Brandon Webb took the mound for the D'backs in the rubber match of the series, and Arizona expected their ace to dominate on the warm afternoon. However, after Webb plunked two batters in the fourth inning, the defending Cy Young winner was ejected from the game. Edgar Gonzalez pitched the remaining 5.1 innings for the D'backs and did exceptionally well. The young right-hander didn't allow a single run against the Reds, and Jeff DeVanon's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth gave Arizona another W.
