a 30 year old first baseman who is coming off an all star appearance and good season.

There are other, a significant amount of others but those two point to the issue and are the rule, not the exception. Willy Adames signed a 5 year deal worth about $7M AAV. I signed Walker Buehler to a deal that was around $8M AAV. Hell I signed Edmundo Sosa who was looking for $5M per year to an AAV of $1.8M in December!

Used to be if players weren't signed and were available in late February you could sign them to whatever you wanted and they would accept, which was odd, becuase if you went to ST and they were free agents the following year, they wouldn't cut their value that drastically, but those instances were few and far between with players past their prime. Wanted it fixed but not a huge deal.

Players cutting their value this drastically prior to the end of the offseason is absurd! And with that happening teams are heading into the following season with huge payroll flexibility. Multiple teams over $100M free money to spend. The only one in the red was the Dodgers, but they start there, I believe, in 2024.

This may not be everyone's experience, just like not everyone is experiencing the lack of trades issue that I am, but these two issues have just killed any enjoyment of the game, and erased any desire to play on.

I hope both of these issues can be fixed in a patch, or at least a cause is found that will allow the user a way to remedy the issues, but for me, I'm not waiting around. I feel as though I've wasted 2 months of playing that I could've dedicated to the '23 franchise I had going and was invested in.

There are a lot of things to like about '24, especially in franchise, but two key components in the roster building having issues, just kills it for me.

I’ve been seeing trades, but I agree in the AAV front. It’s exactly why I added a contract demand tool for my spreadsheet for those who do 30 team control.

It’s crazy. I’ve seen Soto sign for 16m a year.

In my Royals franchise, 26 YO Cole Ragans (82 OVR B POT) is asking for 3m a year when I set it to 10 years.

Seeing a young, promising pitcher wanting to sign for just $3,000,000 a year is just brutal. And that’s when I extend his contract thru FA. If I ask him to sign for less than 5 years, he only wants 1.2m a year lol.

I had the same thing happen to me on 23’ as well. Just assumed it was MLB The Show being weird again.

This franchise needs competition plain and simple. 24 is the most disappointing effort of the series IMO and stuff like this proves there is no longer that passion and detail that was once the staple of this games development

They can't even get the cpu to no use the same LRP over and over again for the past 6 years of the game. I have no hope roster management logic is going to be good ever.

Lol in my current Franchise I just started, Sixto Sanchez has played in 14 of 15 games and has like 40 IP in those 14.

The AAV issues are the same as they were in 23, so if you already have an established franchise in 23, it makes sense to move over.

2024 is the first time I skipped the new game. I bought a ps5 specifically for this game - that's how much I love this game but lack of y2y saves was a gamebreaker and it used to be in the game.

My theory is expansion to multiple platforms has spread developer time thin and although they try hard it's simply not possible to get everything done. Good news is with 8 games left in the 2024 season playing more than 300 games in my franchise I'm enjoying the game.

I predict CB will be back to his 24 franchise within a couple of weeks.

Right now, I'd rank 24 as the best of the series. I'm thoroughly enjoying the gameplay. There are legacy CPU roster management issues (helloooo bullpen AI) for sure. But, for now anyway, I'm able to look past those.

You know. Without Y2Y saves and playing all 162, keeping the same franchise for at least two years does make a lot of sense.

I originally started to stick with my 23 team that I was enjoying but didn’t. Now, I kinda wish I did.

Right now, I'd rank 24 as the best of the series. I'm thoroughly enjoying the gameplay. There are legacy CPU roster management issues (helloooo bullpen AI) for sure. But, for now anyway, I'm able to look past those.

I predict he never goes back to 24 once he remembers how much better the hitting engine is on 23.

I think I’m joining you. Made it to my first off-season, people like Bregman and Alonso are signing for 7 mill a year and even with the trade sliders up to 10 the CPU makes zero trades. So f-ing irritating.

Gameplay is great, sure. But like I've said in other posts, the gameplay being great eventually gets to where it isn't enough. There's A LOT of things wrong with this years game that have completely ruined the immersion for a lot of people. Honestly if it weren't for the AI offense being completely non existent, and the insane number of strikeouts, I would have went back to 23 a month and a half ago.
