Gamers Who Refuse to Play Madden Embrace Older Games

Are you a gamer that refuses to play Madden and embrace older games? Check out the article from Patrick Hruby, of The Washington Times.

I know we have quite a few of these guys here at OS. What's your story?

Quote:
For the legion of control-pad jockeys who have made “Madden NFL” both an annual best-seller and a pop-culture phenomenon, Tuesday’s arrival of the franchise’s newest iteration had the makings of an unofficial national holiday: late-Monday-night purchasing lines outside electronics stores, a surge in online excitement and competitive trash talk, and a rash of dubious sick-day call-ins to work.

Now in its 23rd year, the “Madden” football video game has become nearly as much of a national obsession as the sport it simulates, with cumulative sales exceeding 70 million copies, a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a branded ESPN television series and numerous NFL players among the title’s devoted followers. Nevertheless, within the gaming community, there are hundreds - maybe thousands - of dissidents, united by a rejection of all things “Madden NFL.”

As much as I love 2K5 and hate Madden, i'm gonna give in and give it a try this weekend. 2K5 is just to old for me, IMO...

Re: Gamers who refuse to play Madden embrace older games

I got my first Madden game in High School back in 1992 (Sega Genesis).

But now, I refuse to play it because of failed promises, blatant lies, perpetual mediocrity, and institutionalized underachievement. I have been lied to since 2007 and in 2010 I said enough is enough.

Right now I play Backbreaker and APF 2K8, because I have to. Both games have their glaring faults as well, but at least they are doing well with what they have been given. I grade their efforts with a curve.

If Madden implements a new physics engine, I might think about buying again.

Interesting article, but I feel like I wasted 20 minutes of my free time being interviewed for nothing. I recognize most of the names in that article and some of them aren't really even active in the online community anymore (not just OS). Sour grapes. I guess I won't be telling my friends and family to look it up.

Just wanted to point this out, lest people thought I was poking fun of the 2K5ers - I believe (strongly) that NFL 2K5 was, and is, the pinnacle of football gaming. It's just long in the tooth now and shows it's age.

Obviously, the relationship between feature writer and editor is a complicated one, and I suspect that Mr. Hruby had a wider perspective in mind here that may have been altered somewhat. It's normal for a lot of any published article (especially in print, like the Washington Times) to lose at lot to the cutting floor - it's just the nature of the beast.

Nevertheless, it's definitely an interesting read, and one that carries a lot of weight on the date of Madden 12's launch.
