Re: Burning Redshirts
I never have this problem. In my experience, if you have enough depth at every position to fill out your depth chart, a player redshirting will never be subbed in. Key is to make sure each individual position has unique backups (so, not the same guy backing up both left guard and right guard, no backup HB also listed as the backup FB, distinct backups for all linebacker spots, etc). So when the CPU puts in backups or fills out your special teams, each backup spot is accounted for and the CPU doesn't have to pull beyond the depth chart.
I don't even bother using actual redshirts anymore, even with teams I sim 100% of games. I just make sure they're not on the depth chart and the depth chart is set up to ensure every spot is accounted for. -

Go in to depth chart and manually change it after the mass subs.

Re: Burning Redshirts
They aren’t in the depth chart. I’ve stopped doing mass sub manually because I know it puts them in. The cpu will mass sub on their own and it puts them on the depth chart even though they have been tagged as redshirt players.
As far as taking them out after the cpu mass subs, sometimes you don’t notice they made the change until it’s too late. They will have already played a special teams down.
Just wish they would be removed from any spot on the depth chart if they are tagged.Comment

Hit the mass sub button. Then adjust your depth chart.

Re: Burning Redshirts
I have not had this issue. The game will auto sub redshirted players into the game depth chart when you mass sub backups, but that won't in itself burn the player's redshirt. Unlike previous versions of this game, you will not burn a shirt by simply placing a redshirted player into the depth chart during the game. This no longer happens because:
- The player, such as HB #4, does not necessarily play in the game. He will if you have injuries / fatigue and he is next up. To prevent that, put your starter in that spot manually after you mass sub.
- A player must appear in 5 regular season games to burn his redshirt. Conference Championship Games and Playoffs / Bowl game DO NOT COUNT (note: I have not confirmed EA has implemented the post-season exemption correctly because that was finalized about the time the game was released this year). This means your redshirted player has to appear in more than one-third of your regular season games to burn the redshirt.
The second rule is important to know. I opened my current dynasty season near the hometown of a QB I was redshirting. I built a 21 point lead and then put him in to make his college debut to start the 4th quarter. He has now played 1 game and his redshirt status remains intact. I have three more games in the next 11 where I can play him and still have him redshirt this season.
Go to the Redshirts screen (Team | Redshirts) and you can see the number of games played by everyone on your team. (My enhancement request to EA would be to be able to SORT on the Redshirt column to display your redshirts consecutively to make it easier to monitor their status.) Redshirted players have a red background on their row, so they are fairly easy to see when you scroll. You can sort the GP column to see if any redshirts are about to burn their shirt. Make a mental note you have to remove them from the depth chart after mass subs. I suspect you have to manually manage this at times because the Mass Sub feature was added with a game patch rather than its initial release, so they don't likely have this 100% solid.
I'd also make a snarky comment that if you are mass subbing 5+ times in a season and burning redshirts because of that, perhaps it is time to play at a more difficult level (freshman -> Varsity, Varsity -> All American, All American -> Heisman).Comment

It’s definitely an issue when massing subbing and the game puts RSing players into your depth chart. The issue is that these guys will play on special teams (which uses guys deeper on your depth chart rather than starters) and you can’t prevent that outside of removing the RSing guys from your depth chart entirely.
Also, yes they’re at the bottom of your depth chart, and thus normally unlikely to play offense or defense if you have strict auto subs settings like I do (so that you can get deep in your depth chart during every game), then you could even play these RS guys on offense or defense.
The only way to prevent either of these (special teams, or deep depth chart offense or defense) is you redo the depth chart to remove the RSing players from it. What I do is hit mass subs again to go back to starters (it won’t change it again in my experience) and then manually sub in my backups for the remainder of the game.Favorite Teams:

I have never had the game burn a shirt on me I guess I'm not good enough to sub in backups five or more times a season. But it doesn't really surprise me because this functionality wasn't in the initial release, so there was a reason it wasn't released (or rushed an implementation because they underestimated the importance for most users). One bug that I have seen is when your starting RB (or DE) is your backup 3rd down back or backup power back (or backup Rush DE), Mass Sub Backups often puts them in the game at their other roles. So if your starting RB is your backup 3rd down back, he becomes your "starting" 3rd down back.
IIRC you are an XBox player. I don't have the bug I highlighted on the PS5. But it has bugs on the PS5. This last happened on Monday, before the last update, so I don't know if it currently exists. I had a big lead with my defense on the field and we entered the 4th quarter with a 3rd and 7. I noticed my backup Defense is in. I get the stop and received the punt. My starting offense takes the field. I then Mass Sub Starters, return to game, then Mass Sub Backups. I now have my backups in for both units. So the bug you describe is how I overcome the bug I have. Weird.Comment

I wasn’t describing a bug. I was simply describing how I “fix” it when the game mass subs for me automatically.
When I see my backups (because the game mass subbed for me) I then mass sub starters so that it goes back to my starters (and thusly removes any RSing players from y depth chart I don’t want in the game.
Then I manually change my depth chart to make my 2nd or 3rd stringers my “starters” so that my backups finish the game.
I’ve noticed that if I mass sub back to my starters I haven’t seen the game auto mass sub my backups again, which would undo all of my depth chart changes.Favorite Teams:

Re: Burning Redshirts
I've had this issue as well. I get around it by doing mass subs, then going manually through my whole depth chart and making sure none of the freshmen that are redshirting are in. That has helped, and it is only necessary a few times a year.
However, I had an auto-sub last night that was seemingly unavoidable. I have a 4 WR set that seems to feature two slot wide receivers. I had thrown a long pass to one of them and I then the game subbed in my true freshmen that I was redshirting. I didn't realize it until I threw a pass to him. He is not on my depth chart. The only thing I could figure was that my 3rd string slot receiver in my depth chart is also one of my starting outside receivers, so the game automatically went down the chart and pulled him. I don't think he was the next highest rated, so I don't understand, but that is what I think happened.
The bottom line is that if you manually redshirt a player, the CPU should not sub them in. This seems to be a bug that needs to be fixed. I get it, you get 4 games with those guys. But I want to control that, not the CPU.Comment

Re: Burning Redshirts
I believe that's true for 4 WR sets, but I am not positive on 5WR sets. I feel like it is 2 slot WRs and 1 additional WR next in line on your depth chart.Comment
