Re: B-Dawg's Northwestern Wildcats: Navigating the new Big Ten in CFB25

Leading 13-10 at halftime, Michigan took a 20-10 lead on a 39-yard pass from Ryan Boe to Jaylen Love with 6:08 left in the third quarter. A 45-yard Frank Carruthers field goal cut the deficit to 20-13 entering the fourth quarter.
Old habits do die hard lol

I would have been sweating bullets. Even with 29 seconds, the AI always finds a way to give you a slight heart attack.

Long looks dangerous. For me, I would go the complete opposite of what I would normally do with him and those weapons. I'd bring lots of pressure. Sitting in a zone might just be death by a thousand papercuts and limiting your total offensive possessions for the game at the same time.

Looking forward to see how it plays out!

      DOWN GOES MICHIGAN!!!!

Passung game came through in the clutch and kicker did his job, nice team win.

Adding on to what Leafs said, going against a talented QB with plenty of weapons I've had more success playing back and limiting the deep shots, then brining pressure once I have the lead and they're pressing. But if your corners aren't good in coverage its a moot point.

You contained some pretty potent offenses already this year, time to bring the freshman down to earth

YIKES!!! I am mortified I made that mistake! You may or may not know, I'm a sports writer in real life, so typos and factual errors drive me crazy. So do typos and misspellings in texts or social media posts.

And you seem to have foreshadowed exactly what Mr. Long did to our zone defense. You are a football genius, sir! I'm about to post the game that details that very thing and how I had to adjust.

Leaf was on to something. We definitely couldn't stop that kid with our base defense. My kicker has had a lot of late-game winning field goals, but only from chip-shot range. It's not him, it's me. I can't get the hang of kicking longer field goals (40 yards plus) in this game.

          MANNING UP
Northwestern stops LSU with man defense,
earns national title berth against Oregon

DALLAS — Sometimes, you have to be smart enough to know when a favorite scheme isn’t working and it’s time to go outside your comfort zone.

B-Dawg has had defensive success in four years at Northwestern by employing a 4-3 Tampa-2 defense. Even while his offense has struggled at times, that defense has kept games close enough for the Wildcats to have opportunities for victories.

But LSU was shredding B-Dawg’s pet defense, scoring touchdowns on its first three drives of the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4, 2028.

Trailing 21-7 early in the second quarter and seemingly having no answers for redshirt freshman quarterback Deandre Long, B-Dawg finally discovered one.

B-Dawg switched to a nickel 3-3 odd cover-2 man defense and the Tigers’ offense didn’t score again as top-seeded Northwestern earned a berth in the national championship game with a 45-28 victory.

The Wildcats will play Oregon for the natty in a rematch of the Big Ten Conference championship game in Houston. Northwestern came from 20-0 down to beat Oregon on Dec. 11.

B-Dawg has been averse to using man coverage throughout his career, worried that the CPU will kill him with crossing routes and win deep balls in one-on-one coverage. But he had no choice but to switch up things when Long kept finding holes in the Wildcats’ zone coverage, throwing touchdown passes of 22 yards to running back Caden Durham, 16 yards to Kylan Billiot and 7 yards to Jermaine Bazley to build a 21-7 lead with 9:17 left in the second quarter.

“What we were doing wasn’t working,” B-Dawg said. “Often, the CPU will have a good drive to start a game and I’ll make tweaks in our coverage, but always with some sort of zone concept. The only way I felt like we had a chance to slow them up was to make sure we had a defender near every receiver. It was a bit of a desperation move, because we don’t use man very often and I had no idea what to expect, but our guys played it brilliantly.”

Before the switch, Long was 10-for-13 for 147 yards and three touchdowns. After the switch, he was 12-for-28 for 123 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

The first stop the Wildcats made was when cornerback Jameel Croft stopped running back Caden Durham short of a first down on third-and-one on LSU’s fourth possession.

The man concept best suited cornerback Soni Motuapuaka, who had two interceptions Oct. 30 against Rutgers when Northwestern went to nickel man cover-2 late in the game while holding a comfortable lead.

Motuapuaka, who has strong man coverage attributes, picked off a pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown with 55 seconds left in the first half to cap a furious run in which the Wildcats quickly took a 28-21 lead.

Ryan Boe had directed back-to-back touchdown drives, throwing a 9-yard scoring pass to Hayden Eligon with 4:10 left in the first half and running it in from two yards out with 1:06 left.

“I was thrilled just to be tied at halftime,” B-Dawg said. “Once Soni picked off that pass, you had the feeling the tide had turned permanently. We just needed to come out strong in the second half to keep the momentum train rolling.”

Receiver Jaylen Love extended the lead to 35-21 with a 13-yard run on a jet sweep that was a last-second call as the play clock was running down.

As the game headed to the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were looking to be in great shape, but an old bugaboo reared its ugly head to jeopardize their shot at a natty.

Throwing what is normally a safe drag route, Boe’s pass intended for Carson Grove was picked off by Dashawn McBryde and returned 49 yards for a touchdown with 10:08 left in the game.

Suddenly, there were some nervous folks on the Northwestern sideline.

It didn’t help that both teams had players going down with injuries, causing constant clock stoppages when the clock should have been the Wildcats’ friend.

But no worries. Boe engineered a masterful 18-play, 86-yard march to victory, taking 5:08 off the clock before he scored on a 1-yard run with 4:57 left in the game. One play earlier, Boe had a 6-yard gain on fourth-and-one from the 7.

“It might be a different game if we didn’t make that first down,” B-Dawg said. “But Ryan is cash money on QB Blast out of the five-wide formation. You would think this late in the season that teams would have scouted it well and been ready for it, but I guess they’re still worried we would throw to an open receiver in that situation.”

Northwestern tacked on a field goal with 3:19 left after Croft broke up a fourth-and-six pass from LSU’s 23.

The Wildcats nearly tacked on a touchdown on the final play, as running back Jakori McFarland broke free on fourth-and-one when they didn’t even need to snap the ball. B-Dawg had McFarland slow up a touch and he was tackled short of the goal line.

"I didn’t need to rub it in,” B-Dawg said. “I have no beef with LSU. We win with class around here, unless a team has done us dirty before.”

Despite LSU’s early passing success, Northwestern held receiver Elliott Biggs to two catches for 15 yards, both in the second half. Biggs had 11 catches for 244 yards and three touchdowns in LSU’s first two playoff games.

Oregon beat Utah, 24-3, in the other semifinal.

          NORTHWESTERN BLOCKING
Brandon Henderson 9 pancakes, 0 sacks; Idyrs Cotton 6-0; Shawn Boyett 6-0; Hunter Schilens 5-0; Trayvon Riggins 4-0; Jaelen Camarda 4-0; Kyle Baity 3-0; Simon Silva 2-0; Jakori McFarland 1-0.

              2027 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

Oregon quarterback Austin Novosad has thrown for 4,386 yards and 40 touchdowns.

              Northwestern to face darling of
EA sim engine for national title

HOUSTON — So, we meet again.

For the second time in its last four games, Northwestern will take on Oregon — this time for the natty.

The Wildcats beat the Ducks in the Big Ten Conference championship game last month, rallying from 20-0 down to win, 28-23.

Which brings up the possibility that at some point B-Dawg may coach against a team three times in the same season.

              But we digress.

These teams have met three times in this dynasty and, although Oregon seems to be the darling of EA Sports’ sim engine, the Wildcats have a 2-1 record against Oregon.

“We aren’t afraid of them,” Northwestern coach B-Dawg said. “The first time I played them, I was really nervous it could get ugly, but we shut them down and won 13-9. We played a good first half in our loss against them, then we maintained our composure when we fell behind 20-0 the last time. They’re just another team in our way.”

Oregon has an experience advantage at this time of the year. The Ducks have qualified for the College Football Playoff all four years of this dynasty, winning the title with a 55-40 victory over Florida State in 2024 before losing to Penn State in the second round and Kansas State in the first round the last two years.

The Ducks have a 51-10 record in this dynasty.

“The sim engine loves them, but it’s a different game when a team has to face my teams,” B-Dawg said. “EA can’t bail you out once we kick it off, unless it activates some B.S. robo-QB or comeback code.”

The Ducks qualified for the playoff, despite losing its last two games before the postseason began. They lost 27-10 to Iowa before losing to Northwestern. Oregon generated a case for the playoffs with big wins against Michigan (48-0), Penn State (31-17) and Ohio State (42-25).

Northwestern is 14-1 and has a chance to become the first 15-win team in B-Dawg’s coaching career. The one loss came by a point to Wisconsin on a 70-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 left in the game.

As a side note, the long playoff run has put Northwestern middle linebacker Matthew Smith in a position to break B-Dawg’s single-season tackles record. Smith has 135 total tackles (51 solos, 84 assists), six short of the 141 racked up by Brendan McIntosh in 13 games in the 2025 season of this dynasty.

Oregon (13-3) is led by quarterback Austin Novosad, a 91 OVR senior who has thrown for 4,386 yards, 40 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Jay Miles has 65 catches for 1,005 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Jeremiah McClellan has 53 catches for 796 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Defensive end Elijah Rushing has 14.5 sacks and outside linebacker Brayden Platt has 12 sacks, creating a potential problem for Northwestern quarterback Ryan Boe.

We'll take one point. Yeah, the folks in Evanston are giddy. They expected to get to this point eventually, but not in Year 4.

                      PUT IT ON A SHIRT!
                      Wildcats win national championship
on touchdown catch by unlikely hero

HOUSTON — Kerry Hanoian will never have to buy a drink in Evanston, Ill. again.

He is forever a hero for Wildcat Nation (is that even a thing?) after catching the game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass with 6:41 remaining to give Northwestern a 24-20 victory over Oregon in the 2027 national championship game.

Hanoian isn’t the most likely hero for the Wildcats, but maybe that’s why Oregon left him so open on a slant call that B-Dawg hot-routed to before the snap. When the Ducks vacated the middle of the field, all that remained was for Ryan Boe to deliver the winning touchdown on a day in which it appeared he would be serving up a gift victory over Oregon.

Boe reverted to his old ways, throwing three interceptions, including a 77-yard pick-six to Ify Obidegwu with 6:42 left in the third quarter on a bubble screen intended for running back Nazir Kush. Northwestern was driving, hoping to add to a 17-10 halftime lead, when Obidegwu provided a wake-up call for the Wildcats.

“Things were looking pretty good and I was feeling we had things under control, even though we were up by only a touchdown,” B-Dawg said. “After that interception, I began to wonder if we were about to blow our only chance at a national championship. There are no guarantees you’ll ever get back to this point again, though I like my chances playing a video game.”

Oregon took its first lead on a 31-yard field goal with 2:00 left in the third quarter by Grant Meadors. The Ducks (13-4) had to settle for a field goal because cornerback Jameel Croft blew up a run by a third-and-three keeper by quarterback Austin Novosad for a 3-yard loss.

Earlier, Meadors kicked a 62-yarder from the logo that hit the crossbar and made it over with two seconds remaining in the first half. That was the longest field goal by or against B-Dawg in his coaching career.

It was time for B-Dawg to engineer his second game-winning drive in the fourth quarter in three playoff games.

Northwestern marched 84 yards in 14 plays, taking 6:16 off the clock, to get the winning touchdown. But first, Boe had to convert a fourth-and-two at the Oregon 25 with a QB Blast from the five-wide formation. Oregon was ready for it, keeping a linebacker behind the front four, but Boe was able to move the chains.

What proved to be the championship-winning 13-yard catch by Hanoian came on a twist to what has become B-Dawg’s money play in this dynasty. Calling Wildcat Flood out of a five-wide set, B-Dawg hot-routed Hanoian to a slant from his slot position.

“I saw an opportunity,” B-Dawg said. “If the linebacker blitzed or covered someone else, I figured that play would be wide open, which it was.”

Hanoian is a 67 OVR redshirt freshman from Elba, Ala. who gets on the field only in five-wide formations, which B-Dawg uses frequently.

It was only the second touchdown catch of the season for Hanoian, who had 26 catches for 317 yards this season.

“They expected us to target Jaylen Love or Carson Grove in that situation, which made them forget all about Kerry,” B-Dawg said.

Armed with the lead, there was still plenty of time for the Wildcats to blow it.

They wouldn’t, because the offense was able to convert twice on third down with pass plays to drain the clock. On third-and-six coming out of the two-minute warning (I refuse to call it two-minute timeout), Boe connected with Love for a 10-yard gain with 1:55 remaining.

On third-and-13 and with Oregon out of timeouts, Northwestern faced a dilemma. Do the Wildcats pass for the first down to end the game (risking a clock-stopping incompletion — or worse)? Or do they play it safe by running the ball and keep the clock running before punting it back to the Ducks with enough time left to make some magic happen?

B-Dawg didn’t come here to be timid. He rolled the dice, dialed up a screen pass to Grove out of the Monster formation. Groves caught the screen pass and gained 17 yards with 1:44 remaining, clinching the championship.

Boe kneeled it out from there and the celebration began for B-Dawg’s first 15-win team.

“I didn’t trust our defense enough to punt it back to them, so I knew we had to go for the knockout blow on third-and-13,” B-Dawg said. “On that Monster formation, we had the option to just run the ball, but they committed too many guys to the box and not enough to the outside.”

Maybe B-Dawg should have trusted his defense. The Ducks were held to 213 yards of total offense, getting touchdowns on a pick-six and on a short field following another interception.

The stars of the defense were defensive end Braxton Strong, who had two sacks and five tackles for losses, and middle linebacker Matthew Smith, whose team-leading 10 tackles enabled him to break B-Dawg’s single-season record. Smith finished with 145 tackles, breaking the mark of 141 set by Brendan McIntosh two years ago. Smith played 16 games, while McIntosh played 13.

Setting school records were Love with 101 catches this season and 261 in his career and Boe with 3,913 passing yards this season.

“The record books don’t stand a chance if you’re playing 15, 16, maybe 17 games under the current system,” B-Dawg said. “These guys were great, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the guys who did their thing in 12-game seasons back in the day.”

Congrats on the win.. I assume based off that fact Northwestern is in your title, your in it for the long haul with the Cats... Looking forward to those future battles with the Ducks. I feel they are are a pretty easy team to have like a instant rivalry with..

Yep! It has occurred to me in past dynasties (and this one) that putting a school in the title commits me to that school. I know a lot of guys like doing the coach-based dynasties. The only time I ever did a multi-team dynasty was in NCAA 2004 when I took the 117th-ranked team (the worst as the time), played them until I won a natty, then took the next No. 117 team, rinsed and repeated. I took Buffalo and Baylor to national championships and started out at UL-Monroe before the dynasty fizzled out or NCAA 2005 dropped, I can't remember which.

Hey, we both brought championships to unlikely contenders in the same year

Grats on the win. With how the recruiting trail has shaped up, this isn't going to be the last chances for the 'Cats

Older versions, 2004, 2005, 2006, I always ran with Eastern Michigan not sure why being a Westcoast guy but I also enjoyed building them up and challenging Michigan and Michigan State for bragging rights to the state.
