NASCAR Driver Tries Video Game Trick in Race (Shacknews)

Shacknews has the scoop.

Quote:
"NASCAR driver Carl Edwards was in second place going into the final lap of Sunday's NASCAR Camping World RV 400. Desperate to edge ahead, he employed his video game knowledge and slammed his car into the concrete outer wall of the track, expecting a bump in speed. It didn't work."

Lol who would've thought that hitting a wall would slow you down instead of giving you a boost

He is probably cursing EA. "If it's in the game, its in the game" NOT!

Re: NASCAR Driver Tries Video Game Trick in Race (Shacknews)

Actually what he tried is a very common move in racing called a slide job where you bascially go into the corner low and much faster than you normally would, knowing you will slide up in front of your opponent. He knew the slide would have him hit the wall but if he had hit it just a little less he would not have been slowed down so much and the move might have worked. At that point, he had nothing to lose. He never said he expected a boost in speed nor did he choose to purposely slam into the wall.

The video game comment was a joke he added after he said he knew he would hit the wall. There are tracks where touching the wall coming out of corners is very common. You don't want to do it too much so as to not damage your car but touching the wall does not necessarily mean slowing down a ton.

Yeah, he almost kept enough speed going, but it didn't quite work. I was watching and thought it was such an awesome attempt to win though. He had to push it (and even risked wrecking). He just as easily could have settled for 2nd, because without a risky move he had no opening on JJ.

I think he overdid it somewhat voluntarily on his entry because he wanted to be absolutely sure to clear Johnson on his slide up the track and he had enough of a lead on third that he knew that unless he flat out wtrecked he would finish 2nd anyways. The last thing he needed was to wreck them both.
