PGA 2K25 Can't Squander Hot Start With VC Greed

PGA Tour 2K25 is a great game, arguably among the best golf games of all-time, and right now 2K and HB Studios are squandering all those good vibes with unnecessary greed.

As you maybe noticed forums were down earlier today, so just getting this up on the forums now even though was on front page all day.

Appreciate you calling out 2K on this...the game is wonderful, and plays better than really any golf game I've ever played. And yet, this whole VC situation has really soured my feelings on the game.

These practices need to have light shed on them, as you all did here. 2K waited until positive reviews for the game came out, and early access folks offered pretty solid word of mouth...only for them to nuke the in-game economy just as standard edition players were about to get their hands on it, and (whether intentional or not) push new players to have to buy VC if they want enough of it to improve their MyPlayer in any reasonable amount of time.

I also appreciate you updating the OS position on this game.

Echoing MrArlingtonBeach above, I was really enjoying this game during the first week but the VC change basically soured my opinion on it entirely. I don't recommend buying it in its current state.

^^^^ (sorry can’t quote right now)

I think it’s important for you to state how you play this game when giving that recommendation because it DOES matter. You stated you play only online basically with this game.

I’m still loving it in-spite of the crawl to VC. Best golf game I’ve ever played on the course. Love the difficulty of the swing. Will get through the best nine holes I’ve had only to lose my swing on the back nine.

Haven’t shot an under par round yet.

If you aren’t worried about your player competing with others in online modes - I highly recommend it.

Even as someone who plays online and offline, I'd still happily recommend the game, but I'm also not ultra-competitive (and am used to this sort of nonsense from 2K). Either way, I think it's important to still note stuff like this because it's an especially bad look to do it this way.

And I don't subscribe to the idea that this was 100 percent planned/sinister (I do absolutely think they probably just goofed the testing portion while speeding to launch and didn't playtest enough), but it's also easy to point to many examples of both 2K/EA fixing "exploits" immediately that folks abuse and yet are generally much slower fixing things that hurt folks with these potentially exploitive microtransactions. They can fix this if they want, and could fix it by now since these companies have gotten very good at pushing server-side "hot fixes" at this point.

I find the VC bait & switch inexcusable

The only way I can justify giving them money on this one is to wait and jump onboard when there is a sale at some point perhaps

I really liked the demo and was strongly considering buying the game. Unfortunately, this is a big reason why I rarely buy NBA 2K, and only then when it goes on deep discount. I don't mind if the game offers shortcuts, but my problem is when the game is aggressively designed to require those shortcuts. Same problem if the game is outrageously "priced" when it comes to aesthetic options. I thought EA's golf game had that problem, especially when coming from Rory (and past games) where all the styles were unlocked through in-game actions.

Give people a reasonable alternative to paying. Key word in bold.

2K25 has gotten review bombed over at Steam, too. Was something like 89% or 90% "Positive" pre-standard release, and it now sits at 65% "Mixed" just four days after launch...

The depressing aspect of this, to me, is that it ain't getting "fixed" or changed.

The history of NBA2K tells us "this is how it is" and it will probably only get worse over time (or just stay like this in the best case)

                      This is what 2k "does"

Maybe the only thing 2k got wrong is that they gave out out to much easy vc in the early release.

This all makes it so much more painful that EA has, apparently, bailed

Imagine if we had multiple releases here to actually drive a better experience to compete for customers

Someone also did a look at VC, Evo Tools, and Level Up tokens and their availability in the Clubhouse Pass. It's a bit jarring (but not unexpected) that so many more of all those things are available in the paid tier.

And since those things are all more valuable and rare now with the VC changes, this will likely push more people to feel the need to pay extra $$$ for the Premium Pass:

                            150 VC
                            Premium (level where you earn it in the pass): 2, 10, 17, 25, 31, 37, 43, 49, 58, 64, 71, 79, 85, 90, 97
                            Standard (level): 13, 46, 67, 88

                            LVL^ TOKENS
                            Premium: 9, 15, 22, 30, 36, 42, 47, 56, 62, 70, 77, 83, 89, 94
                            Standard: 7, 37, 66, 82

They got that way wrong, for sure...but how did they not know this well before Early Access even started? I could tell VC earnings were way too generous within my first couple hours of playing it.

They had 2+ years to come up with a progression strategy that didn't need to be nuked within one week of Early Access, yet here we are.
