2025 Yankees Year 1 News Wire
Yankees Hopeful For A Return To The World Series
Coming off a sour finish to their 2024 season in losing to the DOdgers in the Fall Classic the NY Yankees made a bold move. First Brian Cashman was fired as President and GM of baseball operations and 55 Year Old Michael Sword was hired to take over the reigns of the front office as the Yankees new President and GM of baseball operations. Sword comes in with a wealth of experience in the Yankees minor league system as a former player, coach, scout and manager. He is well respected throughout the organization and Hal Steinbrenner felt it was time for a new direction.
Juan Soto decided to set sail to Flushing from the Bronx. Rumors were rampant that he demanded a family suite at Yankees Stadium and Sword refused. Also sharing the spotlight with Yankees captain Aaron Judge was also thought to weigh his decision to leave. So off to work Sword went and the Yankees began the reboot. We had a chance to talk with Michael Sword and ask him some questions on the projected lineup, some free agents they singed and prospects for the future.
Thank you for taking some time today Michael.....so losing Juan Soto after such a dynamic season, hitting in front of Aaron, going to the World Series for the first time since 2009, how has the team taken this defection in free agency? Have you had a chance to talk with Aaron Boone and some of your leaders in the clubhouse? - The team is great, we are very positive and enthusiastic about the upcoming season. Losing a talent like Juan of course is never easy, but we have more than enough talent here to pick up the slack. Bringing in Belli and the continued development of Austin (Wells), Tony (Volpe) and having a veteran like Goldy is going to be great. We are gonna be ok. Aaron (Boone) is very positive about leading the team again as well as Judge.....he is our captain and set's the tone for everything. You may want to ask him what he thinks of our prospects this season (laughs).
Let's talk about the additions you made in the winter meetings and right before the season here - - First and foremost adding Cody Bellinger is exciting. Here we have a fantastic athlete who not only can hit balls all over the place but his defensive is going to help us tremendously in CF. We are really happy to have Belli and we expect a great year. Paul Goldschmidt is a por's pro. This guy flat out carries himself with the utmost class and confidence and will be a great influence on the younger guys in how you gotta prepare day in day out to not only survive the grind, but win baseball games and play consistently. This also allows us to keep Ben down on the farm to develop more and get a lot more AB's. We are excited about Ben (Rice). Volpe is going to take the next step this season we believe. He has so much talent, great energy and another kid who was born to be a Yankee. DJ has had a crazy good off-season and feels the best he has had in 2 years. We can see him having a big comeback season at 2nd base for us. And of course Jazz is Jazz. He is such a tremendous talent and being around both Aarons and Goldy...he is seeing what winning is all about and being locked in day in day out. As far as our pitching....Max is a true gem. We feel we signed the best starting pitcher in free agency and really look forward to seeing him team up with Gerrit this season. Luis Gil can only improve coming off that great season he had and we feel great about Carlos and Clarke and then we have Stro to spot start and hold down our long relief spot. In the pen we added a couple of great veeran arms in Joe Kelly and Brooks Raley, but our trade to bring in Devin is gonna be the game changer. He is a legit front line closer and we want him a Yankee for a long time.
One more question....how do you feel about Jasson Dominguez at this point and can you see moving him for another piece? - Well I had a chance to sit down with Jasson and talked about long term goals. What kind of player does he want to be, where does he see his career trajectory and what is he going to do to make that a reality. I liked what I heard, but as an organization we have high expectations for him this season as we made a big commitment to him early on and now it's time to see the dividends. So time will tell how this evolves.
Yankees (7-7) off to a .500 start thru 14 games as Boone figures out his lineup
Manager Aaron Boone has a couple of things to figure out
The Yankees have had an up and down start to the 2025 season but there is a lot of positives to take away. Aaron Judge is off to an MVP start hitting .268 with 6 HR 12 R 9 RBI, Devin Williams looks dominant as the new Yankees closer, Austin Wells looks like a different hitter thus far hitting .302 early on and smoking balls everywhere. However slow starts are also causing some growing pains to the campaign as Jasson Dominguez looks over matched. Also Cody Bellinger is still adjusting to being in pinstripes but his last 6-7 games the barrells have been plentiful but simply finding leather. Volpe has also started to come on here of late and Boone is not worried about him. DJ Lemahieu is looking healthy and hitting the ball hard with a .289 average and playing gold glove caliber defense at 2B.
The Bombers are in the midst of closing out a 3 game interleague series vs the Giants and have the rubber match later tonight (live on twitch) as they look to take 2/3 before the struggling Royals come to New York for a 3 game set. Then it's off on the road as the Yankees go to Tampa (4 game set) and Cleveland (3 game series). Then it's back home for Toronto and then on the road at Baltimore to finish off April and that is when we will have our next franchise report with stats and standings!
Yankees Take The Rubber Match Over The Giants/Cole Shuts Down The Struggling Royals/Yankees Make A Big Trade
Oswaldo Cabrera walked off a thrilling Yankees series clinching win in the bottom of the 10th Sunday over the Giants. The final score was 4-3 and allowed the Yankees to climb one game above .500 for the first time this season (8-7). Giancarlo Stanton was the top Yankee hitter in this thriller going 3/4 with 2 RBI. Austin Wells also chipped in an RBI single as well as "DJ" Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The Yankees then welcomed the struggling K.C. Royals who limped into Yankee Stadium with a 4-12 record. Ace Gerrit Cole would take the bump and deliver a signature outing going 9 complete innings and shutting out the hapless Royals.
9IP 5H 0ER 0BB 9K
He was dealing from the word go. Bobby Witt Jr had a day off but will return for the next 2 games.
In the meantime the Yankees bats were fire. 1 thru 9 all got on the stat sheet with 6 Yankees having multi hit games! Cody would hit a 2R belli bombs to get things started, Goldy would add a 3R HR as well, and Judge would rip a signature laser solo shot to RC.
Jazz - 2-5 R RBI
Bellinger - 1-5 R HR 2 RBI
Judge - 4-5 2R HR RBI
Stanton - 2-4 R
Goldy - 1-4 R HR 3RBI
Volpe - 2-4
McCann - 1-4
Cabrea - 2-4
Peraza - 2-4 R
The Yankees have been waiting for a breakout offensive performance and it finally came together.
After the game President and GM Michael Sword announced a pretty interesting trade that the team consummated with the soon to be Las Vegas Athletics (or soon to be Aces if the rumors of a total rebrand are true coming in the 2026 season when their new state of the art park on the Las Vegas Strip is completed).
"Today we traded OF Jasson Dominguez to the Athletics for 1B/C Tyler Soderstrom, 3B Tommy "Tanks" White and 3B/UTI Gio Urshela"
"We want to wish Jasson the very best on his continued career and he is a very talented player. However we felt he would be better served with a change of scenery and we are very excited to get two young players in return and a proven veteran utility player that adds a lot of depth to our bench".
"Gio has a history here in NY and is excited to back. Tyler will go right to AAA in the International League on our Storm Chasers affiliate. He will get plenty of opportunities in the near future. While I know it is hard to be sent down initially we feel our coaches can work with Tyler to hone his craft even more and set him up for success very soon. We expect Tyler to be a big part of our future. As for Tommy we gave him a promotion to our AA affiliate The Naturals in the Texas League. Tommy showed what he was all about at LSU. He was born to be a Yankee and we look forward to watching him develop and eventually be a part of our rich history".
The Yankees continue their series with the Royals and then head out on the road vs the Rays and Guardians. We will be back with another Yankees Year 1 report after the Cleveland series concludes to be followed by a full April report after our April 30th game vs Baltimore which will have standings, stats and injuries and trades around the league.

Yankees Look to Snap 4 Game Swoon as They Welcome The Padres
The Yankees are in the midst of their longest losing streak in this young 2025 campaign. The Pesky Rays came in and swept the Bombers in New York after the Yankees were able to take 3 of 4 in Tampa. This sudden reversal of fortune has the Yankees looking up at the Red Sox, Orioles and Rays again in the standings sitting at 17-17.
Manager Aaron Boone is confident they will turn it around vs the Friars and then when they head to the Athletics on the road.
"Losing Belli stung but he is on the mend and should be back for either the last game of this series vs the Padres or the start of our west coast swing vs the A's". Bellinger strained his hamstring near the end of the 1st game vs the Rays. He was placed on the 10 Day IL.
